When I was a little boy growing up, I would always change out of my good clothes after church and run outside to play for a few hours. When I came back inside, the house would smell heavenly. It was my grandma making our Sunday dinner. It wouldn’t be proper to just call it a feast (盛宴). There would be freshly made Italian bread with butter. There would be noodles covered in red sauce (酱汁) slowly cooked for hours. Slow cooked with the sauce too would sometimes be meatballs, sometimes potatoes, sometimes chicken, sometimes beef or deer meat and most often a mix of them. I remember we would all gather around the old, metal dining table. Then we would eat with smiles, laughter and joy. I always felt so peaceful and safe there. We always left dinner feeling full up and very happy.
As I got older and became an adult myself, I tried to make something like Grandma’s Sunday dinners. I got the sauce recipe (配方) from Dad and often I would get very close to making a dinner like Grandma’s but it was never quite right. There finally came a point when I realized what I was doing wrong. I was trying to rediscover a taste, when what I really wanted to do was bring back a feeling. It wasn’t just the delicious food that made those dinners so wonderful, it was also the feeling of love that was there. Grandma always put her love into her cooking and always put her love into her life. Since then I have tried my best to do the same. No matter what I am cooking or what I am doing, I always try to season it with love.
Each day here can be a feast of love if we make it. Each day here can be a feast of joy when we share it.

Inspired by the effortless way humans manage objects by not using the sense of sight, a team led by engineers at the University of California San Diego has developed a new method that enables a robotic hand to rotate (旋转) objects only through touch.
Using their technique (技术), the researchers built a robotic hand that can easily rotate a wide variety of objects, from small toys, cans, to even fruits and vegetables, with no damage to them. The robotic hand completed these tasks using only information based on touch. The work could aid in the development of robots that can manipulate objects in the dark.
To build their system, the researchers put 16 touch sensors (传感器) on the four-fingered robotic hand. Each sensor costs about $12 and serves a simple role: check whether an object is touching it or not.
What makes this method unique is that it depends on many low-cost touch sensors that use simple, binary signals (二进制信号)—touch or no touch—to perform robotic in-hand rotation. These sensors are spread over a large area of the robotic hand. This is different from a variety of other methods that depend on a few high-cost touch sensors fixed to a small area of the robotic hand, primarily at the fingertips.
The researchers then tested their system on the real-life robotic hand with objects that the system has not yet touched. The robotic hand was able to rotate a variety of objects continuously and wouldn’t lose its hold. The objects included a tomato, a pepper, a can of butter and a toy duck, which was the most challenging object due to its shape.
The team are now working on applying their method to more difficult tasks. They are currently developing techniques to enable robotic hands to catch and throw, for example. “If we can give robots this skill, that will open the door to the kinds of tasks they can perform,” said one engineer.
28. What does the underlined word “manipulate” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Control. B. Remove. C. Recognize. D. Influence.
29. What can we know about the touch sensors of the robotic hand
A. They are quite expensive. B. They cover most of the hand’s area.
C. They perform difficult tasks. D. They are mainly at the hand’s fingertips.
30. Which of the following is the most difficult for the robotic hand to rotate
A. A pepper. B. A tomato. C. A toy duck. D. A can of butter.
31. What will researchers probably focus on next
A. Improving robotic hands’ skills. B. Designing more robotic hands’ shapes.
C. Developing robotic hands’ creativity. D. Rebuilding the robotic hands’ system.

The dog has long been called man’s best friend. It is a comment that is often based on the dog’s behavior: its loyalty (忠诚), love, and ability to please. Pet owners like Sharon Reid of Grand Rapids, Michigan, says she’s experienced such things first-hand. “After my husband passed away, my dog was the most dependable one in my life to help me through the difficult months that followed.”
Among the most widely understood and accepted health benefits (好处) of pet ownership are that pets provide better dealing methods for stress and encourage greater compassion (同情), and that their companionship can protect people from suffering from loneliness. These benefits are found in a recent survey from the American Psychiatric Association, which showed that 86 percent of owners feel their pets have a mostly positive influence on their mental (精神的) health, and that some 90 percent consider the animal to be a member of the family.
But understanding the degree to which pets do good to the mental health and well-being of their owners is a matter of some debate among researchers. While most of them agree that certain benefits are well recognized, others may not be as based on scientific evidence as some believe.
Among the recognized benefits is that pet-owner interaction can improve one’s. quality of life. Research shows that playing with a dog can improve one’s feelings, that reading to a pet can help children with learning development issues, that pets can lessen the levels of stress of their owners, and that having a pet can increase one’s bodily activity levels.
Pet ownership has also been shown to help a wide variety of people, including some dealing with specific mental health conditions. It’s also worth noting that some older adults may gain benefits from pet ownership. “The comfort from having pets is especially important for those who have fewer close relationships with friends and family, such as older adults,” says Rodriguez, a professor of human-animal interaction.
32. Why does the author mention Sharon Reid in paragraph 1
A. To make a comparison. B. To give an example.
C. To present a new finding. D. To comment on experts’ opinion.
33. What can we know from the recent study
A. Pet owners all treat pets as family members.
B. Some benefits of pet ownership are uncertain.
C. Many people suffer from stress and loneliness.
D. Pets can help improve owners’ mental health.
34. What does Rodriguez probably think of pet ownership
A. It benefits the disabled.
B. It helps all kinds of people.
C. It increases one’s bodily activity levels.
D. It does good to the well-being of the elderly.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. Reasons for petting a dog. B. Feelings of pet owners.
C. Advantages of pet ownership. D. Interactions between pets and owners.

On a Monday morning, Harry, 49, was singing to songs playing on his car’s stereo (立体声响). His daughter, Catherine, 16, was sitting beside him, worried that her classmates would notice her coming to school in her dad’s old car.
For Harry, this car was his great pride. It was his first love, which was passed down from his father. But for Catherine, it was a shame, and she hated it whenever her dad drove her to school in that car.
As Catherine stepped down from the car, she heard a loud noise from behind. “Hey, look! Old daddy, old car!!” some boys laughed. Later, when Harry came back to pick Catherine up, he was told she’d already left. He was shocked and immediately drove home. “Dear, I was waiting for you outside school. When did you come home ”
“My friend Peter dropped me home in his new e on, Daddy, you cannot expect me to always come home in your old car.” Catherine started advising him to buy a new car and do away with his old car.
“This is not just a car; it’s a treasure box of memories. I bought this car when I married your mother. I took you to Disneyland in this car. So many memories…” At this point, Harry could not hold back his tears and stormed out to get in his car. Sometimes, when he felt low and sad, he just talked to his car as though it were a living being. How deeply Harry loved that car! Several years later, Harry died. He passed his treasured car down to Catherine, and in his last letter, he had asked her not to sell it at any cost. Catherine parked it in the garage (车库) and forgot about it.
