一、阅读理解
What's a dust devil (尘卷风) sound like on Mars America's Perseverance, a vehicle used to explore Mars, recorded the loud noise when one passed directly overhead. It's about 10 seconds of sounds of not only the wind blowing up to 40 kph, but hundreds of dust grains hitting the vehicle. Scientists released the first-of-its-kind audio (音频) Tuesday. It sounds strikingly similar to dust devils on Earth, although quieter since Mars' thin atmosphere makes for more muted sounds and less forceful wind.
The dust devil came and went over Perseverance quickly last year, thus the short length of the audio, said the University of Toulouse's Naomi Murdoch. At the same time, the camera on the parked rover (探测器) shot images, while its weather-monitoring instrument collected data. "It was fully caught red-handed, which greatly shook me. Catching a dust devil in space really takes some luck, "said German Martinez of the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston. Photographed for decades on Mars but never heard until now, dust devils are common on the red planet. This one was in the average range at least 118 meters tall and 25 meters across, traveling at 5 meters per second.
Given that the rover's microphone is turned on for less than three minutes every few days, Murdoch said it was "definitely luck" that the dust devil appeared when it did. She said there was just a 1-in-200 chance of recording the dust-devil sound and that of the 84 minutes collected in its first year, there was "only one dust devil recording".
This same microphone on Perseverance provided the first sounds from Mars—namely the Martian wind—soon after the rover landed on Mars. It followed up with audio of the rover driving around and its companion helicopter flying nearby. These recordings allow scientists to study the Martian wind, sudden and violent movements of air, and now dust movement as never before, Murdoch said.

B.How dust is transported around Mars.
C.How air movements impact the rover.
D.How rovers work with helicopters in space.
Karen Rodricks, senior library services supervisor (主管) at the Washington County-based Lake Elmo Library in Minnesota, didn't think the package she found on a library service desk on Wednesday was going to be anything out of the ordinary. People have different ways of dealing with waste paper, specifically used newspapers. Some put them in the recycling area, while others keep them as wrappers. While these are both good measures, a Japanese publishing company had a better idea for their end use.
The Mainichi Newspapers Co., Ltd.invented the "Green Newspaper", which allows people to grow plants with it. This unique newspaper was published on Greenery Day, which is an edition devoted to environmental news and made of green paper with seeds placed into it. What makes it even more sustainable is the ink(油墨)used to print words and photos, which is made from plants. The publisher advised readers to tear the used newspaper into small pieces and plant them in a container with soil. They should water them, like they would do for any plant. Within a few weeks, the seeds will grow into plants.
This brilliant concept was invented by Dentsu Inc., one of Japan's most distinguished advertising agencies, which works with the publishing company on the initiative. The publisher's core belief is environmental sustainability. As its mission statement says, "The Mainichi doesn't take action only through information, but also by solving global issues." With joint efforts, this initiative has reached the corners of Japan and sold around millions of copies daily. Other such initiatives producing plantable paper are also seen in India and the US.
Approximately 95 million trees are lost for producing newspapers every year. The Internet, the number of whose users represents 62.5 percent of the population worldwide, has impacted how people look at the news and the print readership has declined dramatically. Likewise, the reinvention and reimagination of this newspaper can bring about a revolution in the publishing industry as well as having an environmental impact.

A.By listing statistics.
B.By making a comparison.
C.By conducting surveys.

B.The publishing industry sees a green milestone.

Every year, millions of birds fly between Mexico’s Sierra Madre Oriental mountains and the Gulf of Mexico from August to November to escape cold temperatures, giving rise to an event known as the “River of Raptors”, which brings hundreds of foreign birdwatchers to the coastal area of Veracruz.
“Many of my customers have been at other famous bird migration sites but say they have never seen anything as grand as the ‘River of Raptors’ in Veracruz,” said Steven Koevoet, a birdwatching guide who has shown visitors places in Yucatan and Veracruz for over 25 years.
Yet the yearly event has not led to a large increase in ecotourism. Critics suggest the lack of increased ecotourism is mainly caused by Mexico’s failure to encourage tourism away from its beach resorts. Environmentalists believe high levels of violence and environmentally unfriendly practices are also problems for developing ecotourism in the states of Chiapas and Veracruz. Violence has stopped birdwatching for years in some places, where the activity was an important source of income for local communities.
But, environmental groups, universities and farmers in Veracruz are trying to change this. Angel Viveros, a rancher (大农场主), uses land owned by his family for activities including birdwatching, horse riding, skydiving and hiking. Supported by the non-profit group Pronatura Veracruz, which studies and counts the birds in the yearly migration, he is now receiving hundreds of visitors yearly. Local coffee producers organize coffee tastings and educational talks about the importance of birds in spreading seeds. A green, bird-friendly stamp for those producers could be the next step. One retiree who has been visiting Veracruz since 2002 had this to say, “Apart from feeling the physical relaxation, it is like something spiritual ... there are no words to describe what it feels like to see the river of birds.”
16、What is the “River of Raptors” known for
A. The rich diversity of birds. B. The size of birds’ migrating.
C. The number of birdwatchers. D. The long distance of migration.
17、Why is Steven Koevoet mentioned
A. To stress the popularity of the event.
B. To explain his intention to be a guide.
C. To show his devotion to local tourism.
D. To prove the impressiveness of the event.
18、What prevents the development of ecotourism in Mexico according to critics
A. The lack of government support.
B. High levels and frequency of violence.
C. Disagreement among local communities.
D. The adoption of not eco-friendly methods.
19、What can be inferred about ecotourism from the last paragraph
A. People hold different attitudes to it.
B. Joint efforts are made to develop it.
C. It is a major source of income for the locals.
D. It has an uncertain future in Veracruz.

参考答案
1、答案:A
解析:根据画线词前的“It sounds strikingly similar to dust devils on Earth, although quieter since Mars' thin atmosphere makes for...less forceful wind”可知,火星尘 卷风和地球上的尘卷风听起来非常相似,尽管声音更 轻柔,since后解释了“quieter”的原因。再结合“muted” 和“less forceful”的近义关系可推断,画线词muted意为 “减轻的,减弱的”,weak的含义与之相似,故选 A。
2、答案:D
解析:根据第二段中的Martinez所说的话“It was fully caught red-handed, which greatly shook me. Catching a dust devil in space really takes some luck”可知,尘卷风是被“当场” 捕捉到,这让Martínez大吃一惊。在太空 中捕捉到尘卷风真的需要一些运气。由 此可知,Martínez认为“毅力”号捕捉到尘 卷风是非常令人吃惊的。
3、答案:C
解析:根据第三段中的“Given that the rover's microphone is turned on for less than three minutes every few days... when it did”可知, 探测器的麦克风每隔几天会打开不到三分 钟,这个尘卷风出现时麦克风刚好处于工作 状态“绝对是运气”。由此可推知,“毅力”号 捕捉到并录下这次尘卷风纯属巧合。
4、答案:B

42、答案:
Dear Peter,
I`m happy to hear from you. Just as you`ve learned, artificial intelligence is now widely used in China. Here I`d like to share with you what I experienced during the National Day holiday.
First of all, wherever and whenever we went, we could use the mobile payment. More interestingly, we no longer had to get into tourist attractions with the ID card. We could do it through a face recognition app now, which really saved time so that we didn`t have to wait in a queue. What an amazing experience!
I do hope you can come to China and experience all of this when you have spare time. Looking forward to your coming.
Yours,
Li Hua
