the number of 意为“ ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )……的数量”,后接名词复数。这个短语作主语时,谓语动词用单数形式。例如:The number of students is 2000.
a number of 意为“许多;很多”, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )相当于a lot of, 后接名词复数。这个短语作主语时,谓语动词用复数形式。例如:A number of students are playing.

as well 意为“ ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )也;还”,与too, also, as well同义。as well常用于句中或者句末。too一般放在句尾,可用逗号和前面的句子隔开,也可不用。also大多放在be动词、助动词、情态动词之后,实义动词之前。either常用于否定句句尾。
