How could we tell time if there were no watches or clocks anywhere in the world The sun was probably the world’s first “clock”, except in the far north, where the Eskimos (爱斯基摩人) live. There, it’s dark most of the winter, and light most of the summer. But in most of the world, people have used the sun for a clock. Even today, if you don’t have a clock, you still know that when the sun shines, it’s day, and when it’s dark, it’s night. The sun can also tell you if it’s morning, noon, or afternoon.
People who live near the sea can tell time from the tides. In the daytime, for about six hours, the water rises higher and higher on the beach. And then it goes down and down for about six hours. The same thing happens again at night. There are two high tides and two low tides every 24 hours.
Fishermen on a ship learn how to tell time by looking at the moon and the stars. The whole sky is their clock.
In some places in the world the wind comes up at about the same time every day or changes direction or stops blowing. In these places the wind can be the clock.
A sand clock is an even better clock. If you had fine dry sand in a glass shaped like the one in the picture, you would have what is called an hourglass. The sand in the hourglass goes from the top part to the bottom part in exactly one hour. When the hourglass is turned over, the sand will take another hour to go back again.

After a whole week’s busy work, I was finally able to sit in a restaurant close to my home on Friday night. Usually it should be the busiest hours for the restaurant but I didn’t see plenty of people at that time I seated myself at a small square table, ordered a cup of coffee and enjoyed the short time of rest.
While I was waiting for the waiter to serve, an old foreigner with long hair caught my attention. He moved toward the fridge slowly, opened the door and took out a bottle of orange juice. It might take me a second to do these but he spent a few minutes.
He sat back on his chair and prepared to uncover the bottle but that seemed quite difficult for him. Clearly, I knew that there must be something wrong with his hands or arms. Without thinking twice, I went up to him and offered help.
Just as he was trying to talk back, the cover had been taken off the bottle. What happened next really surprised me. All of a sudden, he got mad, stood up and left the restaurant without a word of thanks, leaving me there wondering why my help would end up like that.
Later in the day when I told this experience to my mother and asked her why the man did that, my mother asked me to think in his position. “Perhaps he is able to uncover the bottle without anyone’s help”, said my mother. “What you did made him seem unable to do his own things, you hurt his self-esteem.”
Sometimes we go out of our way to do something for others and we think it is helpful. However, we are supposed to think carefully if others really need our help before we decide to lend a hand.
29. After a week’s hard work, the writer went to the restaurant to ______.
A. see many people B. offer help C. to eat D. get relaxed
30. What does the underlined word “self-esteem” mean
A. 权利 B. 情感 C. 自信 D. 自尊
31. What is the best title for the passage
A. Think before help B. Believe in yourself
C. Always praise others D. Help yourself.

Young people are often unhappy when they are with their parents. They say that their parents don’t understand them. They often think their parents are too strict with them.
Parents often find it difficult to win their children’s trust, and they seem to forget how they themselves felt when they were young. For example, young people like to do things without much thinking. It’s one of their ways to show that they grow up and they can solve any difficult problems. But older people always think more than young people. Most of them plan things ahead and don’t like their plans to be changed, so when you want your parents to let you do something, you will succeed easily if you ask before you really start doing it.
Young people often make their parents angry by the clothes they wear, the music they enjoy and something else. But they don’t mean to cause any trouble. The just want to be cut off from the old people’s world and they are trying to make a new culture of their own. And if their parents don’t like their music or clothes or their ways of speech, the young people feel very sad. Sometimes instead of going out with their parents, they just want to stay at home alone and do what they like.
If you plan to do something, you’d better win your parents over and get them to understand you, if so, your parents will certainly let you do what you want to do.
