Florence's most popular site is Duomo(cathedral). Construction of the Duomo began in 1296. Inside the Duomo, there are dozens of paintings and sculptures of great historical and cultural significance, so give yourself some time to take it all in. The main attraction of this massive structure is Brunelleschi's Dome, a masterpiece of architecture. You'll definitely want to buy a ticket to climb the 463 steps to its top.

Sometimes when it feels like things are falling apart, they may actually be falling into place. This is exactly the case for Holly Smith, 34, from Surrey, when she lost her job two years ago.
At the beginning of 2020, Holly was working as a general manager for a small independent bakery business in Surrey. She had been there six years and couldn’t believe it when they told her she had to pack up her bags and leave. Being made redundant came as a huge shock for her and she panicked about struggling to pay the bills and finding another job during such a difficult time.
Holly didn’t know where to turn initially, but she was determined to find a silver lining, so she picked up a paintbrush and began to paint. Holly painted a portrait of her parent’s dog, a Spinone Italiano named Bailey, and shared the image online. Straight after, a few friends requested their own pet paintings and soon her career took off.
Holly named her business Holly & Murphy, after her special five-year-old cocker spaniel, Murphy. She is often at her most creative when she’s floating on water, together with her furry companion in her boat. She combines watercolour paints and pencils to bring dogs’ faces to life. A small painting usually takes two to three days to complete. Customers love how she captures their pet’s personality in great detail. Some of the most memorable paintings she has been asked to do are of dogs that have passed away. Her dog portraits start at 295 and can cost up to 595.
“When it first happened, it felt like the end of the world,” Holly, a current full-time painter and business owner, told The Mirror, “but it was the best thing that ever happened to me. And I’m so grateful to have a job that I love.”
24. What does the underlined word “redundant” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Responsible. B. Retired. C. Unimportant. D. Unemployed.
25. Who contributed to the initial development of Holly’s business
A. The netizens. B. Holly’s parents.
C. Holly’s friends. D. Customers losing their pets.
26. What do customers think of Holly’s paintings
A. They speak highly of her paintings.
B. They don’t like her pet paintings.
C. They think her paintings need to be improved.
D. They think her paintings should include more details.
27. What does the story convey to the readers
A. Interest is the best teacher.
B Every cloud has a silver lining.
C. He who laughs last laughs best.
D. Failure is the mother of success.

Playing outside can do good to children in many ways. As little as 10 or 15 minutes can support physical and mental (精神的) development.
Generally speaking, children should aim to do 60 minutes of exercise per day. This could be running, climbing, skipping, jumping or kicking a ball at the park. Exercise helps children to stay fit and keep a healthy weight. It strengthens muscles and develops their balance. Exercise is also good for mental health. It gives off endorphins in their brains, which can make them feel happier.
Studies have shown that playing outside can develop children’s motor skills: Gross motor skills are our ability to make large movements with our arms or legs. There are lots of ways to develop gross motor skills outside. For example, running around, walking on the roads which are not smooth or climbing hills. Fine motor skills are our ability to make smaller movements often with our hands. Children can develop these skills by picking up small objects.
While playing outside, children can also build their vocabulary by naming the objects or animals they see around them. Ask your child to describe the view or find shapes in the clouds. Some children may find they’re happier to talk outside. With fewer people around watching or overhearing them, they can be more adventurous with their language.
Moving through new and different places can improve children’s spatial awareness Playing outside often means children have to use their imagination and communication skills. They are likely to have fewer toys outdoors and so have to create their own games. This can increase how much children talk to each other.
So you should think about chances in your daily life for children to spend time outdoors. Explore your local area. Or set up some activities or a family sports day.
28. What does the second paragraph mainly focus on
A. Time needed to do sports. B. Proper places for exercise.
C. Sports suitable for children. D. Advantages of doing exercise.
29. Which of the following is fine motor skill
A. Taking weightlifting exercise. B. Picking up stones on the beach.
C. Walking on the roads with care. D. Playing tennis on the playground.
30. Why do some children feel happy to talk outside
A. Because they have less stress from study. B. Because they like to take more adventures.
C. Because they feel less watched or overheard. D. Because they love animals living in the wild.
31. Who is the text mainly written for
A. Parents. B. Children. C. Teachers. D. Researchers.

A new trend called “praise groups” or “in-need-of-praise” chat groups has become popular on Chinese social media. In Chinese culture, where modesty (谦逊) is valued, openly seeking and giving praise is uncommon. These chat groups provide a platform for people to receive compliments (赞扬) and encouragement, which are often lacking in their daily lives.
To join a praise group, users can pay a fee on e-commerce sites, starting at 50 yuan for five minutes of compliments. The group members will then show the person with praises and kind words. The compliments can be designed for a friend or loved one as well. Participants have found that being praised by strangers can help lift their spirits and improve their self-confidence.
For example, Meng Zha, a student at Shanghai’s Tongji University, tried the service and found it amusing and uplifting. She received compliments on her appearance and even quotes (引用) from popular songs. Ms Meng couldn’t help but laugh at the compliments and expressed her desire to post such high-quality praises in the future.
Praise groups have appeared as a way for people in China to seek and receive compliments and encouragement that may be lacking in their daily lives. It provides a positive and uplifting experience for participants, improving a sense of happiness and self-worth.
Those who support the groups, see them as an antidote to extremely bad moods (情绪) which are often associated with things happening on the Internet. “At first, the purpose of this group is to make us learn to praise others and accept others’ praises confidently. Here we can drop everything, and use our heart to praise and support others,” one member said. But the life journey is long and there are some unexpected situations that we can only count on ourselves to face when there is no one out there to offer help.
32. What is the purpose of praise groups
A. To make praise popular. B. To have everyone supported.
C. To share common interests. D. To give people hope and happiness.
33. What can we learn about Meng Zha in paragraph 3
A. She was not strong enough. B. She was under working stress.
C. She was satisfied with the service. D. She was a gifted singer in her area.
34 What does the underlined word “antidote” mean in the last paragraph
A. A way of making new friends. B. A kind of medicine.
C. A method of being confident. D. The wisdom of solving problems.
35. What is the author's attitude to praise groups
A. Objective. B. Critical. C. Supportive. D. Unclear.

But when she saw the price, her heart sank a little. She gathered up her courage and asked her mother if she would buy it for her. Her mother said, “Well, it is a pretty necklace, but it costs an awful lot of money. I can buy you the necklace, but when we get home, we should make up a list of housework that you can do to pay for the necklace.” Jenny agreed immediately, feeling a burst of joy. So her mother bought the pearl necklace for her. Jenny worked on her housework determinedly and earnestly every day. Soon Jenny paid off the pearls.
Jenny had a very loving daddy. When Jenny went to bed, he would read Jenny her favorite story.
D. Unemployed.
25 Who contributed to the initial development of Holly’s business
A. The netizens. B. Holly’s parents.
C. Holly’s friends. D. Customers losing their pets.
26. What do customers think of Holly’s paintings
A. They speak highly of her paintings.
B. They don’t like her pet paintings.
C. They think her paintings need to be improved.
D. They think her paintings should include more details.
27. What does the story convey to the readers
A. Interest is the best teacher.
B. Every cloud has a silver lining.
C. He who laughs last laughs best.
D. Failure is the mother of success.
D 25. C 26. A 27. B

根据画线词的上文“She had been there six years and couldn’t believe it when they told her she had to pack up her bags and leave. (她在那里待了六年,当他们告诉她必须收拾行李离开时,她简直不敢相信)”和下文“came as a huge shock for her and she panicked about struggling to pay the bills and finding another job during such a difficult time (对她来说是一个巨大的打击,她对在如此困难的时期挣扎着支付账单和找另一份工作感到恐慌)”可知,此处在描述Holly失业时的情况,失业让她受到巨大打击,她的处境很艰难。

34. What does the underlined word “antidote” mean in the last paragraph
A. A way of making new friends. B. A kind of medicine.
C. A method of being confident. D. The wisdom of solving problems.

Dear Alex,
With the College Entrance Examination approaching, my anxiety about the English learning is increasing. So I am writing to seek some guidance on how to improve it.
English writing is really a big challenge for me. First of all, my vocabulary is not large, which makes it impossible for me to choose right and authentic words and phrases. Besides, English grammar becomes a bottleneck of my English writing, the sentences I construct being much more like Chinese sentences than English ones.
Should you be kind enough to give me any help, I would be grateful to you.
Yours,
Li Hua

One day when she and her mother were checking out at the grocery store, Jenny saw a plastic pearl necklace, by which she was totally defeated. How eagerly she wanted it!

Paragraph 1:
Several days later, when Jenny’s father came in to read her story, Jenny was waiting anxiously for him on the bed. When listening to the story, Jenny was totally absent-minded, with her hands holding the necklace tightly and firmly. When the story came to an end, unexpectedly, Jenny offered her beloved necklace to her father, with her fingers trembling automatically. No one knew what the necklace meant to her. She whispered to her father, softly and gently, “Daddy, you know I love you more than the necklace.” Then, the necklace slid into her father’s hands determinedly.
Paragraph 2:
Holding the plastic pearl his daughter offered, the father dragged out a blue box. Much to Jenny’s amazement, a beautiful real pearl necklace lay peacefully in the box, which set her heart racing. Holding the genuine necklace in her hand, Jenny lifted her lip, tears beginning to blur her vision.
When listening to the story, Jenny was totally absent-minded, with her hands holding the necklace tightly and firmly. Holding the plastic pearl his daughter offered, the father dragged out a blue box. Much to Jenny’s amazement, a beautiful real pearl necklace lay peacefully in the box, which set her heart racing.
