I fell in love with the minister’s son the winter I turned fourteen. He was not Chinese. When I found out that my parents had invited the minister’s family over for Christmas Eve dinner, I cried. What would Robert think of our shabby Chinese Christmas What would he think of our noisy Chinese relatives who lacked proper American manners What terrible disappointment would he feel upon seeing not a roasted turkey and sweet potatoes but Chinese food
On Christmas Eve I saw that my mother had outdone herself in creating a strange menu. She was pulling back lines out of the backs of fleshy prawns. The kitchen was littered with piles of raw food: a fish with bulging eyes begging not to be thrown into a pan of hot oil, a bowl of soaking dried fungus back to life, a plate of squids whose backs were crisscrossed with knife markings so they resembled bicycle tires.
And then they arrived — the minister’s family and all my relatives. Robert said hello, and I pretended he was not worthy of existence. Dinner threw me deeper into despair. My relatives licked the ends of their chopsticks and reached across the table, dipping them into the dozen or so plates of food. Robert and his family waited patiently for plates to be passed to them. My relatives whispered with pleasure when my mother brought out the whole steamed fish. Robert made faces. Then my father poked his chopsticks just below the fish eye and pulled out the soft meat. “Amy, your favourite,” he said, offering me the tender fish cheek. I wanted to disappear. I remained silent for the rest of the night.
After everyone had gone, my mother said to me, “You want to be the same as American girls on the outside. But inside you must always be Chinese. You must be proud you are different. Your only shame is to have shame.”
36. The writer felt ________ upon knowing that the minister’s family had been invited over for Christmas Eve dinner.
A. excited B. worried C. disappointed D. confused
37. In the second paragraph, the writer described the kitchen scene in such a way as to ________.
A. paint a vivid picture of how busy her mother was
B. explain the reason why her mother created such a menu
C. support the claim that the Christmas menu was strange
D. introduce the typical Chinese dishes served on Christmas Eve
38. What can be inferred about the writer based on what happened during the dinner
A. She suffered greatly during the dinner. B. She hated eating the fish cheek below the eye.
C. She regretted not talking more with Robert. D. She was picky about the Christmas menu.
39. Why did the writer’s mother have a talk with her that night
A. To inform her of the cultural gap between the east and the west.
B. To share her understanding of the word “shame”.
C. To encourage her to become integrated into the local community.
D. To urge her to be proud of her Chinese roots.

Experience the wonder of a Hot Air Balloon Flight for 2 people. Rising before dawn, you can join the crew in unpacking and preparing the balloon for flight—which is a spectacle in itself! After an exciting launch, you’ll drift with the wind silently over the parklands, homes and hills of the Hawkesbury region of Sydney.
Hot Air Ballooning begins in the cool, still hours of the early morning, when the air is more stable. The launch site, determined by the weather on the morning, will be in or around the beautiful Hawkesbury Valley. The adventure begins by inflating (使…充气) the balloon using a giant portable fan. Once the balloon starts to take shape the burner is lit, heating the air inside. The hot air inside is lighter than the cool air outside and this is what creates the lift and why it is called a Hot Air Balloon. Passengers are welcome to assist the pilot and crew with inflating the hot air balloon at the launch site, which only takes about 20 minutes.
The Hot Air Balloon Flight for 2 is both quaint and peaceful. You hear very little sound from the awakening world below. The silence is only broken with blasts from the propane burner heating the air in your balloon to keep you cruising across the skies. Watch as the sun bursts from the horizon and paints the sky pink in a spectacular morning sunrise. To top off the morning you’ll celebrate with a full gourmet breakfast. This adventure is for 2 people.

A new study suggests the Apple Watch was able to identify abnormal heart rates that could be linked to a serious heart condition.
More than 400,000 Apple Watch users volunteered for the study. It was a project of researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Apple, the American technology company, provided money for the study. Results were recently presented at a major conference on heart health in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The researchers looked for signs of atrial fibrillation, also called “a-fib”, the most common form of irregular heartbeat. Some people with a-fib feel changes in their heartbeat, while others do not. Because of this, many people do not know they have the condition. People with untreated a-fib are about five times more likely to suffer a stroke. In the United States, a-fib causes an estimated 130,000 deaths and 750,000 hospitalizations each year.
People taking part in the study wore the Apple Watch for extended periods. The devices contain an app that continuously gathers information without users having to do anything. It uses the watch’s light sensor technology to measure blood flow. The system is designed to identify changes that might show an irregular heartbeat.
The researchers said that out of those taking part, about 2,000 subjects received a warning from the device that they might have a problem. Those individuals were then asked to contact a doctor, who decided whether they should receive more close watch for a possible irregular heartbeat.
Lloyd Minor head of Stanford’s School of Medicine, said in a statement that the results show great promise in using technology to create “more predictive and preventive health care”. Doctor Minor added that a-fib is just one example of a condition devices can help identify in the future. “This study opens the door to further research into wearable technologies and how they might be used to prevent disease before it strikes,” he said.
But some health researchers warned against making any general judgements based on the Apple-financed study. They have called for much more research to measure the effectiveness of wearable devices to identify signs of disease. Richard Kovacs, who was with the American College of Cardiology and was not involved with the study, told the Associated Press that despite the results, the Apple Watch system “is not perfect.” He noted that since the study did not have a comparison group getting regular ECG measurements, there is no way of knowing if the device missed heartbeat problems. This could give users a false sense of security, he said.
Other experts agreed that more studies are needed before similar device-based health observation systems are widely recommended.
43. What does the new study mainly find out
A. Apple Watch can warn of heart problems. B. Apple Watch can protect people against a-fib.
C. Abnormal heart rates can cause a stroke. D. Heart problems can be identified and cured.
44. Apple Watch identifies irregular heartbeats by _____.
A. measuring the wearer’s heart rates B. sending information to the wearer through an app
C. extending the time of wearing it D. monitoring the wearer’s bloodstream
45. Which of the following might be what Lloyd Minor means in his statement
A. It’s difficult for doctors to predict and prevent disease now.
B. A-fib is just one example of a condition that causes heart problems.
C. Wearable technologies might identify and treat any disease one day.
D. There are more possibilities of development in wearable technology.
46. It can be concluded from the passage that _____.
A. wearable technologies are developing fast but shouldn’t be applied to medicine
B. the study results are inspiring but more proofs are needed to ensure the accuracy
C. the study is sponsored by a commercial company so the results are a little unfair
D. device-based health observation systems are convenient and should be widely used

Dining in China: Culture Shock
Before coming to China, I thought of Chinese food as General Tso’s chicken, egg rolls, and fortune cookies. ____47____ In my first few weeks here, the group I was working with went out to dozens of group dinners. We were introduced to the Chinese way of dining out, and there was quite a bit of culture shock involved.
For one, the community style of dining was new to me. In America, I was used to sharing an appetizer with someone sometimes and then everyone ordering their own main course. In China, many dishes are ordered and placed on a lazy Susan. The table is spun around and you grab what you like. And we’re not just talking a starter, a main, and dessert here; a Chinese dinner is a marathon of food. ____48____ of course, there are always some staple foods around-rice, dumplings, or noodles. Soup comes last in a Chinese dinner instead of first, and dessert usually consists of a massive fruit plate.
Using chopsticks was also new to me and took quite some time to get used to. It was always embarrassing at first when I couldn’t grab something tasty from the moving table and had to wait until the next time around. After years of practice, I can now confidently snatch a peanut as it’s flying by me on a lazy Susan-practice really does make perfect! In the first few months, I was laughed at so many times by Chinese people while they watched me struggle with chopsticks. That probably explains why one of my favorite things to do while dining out in many Western restaurants in town is watching young, trendy Chinese people struggle with their forks and knives.
I had eaten chow mein before, as well as egg fried rice and Kung Pao chicken, but there were plenty of Chinese dishes that gave me culture shock in my first few months here. ____49____ While Americans basically only eat chicken breasts, wings, and thighs, Chinese will also dig into the liver, heart and especially the feet. There’s an old Chinese belief that eating an animal organ will benefit your corresponding organ-eating a heart is good for your heart, and eating a brain will make you smart. You can figure out the rest yourself.
Despite all of this food-related culture shock, I can honestly say that one of the best things about living here is the food and dining out. Chinese cuisine is so complex and varied that you could spend an entire lifetime here and not taste it all. ____50____ To be honest, now when I go home to visit I actually end up missing Chinese food more. Sometimes, culture shock is a good thing!
A. People often ask me about what food I miss the most from back home.
B. I understand that Chinese food is closely related to the Chinese way of life.
C. After arriving here, I quickly found out that not a single one of those things is served in China.
D. For example, Chinese people enjoy eating just about any part of an animal.
E. When Chinese people place an order, they are expecting a series of courses.
F. Usually it starts out with some cold dishes, and then moves into a wide variety of main courses.

Some I am grateful for, yet some have not been beneficial. However, all of them have taught me so many different things, and I would not have been able to ___12___ my first year of high school without them. The things I have learned have been so helpful to me and can also ___13___ to things outside of school.
1. You’re expected to demonstrate maturity and responsibility
High school teachers won’t ___14___ “hold your hand” as much as middle school teachers did. Your teachers may move faster through lessons. If speaking up makes you nervous at first, you can start by using email to build your ___16___ level and confidence.
High school teachers enforce higher standards, and most don’t tolerate some of the behaviors that were acceptable in middle school. Again, the goal is to prepare you for college and real life. Even if the ___17___ seems tough at first, remember that you’re learning helpful and important life skills.
2. Find out who your true friends are
Genuine friends are friends that you can tell everything to and they will not tell anyone else without your permission. They are also there whenever you need them, whether that is to rant or you just need a shoulder to cry on. When you find your true friends, stick with them. The thing about friends is: quality over ___18___.
To be honest, high school is not easy at first, but with time, you will get to appreciate and ___19___ everything around your experiences. A
I fell in love with the minister’s son the winter I turned fourteen.
Robert said hello and I pretended he was not worthy of existence.

D. introduce the typical Chinese dishes served on Christmas Eve

Once the balloon starts to take shape the burner is lit, heating the air inside. The hot air inside is lighter than the cool air outside and this is what creates the lift and why it is called a Hot Air Balloon. 【42题详解】
细节理解题。根据“ Hot Air Balloon Flight for 2 (there will be others in the balloon basket with you).(2人热气球飞行(气球篮里还有其他人))”可知,除了游客,还有其他人员,故A项错误;根据“Once the balloon starts to take shape the burner is lit, heating the air inside. The hot air inside is lighter than the cool air outside and this is what creates the lift and why it is called a Hot Air Balloon.(一旦气球开始成形,燃烧器就会被点燃,加热内部的空气。

Lloyd Minor, head of Stanford’s School of Medicine, said in a statement that the results show great promise in using technology to create “more predictive and preventive health care”.

【答案】47. C 48. F 49. D 50. A
