On a cold February morning, a short woman with a violin case stood at an entrance to the subway station in Time Square. She opened the case, got out her violin and started to play. She played seven pieces for about 52 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, 1, 200 people went through the station, most of whom were on their way to work.
Four minutes later, a middle-aged man noticed there was a musician playing. A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to her. They stopped for a few seconds, and then hurried up to meet their schedule.
The one who paid the most attention was a 3-year-old boy. His mother followed him along, hurriedly, but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally, the mother pushed hard, and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This was repeated by several other children. Al the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.
In the 52 minutes the musician played, only 5 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 18 gave her money, but continued to walk their normal pace. She collected $34. When she finished playing and silently left, no one noticed it. No one clapped, nor was there any recognition.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Ronya Bell, one of the musical geniuses in the world. She had just played one of the most beautiful pieces ever written, on a violin worth 4 million dollars.
Two days before her playing in the subway, the tickets to her performance were sold out at a theatre in Chicago where the seats averaged $150.
This is a real story. Ronya Bell’s playing at the subway station was organized as part of a social experiment.

Why do we find ugly-cute animals so attractive And what makes odd-looking creatures so cute
Evolution (进化) plays a role. According to Austrian zoologist Erin Fekete, human attraction to childish features, such as big eyes, large heads and soft bodies, is an evolutionary adaptation that helps ensure that adults care for the young, assuring the survival of their species. Odd-looking animals such as blobfish, pugs, aye-ayes and bulldogs all share these childish qualities that cause a loving response among humans and a nature to raise and protect. And these childish characteristics increase a person’s “protective behavior, attention and willingness” to care for the individual and reduce the “possibility of aggression towards a child”, says Cyril Drouet, a researcher.
Ugly-cute animals often have other value— some, like the blobfish, live in extreme environments that they have adapted to in remarkable ways. Scientists are keen to study these animals to understand whether their biology might provide fresh ideas that could lead to treatments for human health conditions such as cancer and heart disease.
But while many ugly creatures are strongly adapted to their life in the wild and can provide numerous benefits to the ecosystems they live in, they often still don’t get as much attention as more traditionally cute and beautiful animals, which leads to many of the ugly-cute species being ignored in terms of research.
There are other culture-led factors that also cause our attraction for ugly-cute animals. “The ugly-cute thing is very fashionable.” says Rowena Packer, a lecturer of animal behavior. “This is partly caused by social media, with many social media influencers showing off pet pugs and French bulldogs on Instagram.” she says.
But there are some serious worries around this trend. Veterinarians (兽医) are calling on people not to keep a flat-faced dog, because they suffer from serious health problems. Pugs and French bulldogs which have been selectively kept experience breathing difficulties, repeated skin problems and eye diseases. So while childish features such as big eyes may make us smile, we might want to reconsider our attraction for “ugly-cute” pets.
8. What does the underlined word “aggression” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Threatening behavior. B. Strange behavior. C. Friendly behavior. D. Smart behavior.
9. Why are some ugly animals overlooked in terms of research
A. They are of no interest to scientists. B. They are less cute and attractive.
C. They do not have unique biological feature. D. They are not well-adapted to their environments.
10. What can be inferred about the role of social media in promoting the popularity of ugly-cute animals
A. Influencers have started a campaign to raise awareness about ugly animals.
B. People prefer to post pictures of ugly animals on social media rather than cute animals.
C. Social media didn’t make it easier to spread information about animals.
D. The ugly-cute animals shared on social media could raise people’s attraction for them.
11. How does the author feel about the current trend of keeping flat-faced dogs
A. Encouraging. B. Indifferent. C. Concerned. D. Excited.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. B 11. C
【解析】

【8题详解】

【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“But while many ugly creatures are strongly adapted to their life in the wild and can provide numerous benefits to the ecosystems they live in, they often still don’t get as much attention as more traditionally cute and beautiful animals, which leads to many of the ugly-cute species being ignored in terms of research.(但是,尽管许多丑陋的生物强烈地适应了它们在野外的生活,并且可以为它们所生活的生态系统提供许多好处,但它们通常仍然没有像传统的可爱和美丽的动物那样受到那么多的关注,这导致许多丑陋的物种在研究方面被忽视了)”可知,一些丑陋的动物在研究中被忽视了因为它们不那么可爱和吸引人。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“The ugly-cute thing is very fashionable.(这种又丑又可爱的东西很流行)”以及“This is partly caused by social media, with many social media influencers showing off pet pugs and French bulldogs on Instagram.(这在一定程度上是由社交媒体造成的,许多社交媒体上有影响力的人在Instagram上展示宠物哈巴狗和法国斗牛犬)”可推知,人们更喜欢在社交媒体上发布丑陋动物的照片,而不是可爱动物的照片。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“But there are some serious worries around this trend. Veterinarians (兽医) are calling on people not to keep a flat-faced dog, because they suffer from serious health problems.(但围绕这一趋势也存在一些严重的担忧。兽医们呼吁人们不要养扁脸狗,因为它们有严重的健康问题。)”可推知,作者对目前养平脸狗的趋势持担忧态度。故选C。

Oxford Dictionaries’ word of the year for 2022 was “goblin mode”: a kind of behavior mode, which means a crazy self-enjoyment, typically in a way that rejects social customs or regulations. If we all got fascinated by making our home comfort and beautiful, it feels like last year was the year we gave up: Welcoming the mess and the chaos in daily life.
Orgamzed mess has been in fashion for a while after the coming of the term “cluttercore”: the art of having masses of stuff in one’s home and embracing (拥抱) color and noise. Think messy maximalism: Chaos, but lovely designed chaos.
Clean spaces don’t lead a man to innovation and creation. This is the reason why so many geniuses do their work in cluttered surroundings. They don’t see the mess — they see possibility. Ever known the type of person to store crayons in the microwave and books in the washing machine That’s probably because they are more creative in disorder. Staying messy builds the connections which lead them to new and creative ideas. They believe that messes offer new approaches to seeing the world. So don’t get worried about being messy. That just might spark your next genius invention.
Messy people have their own unique ways of keeping organized. You wouldn’t know from looking at their piles of stuff, but they know exactly what’s in them and how to find what they’re looking for every time. These piles are, in their eyes, well-organized and everything is easy to get. Painters, writers, musicians and creators throughout history have often worked in disorder. They have their unique way to place their objects and that is what they like.
12. What does the writer mean in the first paragraph
A. Ignoring social customs or regulations. B. Learning to enjoy life by oneself.
C. Being positive to a life of mess and chaos. D. Introducing the word for 2022.
13. What do we know about “organized mess”
A. It is an art of mess lovely displayed. B. It is an art of placing everything in order.
C. It comes before the word “cluttercore”. D. It is hated by geniuses.
14. What does the underlined word “possibility” refer to
A. The possibility of being a talent. B. The possibility of being a messy man.
C. The possibility of getting inspiration. D. The possibility of being clean.
15. Why does the author mention the painters, writers, musicians and creators in the last paragraph
A. To prove that artists all love mess and chaos.
B. To show they have a good memory.
C. To present their messy side.
D. To offer examples of messy people’s unique way of being organized.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. C 15. D

【15题详解】

The Students’ Union
【答案】Dear students,
As everybody can see in our school, many students don’t have good behavior. They don’t get up early and are often late for school. They throw rubbish and park their bicycles anywhere as they like. What’s worse, they don’t behave according to the etiquette rules. I think it’s high time that we should develop good behavior habits when we’re studying at school. For one thing, good habits have a key effect on our characters, which will determine our fortune. For another thing, good habits are symbols of Chinese traditional virtues, which were responsible to spread to the world.
Dear friends, if we take action to change our behavior right away, we can make a big difference in the future.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Iceland is a coastal country, where much of its land is below sea level. Dikes (堤坝) are great walls that stop the sea from rushing in and flooding the country. For many centuries the people of Iceland have worked to keep the walls strong to keep their country safe. Even little children there are quite aware that a small hole in the walls can cause great damage to the country. There was a boy who was named Paul.
His father was one of the men who would open and close the gates in the dikes for the ships to pass out of the Iceland’s canals into the great sea.
One cold afternoon when Paul was eight years old, his mother asked him to deliver some cakes she baked to his blind friend who lived across the dike. Paul stayed with him for a while, shared his experience of the walk and described the sun, the flowers, and the ships far out in the sea. Then he found it was dark totally. So he said goodbye to his friend and set out for home immediately. On his way back, as he walked beside the canal, he noticed that the water had risen a lot because of rain and it was beating against the dike violently.
As Paul was walking along, he suddenly heard a noise of trickling (滴流的) water. He stopped and saw a small hole in the dike through which a tiny stream was flowing. Paul knew the danger that could be caused as the little hole would soon become a larger one and the whole country could be flooded. So he climbed down the side of the dike and put his finger into the tiny hole. The flowing of the water stopped in no time.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文
Paul shouted for help, but in vain (徒劳). Because it was dark and cold, there was no one around who could hear him calling out for help. Gradually, Paul’s arms ached and became numb. Even so, he didn’t remove his finger from the hole. He tried to whistle to encourage himself, but he couldn’t because he was trembling with cold. He thought about his brothers and sisters who must be sleeping in their warm beds and also of his father and mother who must believe he was staying with his blind friend for the night. He thought he would never be able to see them again. A little sad, he fell asleep in the end.
Early the next morning, a man going for work heard Paul’s groan (呻吟) . He found Paul was holding firmly to the side of the great wall. He came down to Paul’s side. Gathering all his strength, Paul informed him about the hole in a very low voice. Soon the alarm was spread and people came running to mend the hole. They also wrapped Paul with a thick blanket and sent him to hospital. All the people praised Paul for his bravery as he saved the whole country from drowning that night.

One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing
4. Why did few people stop to listen to Ronya Bell playing
A. The performance was not good enough. B. They were not interested in music.
C. It was too cold in the subway. D. People were in a hurry.
5. What did the parents do when their children stopped to look at the violinist
A. They would applaud for the performance. B. They would urge them to continue walking.
C. They would stop to enjoy the music. D. They would give her some money.
6. Why did Ronya Bell play at the entrance to the subway station
A. To find out people’s reaction under such circumstances.
B. To practise her skills in playing music in public.
C. To make an advertisement for her future concert in Chicago.
D. To make more money.
7. What is the purpose of the passage
A. To tell us the importance of enjoying music. B. To show us how to play music.
C. To make us think about our fast-paced life. D. To report a unique subway performance.

Veterinarians (兽医) are calling on people not to keep a flat-faced dog because they suffer from serious health problems.
C. Concerned. D. Excited.
D
Oxford Dictionaries’ word of the year for 2022 was “goblin mode”: a kind of behavior mode, which means a crazy self-enjoyment, typically in a way that rejects social customs or regulations. If we all got fascinated by making our home comfort and beautiful, it feels like last year was the year we gave up: Welcoming the mess and the chaos in daily life.
Orgamzed mess has been in fashion for a while, after the coming of the term “cluttercore”: the art of having masses of stuff in one’s home and embracing (拥抱) color and noise.

As Paul was walking along, he suddenly heard a noise of trickling (滴流) water.
