London Good place! Let’s play in London!
[John Snow]
(Frustrated) So many deaths… No one knew how to prevent or treat cholera…
No… I should never give up. I must destroy cholera, once and for all!
But how can I start Maybe I should make clear the stages of the research first…
Task 1: Prediction
Discuss the following stages of scientific research in pairs:
What order would you put them in
Task 1:
Prediction
Please help me put them in correct order.
Stages of Scientific Research

draw a conclusion
collect data
ask a question
find the supporting evidence
analyze the results
think of a method

[John Snow]
Now I’m more clear about how to defeat cholera.
But as a Chinese saying goes, “know the enemy and know yourself and you can fight a hundred battles with no danger of defeat.(知己知彼,百战不殆)”
Please help me know more about myself and my enemy, King Cholera.

Cholera:A disease that has claimed millions of lives since the 19th century. It has had 7 severe outbreaks in history.
[John Snow]
One of the most feared disease… What causes it Maybe I should get some inspiration from others’ opinions.
Enter Task 3
Task 3: Read & Choose
Read Para.2 and choose the correct theory.
Task 3:
Read & Choose
In general, doctors in those days had two contradictory theories to explain how cholera spread. One theory was that bad air caused the disease. The other was that cholera was caused by an infection from germs in food or water. Snow subscribed to the second theory. It was correct, but he is till needed proof. Consequently, when an outbreak of cholera hit London in 1854, Snow began to investigate. He discovered that in two particular streets the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He was determined to find out why.

The second theory
Which theory should I choose

A map A map… Yes! I can draw a map! Let me see…
Enter Task 4
(Snow began by marking on a map the exact places where all those who died had lived.)
It seems that I got some clues…
Task 4:
Read the map
Task 4: Read the map
Observe the map and analyze it with questions.
Task 4:
Read the map
Please help me analyze the map with questions.
1.What does “—” mean How about PH
2. Which house numbers had more than four deaths in Broad Street
3. Which house numbers had no deaths in Broad Street
4. Why some households (2o, 21, 8 and 9) had no deaths
6. What’s your deduction/assumption
The water pump was to blame.
5. What’s the similarity among the houses in Broad Street that had multiple death

You got a [marked map]!
Please help me find more evidence.
What is more, in another part of London, a woman and her daughter had died of cholera…
[John Snow]
The water pump is to blame! Now I am able to announce that the pump water carried cholera germs.
Enter Task 5
Here it is. Let my try to combine and complete the guidebook…

from the River Thames that was polluted by raw waste
much more likely to get cholera than those who drank pure or boiled water.
Through Snow’s tireless efforts, water companies began to sell clean water, and the threat of cholera around the world saw a substantial decrease. However, cholera is still a problem. Each year, millions of people around the world get cholera and many die from it. Fortunately, we now know how to prevent cholera, thanks to the work of John Snow. Moreover, in his use of maps and statistics, Snow transformed the way scientists study diseases. For this reason, Snow is considered the father of modern epidemiology.
