No one probably ever thought that masks(面具;口罩)would be one of the best-selling things in the world in2020.
However, because of coVID-19, they have become a daily used thing for many people.The earliest recorded mask-like objects in history date back to the 6th centuryBC.Some pictures of people wearing cloths over their mouths were found in West Asia. In China, a kind of scarfs with silk and gold threads(线) from the Yuan Dynasty is believed to be the earliest thing that is similar to today's mask.According to a record, servants who served the emperor during meals needed to wear silk scarves to cover their mouths and noses. It was believed that the silk scarves would keep the servants’ breath from influencing the smell and taste of the food.
The design of the mask took a big step forward in the 19th century. In 1848, the mask made for miners (矿工) got the first patent (专利). It was meaningful in the history of masks. They were closer to gas masks.
In 1861, a French scientist found there were bacteria (细菌)in the air, which made more people pay attention to the design of modern masks.
During the late Qing Dynasty,the Chinese medical scientist Wu Liande invented a mask made of gauze (薄纱) called “Wu's mask".
