目标一:To read for the information about realizing one’s potential by skimming for topic sentences and summarize the outline of the speech Activity 1: Check the new words and phrases first. Read the words and phrases, and say the Chinese meaning loudly. potential, senior, path, challenge, thinking, positive, opportunity, acquire, effort, advance, amazing, confidence, resource, facility, equal, attitude, goal, balance, improve, well-rounded, individual, character, responsible, ahead, junior, forward, independent; lie in, rise to, make a difference, make the most of, take advantage of, last but not least, look forward to Activity 2: Pre-reading Look at the title and pictures and answer the questions. Realizing your potential ★ How do you think senior high school will be different from junior high school ★ What do you think the principal will talk about in his speech Possible answer: ★ At senior high school, lessons will be more demanding with more knowledge to learn, more examinations to take and more homework to do. This will require me to focus more on my studies and make a continuous effort. This is good, though, because perseverance and diligence are good qualities that I need to develop, and I would love to challenge myself. I think senior high school will be an important period of my life and will help shape my future. ★ When I read the title "Realizing your potential" and look at the pictures, I believe that the principal will talk about how to be a successful senior high student. He will welcome the new senior high students and encourage them to work hard to become better students. He might also talk about what they can expect to experience at senior high school. Para. 6: You alone are responsible for realizing your great potential. Tip: Finding topic sentences A topic sentence tells the reader the main idea of a paragraph. It is usually at the beginning of a paragraph, but it may also be in the middle or at the end of a paragraph.
Task 2 Read the speech transcript quickly again and answer the following questions. 1 What challenges will students face at senior high school 2 What does the principal have confidence in 3 What school resources are mentioned in the speech 4 What positive attitude should students develop Possible answer: 1.A new environment, new knowledge and new ways of thinking. 2.He has confidence in students' ability to make a difference to their family, to their community and to our country. 3.Classes,teachers and classmates, school facilities and activities. 4.Always look on the bright side and never lose hope, even in difficult situations. Activity 4: Careful reading Task 1 Look at the questions first and read the speech transcript carefully, then answer the questions. ★ What is the purpose of the speech ★ What is the main idea of the speech Possible answer: ★ To guide/To encourage/To inspire/To motivate ★ The speech focuses on “potential” and its definition, significance and ways to realize one’s potential. Task 2 Read the speech transcript carefully again and analyse the outline of the speech. 1)Complete the outline of the speech. Answer: opening; development; closing 2)Answer the questions: ★ What is potential ★ How to realize one’s potential Possible answer: ★ Potential is your natural ability that can be developed when you try hard enough ★ Subjective — good study habits;useful skills;a positive attitude Objective — resources;classes;teachers;classmates;school facilities;school activities;clubs;sports activities 3)What is the language style of the speech Possible answer: Telling stories/Giving examples/Being humorous/Using statistics Activity 5: Post-reading In pairs, discuss the following questions. 1 How does the principal try to keep his audience interested What rhetorical devices does he use Find examples from the speech. 2 How are you going to realize your potential Possible answer: To keep his audience interested, the principal asks the question "What is potential " and then answers it himself. He also uses rhetorical devices like repetition and parallelism. For example, "Today is the start of a new term, the start of a three-year journey and the start of a promising future." "Who knows what beautiful works of art you will create, what medical advances you will make or what amazing technologies you will develop!" The principal also uses a quotation from Lao-Tzu, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Understanding a speech A speech is a formal talk that a person gives to an audience. A good speech keeps the audience interested all the time. To achieve this, the speaker may tell interesting stories or ask questions. A good speech also uses quotations and such rhetorical devices as metaphor, repetition and parallelism.

I've just finished my first day of senior high school and I really enjoyed it. I've been told that schoolwork will present more of a(n)(1)________ in the years ahead, and that the teachers will hold us to higher standards. Task 2 What can parallel structures do for a speech Possible answer: Parallel sentences have a great impact on the speech. By repeating the same structure, the speaker sounds more convincing and persuasive, leaving the audience an impression that they are listening to the most important message.
