Year-12 student Noah Little has already sat his first Chinese-speaking exam and said it was “the easiest exam I’ve ever done”. That view is not surprising given the Wagga High School student loves language — so much so he has built a Chinese translation app.
Noah said his love of language was encouraged by his community. “Wagga is a place full of people from different cultures, and sometimes when I meet new people who have trouble speaking English I like to talk to them in their own language,” he said. “I also have a few Chinese friends so I think it will be cool to talk to them in their language.”
The 17-year-old started teaching himself Chinese around five years ago, before taking distance education classes at the start of Year 11. His language ability was also useful in his part-time job at a local Chinese restaurant, where he translated orders for the cooks and customers.
Noah said he also had a basic knowledge of seven other languages. It was while teaching himself languages that Noah got the idea of the translation tool. “I decided to make my own app because there weren’t many around — all the other apps were full of advertisements (广告) and the translation feature (功能) wasn’t powerful enough,” he said.
His app also includes a word of the day feature, lessons on how to write Chinese characters (汉字) and a news feed of important Chinese news.
He said learning computer programming to build the app had been like studying another language. With the end of school around the corner, Noah said he would like to pursue (追求) both his interests in computer programming and languages. “I’m planning to work for a year and save so I can go on to university as I really want to make a career (事业) out of one of these two topics.”
24. What do we know about Noah
A. He began to learn Chinese at 11. B. He failed his first Chinese exam.
C. He likes teaching Chinese to people. D. He gets a lot from learning Chinese.
25. What are included in Noah’s app
A. Advertisements. B. Pieces of world news.
C. Suggestions for memorizing words. D. Ways of writing Chinese characters.
26. What has Noah decided to do shortly after high school graduation
A. Look for a job. B. Attend university.
C. Develop a new app. D. Learn more languages.
27. Which of the following can best describe Noah
A. Curious and creative. B. Humorous and honest.
C. Courageous and caring. D. Outgoing and outspoken.

In the west of the Greek capital Athens, the fish market of Keratsini is busy early in the morning, with trucks waiting nearby to be loaded with fishes. But on his fishing boat, Arapakis sorts out something different—bottles, boots, plastic pipes and fishing nets, all dragged from the bed of the Aegean Sea.
“We are swimming in plastic,” said Arapakis, whose family has fished for five generations. “By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the sea,” he said, as recent reports noted.
That morning’s plastic catch weighed “about 100 kilograms,” said the founder of Enaleia, a nonprofit that encourages fishermen to collect marine (海洋的) waste caught in their nets. Since its establishment in 2018, it has worked with more than 1,200 fishermen in Greece to raise concern over the degradation of the marine environment.
Active in 42 ports throughout Greece, Enaleia provides fishermen with large bags for marine waste that they can put in garbage cans once back at port. For every kilogram of plastic they deliver, they receive a small amount of money, which is enough for a drink. Since October, fishing crews have dragged out 20 metric tons of plastic and old fishing equipment each month. Nearly 600 tons have been collected over the last five years. The collected plastic is transported to a recycling plant in the industrial area of Megara near Keratsini, to make new products such as socks, swimwear or furniture.
Arapakis said he went about the cleanup project after a trip to Greece’s Cyclades islands, where he saw fishermen throwing the waste gathered by their nets back into the sea.
Arapakis is convinced there has been a “mentality change” among Greece’s fishermen. “Previously we caught large quantities of plastic, but we only kept the fish. All waste was thrown into the sea,” said Mokharam, team leader on the Arapakis family’s boat. “The project brings practical benefits for fishing boats. In the past, the anchor was often caught by waste, especially nets, and the engine would go out. But now things have changed,” he added.
28. What can we learn about Arapakis from the first 2 paragraphs
A. He was a successful fish trader. B. He collected waste from the sea.
C. He liked swimming in the sea. D. He had a large family to support.
29. What does the underlined word “degradation” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Impact. B. Worsening. C. Improvement. D. Research.
30. What will most probably happen to the collected waste in the end
A. It will be sold at a high price. B. It will be exchanged for food.
C. It will be thrown back into the sea. D. It will be well dealt with for reuse.
31. What can we infer from Mokharam’s words
A. Fishing is a tough job for fishermen. B. The sea in Greece is seriously polluted.
C. He thinks highly of the cleanup project. D. He still feels ashamed for fishermen’s behavior.
D
Anyone who’s lived through middle school knows those years can be particularly challenging. Some researches show youths across the U.S. are struggling with mental health. The physical health benefits of bike riding have been well-documented. Wilson, a researcher at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, and his co-authors carried out a new study to see if taking part in a cycling program could result in measurable changes in mind for teenagers.
The study involved more than 1,200 students, ages 11 to 14. Students participated in a cycling class for at least three days a week, for a period of 6 weeks. They learned cycling safety and practicing skills outdoors while raising their heart rate and just having fun. The students completed standardized questionnaires before and after the program designed to measure their health.
“We know cycling can benefit the body. Our research shows how it benefits the mind and social relationships as well. Bike riding can be an ideal activity for adolescents because of the benefits it offers,” said Wilson.
“Cycling engages several parts of brain function. You are looking at your hearing, you’re balancing, you’re navigating and turning. Oftentimes, you’re doing it with someone else, so there’s the positive effect of company or group activity,” said Allan Reiss, a professor at Stanford University School of Medicine.
While exercise has powerful mental health benefits, it’s not universal. For example, previous research has shown that teenage girls are at higher risk of mental health problems like depression and anxiety than boys. The current study found that, while middle school girls reported increased well-being after participating in the cycling program, that increase “may just reach the kind of baseline level for male students,” Wilson said. And other aspects of healthy living are also important, noted Wilson. The study found that teenagers who didn’t limit screen time to a maximum of two hours a day, or who got less than the recommended 8.5 hours of sleep, saw less improvement in their well-being, he said.
32. What does the new study mainly focus on
A. Challenges in middle school. B. Youths in America.
C. Physical benefits of cycling. D. Mental effects of bike riding.
33. What did the students do in the program
A Attend the cycling class for a week.
B. Learn how to keep safe while cycling.
C. Raise their heart rate by cycling indoors.
D. Design questions to measure their health.
34. What is Reiss’s attitude to the result of the study
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Negative.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Application of the research results.
B. Doubts about the research methods.
C. Further explanation of the research findings.
D. Supporting evidence from previous research.

Jack was a bright and curious child, always eager to learn new things and explore the mysterious world about science. However, he often found himself in disagreement with his mother. His mother was always busy with her work and she didn’t have enough time to learn about his interests and passions.
One day, Jack came home from school feeling particularly excited. He just found a sci-fi book about an adventure on the moon. Upon arriving at home, he couldn’t tear himself away from the book. He read and read until it was dark. Having finished reading it, he couldn’t wait to share it with his mother, only to be told that he should focus on more practical subjects like math and history, which would help him get into a good college and have a successful career.
Jack couldn’t understand why his mother didn’t see the value in what he was doing. He felt that she was holding him back and not allowing him to pursue his true interests. “Why can’t you see how important this is to me ” Jack asked his mother angrily. “I’m never going to be happy if I have to spend my life doing things that I show no interest in just because they are practical or make you proud.”
The once peaceful home was filled with tension and anger. His mother’s voice grew louder as she shouted, “You can’t just do whatever you want! You should be responsible for your future!” Jack, fueled by his own frustration, shot back, “I am tired of you always telling me what to do! I am not a child anymore! You only care about your own feeling! You never thought about my feeling!” They were so caught up in their own anger and hurt that they failed to see how their words and actions were affecting each other.

【答案】28. B 29. B 30. D 31. C

【导语】本文是一篇新闻报道。介绍了希腊首都雅典西部的一个渔市场,以及该地区渔民们在捕捞过程中遇到的海洋垃圾问题。
【28题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“But on his fishing boat, Arapakis sorts out something different—bottles, boots, plastic pipes and fishing nets, all dragged from the bed of the Aegean Sea.(但是在他的渔船上,Arapakis整理了一些不同的东西——瓶子、靴子、塑料管和渔网,都是从爱琴海的海床上拖出来的)”以及第二段““We are swimming in plastic,” said Arapakis, whose family has fished for five generations. “By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the sea,” he said, as recent reports noted.(“我们在塑料中游泳,”Arapakis说,他的家族已经有五代人在捕鱼。正如最近的报道所指出的那样,他说:“到2050年,海洋中的塑料将比鱼还多。”)”可知,这两段主要讲述了Arapakis从海里收集废物。故选B项。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据前文“That morning’s plastic catch weighed “about 100 kilograms,” said the founder of Enaleia, a nonprofit that encourages fishermen to collect marine (海洋的)waste caught in their nets.(Enaleia是一家鼓励渔民收集渔网捕获的海洋垃圾的非营利组织,该组织的创始人说,那天早上捕获的塑料重“约100公斤”)”可知,海洋中的垃圾很多,所以海洋环境现在是在恶化,推知degradation意为“恶化”,和B项意思相近。故选B项。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“The collected plastic is transported to a recycling plant in the industrial area of Megara near Keratsini, to make new products such as socks, swimwear or furniture.(收集到的塑料被运送到位于Keratsini附近的Megara工业区的一家回收厂,用于制造袜子、泳衣或家具等新产品)”可知,收集的废物最终将被很好地处理以重用。故选D项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Arapakis is convinced there has been a “mentality change” among Greece’s fishermen. But now things have changed,” he added.(Arapakis确信,希腊渔民的“心态发生了变化”。“以前我们捕获了大量的塑料,但我们只保留了鱼。所有的垃圾都被扔进了海里,”Arapakis船上的领队Mokharam说。“该项目为渔船带来了实际利益。在过去,锚经常被废物,特别是网缠住,引擎会熄火。但现在情况变了。”)”可知,Mokharam认为该项目为渔船带来了实际利益,所以他对清理工程评价很高。故选C项。

A. Attend the cycling class for a week.
B. Learn how to keep safe while cycling.
C. Raise their heart rate by cycling indoors.
D Design questions to measure their health.
34. What is Reiss’s attitude to the result of the study
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Negative.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Application of the research results.
B. Doubts about the research methods.
C. Further explanation of the research findings.
D. Supporting evidence from previous research.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. A 35. C

【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中Wilson所说的话“Our research shows how it benefits the mind and social relationships as well. (我们的研究表明,它对大脑和社会关系也有好处)”可知,该研究发现骑自行车也有益于大脑和社会关系;再结合第四段中Reiss所说的话“Cycling engages several parts of brain function. You are looking at your hearing, you’re balancing, you’re navigating and turning. Oftentimes, you’re doing it with someone else, so there’s the positive effect of company or group activity (骑自行车涉及大脑的几个部分的功能。你在留心你听到的东西,你在平衡,你在操纵和转弯。通常,你是和别人一起做的,所以陪伴或团体活动有积极的影响)”可知,Reiss也认为骑自行车可以锻炼大脑的多个功能,且其过程中的陪伴或团体活动有积极意义。由此推知,Reiss对研究发现持支持的态度。故选A项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段内容,尤其是其中的“While exercise has powerful mental health benefits, it’s not universal. (虽然运动对精神健康有很大的好处,但并不是普遍的)”和“And other aspects of healthy living are also important, noted Wilson. (Wilson指出,健康生活的其他方面也很重要)”可知,本段从两个方面对研究结果做出进一步的解释,一是骑自行车对精神健康的好处存在性别差异,女孩少于男孩,二是其他有关健康生活的因素也会影响这种好处的大小,例如屏幕时间和睡眠时间的长短。故选C项。

【答案】 Jack rushed into his bedroom and locked the door heavily. He lay on the bed, huddling himself in the quilt. What he really wanted to do was to cut himself off from the whole world, especially from his mother. He couldn't figure out why his mother didn't understand him and why she forced him to do something he didn't like. Slowly, he fell asleep while thinking.Suddenly he was awakened, hearing his mother's voice outside the door, which was filled with apologies and tenderness. His mother promised him that she would respect his interests in the future.
When Jack heard his mother’s words, regretful tears rolled down his face. He realized that everything his mother did was totally for the sake of his future and what he said hurt his mother's heart hard. It occurred to him that he had never showed his gratitude to his mother. He couldn’t wait to open the door and said thank you to his mother, who was standing in the doorway. He also promised his mother that he would study hard in practical subjects. Finaly, misunderstanding cleared, they hugged each other tightly with a joyful smile.
