However, without warning, my strength was running out. My lungs fought to take in enough air, and my feet transformed into cement bricks. Neck and neck with one of my greatest rivals. I could see the finish line. I had begun the final sprint into glory when my knees buckled and my legs gave way. Nothing I could do would make them hold my weight. They were as weak as jelly. Even though I knew my dreams of victory had been destroyed, I had to finish the race. With all of the strength left in me, I got on my hands and knees and crawled, inch by inch, across the finish line. Shame pulsed through my veins as Dad squatted down and pulled me into his arms.
I whispered, "I'm so sorry I disappointed you, Dad." after the race. He gave me a gentle smile and said. "You could never disappoint me. Sometimes these things just happen. All that matters is that you did your best. "Lifting my face, I saw my dad's eyes, in which I saw the sweat, the time. and the work we had put into our dream. The miles we had run together, all for this race flashed across my mind. "But we worked so hard. What about our dream " I asked. In that second, the world stood still. He reached over for my hand, holding back his own tears, and said. "Don't you know that you are my dream come true "

W: Good evening, and welcome to this week’s “Business World”, the program for and about business people. Tonight we have Mr. Steven Kane who has just taken over a bicycle shop. Tell us, Mr. Kane, what made you want to run your own store
M: Well, I’ve always loved racing bikes and fixing them. When I was working full-time as a sales man for a big company, I seldom had time to enjoy my hobby. I knew then that as soon as I had enough money to get my own business going, I’d do it. I had my heart set on it, and I didn’t let anything stand in my way. I knew I’d love being my own boss. Now my time is my own. I open the store when I want and leave when I want.
W: You mean you don’t keep regular hours
M: Well, the sign on my store says the hours are 10:00 to 6:00, but if business is slower than usual, I can just lock up and take off early.
W: Have you got any people to work with you yet
M: Yeah, a couple of friends of mine who love biking as much as I do. They help me out a few days a week. It’s great because ... we play cards or just sit around and talk when there are no customers.
W: Thank you, Mr. Kane. We wish you success in your new business.

With 19:40 on the clock in the first half of the University of Vermont’s match-up against Albany in March, Josh Speidel caught a pass and scored. The crowd went wild, and the coaches and players of both teams hugged Josh. Josh announced, “I did it! I’m a college basketball player!”
Making a single lay-up (单手上篮) would be no big deal for the average player. But five years ago, Josh suffered a brain injury in a car accident only months after signing with the UVM Catamounts. Josh had offers from 15 universities, but playing for UVM had always been his dream.
After the accident, he went into a coma (昏迷) and the doctors told his parents that he might remain in a vegetative state or need round the-clock care for the rest of his life. But his parents never lost faith that their son would wake up, and agreed they wouldn’t tell Josh his terrible prognosis when he did.
Four weeks later Josh proved them right. Not only did he learn to walk and talk again, soon he was even working out. But the goal of playing basketball was a driving force in Josh’s recovery.
Just a year and a half after the accident, he headed off to Burlington, Vermont to start college. With periodic arm tremors and short-term memory loss, Josh knew he would never play for UVM, but he watched every practice from the sideline and became an important part of the team. UVMs associate head coach Kyle Cieplicki, who’d been Josh’s lead recruiter, said, “He’s shown the whole team how to handle adversity.”
Now 24, Josh will graduate from UVM in May with a 3.4 GPA. He’s majoring in education and social services, and plans to work with kids. Josh tells people who are struggling with their own challenges,” Always have a goal in your head and chase after it as hard as you can. And whenever you need help, ask.”

As one of the most important languages in the world, Latin had humble beginnings. It originated along the Tiber River in Italy and only a handful of people spoke the language. Over time, Latin became more well-known as Romans gained political power. Many famous literary texts and scientific classifications(分类) were written in Latin. Even though knowing Latin indicated(表明) a person was educated, according to Britannica, in the 20th century less people learned Latin, leading it to be classified as a “dead” language.
There are around 7,000 living languages in the world, but, according to Britannica, “more than half are at risk of dying out by the end of the 21st century.” Civilizations evolve over time and so do languages. More often than not, a language dies because everyone who speaks the language dies. For example, Marie Smith Jones, perhaps the last native speaker of the Alaskan Eyak language died at the age of 89 in 2008, and so did the language. Now, less and less people speak Latin, which raises public's awareness about its protection.
Actually there are many other reasons as to why Latin should be protected or taught. “It is a window into a fascinating ancient civilization, and studying an ancient civilization teaches us to respect different points of view and unfamiliar cultural practices,” says Kathleen Coleman, James Loeb Professor of Harvard University.
Since it isn’t used in ordinary conversations, there are a lot of difficulties that arise from teaching Latin. “Teaching a ‘dead’ language is different from teaching other languages,” explains Coleman, “because there are no native speakers to show us how it sounds or answer questions about the meaning of words or explain idioms. Though it’s hard, fortunately, we still can find the answers to our questions from the fragmentary(残缺不全的) evidence available in written texts. ”
28.What can we learn about Latin from the Paragraph 1
A. Latin was well-known since its birth.
B. All people did not learn Latin in the 20th century.
C. Latin was not favored by scientists and writers.
D. Only educated people learned Latin in the past.
29. The author mentions Marie Smith Jones in the Paragraph 2 to show _____ .
A. Latin is going to be a dead language
B. why people should be aware of protecting languages
C. what it really means when all language speakers die
D. he is the last native speaker of the Alaskan Eyak language
30. Why should people learn Latin according to Coleman
A. To show unfamiliar practices. B. To respect others’ opinions.
C. To protect a “dead” language. D. To learn about an ancient society.
31. What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows
A. The development of Latin. B. The learning methods.
C. The written materials. D. The difficulties in learning Latin.

Humans evolve (进化) from apes. This is what we learned in biology class. But what came before apes Chinese scientists have discovered fossils (化石) that could enrich the evolutionary story of how humans evolved from fish.
According to four articles published in the journal Nature in late September, Chinese researchers found fish fossils that provide the “missing link” about the origin of the jaw (颌:颚), a key feature that 99.8 percent of vertebrate (脊椎动物) species have.
Zhu Min, a lead researcher of the studies from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that the findings drew a large amount of interest in the science world because of the importance of jaws in animal evolution.
However, the rise of the jaw had been a secret for a lack of enough fossil evidence to support that jawed vertebrates lived 450 million years ago.
The latest findings made by Zhu’s team presented a set of five surprisingly well-preserved fish fossils that included three whole-bodied fish, helping scientists paint a more correct evolutionary picture of the origin of the jaw. The fish fossils were discovered at two places in Chongqing and Guizhou, whose strata (岩层) date back to the Silurian Time that began around 440 million years ago.
These fossils show that jawed fish were already rising in the world’s ancient oceans at that time. Later, more different and larger jawed fish evolved and began to spread around the world, paving the way for some fish to finally go on land and evolve into other animals-including humans.
These fossils provide a good opportunity to understand the ‘dawn of fish’ and help scientists trace many human body structures back to these ancient fish thus filling some key gaps in the evolutionary history of how fish evolved into humans, “Zhu said.
32. In which column of a magazine will you most probably read the passage
A. Entertainment. B. Animals. C. Science. D. History.
33. Why did the findings draw a large amount of interest in the science world
A. Because there is a lack of fish fossils.
B. Because jaws are a key feature of all species.
C. Because the missing of the jaw had been a mystery.
D. Because jaws are significant while animals evolve.
34. What does the underlined phrase “at that time” refer to
A. Around 440 million years ago. B. Around 450 million years ago.
C. When fish evolved into humans. D. When jawed fish began to spread around the world.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Who Are Our Ancestors B. What Came Before Apes
C. The Origin of the Jaw D. Key Steps in Evolution

My dad and I had been looking forward to the State cross-country race of my senior year of high school, which would be the climax (顶点) of my existence.
I was the fastest runner on my team, and I was supposed to make it into the top fifteen. We had been working towards this race for three years. It was everything to me, and it was everything to my dad. He was a runner and was wild with joy by my success in running. He made it to every race, even flying home early from business trips to see me run. I always listened for his voice, which rang above the crowd - telling me to relax my arms, calling out my time. He pushed me. He cheered for me. He believed in me. We spent countless hours on the sandy canals of Arizona. Breathing in the dust of the desert, the blossoms of the orange trees, and the terrible smell of the dairy farm, we made our way across the city. We pounded miles and miles into our running shoes, marking with every step the path to greatness. It was a journey that was just ours. A dream passed on from one generation to the next.
Then the big day came. It was hotter than normal-too hot. My throat felt like a field of cotton, cracked with the summer heat, as I waited for the gun to fire. I gazed out at the crowd: dozens of familiar faces from church and school flickered(一闪而过) across my view. They had come for me. They were counting on me. I saw my dad set his watch, worry and excitement etched(流露) across his face. With the sound of a gunshot, the race began.
For the first two and half miles, I felt great. I had never before been so ready for something. The weeks leading up to the race were filled with hard practices and a strict diet. The scorching(酷热的) sun beat upon my back, blinding me with its brilliance. Nothing was going to stop me, though.
Paragraph 1:However, without warning, my strength was running out(耗尽).
Paragraph 2:I whispered, “I’m so sorry I disappointed you, Dad.” after the race.
