It was 1937. Amelia Earhart was already known around the world. She had set many high-flying records. She had become the first woman to fly by herself across the Atlantic Ocean. On May 20 of that year, Earhart set out on an even more risky flying event. She wanted to fly around the earth. However, her plane disappeared over the Pacific Ocean. 1. For a long time that remained a mystery. Now researchers are finding something new that could help solve this mystery.
Island of Mystery
For the past 20 years or so, the search for Earhart has centered on Nikumaroro—a small island in the South Pacific Ocean, with no one living there. 2. They thought the pieces belonged to Earhart. They developed the idea that Earhart and Noonan crash-landed near the island. They probably spent their final days on this lonely island.
One piece of information is a photo taken in October 1937 of a shipwreck near the island. Historians noticed something sticking out of the water in the photo. 3.
Use of High Technology
Experts（专家） searched the area where the photo was taken. They used the latest underwater robots to search for remains of Earhart and her plane.
4. Months later, experts noticed one of these pictures showed a mysterious object. It looked like an airplane wing. It’s the right size and shape to be part of Earhart’s plane.
