That day when Dora returned home, she told her mother about Alice’s bird. Then she asked, “Mom, can I also get a bird ” “Of course, you can,” said her mother. “But you need to wait because I’ve no time to visit a pet store these days.” Dora agreed. One day, when Dora was back home from school, she saw a cage in the living room. In the cage was a beautiful blue bird. Her mother was standing next to the cage, smiling. “Oh, a bird!” Dora shouted happily. She ran to it and looked at it happily. “It’s a birthday gift for you,” said her mother “Thank you, Mom. I
love it so much!” said Dora excitedly.
The following day, Dora invited her friends to come over to see her bird. All of her friends said it was a really beautiful bird and Dora was very glad to hear that. She and her friends played with the bird for a long time that day.
Her friends all wished they could have such a bird as their pet.
Sadly, a few weeks later, Dora became sick. The doctor told her parents that she got the flu and had to say at home. In order not to make her friends sick, her parents asked her friends not to come to play with her. Dora felt very sad. How she wished her friends would come and visit her! ALEX pedaled his bike along the country lane that led to his house. As he rounded a bend, the tips of the cattails that grew around Johnson’s Pond came into view. His dad took him canoeing there sometimes, and Alex loved it. The pond was always so alive with activity. Frogs croaked along the shore, dragonflies hunted among the
cattails, and sometimes Alex discovered turtles(乌龟) basking(晒太阳) on sunny rocks.
Alex was curious about the turtles he saw. One week, when it was too rainy to go canoeing, he and his dad went to the library to check out books on turtles. Alex learned that turtles don’t have warm blood like people do. That’s why they have to sit in the sun to warm themselves. Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny
day. He decided he would ask Dad if they could go canoeing and look for turtles again.
Just then Alex saw something in the road up ahead. It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for
a rock to be.
And then, as Alex watched, the rock started to move.
When he rode his bike up to get a closer look, he saw that it wasn’t a rock at all. It was a large turtle crawled
its way across the road. It had a bony, beak-shaped mouth and a long, jagged tail. Alex knew right away it was a
snapping turtle.
He also knew not to get too close. He had read that a snapping turtle has a powerful bite even though it doesn’t have teeth. It could even bite off someone’s finger. He stood at a distance and watched the turtle move slowly over
the road.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a car approaching. The turtle was still only halfway across the road. Alex
knew he couldn’t pick it up to move it safely to the grass. What could he do

The Biggest Dog on the Mountain
We liked hiking together. Today, we were looking for a trail over Wallace Mountain.
”It’s been over an hour,” said Jessc, my nineteen-year-old son. “Do you think the trail still exists ” We had explored several paths but with no luck. We pushed through weeds mid-calf high for us, but neck-high for our rusty-brown dog, Shadow. Once in a while, we would call Shadow back when she was attracted by the pleasant smell of flowers. No longer slim and bouncing with energy, Shadow was the size of a large house cat, and always
content to curl up on the couch beside one of us.
Suddenly, we heard what sounded like many dogs barking in the distance, an unusual sound in the wilderness
around us. Curious, we climbed the ridge (山脉), only to find what seemed like a dog factory. Small dogs, big dogs, brown dogs, and dogs I can’t even describe poured out. The hounds ( 猎狗) hit the ground, sniffing the air and turning to face us. Before long, they went down from their side of the mountain. Jesse shot an alarmed glance at me
before turning to call in a firm voice, “Shadow, come here, stay.”
I patted my pockets, feeling for the pepper spray (防狼喷雾), so small it would never work against so many animals. I turned, surveying the nearby brush for a potential weapon. With the help of adrenaline ( 肾上腺素), I broke off two thick branches from a tree and rushed to Jesse’s side, “Here you are!” “OK,” he said, “Dad, they are
coming to us.” My-mouth went dry. I glanced over at Jesse, his lips pinched (夹紧) tight.
The pack emerged from the valley, marching straight toward us. The dogs in the lead were now close enough for us to see that most of them were three times larger than Shadow. With deep growls (怒吼声) ,they ran straight
for us. Jesse swallowed hard and looked at me.

My husband, Donald, took our daughter Sarah out for some ice cream the night before driving her to college.
As they were walking back to the car, they saw a young man sitting on the ground and giving his puppy a cone.
“A cute dog,” Donald said as they walked by. “A free dog,” the young man replied. Donald asked him what he meant by that and the man explained. He was moving away from Vermont and did not think the travel would be good for the dog. He had raised her from a small puppy. The man said she was a 6-month-old cross between the
Doberman and the Labrador named Rhubarb. Donald took his phone number. The rest, as they say, is history.
Rhubarb was a sweet dog and very friendly and loved everyone. Whenever someone came to the house, she was always happy. She also got along with Willie, an older Samoyed we had. Willie was not well and died about a year later, but, fortunately, Rhubarb’s company helped him keep going for longer than that if he had been alone. But the interesting thing about Rhubarb was that she never barked. She would sometimes get excited when she saw
a chipmunk (花栗鼠) and make a little crying sound.
One hot night when she was about 4 years old, we went to bed with the windows open and the doors unlocked.
At about 3 a.m., I woke up to the sound of Rhubarb barking. I woke Donald and we got out of bed.
Rhubarb was coming toward us. We turned on the lights and noticed the door to the kitchen was open. Then we saw the door leading into the house from the garage was also open. We quickly locked all the doors, and we did
not get any sleep that night. It was deep into the night, so we didn’t call the police.

We spent the whole weekend watching the ospreys as they flew around gracefully and fished in the pools, and
we were very glad a week later when the Easter holidays started.
We spent every day there, cycling out while it was still dark, making notes, doing drawings. taking
photographs, recording the birds' activities, and soon we realized that they were starting to make a nest.
We decided that it would be better to keep the whole thing a secret because we knew there were lots of egg collectors who would like to have an osprey's egg in their collection, even though it was illegal. So we said nothing
to the few people we met there-the occasional fisherman or walker.
But one evening when we got back from a day watching our ospreys, my parents asked lots of questions about
what we were doing.
“Shall we tell them, Mike ” I asked.
“Well, we'll need them to promise not to tell anyone,” he answered, only half joking.
So we told them all about it and they were very impressed.
The holidays ended. By then the ospreys had finished building their nest at the top of one pine tree on the island in the middle of Big Pool. Of course we still went to watch them every weekend, and a couple of nights after
school.
One Saturday we were surprised to find a white van parked on the roadside near the track, and a middle-aged
man looking at us. As we approached he said, “Aha, and here come our two bird experts!”
Mike and I exchanged glances that were both puzzled and worried. “Don and Mike, I guess. I'm Mr Roberts. Well, whichever of you is Don...,” here I nodded, “I have to thank your father for telling me about your splendid
find. I'll just wander around and see what I can see. Pleased to meet you.” Then he turned and started to walk
around the lake.

Sara Savick remembers one special Easter when she was nine years old. Her parents gave her a baby duckling
in a yellow basket.
“Mom said later that she bought the little duck because she felt sorry for it,” recalled Sara. The people at the
pet store colored the feathers pink for Easter. Sara named the duck Pinky.
Sara’s mother really didn’t think the baby duck would survive very long. But to her surprise, Pinky grew and
got stronger and stronger. Soon, the little duckling was a healthy, hungry duck with white feathers.
“We fed Pinky oatmeal, cooked and uncooked, and small pieces of vegetables,” said Sara. Pinky lived inside the house with Sara and her family. She specially fancied taking baths with Sara. Everyone treated Pinky as a
family member.
But just when everything appeared to be perfect, the night of the “talk” came. Sara’s Mom and Dad sat her down, explaining that the best thing for Pinky was to live a normal duck life, with other ducks. It was not natural for ducks to live indoors with a family, her father told her. He added Pinky needed to swim in ponds and do all the
same things that ducks in the wild do.
Sara started to cry, knowing what was going to happen. Sara’s parents decided to take Pinky to a park, which was two miles away. There was a pond with a lot of other ducks. Pinky would have the chance to live a natural life
and Sara could still visit her.
The big day came, Sara and her parents put Pinky in a box and drove to the park. Sara said that Pinky did not
look happy; maybe Pinky was convinced that she was a human, not a duck.

It seemed like it had only been a few years ago that Indigo had first rushed through our door. Her underbelly showed the signs of the litter she’d recently delivered. She had a nose for trouble. On one occasion, I had come home to find that she’d eaten a five-pound bag of flour. She was covered in white powder, and flour paw prints were everywhere, including, incredibly, on the countertops(台板). I asked the dog what the hell had happened, and
Indigo just looked at me with a glance that said, I cannot imagine what you are referring to.
Time raced by. Our children grew up and went off to university. The mirror, which had reflected a young mum when Indigo first arrived, now showed a woman in late middle age. I had surgery for cataracts(白内障). I began to
lose my hearing. We all turned grey: me, my spouse(配偶), the dog.
In August 2017, I took Indigo for one last walk. She was slow and unsteady on her paws. She looked up at me sadly. You did say you’d take care of me when the time came, she said. You promised, Jenny. She died that month, a tennis ball by her side. I’d owned a succession of dogs since 1964, each one of them a witness to a particular stage of my life. But with the loss of Indigo, all that was over. The days of my dogs, I now understood, were done
at last.
But one morning, as I was passing the Bed ’n’ Biscuit in my car, somehow I pulled over. I could at least lay
eyes upon one cute dog, a tiny sweet thing. What harm could it do She had a soft face.
Not long after, I got a call from the Bed ’n’ Biscuit, our dog daycare( 日托所). One of their customers was leaving, and her dog which was the one I saw that morning, Chloe, needed a home. Given our recent loss, they
asked, might our family be interested in adopting her

It was a hot and wet day in late summer. I was a young dad working in a local wood factory. It was dangerous,
back-breaking work that paid very little.
In the year I had worked there, only four other people hadn’t quit and been replaced with new faces. Those of
us who stayed did so only because there was no other work to find to support our families.
One day the electric fans weren’t working and all of us were covered in sweat and sawdust . When I looked around every face, they looked angry and frustrated. Suddenly, a voice called out: “Hey! There’s a deer in here. A lost little deer had wandered through the open loading bay doors and was now hiding in fear in between the huge
piles of wood. All of us stopped working and went looking for her as she ran about crazily looking for a way out.
Now most people where I live hunt deer for meat in the fall but treat them with great kindness the rest of the year. Many will even buy bags of corn to help feed them during the cold winter months. It was no surprise then that all of us were soon quickly working together to free this little deer. By blocking off all the other routes, we were
able to guide her crazy search back to the open bay doors.
We watched as she jumped out of the building and back into the woods. Then we walked back in to work. I
noticed something, though. On every face, there was a joyful smile. It seemed as if this one single act of kindness
had energized us again and reminded us of what life was all about.

One Saturday afternoon, I was watching TV in the living room with my grandpa when a blinding flash of lightning flashed across the sky, followed by a deafening sound, and the pictures on TV disappeared with that sound. Before I realized what had happened, a gray-white shadow rushed in through the open window and flew over my head. Bang! It hit the wall and slid off to the floor. Shaking with fear, I approached it cautiously and saw that it was a pigeon. It looked at me in fear, trying to open its wings and struggling its feet, but apparently
powerless.
So I called my grandpa and immediately set out to give it a helping hand. Taking it in my hands, I felt a few drops of warmth on my hands. It was blood! I gently spread its wings and there were a few red feathers inside. “Don’t worry. We’ll get it out alive,” Grandpa said to me. Then he got the first-aid kit. With some cotton, we dried the blood, cleaned the wound and then put it under a hairdryer to dry. All went smoothly, for the pigeon had no strength left to resist. There happened to be an empty birdcage at home, so I put it in gently and added a little water
and some grains.
For the next few days, the moment I got home from school, I would run to feed the pigeon. And Grandpa helped a lot, tidying up the cage daily. Little by little, its strength returned. One evening, I fed it with the biscuit I was eating. It enjoyed it! One week later, its wound almost healed (痊愈); its feathers grew and it became brave. Whenever I sat at the table eating biscuits, it looked up at me, cooing (咕咕地叫) constantly. To my joy, I could
also reach into the cage to touch it. When I gently fingered its head, it playfully pecked ( 啄) at me. Finally it
completely recovered. But every time I was with it, it seemed restless in the cage. To make it happy and pretty, I
tied an orange string (线)around its leg.

ALEX pedaled his bike along the country lane that led to his house. As he rounded a bend, the tips of the
cattails that grew around Johnson’s Pond came into view. His dad took him canoeing there sometimes, and Alex
loved it.
It was a large turtle crawled its way across the road.

Thinking fast, he started jumping up and down and waving both hands wildly. “Stop! Stop!” he cried. The car
slowed to a stop, and the driver stuck his head out of the window with a puzzled look. Alex darted forward and
pointed at the moving turtle. “I’m just trying to save it.” he explained. With an understanding smile, the driver
applauded his efforts. Seeing the car pulling away, Alex was lost in deep thoughts. “Maybe I could put up a sign to
warn people there were turtles crossing the road,” he said to himself.
To make the sign, Alex hurried back home and found some leftover wood and paint. He hammered nails into
the wood to make a flat board, after which he painted a vivid picture of a turtle in the middle and added “Slow!
Turtles Crossing” at the bottom. He had completed all his work when Dad arrived home, who offered to carry the sign to the spot. Together they fixed the sign into the ground by the side of the road. With their work done, they
both breathed a sigh of relief and headed home with great satisfaction.

Suddenly, we heard what sounded like many dogs barking in the distance, an unusual sound in the wilderness around us.
The dogs in the lead were now close enough
for us to see that most of them were three times larger than Shadow.

Sara said that Pinky did not
look happy; maybe Pinky was convinced that she was a human, not a duck.

home to find that she’d eaten a five-pound bag of flour.
One of their customers was
leaving, and her dog which was the one I saw that morning, Chloe, needed a home. Given our recent loss, they
asked, might our family be interested in adopting her

【答案】
Itold them that we were sorry but we wouldn’t be adopting any more dogs. With Indigo, our baby dog passing
away, our house seemed quiet as a tomb, messy and lifeless. The loss of Indigo seemed to deprive me of my love
for any cute and lovely dog. What if I suffer the loss again Out of nowhere, the dog kept flashing through my mind
and I was enchanted by that tiny sweet thing. Once again, I set off to the Bed ’n’ Biscuit and adopted that tiny
sweet thing named Chloe, fearful but delighted.
When Chloe entered our house, she was cautious, uncertain. Every time we hugged her, she stepped back a little, her eyes filled with anxiety as well as curiosity. With days going by, our passion drove her forward and she
was willing to embrace us enthusiastically. Every time we returned home from work, happy kisses from Chloe
would rain upon our faces and the house would immediately be turned into a sea of happiness. Fortunately, with
Chloe’s company, our life was refreshed as if our Indigo were still here with us.

To my joy, I could also reach into the cage to touch it. When I gently fingered its head, it playfully pecked ( 啄) at me. Finally it
completely recovered. But every time I was with it, it seemed restless in the cage. To make it happy and pretty, I
tied an orange string (线)around its leg.
