As a Ph. D. student in a new country, lockdown and homesickness combined to leave me feeling lonely and desperate to meet people. To find the connections I was missing, I searched for opportunities that would involve teamwork as a volunteer on the Internet. A position matching graduate students with jobs drew my attention. It needed someone who would lead teams of graduate student volunteers to help bring in industry partners, and work with the university administration and student applicants. The chances to interact with all these different groups were appealing. I had no relevant experience and worried a disturbance to my study, but I still decided I might as well go for it and apply.
The first few weeks in my new role were challenging. Along with my routine study I was suddenly managing a team of four volunteers and meetings with industry professionals. At first, I was nervous in meetings with them, feeling I wasn’t prepared enough. But as I gained experience, the interactions became truly enjoyable and rewarding. Sometimes the conversations went beyond regular business to touch on career paths, personal challenges, and more. I began to enjoy the daily mix of activities.
I also learned about leadership. At the start, things seemed to go well until one of my team members told me I wasn’t including her fully in decision-making. I was upset; didn’t she trust my leadership But after I calmed down, I saw that maybe she had a point. So I began to ask team members to lead some of our meetings and encouraged them to express their views. This new approach allowed us to meet our targets while helping everyone feel more content and connected—as colleagues, but also as friends.
Beyond building relationships and skills, this experience expanded my horizons about my own professional future. Before I joined, I had only been exposed to academic career paths, and I assumed that was my future. Now I’ve realized I particularly enjoy feeling part of a team and affecting the lives of others. As I get closer to completing my Ph. D., I’m approaching job searches with a good idea of what I want.
1. What made the author decide to apply for the volunteer work
A. The relevance to her study. B. The longing for a family.
C. The desire for social contact. D. The previous work experience.
2. What can we learn about the author’s volunteer work
A. It drives her away from her study. B. It teaches her how to conduct business.
C. It allows her to adjust her attitude to life and career. D. It helps her identify the professional paths.
3. From the passage, we can learn that the author is ________.
A. open to new challenges B. proud of academic success
C. brave to overcome prejudice D. demanding of group members
【答案】1. C 2. D 3. A

Once small farmers in Masii, a remote village in Kenya, have picked their crops, all they can do is wait until a buyer trucks through. The system works fairly well for beans and corn, but mangoes-the area’s other main crop-spoil (腐烂) more quickly. If the trader is late, they rot.
Obadiah Kisaingu, a farmer in Masii, estimates 40% of the village’s mango crop is lost to spoilage. But a simple coating could change that. A company, SmartTech, has created a product that doubles the shelf life of fresh produce, enabling farmers like Kisaingu to access far-off, larger markets. More time for fresh produce on grocers' shelves also means less food waste-a $2.6 trillion problem, according to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
James Rogers, CEO of SmartTech, who has a Ph. D in materials science, wanted to solve the problem for food much in the same way that oxide barriers preventing rust (锈) have achieved for steel. Fortunately, researchers have found when plants made the jump from water to land hundreds of millions of years ago, they developed cutin, a barrier which is made of fatty acids that link together to form a seal around the plant, helping keep water in.
The cutin was such a grand strategy that today you'll still find it across the plant kingdom. Not that it's exactly the same solution across the board: An orange can last longer than a strawberry not so much because of the thickness of its skin, but because of the difference in the arrangement of those cutin molecules (分子)on the surface. SmartTech’s challenge was first identifying the key components of cutin. After extensive trials, Rogers and his team developed a natural and tasteless protective coating from plant material-stems, leaves and skins. The product extends the sweet spot between ripening and rot. And best of all, the treated produce doesn't require refrigeration.
SmartTech traveled a long road to get here. It was six years from launch before products applied with the substance were in stores. SmartTech-treated fruits and vegetables are already in large grocery chains in Europe and the U. S. and the company recently gained regulatory approval in several less developed countries in South America.
“SmartTech has huge potential to turn poor farmers in Africa into commercial farmers,” says Rogers. “That means more money in pockets, and more food in stomachs.” But whether the company can cost-effectively reach small farmers in far-off areas still remains a challenge.
4. The author mentions the small farmers in Kenya to _______________.
A. stress their need for preserving produce
B. show their difficulty in harvesting crops
C. evaluate their loss caused by slow transport
D. help express their wish to reach larger markets
5. What can we learn about SmartTech's product
A. It is financially supported by FAO.
B. It is intended to replace refrigeration.
C. It is designed to thicken produce’s skin.
D. It is based on plants’ own defence system.
6. What does James Rogers expect
A. To profit farmers. B. To earn more money.
C. To produce more food. D. To expand grocery chains.
7. The main purpose of the passage is to _______________.
A. prove a theory B. promote a product
C. introduce a company D. present a technology

It all started when I typed a perfectly reasonable prompt (提示词) into one of several apps on the market that can create an image based on text. “Skull space laser dinosaur starship explosion,” I wrote. The app processed for a few seconds, and returned four images, one of which was strangely accurate: a dinosaur-looking skull screamed out of an empty space, trailing fire. It looked like an illustration from the art magazine, and perhaps art from the magazine influenced its creation.
Text-to-image AIs identify images by looking at the text that people have used to describe those pictures online. When the app got my prompt, it studied images that random people had described as “dinosaur” or laser and soon then used what is called a diffusion model (扩散模型) to add a bunch of random chaos to those pictures. Once they were suitably completed, it “upscaled” them, removing noise and sharpening focus. Its work is so good that an artist using it recently won first place for digital images at the Colorado State Fair.
But there are major ethical (道德的) issues raised by the success of such AIs. The biggest has to do with those training data sets. Reporters recently discovered that the data set used by Text-to-image AIs contained images of violence. Some companies are working on ways to prevent the public from seeing images based on offensive and illegal pictures in the data set. A representative of the companies also noted that the images in its data set are “already available in the public internet on publicly available websites”.
But even if this problem is fixed there is still the question of all the other pictures online that are being transformed into AI-generated masterpieces. As many artists have pointed out, their works are being used without payment. The image-generating algorithm (算法) creates illustrations and even movies by using data sets stocked with art stolen from artists who post their works online.
Some AI researchers argue that their algorithms aren’t stealing from artists so much as learning from them just as human artists learn from each other. But a more ethical approach would be for companies to acknowledge their debt to artists and create a model of voluntary collective licensing, much like what radio stations first did in radio’s early days. Back then, musicians created groups like BMI to collectively license their music to radio stations — then BMI would pay artists based on how often their songs were played. Perhaps artists and art institutions today could form a “collecting society” that would allow companies to license their artwork for data sets.
To create ethical AI systems, we need to acknowledge the people whose work makes those systems so magical. We can’t simply snarf up every image online — we need humans to manage those data sets and we need to pay them to do it.
8. What can we learn about Text-to-image AIs from the first two paragraphs
A. They are developed to process pictures.
B. They are used to describe online pictures.
C. They use a diffusion model to combine pictures.
D. They create their works based on online pictures.
9. One of the issues raised by the success of Text-to-image AIs is ______.
A. the influence upon art creation. B. the availability of online pictures.
C. the neglect of the artists’ copyright. D. the prospect of artists being replaced.
10. Why did the author mention BMI in Paragraph 5
A. To introduce the role that BMI played in AI history.
B. To present a way to regulate the use of online pictures.
C. To prove the necessity of licensing music to radio stations.
D. To demonstrate the urgency of forming a collecting society.
11. What can we infer from the passage
A. It is not practical to improve the image-generating algorithm.
B. The function of Text-to-image AIs shouldn’t be underestimated.
C. Human efforts should be valued in the application of Text-to-image AIs.
D. Companies should be held responsible for the illegal pictures on public websites.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. C

Surrounded by the sea off the coast in Mid-Norway, lies an island called Myken. This small island has about ten permanent residents, and for more than 50 years has been supplied with electricity via a 32-kilometer undersea cable (电缆). A break that appeared in the cable last autumn resulted in two months without power, so the island community started looking into a better way of sourcing their electricity.
“Myken is far out at sea, so as far as possible it should be taking care of things itself,” says Kyrre Sundseth, who is a hydrogen (氢) researcher in Norway and also the project manager for Myken’s energy project. “This is why we want Myken to become entirely self-sufficient in energy. It is also important to take the environment into consideration,” he says.
Much points to the idea that the solution may lie in a Hydrogen plant, specifically tailored for small islands. The “raw materials” for hydrogen production come from nature itself in the form of the sun and wind. Researchers have calculated that energy costs will be lower by using hydrogen production than the undersea cable option. And it is possible to store energy in the form of hydrogen for longer periods. This means that supplies will not have to rely on a lot of expensive batteries or external energy sources, even during periods when the sun isn’t shining, or the wind isn’t blowing.
The Myken project has attracted several technology companies. They are currently working on a pilot project. The pilot involves experiments on the feasibility (可行性) of the hydrogen system in which electricity is generated from solar and wind sources. The electricity can be used immediately, but during periods when all the energy generated is not required, the spare energy can be used to split seawater into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen can be stored in a tank, and used later to generate electricity. The pilot will help researchers know more about how effectively the system will work in the hydrogen plant. Since the island has a distillery (酿酒厂), where the distillation (蒸馏) process relies on energy, a hydrogen plant on Myken offers an even greater environmental benefit. Spare heat from the hydrogen system can also be used for the heating part in the distillation process.
“In Norway alone there are about 300 island inhabited all year round by small populations,” says Kyrre Sundseth. “All of these islands may be candidates for using this technology. In global terms we’re talking about 10,000 similar islands.”
12. Why is a hydrogen plant suitable for Myken
A. It is perfect in size for small islands.
B. It can send electricity to faraway places.
C. It will restore local natural environment.
D. It provides green and sustainable energy.
13. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 4
A. The study on the energy storage.
B. The test on the hydrogen system.
C. The experiment on the raw materials.
D. The research on the innovation of the pilot.
14. According to the passage, a hydrogen plant will ______.
A. produce purified seawater
B. prove more technically reliable
C. contribute in more than one way
D. benefit from the distillation process
15. What does Kyrre Sundseth think of the project
A. Promising.
B. Systematic.
C. Irreplaceable.
D. Time saving.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A

A
As a Ph. D. student in a new country, lockdown and homesickness combined to leave me feeling lonely and desperate to meet people.
Along with my routine study, I was suddenly managing a team of four volunteers and meetings with industry professionals.
B
C

Much points to the idea that the solution may lie in a Hydrogen plant specifically tailored for small islands.
