Essentially, everyone has two ages: a chronological(按时间计算的) age, how old the calendar says you are, and a biological age, basically the age at which your body functions as it compares to average fitness or health levels.
“Chronological age isn’t how old we really are. It’s merely a number,” said Professor David Sinclair at Harvard University. “It is biological age that determines our health and ultimately our lifespan(寿命). We all age biologically at different rates according to our genes, what we eat, how much we exercise, and what environment we live in. Biological age is the number of candles we really should be blowing out. In the future, with advances in our ability to control biological age, we may have even fewer candles on our birthday cake than the previous one.”
To calculate biological age, Professor Levine at Yale University identified nine bio-markers that seemed to be the most influential on lifespan by a simple blood test. The numbers of those markers, such as blood sugar and immune measures, can be put into the computer, and the algorithm(算法) does the rest.
Perhaps what’s most important here is that these measures can be changed. Doctors can take this information and help patients make changes to lifestyle, and hopefully take steps to improve their biological conditions. “I think the most exciting thing about this research is that these things aren’t set in stone,” Levine said. “People can be given the information earlier and take steps to improve their health before it’s too late.”
Levine even entered her own numbers into the algorithm. She was surprised by the results. “I always considered myself a very healthy person. I’m physically active; I eat what I consider a fairly healthy diet. But I did not find my results to be as good as I had hoped they would be. It was a wake-up call,” she said.
Levine is working with a group to provide access to the algorithm online so that anyone can calculate their biological age, identify potential risks and take steps to improve their own health in the long run. “No one wants to live an extremely long life with a lot of chronic diseases,” Levine said. “By delaying the development of mental and physical functioning problems, people can still be engaged in society in their senior years. That is the ideal we should be pursuing.”
20. Biological age depends on __________.
A. what the calendar says about our age
B. when we start to take outdoor exercise
C. whether we can adapt ourselves to the environment
D. how well our body works compared with our peers’
21. What does the author want to tell us by Levine’s example in Paragraph 5
A. It is necessary to change our diet regularly.
B. The test results may give us wrong information.
C Waking up early in the morning is good for our fitness.
D. The algorithm can reveal our potential health problems.
22. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. Bio-markers Can Make Us Younger
B. Chronological Age and Biological Age
C. Old People can Still be Engaged in Society
D. Biological Age can Lag behind or Exceed Chronological Age

If you’re looking for any sort of career advice, it’s likely you’ve heard a certain suggestion before: Pursue your passion! In this economy, you’ll barely make any money no matter what you do, so why not do something you’re passionate about
However, that’s not exactly how the world works. Passion is rarely enough to get you through on its own. Finding a project you love is all well and good on a sunny day when you’re feeling okay. But on those gray days when you’re suffering from the flu or you’re otherwise down, passion is rarely enough to get it done.
I know that feeling. At the most basic level, I spend every day writing. I’m passionate about writing and the topics I cover. But today, it’s too cold outside. I didn’t get enough sleep and all I can think about is crawling into a nice warm bed. Yet, I’m sitting here, typing up a post just for you. How do I keep it up
There’s another route you could go. You could take on anything that pays the bills, then find fun projects you’re passionate about on the side. This is exactly the route I took when I was a freelancer(自由职业者) fresh out of college. That approach, as it happens, leads straight to passion burnout.
The reason I’m still planted firmly at my keyboard on a day when I don’t have an immediate deadline is not just because I’m passionate about writing. I also have a sense of purpose. Besides following your passion, you also need to define your purpose. I write to help businesses with their content because I know my writing makes a difference for them.
My purpose keeps my passion. My work is something I’ll stick to whether or not I feel passionate about writing anything today.
You can find your purpose as well as your passion-and then find a place where both intersect(交叉). It may be easier to find a day job you can tolerate. But the only way to find something that works for you is to get involved with different groups and to explore different purposes you care about. You don’t need an all-consuming cause, but you do need something you care enough about to give up sleeping in on the weekends. Only then will you really be capable of pursuing your passion, and your purpose along with it.
23. Who do you think the passage is written for
A. Writers. B. Job hunters. C. Managers. D. Career planners.
24. Which of the following statements will the author most probably agree with
A. People can work with passion if they earn a lot of money.
B. People work well only on sunny days or when they are well.
C. People need to find as many jobs as possible to discover their interest.
D. People work hard even though they are not passionate about something.
25. What’s the author’s attitude toward his job
A. Doubtful. B. Unconcerned. C. Determined. D. Challenged.
26. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. The difference between passion and purpose and how it affects your job search.
B. The importance of passion and how it gets you through when facing problems.
C. The relationship between passion and purpose and how it improves your life.
D. The importance of purpose and how it helps you keep a job.

New Jersey Middle School Makes Students Go Phone-Free
A middle school in Union County, New Jersey, is forcing its students to stay disconnected in class, by prohibiting cellphones. Maxson Middle School Principal Kevin Stansbury put forward the phone ban last week after he noticed some major issues in the school. “Our test scores were down, discipline was up,” he says. According to him, students were too focused on their phones to pay attention to their lessons. So, he purchased Yondr pouches for the school.
Yondr pouch
When students come into class each morning, they place their phones in the pouch, which is then locked up tight. It can only be opened using a special device at the end of the day. The ban on mobile devices applies not just during class time but during breaks, with the only exceptions being in times of emergency or in cases of students who need such devices to help with disabilities.
Eighth-graders who spoke with News 12 New Jersey say that they noticed a change in a matter of hours. “It’s just better for everyone because you’ll understand how it feels to get more work done instead of paying attention to the phone,” says student Charlene V. “I’m usually listening to music, but today I got to communicate with all my friends,” says student Desiree Duncan.
The program was originally met with resistance from students and parents, so the process was not that smooth. But teachers and administrators say that the program will have a major impact. “Students were talking and laughing and there were no cellphones other than being carried in the pouches,” Stansbury says.
Teacher Nia Cummings says she even noticed students bouncing ideas off each other in class. She says students used to give up quickly and just look for answers on their phones. She says they now try to figure it out themselves. “Everyone is socializing and eating lunch together. That’s what I wasn’t seeing enough of when phone usage was at its worst,” she adds.
Maxson Middle School is currently the only one in the district to use these pouches. Kevin Stansbury also called on all the schools in the community that it’s worth paying close attention to cellphone issues at secondary schools and taking actions when necessary.
27. Maxson Middle School put forward the phone ban because students _____.
A. weren’t focused on school work B. were always listening to music
C. used phones to cheat on exams D. stopped talking with others
28. What did the two eighth-graders tell the newspaper
A. Opposition from students. B. Teamwork with friends.
C. Daily routine at school. D. Effect of the program.
29. According to Nia Cummings, what change has the phone ban brought
A. Students discuss more in class. B. Students finish their work on time.
C. Students guess the answers themselves. D. Students check messages during the break.
30. It can be inferred from the passage that the phone ban _____.
A. has brought little change to teaching and learning
B. has gained support from every student and parent
C. might be carried out in other schools in the community
D. might have good influence on students'health conditions

C whether we can adapt ourselves to the environment
D. how well our body works compared with our peers’
21. What does the author want to tell us by Levine’s example in Paragraph 5
A. It is necessary to change our diet regularly.
B. The test results may give us wrong information.
C. Waking up early in the morning is good for our fitness.
D 21. D 22. D

It was a wake-up call”(但我发现我的结果并没有像我希望的那样好。
根据第二段第一句“Chronological age isn’t how old we really are. It’s merely a number.”(实际年龄并不是我们真正的年龄。这只是一个数字)和第二段第三句“We all age biologically at different rates according to our genes, what we eat, how much we exercise, and what environment we live in. ”(根据我们的基因、饮食、运动量以及所处的环境,我们的生理衰老速度各不相同。)及第五段前两句“Levine even entered her own numbers into the algorithm. She was surprised by the results.”(Levine甚至将自己的数字输入到算法中。

A Doubtful.
B 24. D 25. C 26. A

上文“In fact, the key to easy morning wake-up lies in resting your body clock(事实上,早晨轻松起床的关键在于让你的生物钟休息。)” 符合,引起下文,下文“Here is how to make one.(以下是制作一个睡眠计划的方法。)”
下文“In order to make a change, you need to decide why it’s important. Do you want to get up in time to have breakfast with your family, get in some exercise or just be better prepared for your day Once you are clear about your reason, tell your family or roommates about the change you want to make.(为了做出改变,你需要决定为什么它是重要的。你想准时起床和家人一起吃早餐,做些运动或者只是为你的一天做更好的准备吗?一旦你清楚了你的理由,告诉你的家人或室友你想要做的改变。)”可知,本段主要讲要找到自己的动机,B项“Find the right motivation.(找到正确的动机。)”符合,能概括本段内容,故选B。
【33题详解】
下文“That’s a quarter-hour more you could be sleeping if you bought a coffee maker with a timer.(如果你买一个带定时器的咖啡机,你可以多睡一刻钟。)” 符合,其中“the 15 minutes”呼应下文的“a quarter-hour”,故选G。
根据本段中心句“Keep your sleep/wake schedule on weekends.(周末保持你的睡眠/起床时间表)”可知,本段主要建议人们在周末也要坚持自己的作息时间,上文“But compensating (弥补) on the weekends actually feeds into your sleepiness the following week, a recent study found(但最近的一项研究发现,周末的补偿实际上会让你在接下来的一周更加困倦。)”
上文“After you’ve tried a new method for a week, take a look at your record.(在你尝试了一个星期的新方法之后,看看你的记录。)”指出我们在尝试新方法后,要自己做好记录同时进行评估,下文“If not, take another look at other methods you could try.(如果没有,再看看其他你可以尝试的方法。)”
