Addy Barrett, an 11-year-old girl from Maryland, the US, is a regular visitor to the zoo, and never gets tired of watching gorillas（大猩猩）. "I really fell in love with these smart animals after reading a book about them, " Addy said. "I also learned they were being killed for unnecessary reasons. And I knew I needed to do something."

Addy asked Meredith Bastian, a zookeeper, about the challenges that wild gorillas are facing and that many people ignore. Bastian said it's because of habitat loss, climate change and the spread of disease. But there is also the problem of mining. Addy decided to start the Gorilla Heroes project. She has held fundraisers（筹款活动）hoping to start a conversation on the risks to gorillas. After all, it's the language we first hear and the language we first learn to speak. So it's a serious thing that a language disappears. Over the last century, more than 400 languages have died. Some languages are now spoken only by a few dozen people, like Yagan in Chile. Africa and South America are also places where many languages are imperiled.
Why are humans speaking fewer languages than we once did The answer has to do with globalization. With greater trade and communication, the planet has become smaller. Some people aren't prepared to accept a planet with fewer and fewer languages.
Through efforts both large and small, they are getting people to speak and read in certain languages, and to pass them on. The United Nations has set Feb 21st as International Mother Language Day to raise awareness of dying languages. This work is very important. As US writer Rita Mac Brown wrote, "Language is the road map of a culture. It tells where its people come from and where they are going."

Did you watch the popular TV series Meet Yourself during your winter vacation In the TV series, the heroine Xu Hongdou travels to a village in Yunnan province and volunteers at a local cafe. Volunteer travel refers to taking a trip where all or part of the purpose of the trip is to participate in an arranged service opportunity to help others. These volunteer trips are usually arranged by church organizations, human interest groups or nonprofit organizations, and they take form of equal exchanges. During the trip, volunteer travelers often provide services like teaching, cooking, animal caring, and cultural activities. In exchange for their help, the volunteers may get free or discounted accommodation, meals and laundry, activities, or classes.
Traditionally, the volunteer activities take place in a foreign country. However, just as what Meet Yourself describes, more volunteer trips have taken place within the same countries or regions the volunteers originate from in recent years. Sanlian Lifeweek magazine commented that volunteer projects in rural areas are now attracting more urban visitors as a break from the fast and stressful pace of urban living. People try volunteer travel for several reasons. By working voluntarily while traveling, travelers may make a real, positive impact on the world. M: What happened, Judy
W: My son is seriously ill, and no one can take care of him at home.
M: I`m sorry to hear that. And you know we`re quite busy at the moment.
W: I know that, but you can find a replacement for me.
M: I`ll consider that. When can you be back
W: Perhaps Thursday, two days off. His father should come back from England by then.
M: And can`t you find a babysitter
W: I`ve tried. But in such an emergent case, it`s not so easy to find a babysitter.
M: I see. I will arrange for Joe to take over your job. You must hand your job over to him properly.
W: You`re so considerate, Mr. Green.
M: Wish your son well sooner.

M: So, two men grabbed your bag as you came out of the bank and ran off down the street. Is that correct
W: Yes. One of them stopped me and asked me the time. The other one grabbed my bag.
M: Would you please describe them
W: I`m not sure, because it happened so quickly.
M: The one who asked you the time, what did he look like
W: Well, let me see. He was short and he had gray hair and a little moustache. He was very thin, about 20 years old. And he was wearing a black jacket.
M: Did you notice the colour of his eyes
W: Yes. They were brown.
M: Good. And what about the other man
W: I`m sorry, I didn`t get a good look at him. He was quite tall. I remember he had a beard. He was bald and he appeared much older than the short one.
M: Thank you. We may call you tomorrow.
W: OK.

M: Now listen carefully! I want to tell you about a new TV quiz show for teenagers. It`s called Answer That, and it will be on Channel Five at four o`clock every Thursday. It will be just like the popular adult quiz show on the same channel on Monday afternoons.
I`m sure you`ve all seen that! Every week there will be forty-eight teenagers on the programme. They will be in eight teams, and each team will have six people. The questions will be easy at the beginning of the quiz and then they will get more difficult. They will all be about films, music and TV. In the end there will be only one team left—the winners. There will be some great prizes. This week the winners will all get a new camera. Everyone loves taking photos. Next week first prize is a laptop.
