UNESCO World Heritage Sites were created to celebrate and safeguard the most unique places around the world. Below are my 4 favorite UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Cinque Terre, Italy
With cars banned here, you'll really get to feel the unique history and character of the Cinque Terre's five centuries-old coastal villages. The breathtaking views of harbors far below the wild coastline along with the rich colors will definitely make it a memorable holiday.
Angkor Wat, Cambodia
Angkor Wat is the world's largest religious(宗教的)monument and it contains impressive remains from the Khmer Empire(9th to 15th century). The site has dozens of iconic temples like Ta Prohm(a magnificent temple ruin hidden in the jungle). Hosting more than two million visitors annually, this artistic masterpiece is a must-see site.
Petra, Jordan
Petra's rock-cut architecture has contributed to its nickname, the Rose City, based on the color of the stone it was carved from. The delicate constructions of temples and tombs along with the remains of churches and temples are only a couple of reasons why this world-famous site is a must-visit destination.
Yellowstone National Park, USA
Yellowstone's vast wilderness includes mountain ranges, lakes and waterfalls. One of the main reasons for tourists to visit Yellowstone is to observe the amazing wildlife like grizzly bear, bison, bighorn sheep wander the plains and valleys.

Addy Barrett, an 11-year-old girl from Maryland, the US, is a regular visitor to the zoo, and never gets tired of watching gorillas(大猩猩). "I really fell in love with these smart animals after reading a book about them, " Addy said. "I also learned they were being killed for unnecessary reasons. And I knew I needed to do something."
Addy is now working to save her favorite animals. She has sold T-shirts and home-made cookies to raise money, and she hosts a party about the gorilla yearly.
Addy asked Meredith Bastian, a zookeeper, about the challenges that wild gorillas are facing and that many people ignore. Bastian said it's because of habitat loss, climate change and the spread of disease. But there is also the problem of mining. "Some mines in Congo, Africa destroy gorillas' habitats and make their living conditions worse," Bastian told Addy.
Addy decided to start the Gorilla Heroes project. She has held fundraisers(筹款活动)hoping to start a conversation on the risks to gorillas. The animals, which are native to Central Africa, are endangered. There are fewer than 900 mountain gorillas and about 100,000 western lowland gorillas in the world. So far, Gorilla Heroes has raised more than $11,000. Addy was recently named a winner of the 2019 Gloria Barton Prize for Young Heroes for her work.

Nelson Mandela, once said: "If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart." Mandela understood our mother language is very personal thing to us.
After all, it's the language we first hear and the language we first learn to speak. We can communicate in a nuanced(微妙的)way through our mother language, expressing our emotions and moods more fluently. We make friends in our mother language. We fall in love in it. When we die, we know people will mourn for us in our mother language.
For people who speak an ancient tongue as their mother language, their language is their main link with their ancestors. And it is also how they imagine the future. So it's a serious thing that a language disappears. Over the last century, more than 400 languages have died. Some languages are now spoken only by a few dozen people, like Yagan in Chile. Africa and South America are also places where many languages are imperiled.
Why are humans speaking fewer languages than we once did The answer has to do with globalization. With greater trade and communication, the planet has become smaller. Some people aren't prepared to accept a planet with fewer and fewer languages.
Through efforts both large and small, they are getting people to speak and read in certain languages, and to pass them on. The United Nations has set Feb 21st as International Mother Language Day to raise awareness of dying languages. This work is very important. As US writer Rita Mac Brown wrote, "Language is the road map of a culture. It tells where its people come from and where they are going."
28. The author uses Nelson Mandela's words in order to__________.
A. show great respect for Mandela
B. stress the importance of mother language
C. show Mandela's contribution to language
D. draw our attention to language learning
29. What does the underlined "it" in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. The friendship. B. The emotion.
C. The mother language. D. The ancient tongue.
30. What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph
A. The road map of a culture. B. Efforts to save the dying languages.
C. A planet with fewer languages. D. International Mother Language Day.
31. What might be the best title for the text
A. Our Languages Tell Us More B. Why Languages are Disappearing
C. The Rise and Fall of a Language D. International Mother Language Day
D
Did you watch the popular TV series Meet Yourself during your winter vacation In the TV series, the heroine Xu Hongdou travels to a village in Yunnan province and volunteers at a local cafe. She gets free meals in return. As the show finds a growing audience, volunteer travel—an old-yet-modern form of travel similar to Xu's type of work—has attracted more attention.
Volunteer travel refers to taking a trip where all or part of the purpose of the trip is to participate in an arranged service opportunity to help others. These volunteer trips are usually arranged by church organizations, human interest groups or nonprofit organizations, and they take form of equal exchanges. During the trip, volunteer travelers often provide services like teaching, cooking, animal caring, and cultural activities. In exchange for their help, the volunteers may get free or discounted accommodation, meals and laundry, activities, or classes.
Traditionally, the volunteer activities take place in a foreign country. However, just as what Meet Yourself describes, more volunteer trips have taken place within the same countries or regions the volunteers originate from in recent years. Sanlian Lifeweek magazine commented that volunteer projects in rural areas are now attracting more urban visitors as a break from the fast and stressful pace of urban living. Yang Yan, a founder of a volunteer platform, told the magazine that it has indeed been a growing trend for urban residents to volunteer in rural areas.
People try volunteer travel for several reasons. By working voluntarily while traveling, travelers may make a real, positive impact on the world. The services volunteers provide can be through charities with lower costs for the communities they serve. Another benefit of volunteer travel is that it helps urban residents to experience rural life. For those who are sick of urban pressure but can't make up their minds whether to move permanently to the countryside, volunteer travel can be a solution. In this way, as Yang comments, travelers can catch some relief from their busy lives, while rural communities also benefit by receiving more customers for local tourism industries and temporary high-quality labor.
32. Why does the author mention Meet Yourselfin the beginning of the text
A. To introduce a new way of travel. B. To lead up to the topic of the text.
C. To show the popularity of this TV series. D. To raise readers' interest in the TV series.
33. What can we learn about volunteer travel from the text
A. Its only purpose is to help others.
B. It requires travelers to be highly educated.
C. Its travelers can get something in return for their help.
D. It's typically organized by those who want to make money.
34. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about
A. A new trend of volunteer trips. B. The future of volunteer trips.
C. The significance of volunteer trips. D. Different views on volunteer trips.
35. Why are more urban residents attracted by volunteer projects in rural areas nowadays
A. To give back to society. B. To get away from busy lives.
C. To provide high-quality labor. D. To support the rural tourism industry.

M: Now listen carefully! I want to tell you about a new TV quiz show for teenagers. It`s called Answer That, and it will be on Channel Five at four o`clock every Thursday. It will be just like the popular adult quiz show on the same channel on Monday afternoons.
I`m sure you`ve all seen that! Every week there will be forty-eight teenagers on the programme. They will be in eight teams, and each team will have six people. The questions will be easy at the beginning of the quiz and then they will get more difficult. They will all be about films, music and TV. In the end there will be only one team left—the winners. There will be some great prizes. This week the winners will all get a new camera. Everyone loves taking photos. Next week first prize is a laptop. If you would like to be on Answer That, then call 0573-5789. Just give your name, age and school address, and maybe you will be on TV soon!
