Being yourself is one important thing you have to remember when going to senior high school. It means that you had better learn to manage your time wisely.

And taking part in some outdoor activities will also help to make your senior high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
Bill, Aged 15
When I began senior high school I was really nervous, especially since I had been taught at home all through junior high school. I think the best advice is that you should relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.

At most schools in the U. S., it’s customary to have a cheer squad (啦啦队) to support athletics. Cheerleaders drum up excitement before games, put on jaw—dropping routines at games, and provide support on the sidelines of most events. But students who participate in performing and visual arts seldom receive the same displays of support as athletes do. A group of students at Mountain View High School in Orem, Utah, decided to change that fact by creating a cheer squad just for the arts.
Their school’s athletics cheer squad is called the Bruin Crazies, so they named their artistic cheer squad the Bruin Classies! This is a new brand with which they could create something for all of the arts, whether it is band, dance show, photography and art galleries—to give them some publicity and cheer them on.
Classies wear a “uniform” of bow ties to indicate the “sense of class”artistic efforts bring their school. They carry around signs to advertise the upcoming play, musical, or dance performance. Hoping to drum up ticket sales, they encourage their fellow students to come out to support the hard work of others. They also attend performances and displays at school to cheer their classmates on.
After years of discussion to make a cheer squad for the arts, this is the first time they’ve been able to pull it off. More than 90 students have already signed up to be a Bruin Classy! “The students have poured their time and energy into their arts, and it is worthy to be celebrated. ”Caleb Stay, the cheer squad leader, said, “If you worked really hard on something and no one showed up, it would be disappointing. We just want to make sure that no one feels that way. ”
This is such an amazing idea! We can’t believe no one has come up with it before, but hopefully these thoughtful teens have started a new trend to support the arts in other schools, too.
4. Why did the students in Mountain View high school set up the Bruin Classies
A. To support the arts in their schoo1. B. To compete with the Bruin Crazies.

5. How do Classies make the art performances appealing to students at school
A. By offering free tickets to students.
B By popularizing the art performances.
C. By inviting students to attend performances.
D. By wearing a special uniform for art festivals.
6. What can be inferred from Caleb Stay’s words
A. More students will sign up the Bruin Classy.
B. Few students like to attend the art performance.

D. The students’artistic efforts deserve to be admired.

Students from Taizhou Middle School, Jiangsu Province, experience farming during their labor course. As we all know, the life skills like cooking and painting are important and should be taught as part of labor education.
On June 3, 2020, the Ministry of Education ( MOE) gave a document showing the revised curriculum (修改后的方案) for senior high schools across the country. Labor education includes housework, school labor and community voluntary services and so on.
“Labor education must be carried out with the purpose to make the right view of the world, life and values and develop an interest in doing chores,” said Vice-Minister of Education Zheng Fuzhi.
According to China Youth Daily, the labor course will take six credits (学分)—the same as foreign language and physics. Voluntary service, as part of labor education, would take two credits. The MOE also asks schools to make sure 40 hours of voluntary service during the full three school years.
According to Xinhua, adding labor education was out of care that the country’s young people do too little housework and that they think labor jobs aren’t important. Because of a lot of school pressure, schools pay more attention to the course of education, and parents may think that the chores waste their kids’ time.
According to a survey, middle school students in China only spend 12 minutes a day on chores, compared with 72 minutes in the US, 42 minutes in South Korea and 30 minutes in France.

“Why do people enjoy saying that they are bad at math ” wonders Petra Bonfert, a professor of engineering at Dartmouth College. After seeing too many examples of adults “passing on mathematical anxiety like a virus,” Bonfert has an important message for math-phobic parents and educators: “We are passing on from generation to generation the fear for mathematics.”
Many people hold the view that math is inherently hard, and only people with an inborn mathematical ability can understand it. While well-meaning adults may think they’re encouraging kids by sharing their own math fears, research has shown the opposite. Research has found that the problem is particularly significant for girls, who “are especially affected when a teacher publicly announces math hatred before she picks up the chalk.” Moreover, a study published recently reported that female mathematical achievement was diminished in response to a female teacher’s mathematical anxiety. The effect was correlated: the higher a teacher’s anxiety, the lower the scores.”
Parents’ anxiety about math can have a similar effect on kids’ achievement and their attitude toward the subject. Children who received math homework help from mathematically fearful parents showed weaker math achievements than their peers, which in turn resulted in increased math anxiety for the children themselves. New research on math anxiety confirms that these parents unintentionally teach kids to expect that math will be beyond their capabilities.
Fortunately, Sian Beilock, a cognitive scientist of Barnard College, has found a surprisingly easy way for parents to stop passing on math anxiety and build their children’s math confidence. The most important finding is the importance of normalizing math at home in a way that’s relaxing and playful: from using math-themed books and stories, playing with math games and toys to cooking together. He argues that we need to teach kids that “working on mathematical skills is not unlike practicing a sport. Neither can be learned by watching others perform the activity and both require encouragement and effort. You do not need an inborn mathematical ability in order to solve mathematical problems. Rather, what is required is perseverance, a willingness to take risks and feeling safe to make mistakes.
12. Why do some people share their math fear with kids
A. To expect kids to learn from their mistake. B. To prove only geniuses can learn it well.
C. To give encouragement to their kids. D. To stress the importance of genetic factors.
13. What does the underlined word “diminished” mean
A. Decreased. B. Measured. C. Improved. D. Influenced.
14. What can be learned from the last paragraph
A. Normalizing maths at home is relaxing and full of fun.
B. Having an inborn math ability is essential to children.
C. Developing mathematical skills differs from doing a sport.
D. Encouragement and efforts help yield math learning success.
15. What’s the main idea of the text
A. Math-phobic adults are to blame for math failure.
B. Math anxiety is nothing to be afraid of at all.
C. Parents and teachers pass on math fear to kids.
D. Risks and mistakes are what success takes.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. C

A 12-year-old boy saw something in a shop window that set his heart racing. It was a jewel box. But the price—five dollars—was far beyond Reuben Earle’s means. However, he opened the door and went inside. Standing proud and straight, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time ”
“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled.
“I will raise the five dollars and not tell anybody,” Reuben said to himself.
Hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben had an idea. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails purchased in sacks (麻布袋) from a local factory. Sometimes the sacks were abandoned, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he found two sacks and sold to the man in charge of packing nails.
The boy’s hand tightly held the five-cent pieces as he ran home. Near his house stood the ancient barn (谷仓). Reuben found a soda tin and dropped his coins inside. Then he climbed into the top of the barn and hid the tin.
All summer long, despite housework at home Reuben kept to his secret task. Often he was cold, tired and hungry, but the thought of the object in the shop window sustained him.
Mother’s Day had come! He uncovered the tin can, poured the coins out and began to count. He needed 20 cents more. He had to find four more sacks and sell them before the day ended.
Towards evening Reuben arrived at the factory. The sack buyer was about to lock up.
“Mister! Please don’t close up yet.”
The man turned and saw Reuben, dirty and sweat stained.
“Come back tomorrow, boy.”
“Please, Mister. I have to sell the sacks now — please.”

【答案】The man heard a slight shake in Reuben’s voice and could tell he was close to tears. “Why do you need this money so badly ” “It’s a secret.” The man took the sacks, reached into his pocket and put four coins in Reuben’s hand. Reuben murmured a thank you and ran home. Then, holding the tin can in his hand, he headed for the shop. “I have the money.” he told the owner proudly. The man went to the window and fetched Reuben’s treasure. He wiped the dust off and gently wrapped it in brown paper.
Then he placed the parcel(包裹)in Reuben’s hands. Racing home, Reuben burst through the front door. “Here, Mum! Here!” Reuben exclaimed as he ran to her excitedly. Then he placed a small box in her work roughened hand. Mum unwrapped it carefully. A blue-velvet jewel box appeared. Mum gently lifted the lid, with tears welling up in her eyes. She had never received such a precious gift. A smile flashing across her face, she held Reuben tightly in her arms.

Being yourself is one important thing you have to remember when going to senior high school. I don’t know what your junior high school was like, but senior high school teachers will not care about such things as how much homework you have already finished in one night. It means that you had better learn to manage your time wisely.
Frank, Aged 16
I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day. You’ll probably love it. I know I did. You should join some clubs where you can meet people with the same interests.
James, Aged 16
I have to tell you the truth that the first day of my senior high school is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it soon. Don’t be afraid of anyone. Just take it easy. It really helps if you make some friends and stay with them. After the first week, you’ll feel better. Don’t worry.

C. To participate in the art performing. D. To cheer the athletes on in the games.
C. The artistic cheer squad will become a new trend.
D. The students’artistic efforts deserve to be admired.
7. What is the best title of the text
A. Move over, “Crazies,” the “Classies” are here
B. “Crazies” keep up, never give in to “Classies”
C. The Bruin Crazies, a “uniform” of bow ties
D. The Bruin Crazies, a big hit in Orem, Utah

However, doing housework does not distract young people. Instead, they are necessary for developing a strong working spirit, according to Julie Lythcott-Haims, the writer of How to Raise an Adult. “The earlier you started, the better…”, he said.
