When we pronounce words with more than one syllable, we stress one of the syllables. The stressed syllable sounds stronger. The stress can be on the first, middle or last syllable of a word.
当我们发超过一个音节的单词时，我们会重读其中一个音节，重读的音节听起来更响亮，重读可以是一个单词的第一个音节，中间音节或者最后一个音节。

元音是构成音节的主体，辅音是音节的分界线。
1. 两辅音之间不管有多少个元音，一般都是一个音节。
如：bed 床，bet 打赌，seat 座位，beat 毒打，beauty 美。
2. 两元音字母之间有一个辅音字母时，辅音字母归后
一音节，如：stu'dent 学生，la'bour 劳动。
3.有两个辅音字母时，一个辅音字母归前一音节，一个
归后一音节，如：let'ter 信，win'ter 冬天。

4.不能拆分的字母组合按字母组合划分音节。如：
fa'ther 父亲，tea'cher 教师。
单词的发音灵魂是元音，掌握这一点就不难了。
方法是这样的：从单词的左边往右边看，以一
个元音加上其左边的辅音为一个音节。如果该
元音前面没有辅音，那它就是独立音节。

按照一个单词有几个音节来划分
每个单词都是由一个个音节组成的，所以单词就
可以按照音节来分成这几种类型：单音节，双音
节，多音节
1. 单音节——一个音节叫单音节。只有一个音节 的
单词叫单音节词（ monosyllable ）。比如：take
2. 双音节——两个音节叫双音节。只有两个音节的
单词叫双音节词（ disyllable ）。比如： letter

3. 多音节词——三个音节以上叫多音节。有三个或者三个以上的单词叫多音节词（ polysyllable ）。
比如:population， congratulation， communication， tomorrow，telephone

需要使用重读符号。如：

双音节词的重音及读法
双音节词的重音一般落在第一个音节上。如：sister ['sist ] 、brother ['br ]等。
如何划分音节：1、在两个音节的相邻处有两
个辅音字母时（r）除外。如：let-ter， Eng-lish ，
ap-ple。2、在两个音节的相邻处只有一个辅音字
母时（辅音字母组合除外，如：ch,ck,sh,th),这种
情况要借助字典。

多音节的词一般都是倒数第三个音节重读；
三个音节的词当然就是第一个音节重读。
