It was the summer of 2020, in the small town of Plano, Texas. Our family was new to town, and we knew no one. This was our third move since leaving eastern Ohio three years before. I wasn’t into sports and I was out of most social dealings of a small-town seventh grader, and thus had to prove myself over and over.
But things changed in my third period on the second day, I didn’t know Mom had signed me up for a choir (合唱团), but it was OK because I liked music. Our teacher, Richard J. Winters, was also new to town and to teaching He was in his 40s, just starting his choir directing career.
He was a former soldier, and l immediately recognized he loved both kids and music. On our first day, he told us what he wanted for us and from us. We each took tums in making music beside the piano, I was nervous to sing in front of the class, but I did it well. When all the students finished singing, he declared, “You are going to be a great choir!” Through many competitions, our choir proved not just good, but among the best in Texas.
Mr. Winters encouraged us to take part in many competitions and to be proud of our musical talents. He allowed us to be human and make mistakes. “If you are going to make a mistake, make it a good one,” he once said. With his encouragement, I found my home and my passion: music.
He was like a father to us in so many ways. With his encouragement, I gained the confidence to follow my careers, as a passionate singer and songwriter in the studio. When we had a gathering for Mr. Winters, “his” kids came from around the world to honor him. We told him what an impact he had had on each of us. Mr. Winters, you taught us how to be champions.

C A teacher makes a difference to students’ life. D. Strict masters produce outstanding students.

Sugar-free cookies, sugar-free candy, and diet soda—are these better for you After sugar became a no-no in the nutrition and wellness world, sugar-free food and drinks acted as a replacement for once beloved sweet drinks and snacks. Being claimed to be ZERO sugar means the food and drinks are healthier, better for diabetics, and help you slim down ... Right Wrong. Sugar-free products aren’t better for you. In fact, they are worse. For most sugar-free products, it means that artificial sweeteners (甜味剂) are used instead of real sugar. The problem is that these sweeteners do not come from natural sources and they can do you more harm than good.
Let’s get into what these artificial sweeteners actually are. Sugar-free sugar sounds wrong because there is no such thing as sugar-free sugar. Some of these sugar-free alternatives even contain sugar and the ones that have chemicals your body often does not know how to process. Most artificial sweeteners are a lot sweeter than sugar so only a small quantity of them are needed. That’s why they can market sugar-free alternatives as “low-calorie” or “no-calorie’. It also means that you get no nutritional value from consuming them, which is why so many sugar-free replacements are classified as “non-nutritive”. These artificial sweeteners tend to hide under some names. Actually, they are 200-600 times sweeter than sugar.
When you eat sweet stuff, your body continues to desire it and, even though your body cannot metabolize (代谢) these sugar-free alternatives, your brain does not know the difference. In turn sugar-free alternatives relate to weight gain and Type-2 diabetes. Besides, artificial sweeteners also damage your gut’s ability to break down sugar which impacts everything you eat. In other words, your body doesn’t know how to handle artificial sweeteners because they have nothing real to process.
Here is a good rule of thumb: stay away from artificial sweeteners and look for non-sugar, natural sweeteners like stevia( 甜 叶 菊 ) or date sugar. In the war against artificial sweeteners and real sugar, both lose. Satisfy your sweet tooth with natural sugar that comes from fruits and stay away from products claimed to be sugar-free.
28.What do most sugar-free products have in common
A.They don’t taste sweet. B.They are free of calories.
C.They are rich in nutrition. D.They have artificial sweeteners.
29.What can be inferred about artificial sweeteners
A.They are as sweet as sugar. B.They pose a big risk to health.
C.They can be metabolized easily D.They have long been added to food.
30.What does the author advise us to do
A.To keep a balanced diet. B.To stay away from sugary products.
C.To choose fewer artificial ingredients. D.To take in sugar from natural sources.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.Why are sugar-free products bad for your health B.How will sugar-free products affect your body
C.What can be called sugar-free products D.Why are sugar-free products popular
D
A new trend called “praise groups” or “in-need-of-praise” chat groups has become popular on Chinese social media. In Chinese culture, where modesty (谦逊) is valued, openly seeking and giving praise is uncommon. These chat groups provide a platform for people to receive compliments (赞扬) and encouragement, which are often lacking in their daily lives.
To join a praise group, users can pay a fee on e-commerce sites, starting at 50 yuan for five minutes of compliments. The group members will then show the person with praises and kind words. The compliments can be designed for a friend or loved one as well. Participants have found that being praised by strangers can help lift their spirits and improve their self-confidence.
For example, Meng Zha, a student at Shanghai’s Tongji University, tried the service and found it amusing and uplifting. She received compliments on her appearance and even quotes (引用) from popular songs. Ms Meng couldn’t help but laugh at the compliments and expressed her desire to post such high-quality praises in the future.
Praise groups have appeared as a way for people in China to seek and receive compliments and encouragement that may be lacking in their daily lives. It provides a positive and uplifting experience for participants, improving a sense of happiness and self-worth.
Those who support the groups, see them as an antidote to extremely bad moods (情绪) which are often associated with things happening on the Internet.“At first, the purpose of this group is to make us learn to praise others and accept others’ praises confidently. Here we can drop everything, and use our heart to praise and support others,” one member said. But the life journey is long and there are some unexpected situations that we can only count on ourselves to face when there is no one out there to offer help.
32.What is the purpose of praise groups
A.To make praise popular. B.To have everyone supported.
C.To share common interests. D.To give people hope and happiness.
33.What can we learn about Meng Zha in paragraph 3
A.She was not strong enough. B.She was under working stress.
C.She was satisfied with the service. D.She was a gifted singer in her area.
34.What does the underlined word “antidote” mean in the last paragraph
A.A kind of medicine. B.A way of making new friends.
C.A method of being confident. D.The wisdom of solving problems.
35.What is the author’s attitude to praise groups
A.Critical. B.Objective. C.Supportive. D.Indifferent.

Have you ever noticed that some people can eat what they want and stay in shape, 56 others carefully watch what they eat and still put on weight How 57 (annoy) ! However, scientists are beginning to believe that some people get the ability to stay thin from their parents.
Scientists say that when some people eat, their bodies will 58 (nature) store the excess energy from food as fat. These people gain weight if they eat more than they need each day. Meanwhile, other people eat more than they need but their bodies are able to “burn off” the extra food without making fat, 59 they rarely have weight problems.
60 (show) that this is true, scientists have experimented on laboratory 61 (mouse). They gave them a special diet with a lot of fat. Sometimes an act of kindness can mean a lot in life.
Three years ago I worked for a few weeks as a doctor in a new dental clinic (牙科诊所) at Victor Harbor, to the south of Adelaide and an hour further away than my usual workplace. My first day there was a rush driving to the new clinic and getting used to the clinical environment.
As it was all new to me, I took off my gold rings: my wedding ring, and one that was an anniversary (周年纪念日) gift from my husband. I put them in a tissue (纸巾) and placed them beside my computer. During my lunch break, I noticed the tissue and thought that it did not look very clean and threw it into the rubbish bin. I went about my work and my day went well; I met new patients and felt that I had been productive. At the very first day at the clinic, I did a good job, busy but fruitful. So I felt more than proud. When it was time to get off work, I changed my clothes and went out of the clinic, thinking nothing of the ring.
Driving home at the end of the day just moments before I reached my house, I noticed that my rings were missing. I felt the heat in my body rise, my face burning red. I felt sick to my stomach. I spent an hour or so making calls, trying to find my rings. The first people I called were my manager and clinical leader and they gave me a few phone numbers for cleaners. I got in touch with a lady who managed the cleaning services for the clinic, and she told me that the bins had already been collected. I knew nothing could be done now. I had lost my rings. It mattered much to me and now as if I lost a precious thing and my feelings were beyond words.
Paragraph 1:
But about two hours later, I received an amazing phone call.
Paragraph 2:
Three days later, I finally got a chance to thank the cleaner face to face.常州市联盟学校2023—2024学年度第一学期学情调研

In fact, exercise can contribute to your health and refresh your mind. Only when you have a strong body can you keep on studying. otherwise, your study will be interrupted from time to time by sickness.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
Paragraph 1:
But about two hours later,I received an amazing phone call. The cleaner had gone through the bins and found my rings! I was so thankful to her, someone who had taken the trouble to go through the bins—which is not a pleasant task—to find my priceless ring. I worked at that clinic the following day, so I bought chocolates to thank this wonderful person. On arriving the clinic, my manager gave the ring to me. Unfortunately, I did not get to meet the cleaner as she was at work elsewhere that day.
Paragraph 2:
Three days later, I finally got a chance to thank the cleaner face to face. After a tiring day, I was about to leave as usual when I met a cleaner by accident, who came to collect the bins at the clinic. With much curiosity, I quickly came up to her, and asked whether she was the cleaner who had found my rings. The cleaner, wearing dirty overalls, stood in front of me and said yes. Excited and relieved, I expressed my deep gratitude to her again and again. She just told me it was not a big deal. Finally, she left, wearing a bright smile on her face. And that smile would stay in my memory forever.
