W: That is not a proper excuse. You could set it ahead of the exact time so that you could have got up earlier and not have been late.

M: The thing is, when I got off, I found I had left my bag in his car. And it was too late to get it back when I realized that. I went straight to the nearest shop and gave him a call. I waited for five minutes before Mr. Green drove back.

M: Miss, you seem to know the entire story. May I go back to class now Otherwise I will be late for the following class.

M: 175 a night ! That’s highway robbery!
W: If you think that’s too steep, there are a few other options. We can get a courtyard room with no view for 120 a night or a room with an obstructed or peek-a-boo ocean views for 130 a night.
M: I don’t really care which type of room we get as long as we don’t end up with a room on the ground floor. I don’t like having people walking back and forth outside my window all night.
W: Okay, I can request a room on an upper floor. You really don’t have a preference
M: No, not really.
W: There is a penthouse room for 400 a night.
M: What ! For that price, I’d better get a view of the Eiffel Tower, the Parthenon, and the Great Wall of China!

【答案】17. A 18. B 19. C 20. B
【解析】
【原文】W: For millions of Americans, the most wonderful day of the year is December 25— Christmas. For one thing, it marks the end of the busy time of year. Many people need a rest after weeks of buying gifts, going to parties, organizing travel and getting their homes ready for the holiday. With all this, it is often said that Christmas has lost its meaning as the birthday of Jesus Christ. Some churches in the United States have called off Christmas Day services, so people can spend the day with their families. Another important part of the Christmas season is music. Among traditional carols, one of the most popular is “Silent Night”. But not all Americans celebrate Christmas. And even those who do might not celebrate it as a religious holiday. This is true of Christians as well as non-Christians. Still, they treat it as a special day. And it is hard to think of anyone that Christmas is more special for than children. Of course, this has a lot to do with the tradition of a kindly old man with a big belly and a bright red suit. Children know Santa Claus as the one who leaves gifts under the tree on Christmas Eve.

It was early winter several years ago. I had pulled out my old winter coat for another year’s use. It was still in pretty good shape although it was looking dirty from so many winters’ wear. I didn’t really need a new one but I wanted one and casually mentioned it to my daughter one day. She was such a sweet, loving girl that I should have guessed what would happen next. A few weeks later she gave me a new winter coat as a gift.
I put the old one in my closet and started to wear the new coat every day. Each day, though, when I opened my closet, something troubled me. It seemed a shame that my old but still good coat should just sit there keeping no one warm during the cold winter days. After a few weeks, I took it out and drove to a local charity shop. I knew that there was someone who couldn’t afford a coat but could get my old one.
My new coat is my old coat now. It is getting a little dirty and worn, too. It has black marks on the sleeves. It is in too bad shape to even donate to charity. I wonder if I should buy a new one soon, but I think I will wait for a while. I don’t really need a new one and maybe I can find something else to give to the charity shop instead.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Want is a growing giant whom the coat of Have was never large enough to cover.” Perhaps the best way to deal with our wants then is to give instead. Love, after all, brings us the most joy. And the more of it you give away, the more of it you have.
24. Which word can best describe the author’s daughter
A. Wealthy. B. Thoughtful. C. Easy-going. D. Humorous.
25. Why was the author in shame when seeing his old coat in the closet
A. It cost too much. B. It was looking dirty.
C. There was not enough room for his new coat. D. It was not sent to someone in need.
26. What is the author’s decision after his second coat becomes old
A. Telling his daughter. B. Buying a new one soon.
C. Donating it to charity. D. Sending something else to charity.
27. What does the author want to show in the last paragraph
A. Giving fills our wants. B. Love is the key to joy.
C. The more you give, the more you lose. D. A coat is large enough to cover our wants.
【答案】24. B 25. D 26. D 27. A
根据第一段中的“I didn’t really need a new one but I wanted one and casually mentioned it to my daughter one day. She was such a sweet, loving girl that I should have guessed what would happen next. A few weeks later she gave me a new winter coat as a gift. (我并不是真的需要一件新的,但我想要一件,有一天我不经意地向女儿提起了这件事。她是一个如此亲切、和善的女孩,我应该猜到接下来会发生什么。几个星期后,她送给我一件新的冬季外套作为礼物)”可知,作者的女儿在他不经意地提到想要一件冬季外套后,很快就给他送了一件作为礼物。由此可知,女儿是体贴的。故选B项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Each day, though, when I opened my closet, something troubled me. It seemed a shame that my old but still good coat should just sit there keeping no one warm during the cold winter days. (然而,每天当我打开衣柜的时候,总有一些事情困扰着我。在寒冷的冬天,我那件旧的但仍然很好的外套就这么坐在那里,没有给任何人保暖,这似乎是一种遗憾)”结合下文作者把旧衣服捐到慈善机构可知,作者看到旧外套感到遗憾,是因为自己没把这件衣服送去帮助有需要的人。故选D项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“It is in too bad shape to even donate to charity. (它的状况太糟糕了,甚至无法捐赠给慈善机构)”和“I don’t really need a new one and maybe I can find something else to give to the charity shop instead. (我真的不需要新的,也许我可以找点别的东西捐给慈善商店)”可知,第二件旧外套糟糕到无法捐赠,于是作者决定找别的物品送往慈善机构。故选D项。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Want is a growing giant whom the coat of Have was never large enough to cover.” Perhaps the best way to deal with our wants then is to give instead. Love, after all, brings us the most joy. And the more of it you give away, the more of it you have. 故选A项。
C
At this very moment around the world, athletes are stepping almost naked into freezing cold rooms. Why on earth are they doing this Because it’s supposed to help them feel better.
The treatment is called whole-body cryotherapy (冷冻疗法). Basketball star LeBron James, soccer great Cristiano Ronaldo, and boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. have all tried it. The therapy works like this. You take off everything but your underwear. Then you put on warm socks and gloves and step into a small room that looks sort of like a shower, except your head sticking 16% out the top. Once you’re locked in, air cooled to below -200°F (-129°C) fills the room. That’s way colder than Antarctica (南极洲). You stay in for two to three minutes.
Supporters believe the extremely cold air helps muscles recover faster and reduces other body pain. After his first cryotherapy sessions, Phil Mackenzie, a professional rugby player, felt noticeably better. He told Scientific American, “I felt refreshed right away. My sleep was better.” Soon, he was using it four times a week. Those who promote cryotherapy make all sorts of wild claims about its benefits. Supposedly, that extremely cold air can increase focus, improve skin tone, make you happier, burn calories, slow aging, and much more.
Is there any evidence to back up these incredible claims Nope. Several small scientific studies have looked at whether the therapy can improve muscle recovery after exercise, with encouraging results. But there just isn’t enough evidence to show that the therapy works. The benefits some people experience may just be the placebo effect. That’s when a patient’s expectation that a treatment will work leads to an improvement.
The US Food & Drug Administration has actually issued a warning about whole-body cryotherapy. It cautions that the liquid nitrogen (氮) used to cool the room may make it difficult to breathe. Frost bite is another potential risk, which is why participants wear gloves and socks.
What do you think Is it a chance for a better athletic performance worth the risk
28. What can we learn about the therapy according to the first two paragraphs
A. The whole-body cryotherapy can help athletes recover.
B. The therapy has won popularity with only great athletes.
C. People need to stay in a freezing small room with almost nothing on.
D. People need to wear gloves and socks after cold air fills the room.
29. Why does the author mention Phil Mackenzie in Paragraph 3
A. To explain a rule. B. To support an idea.
C. To present a fact. D. To make a prediction.
30. Why do people feel better after receiving the therapy
A. Many great athletes have received the therapy.
B. Extremely cold air is beneficial to people’s health.
C. Scientific studies have proved the effect of the therapy.
D. The therapy may have psychological benefit to them.
31. Which of the following best describes the authorities’ attitude to the therapy
A. Careful. B. Supportive. C. Unclear. D. Indifferent.
【答案】28. C 29. B 30. D 31. A

【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“Supporters believe the extremely cold air helps muscles recover faster and reduces other body pain. After his first cryotherapy sessions, Phil Mackenzie, a professional rugby player, felt noticeably better. He told Scientific American, “I felt refreshed right away. The secret to eating less and being happy about it may have been cracked years ago-by McDonald’s. According to anew study from Comnell University’s Food and Brand Lab, small non-food rewards-like the toys in McDonald’s Happy Meals-stimulate the same reward centers in the brain as food does.
The researchers, led by Martin Reimann, carried out a series of experiments to see if people would choose a smaller meal if it was paired with a non-food item.
They found that the majority of both kids and adults opted for a half-sized portion when combined with a prize. Both options were priced the same.
Even more interesting is that the promise of a future reward was enough to make adults choose the smaller portion. One of the prizes used was a lottery ticket, with a S10, $50 or $100 payout, and this was as effective as a tangible gift in persuading people to eat less.
“The fact that participants were willing to substitute part of a food item for the mere prospect of a relatively small monetary award is interesting,” says Reimann.
He theorizes that it is the emotional component of these intangible prizes that make them effective. In fact, vaguely-stated possibilities of winning a prize were more effective than options with hard odds included.
“One explanation for this finding is that possible awards may be more emotionally provoking than certainty awards,” says Reimann. “The uncertainty of winning provides added attraction and desirability through emotional ‘thrills.’ The possibility of receiving an award also produces a state of hope-a state that is in itself psychologically rewarding. “In other words, there’s a reason why people like to gamble.
How might this knowledge be used to help people eat more healthily
One possibility is a healthy option that offers the chance to win a spa weekend Or maybe the reward of a half-sized portion could be a half-sized dessert to be claimed only on a future date. That would get you back in the restaurant and make you eat a little less.
32. What do we learn about McDonald’s inclusion of toys in its Happy Meals
A. It may shed light on people’s desire to crack a secret.
B. It has proved to be key to McDonald’s business success.
C. It appeals to kid’s curiosity to find out what is hidden inside.
D. It may be a pleasant way for kids to reduce their food intake.
33. What is the finding of the researchers led by Martin Reimann
A. Reducing food intake is not that difficult if people go to McDonald’s more.
B. Most kids and adult s don’t actually feel hungry when they cat half of their meal.
C. Eating a smaller portion of food does good to the health of kids and adults alike.
D. Most kids and adults would choose a smaller meal that came with a non-food item.
34. What is most interesting in Martin Reimann’s finding
A. Kids preferred an award in the form of money to one in the form of a toy.
B. Adults chose the smaller portion on the mere promise of a future award.
C. Both kids and adults felt satisfied with only half of their meal portions.
D. Neither children nor adults could resist the temptation of a free toy.
35. What can we infer from Martin Reimann’s finding
A. People should eat much less if they wish to stay healthy and happy.
B. More fast food restaurants are likely to follow McDonald’s example.
C. We can lead people to eat less while helping the restaurant business.
D. More studies are needed to find out the impact of emotion on behavior.
【答案】32. D 33. D 34. B 35. C

Just Cycle And fold away
There’s no excuse not to get on your bike this spring. Get your indoor cycling fix and feel the benefits.
Great for general cardio (有氧的) fitness, exercise bikes can be a brilliant way of training at home. However, choosing the right bike is incredibly important, which is something that Roger Black and his team recognized when creating the Roger Black Folding Bike.
“Excellent value for money. Especially the ability to fold the exercise bike into a vertical (直立的) position and wheel it away for storage. This can also prevent you from throwing your clothes on it at the end of the day! Even if we are limited on space at home and work, we can continue physical activity with a Roger Black folding bike. This bike is helping me achieve my fitness goals following a recent running injury.”
——Brian Smith
“Best Present EVER are the words from my 77-year-old father who received his Roger Black fitness bike for his birthday. He said it is so simple and easy to use. The seat is VERY comfortable, so using it every day is a pleasure. It folds away nearly so it can be stored behind a door when necessary.”
——Anna Farnham

C To present a fact.
D
The secret to eating less and being happy about it may have been cracked years ago-by McDonald’s. According to anew study from Comnell University’s Food and Brand Lab small non-food rewards-like the toys in McDonald’s Happy Meals-stimulate the same reward centers in the brain as food does.
One of the prizes used was a lottery ticket with a S10, $50 or $100 payout, and this was as effective as a tangible gift in persuading people to eat less.
One possibility is a healthy option that offers the chance to win a spa weekend. Or maybe the reward of a half-sized portion could be a half-sized dessert to be claimed only on a future date.
A Kids preferred an award in the form of money to one in the form of a toy.
