This year I did something I'd never done—shopping at midnight on Black Friday after Thanksgiving. After all, you can get great deals online from the comfort of your bed over a hot cup of coffee. So why would I stand traffic, cold weather and crowds for a few bargains
For my teenagers, spending time with Mom is usually down on their list next to homework and picking up the dog waste. So, when they asked me to take them shopping at the mall at midnight on Black Friday, my first reaction was definitely no! But my son, who usually runs the other way if I mention shopping, wanted me to take him shopping. I felt needed, though I knew it was my wallet and a ride, not quality(高质量的) time with Mom that they wanted.
Then the hour-long car ride. We followed songs on the radio and talked about the deals we hoped to get. I had opportunities to give them lessons on what not to do when driving, but I had to keep the peace. And we all connected as we sat with crazed smiles at midnight.
The kids scanned for a spot once we finally reached the busy parking lot. There was something about standing in a line that snakes around the building in the freezing cold that brings people together. Once inside, we had to work as a team, hoping to come together with just the right size and color. As I dug through mountain s of clothing for a particular shirt for my husband and gave up, my daughter came toward me, shirt in hand and victory on her face. “I got the last one!”
So we ended up at 3 am with some bargains. Nothing we couldn't have found online or in stores at a reasonable hour. But for me, I got quality time with my kids. Driving home tired, looking in the mirror at my children's sweet faces, I decided, “If they ask me to go again next year, I'm in.”
24. What did the kids need according to the author

A. She had worked as a team member. B. She had searched out her clothes.
C. She had been in line to see a snake. D. She had found a shirt for her father.
27. How did the author find her shopping experience
A. Tiring. B. Enjoyable.
C. Heart-broken. D. Money-wasting.

Fishing trips to Canada are a tradition for Jeffrey Hardy and his three friends from America. This summer in 2023, the forest air polluted with wildfire smoke forced the men to give up their mid-June fishing plan. Canada's wildfire season put its tourism industry at a crucial time.
Except some days of poor air quality, major Canadian cities remain unaffected by wildfires. The fires are in the country's northern areas that have drawn travelers interested in outdoor experiences in years past.
In a recent report by Destination Canada, a marketing organization, half of the total spent by international visitors is in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. But other Canadian destinations attractive to visitors have been affected by the wildfires.
In preparation for increasing visitor sizes and ongoing wildfires, some businesses are thinking about changing their operations, which see outdoor recreation(娱乐) as a tourism opportunity. A nonprofit travel agency is considering creating a questionnaire(调查问卷) for customers to show when they would cancel a booking because of road closes from the wildfires, poor air quality and a lack of visibility.
Tourism in British Columbia contributes(贡献) greatly to its economy. The province has various recreational offerings, from the major ski destinations to hiking along the coast. Blackcomb, a helicopter tour company, has canceled its sightseeing offerings, using most of its helicopters on the firefighting effort until at least early August.“ It's the question of flying our customers around on sightseeing tours or putting out fires within 10 kilometers of our bases and the communities that we live in,” said Jordy Norris, the company's tourism director. “We made it clear to both our staff and our customers that we have a duty to protect the backyard.”
Darrin Rigo , a photographer, recently saw a photo of a beautiful waterfall engulfed in fire on a media page. “I'm sure that's not going to last long, and everything will turn to normal.” he said.
28. Which part of Canada is most affected by the wildfire
A. The northern areas. B. Canada's central part.
C. Major Canadian cities. D. Places with few visitors.
29. What can be inferred about Jordy Norris

For those who believe that remote(远程的) work is more productive than in the office, research shows that offices remain important. A paper found a 4% drop in the number of calls handled per hour by employees of an online business that had changed from offices to homes. Not only did employees answer fewer calls when remote, the quality of their interactions suffered. They put customers on hold for longer. More also phoned back, an indication of unsolved problems.
Those working at home were 18% less productive than their peers in the office. Another study determined that even chess professionals play less well in online matches than face-to-face. Yet another used a laboratory experiment to show that video conferences affect creative thinking.
The reasons for the findings won't surprise anyone who has worked from a dining-room table. It is harder for people to collaborate from home. Workers spoke of missing their “neighbours” to turn to for assistance. Some of the co-ordination(协调) costs of remote work might reasonably be expected to fall as people get used to it. But another cost may rise over time: the underdevelopment of human capital. In a study of software engineers, researchers found that feedback exchanged between colleagues dropped sharply after the move to remote work. There is more to work than productivity. Perhaps the greatest virtue of remote work is that it leads to happier employees. People can more easily fit in school pickups and doctor appointments, not to mention the occasional lie-in or mid-morning jog. And some tasks can often be done more smoothly from home than in open offices, especially those requiring unbroken concentration for long periods. All this explains why so many workers have become so office-shy.
Indeed, several surveys have found employees are willing to accept pay cuts for the option of working from home. Having satisfied employees on slightly lower pay might be a good deal for corporate managers. Nevertheless, the balance of the work week is likely to be back to the office, because better productivity lies in that direction.
32. What did a paper find about the online business
A. Employees are kept at work longer. B. Employees have quality interactions.
C. Work productivity doesn't improve. D. Most hard problems are solved.
33. What did some remote workers miss about office work
A. They can ask colleagues for help. B. They can discuss things at dinner.
C. They have no co-ordination cost. D. They have high spirits in the office.
34. What do we learn about remote work from the last paragraph
A. It helps workers to fit in with society.
B. It represents the workplace situation.
C. It results in employees’ better productivity.
D. It may come with pay cuts for employees.
35. In which part of a newspaper can the text most likely be found
A. Technology. B. Life.
C. Education. D. Environment.

On Monday,2023, people across Kenya took part in the country's first national tree-planting holiday. The holiday was created by Kenya's president to encourage people to plant trees as part of a plan to fight the climate crisis.
Kenya is famous for its beautiful forests and wildlife. But large areas of Kenya's forests have been cut down. Those trees would normally help absorb carbon dioxide. 36
Currently, just 7% of Kenya is covered by trees. Kenya has been seriously affected by the climate crisis. The country has been hit by a severe drought, and the area's rain patterns have been changing for the worse.
An app is created to help organize the tree planting. 37 It helps people collect seedlings, find places to plant, and record their efforts. The app will also help the government track how many trees have been planted in different areas around the country.
On Monday, people all over Kenya turned out in large numbers to take part in the holiday. In the capital, Nairobi, hundreds of people joined in, even though it was raining. 38 But the government had a goal of planting several hundred million more before the end of December.
39 But some people were upset because the holiday was announced too late for them to be able to take part. Still others have criticized the government for a decision made earlier this year to end a ba n on cutting down older trees. 40 Some hope that it will happen every year.
A. Most Kenyans supported the event.
B. It's not yet clear how many trees were planted.
C. It's a greenhouse gas that causes the climate crisis.
D. Even so, people were very excited about the holiday.
E. The app is called JazaMiti, meaning “filling with trees”.
F. Government leaders led planting efforts all over the country.
G. To prepare for the day, the government got young trees ready.

My family always had the basics, but there was little money for much else beyond food and shelter. Everyone in our small town lived the same way. That is why I was pleasantly surprised when my mother came up with the money to ask someone to take a picture for my fourth-grade class. Twenty-two students lined up in three rows and faced the camera with smiles. My teacher Mrs. Cornell stood to the side.
Schoolwork was never a burden for me. Even when I was sick, I still wanted to go to school. As the years passed, I would see that fourth-grade picture from time to time. It always reminded me that I had wanted to become a teacher. Later, I got married and my focus was on building a family. Every so often I would feel that longing for the teaching career I never got to have.
Once my children were in school, I had some time to myself. The thirst to teach was still there. It would mean going back to college. But I was now forty-two years old. I had not been a student for over twenty years. Were there any brain cells left after raising three children Having only my husband's income made money a problem as well.
After much mental struggle I managed to come up with enough money for my first semester, a total of nine hours, but I had no idea how I would pay for anything beyond that. With a step of faith, I moved forward. Standing in line with baby-faced teenagers to register for classes, I questioned my ability to do it all. But here I was, deciding on British Literature as my major.

The price was very reasonable, but she insisted on giving it to me for free. This was a beautiful moment, especially when I felt sad. In a few days I would have an operation for my disease. One possible version:
College proved to be a pleasure but a challenge. I was back in school, attending classes and challenging myself to learn new things. My days and nights were spent reading and rereading difficult textbooks and studying essays on classic English literature. And I buried myself in the sea of readings that my professor had assigned. I watched as kids half my age got excellent test grades while I studied for hours to make a passing grade. Gradually, I found myself starting to relax and enjoy the classes, and began to stand out.
One day two years later, my professor called to tell me that I was given a teaching job in the local primary school. I hung up the phone with teary eyes. I couldn't believe that my dream to teach was becoming a reality. My faith had been rewarded. For the next eighteen years, I worked diligently. I began each school year by telling the students about myself. I told them the story of how I had wanted to be a teacher all my life; it just took me a while to get there. It's my desire that my students will realize their dream with my teaching and guidance.
