Jason Allen,a video game designer in Pueblo,Colorado, spent about 80 hours working on his entry to the Colorado State Fair’s digital arts competition.Judges awarded him first place, which came with a $300 prize.
Allen’s victory took a turn when he revealed online that he’d created his prize-winning art using Midjourney,an artificial intelligence (AI) program that can turn text descriptions into images. He says he also made that clear to state fair officials when he dropped off his submission(提交) called Théátre D’péra Spatial.
Colorado’s 150-year-old state fair is held each summer in Pueblo,a town about 185 kilometers south of Denver. The fair’s submission guide lines do not directly mention AI-generated art,but they define(定义) digital arts as “artistic practice that uses digital technology as part of the creative or presentation process.”
The competition’s two judges say they were unaware that Allen had used AI to create his piece. But even if they had known, they still would have given him first place. They said they awarded the top prize based on the story Théátre D’péra Spatial tells,as well as the spirit it inspires.
Allen created Théátre D’péra Spatial by entering various words and phrased into Midjourney, which then produced more than 900 versions for him to choose from.He selected his three favorite, then continued adjusting them in Photo shop until he was satisfied. He boosted their resolution(分辨率) using a tool called Gigapixel and printed the works. He entered all three pieces into the competition, and one of them won.
Allen said he believes the criticism of his work originate from artists’ fear that technology will one day become so advanced that they’ll be out of jobs.
In the meantime,as state fair spokesperson alga Robak says,it’s bringing out “a broader conversation about how we decide what art is,and how we judge it appropriately.”

The end of any life is a time to look back and reflect on the historic events it has witnessed and rarely can that be so more than in the case of Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ,whose life witnessed several significant changes of the world stage.
The 96-year-old,whose death in Scotland was announced by Buckingham Palace shortly after 6 p.m.on Thursday Sep 8th,2022,was born before the birth of talking pictures, and lived to see the era of virtual reality. She arrived in a world where her grandfather King George Ⅴ was the Emperor of India, and left it with Britain still finding its feet on the world stage. Her life also saw the conquer of space and the fight with the pandemic.

We would all like to increase our cognitive(认知的) ability beyond the limits set by Mother Nature. So it’s no wonder that brain-training programs—which typically focus on training our working memory—are a multibillion-dollar industry. But can this kind of training really improve your intelligence
Cognitive training sees the brain as a kind of muscle that can be made stronger with the right kind of practice. It consists of tasks or games carried out on computers or smartphones.Despite much research, there has so far been no agreement about its effectiveness. Some think that cognitive training increases a broad range of cognitive abilities, while others less optimistic.
Yet we do know that some cognitive skills, such as working memory and intelligence, tend to go together and are predictors of real-life skills such as work performance. Thus, training one cognitive skill might lead to an improvement in many other cognitive and non-cognitive skills. That is exactly the underlying hypothesis(假设) on which working-memory training is based.
To test this hypothesis,we examined all the studies about working-memory training we could find with normally developing children:26 experiments and 1,601 total participants.Children represent an ideal test group:during childhood, skills are still at the beginning of their development. Thus, cognitive training is more likely to succeed with children than adults.
The results were very clear.Working-memory training did not show any effect on children’s fluid intelligence—a person’s ability to solve new problems and adapt to new situations. It didn’t influence their academic achievement or other cognitive abilities, either. The only reliable effect was that children got better at what they trained to do.Nonetheless, the fact that participants got better at working-memory tasks does not necessarily mean that their working-memory ability increased. They may just have learnt how to perform that particular type of task.
The results do indicate that the use of working-memory training programs as an educational tool is fruitless. However, the results mustn’t discourage us from training our cognitive and non-cognitive skills. We just have to be aware of the actual limitations of such practice in areas outside what we are actually training. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it—the most efficient way to develop a skill is,after all,to train that skill.
32.What is the benefit of cognitive training according to the passage
A.It brings much profit to the training companies.
B.It makes one’s brain stronger through practice.
C.It uncovers the secrets of how human brains work.
D.It earns a good reputation for the training company.
33.How did the author find out the effects of working memory training
A.By conducting several scientific experiments.
B.By comparing test groups of different ages.
C.By reviewing the available previous researches.
D.By interviewing normally developing children.
34.Which of the following shows the effects of the experiments on children
A.They tend to gain greater academic achievements.
B.They are able to adapt to new situations more quickly.
C.They can perform better in the field they are trained in.
D.They are likely to succeed in dealing with real life problems.
35.What may be the best title for the passage
A.Will Cognitive Training Enjoy Lasting Popularity
B.Can Working-memory Training Make You Smarter
C.Why Is Working-memory Training of Little Use
D.Would You Develop a Skill Through Cognitive Training

The first flower went to a policeman. As soon as she saw the policeman,my niece ran up to him and handed him a flower. His smile was so big,but hers was even bigger!
In no time,we neared the end of our flowers. It was lunch time and we went to Subway for lunch. There the kids gave a flower to the waitress, who was really excited to receive the flower. As we were eating our lunch, the waitress came up to the kids with two big chocolate cookies! I live in the center of the city.It rarely rains there,so cars parked in the open parking lot can easily become dusty.
One sunny day,I decided to surprise the owners with a car wash.At first, people would come by and ask me,“Who told you to wash the cars ” or “Who paid you to wash their cars ” I had to explain that I just wanted to do something kind.My reply was often met with an even more confused look.
But as the afternoon went on,some other people that came by understood my goal of the activity. They started helping out with some of the chores. When the day was over,we were all satisfied with the work we have done.
Then I realized that there is special energy created when you choose to think bigger and serve others.Though I didn’t make any money that day,I have found the greatest gift I’ll ever get.

第一节
Good morning, everyone!Today I would like to show respect for Dr.Yuan Longping.
The first thing that strikes me most is that he put the country’s needs before his personal interest. When he saw farmers working all the year round still suffered from starvation,he decided to devote himself to agriculture. The second thing is that he never gave up his belief regardless of what difficulty he came across. He continued to make intensive efforts and eventually achieved substantial progress in developing high-yielding rice, which helped the world solve food shortage.
All in all,I admire Dr.Yuan so much that I determine to be a person like him.Thank you!
第二节
With just one flower left,I said it should be given to the person who needed it most.Just then,my nephew caught sight of an old woman in a wheelchair nearby.“I think she’s the very person for the flower. She lives a hard life because of bad health. She needs smiles most,” said my nephew. With these words,my nephew, followed by my niece, took the flower up to her.You can imagine how happy the old woman looked! She smiled, and gave each of the kids a big kiss.
It turned out to be a great day for us.We spread a lot of smiles by giving out flowers, and received a lot of smiles in return. The flowers not only made us feel good about ourselves, but also made 40 other people feel happy.I feel there is nothing more enjoyable than being friendly to people.Meanwhile, the kids learned an important lesson in the process. In fact, they can’t wait until next time they have such a chance again. They want to give out more flowers!
