When people think of working animals, what often comes to mind are dogs that watch sheep, horses that work on farms and animals that perform in movies. But there are lots of other jobs animals have had over the years.
Dogs have greater sense of smell than humans. This made dogs the traditional hunting partners, making their owners able to follow foxes and other animals.Police departments have taken advantage of this skill to help find missing people and escaped criminals.Recently, dogs have been trained to find drugs and explosives (爆炸物).
The honey guide lives in the southeast African nation of Mozambique. It has developed a win-win relationship with a group called the Yao.If a Yao member makes a certain sound, the honey guide will fly from tree to tree directing him to a hidden bee box.Once the box is discovered, the person breaks open the box for honey, and the honey guide could enjoy the honey, too.
Ferrets (雪貂) are cute and furry animals that are from 1.5 to 4 pounds.People have taken advantage of a ferret’s natural ability to run through tiny space.Ferrets wear a special harness(甲胄) that makes them able to pull a string through hundreds of feet of tiny space, which is then used to pull computer wires through tiny space.
Baby flies are called maggots. The job of a maggot is to eat and grow until it turns into a fly. This is similar to how a caterpillar eats and grows until it becomes a butterfly. However, there is a big difference between these insects.Caterpillars feed on plants, while maggots eat meat.Actually, they only enjoy bad meat.Maggots are used with patients who get serious infections that can’t be treated with antibiotics (抗生素).The maggots are used to the infected area for a number of days. They eat the dead part but leave the living part alone, thereby helping patients recover from the infection.

Whether in the home or the workplace, social robots are going to become a lot more common in the next few years.Social robots are about to bring technology to the everyday world in a more humanized way, said Cynthia Breazeal, chief scientist at the robot company Jibo.
While household robots today do the normal housework, social robots will be much more like companions than mere tools. For example, these robots will be able to distinguish when someone is happy or sad. This allows them to respond more appropriately to the user.
The Jibo robot, arranged to ship later this year,is designed to be a personalized assistant. You can talk to the robot, ask it questions, and make requests for it to perform different tasks. The robot doesn’t just deliver general answers to questions;it responds based on what it learns about each individual in the household. It can do things such as reminding an elderly family member to take medicine or taking family photos.
Social robots are not just finding their way into the home. They have potential applications in everything from education to health care and are already finding their way into some of these spaces.
Fellow Robots is one company bringing social robots to the market. The company’s “Oshbot” robot is built to assist customers in a store, which can help the customers find items and help guide them to the product’s location in the store. It can also speak different languages and make recommendations for different items based on what the customer is shopping for.
The more interaction the robot has with humans, the more it learns. But Oshbot, like other social robots,is not intended to replace workers, but to work alongside other employees.“We have technologies to train social robots to do things not for us,but with us,” said Breazeal.
25.How are social robots different from household robots
A.They can control their emotions.
B.They are more like humans.
C.They do the normal housework.

B.Marketing strategies for social robots.
C.Information on household robots.
D.An introduction to social robots.

Record fires sweeping across the Amazon have been catching global headlines as scientists and environmental groups are worried that they will worsen climate change and threaten biodiversity(生物多样性).
As the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon is often called “the lungs of the world”.It is also home to about 3 million species of plants and animals, and 1 million local people. The vast lands of rainforest play an important role in the world’s ecosystem because they take in heat instead of it being reflected back into the atmosphere. They also store carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) and produce oxygen, making sure that less carbon is given off, mitigating the effects of climate change.
“Any forest destroyed is a threat to biodiversity and the people who use that biodiversity,” Thomas Lovejoy,an ecologist at George Mason University told National Geographic.“The shocking threat is that a lot of carbon goes into the atmosphere,” he stressed.“Facing the global climate change,we cannot afford more damage to a major source of oxygen and biodiversity. The Amazon must be protected,” UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said.
Data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) show that the number of forest fires in Brazil quickly increased by 82 percent from January to August this year from a year ago.A total of 71,497 forest fires were recorded in the country in the first eight months of 2019,up from 39,194 in the same period in 2018,INPE said.“It’s reported that the forest areas in the Brazilian Amazon have decreased something between 20 and 30 percent compared to the last 12 months,” Carlos Nobre,a researcher at the University of Sao Paulo, told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.
Brazil owns about 60 percent of the Amazon rainforest, whose drop could have severe results for global climate and rainfall. The size of the area ruined by fires has yet to be determined, but the emergency has transcended(超出)Brazil’s borders, reaching Peruvian,Paraguayan and Bolivian areas.

30.Which section of a magazine is this text probably taken from
A.Sports and music.

A company in San Francisco,California, has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women’s shoes.
Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles.More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burned with other waste products.
A San Francisco start-up company called Rothy’s,however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes.Roth Martin is the company’s co-founder.He explains how they turn plastics into soft materials for women’s feet. They take the plastic, clean it,and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers. Those fibers are then combined together. This is done by a 3D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe are then attached to the shoe’s outer part, called the sole (鞋底).This outer sole is also made from environmentally friendly material: responsibly sourced no-carbon rubber.
Rothy’s shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and designs. They cost either $125 or $145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them last year, the demand for the shoes grew.Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that demand.“We’re not going to run out of water bottles any time soon.So we have a limitless supply of material, and I think that is a good sign for our future.” When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled materials to make other products.
For now,the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shipping in the near future.
32.How are used plastic bottles usually dealt with

I like reading,so my favourite place in our city is the city library.I’d like to share with you a little about our city library. When the city library was first built in 1970,it had only two floors, but as the population in the city grew, more and more people visited the library,so two more floors were added to it 10 years later.Today the library has a collection of over 140,000 books and 100 kinds of newspapers and magazines, though not all of those can be taken out.I like visiting the third floor because that’s where all the science books and older books are located.Sometimes I also visit the second floor to read the latest magazines and newspapers.I go to the first floor almost every weekend to get novels and textbooks to take home to read. The library is open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday to Friday, but on the weekend,it closes one hour earlier.

第二节
When Mrs.Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too.Very soon, the children were busy popping the corn, while their mother went out to buy the paper bags. When she came back, she brought Bernard with her.Bernard was very glad to join in the work and said,“So good an idea! I’ll try right now.” They worked together until all the corn they prepared was all popped, the paper bags filled and arranged in the basket.
With everything ready,Bernard started out on his new business.Much sooner than expected,he returned with an empty basket. He had never earned so much money before in his life. For many weeks, the Meredith family continued to offer popcorn to Bernard.People began to watch for the “little popcorn boy”,and every week he had at least fifty cents,a significant income for him and his family,to take home. All of this was thanks to the good idea that John came up with.
