Ben Francis didn’t become wealthy through a family inheritance (遗产). Instead, the CEO and co-founder of Gymshark used his earnings as a Pizza Hut delivery guy to buy a sewing machine and start his fitness apparel (服饰) company at 19.
Eleven years later, his effort paid off. Francis, 30, who has a reported net worth of $1.3 billion, joined Forbes’ billionaires list. He’s in rare company: the list’s average age is 65 years old.
Originally, Francis and co-founder Lewis Morgan launched Gymshark as a website selling fitness products. But after getting bored with his ill-fitting clothes, Francis suggested pivoting the company.
Francis and Morgan bought a sewing machine. The pair brought Gymshark to a bodybuilding exhibition in 2013, but didn’t have any money to spend on advertising. On a whim (一时兴起), they decided to give popular fitness YouTubers free products. “My heroes were on YouTube,” Francis said. “So it would be so cool if my heroes could come to be with Gymshark at this event. I didn’t really think that much about it.” Some of those influencers went on to wear the clothes on their channels, bringing Gymshark’s sales to $45,000 per day, up from just $450.
Francis quit the CEO role in 2017. “CEO was not the right role for me when I was in my early 20s,” Francis said. “That I’d started a business which had grown very quickly didn’t mean I have the full ability to be a good leader.” He spent the next four years supporting leadership roles within Gymshark---including chief product officer and chief marketing officer – to learn more about the ins and outs of the business, before returning as CEO in 2021.
That year, the company was valued at $1.45 billion. Still, the company’s billion-dollar valuation is a small percentage of the market value of competitors like Nike and Lululemon. “I really think Gymshark can be the UK’s answer to those brands,” Francis said. “But that’s not saying that the UK is where it starts and ends for us. We also want to be a truly global brand.”
24. What makes Ben Francis special on Forbes’ billionaires list
A. His age. B. His wealth. C. His talent. D. His company.
25. What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 mean
A. Taking control of. B. Making the best of.
C. Making changes to. D. Attaching importance to.
26. Why did Francis and Morgan offer popular fitness YouTubers free products
A. To win the support of popular YouTubers.
B. To advertise their products in a cheap way.
C. To build a good relationship with YouTube.
D. To get the chance to meet their heroes on YouTube.
27. Which can be the best title for the text
A. Gymshark: From a website to a big company
B. Gymshark: Taking the lead in fitness clothing
C. Francis: Starting the UK’s fastest-growing company
D. Francis: From a Pizza Hut delivery guy to a billionaire

In Europe, nine out of ten students study a foreign language. In the United States, only one in five does. From 1997 to 2008, the number of American middle schools offering foreign languages dropped from 75percent to 58 percent. From 2009 to 2013, one American college closed its foreign language program; from 2013 to 2017, 651 others did the same.
At first glance, these statistics look like a tragedy (悲剧). But I am starting to accept the strange idea that maybe they are not. What is changing my mind is technology.
I was in Belgium not long ago, and I watched various tourists from different nations use speech translation apps to change their own languages into English and French. The newer ones can even reproduce the tone of the speaker’s voice.
I know a foreign language is a window into a new way of understanding the world. But even beyond the fact that this idea has been rather oversold, can we really say the low level of French or Spanish we and our classmates usually picked up in school really gave us a new look into the world and our lives in it And if our goals are more limited and practical --- for instance, getting directions to the bus station in Rome-technology now makes that possible at the press of a button. With a smart phone and an app, foreign languages will no longer present most people with the challenge they once did. Learning to speak a new language well will be necessary for those who want to engage with (从事) literature or media in the original language, as well as those of us who find pleasure in it just because they are “there”. Strange as that is, it is in its way a kind of progress.
28. What is the author’s opinion about the drop in foreign language learning in the United States
A. It is a tragedy that needs to be avoided.
B. It is an unacceptable situation that harms society.
C. It is a challenge that will be overcome in the future.
D. It is a positive development due to advanced technology.
29. What is the author’s attitude towards the idea that learning a foreign language gives us a new look into the world
A. Unconcerned. B. Doubtful. C. Curious. D. Supportive.
30. How does technology influence language learning for practical purposes
A. It makes the process easier and within reach.
B. It provides an easy way to understand the world.
C. It removes the need for language learning altogether.
D. It improves the traditional methods of language learning.
31. Which of the following questions can be answered in the text
A. What challenges do translation apps bring to language learning
B. Why is it still necessary to learn foreign languages in the digital age
C. Will translation apps make learning foreign languages old-fashioned
D. How can technology help us learn foreign languages more efficiently
D
A study led by a researcher from the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology has updated the fossil (化石) record of mosquitoes (蚊子) by nearly 30 million years and has discovered that ancient male mosquitoes also fed on blood.
The study was published online on Monday in the journal Current Biology, which discovered the oldest-known mosquito fossils --- two males dating back 130 million years near the town of Hammana in Lebanon.
Dany Azar, who led the study, said the fossils not only told us the ancient origins of mosquitoes but also their feeding habits during the early stages of their growth. “We find that the mosquito group is developing, which gives us an idea about their behavior of feeding on blood” said Azar, who has been working on the subject for more than 25 years.
Before the recent findings and their study, only female mosquitoes were known to feed on blood, which they need for protein to produce their eggs. Males, which lack skin-piercing (刺入皮肤的) mouthparts, mostly feed on honey and plant juices.
“The feeding habits of insects, such as feeding on blood, are believed to have developed from their piercing mouthparts. However, studying the development of this behavior has been challenging due to the lack of insect fossil records.” Azar said.
While reexamining the mosquito fossils last year, Azar found that their unique piercing mouthparts, very similar to those of female mosquitoes today, had been kept well. Their sharp mandibles (下颌骨) gradually disappeared over the centuries.
Based on the findings, the researchers agreed that male mosquitoes fed on blood 130 million years ago. Azar, who is now a professor at the Nanjing institute, said he hopes that joint scientific explorations can be widely carried out in the future to promote more discoveries.
32. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage
A. Female mosquitoes feed on blood for protein to produce eggs.
B. A minority of male mosquitoes feed on honey and plant juices.
C. Two female mosquito fossils were found near the town of Hammana.
D. Male mosquitoes have the same feeding habits as female mosquitoes.
33. According to Azar, why is the study on the development of feeding on blood challenging
A. Because his team lacks money.
B. Because there is no talent studying it.
C. Because his team wants to study another subject.
D. Because his team is short of insect fossil records.
34. What conclusion can we draw from mosquito fossils
A. Female mosquitoes fed on blood 130 million years ago.
B. Male mosquitoes’ sharp mouthparts gradually disappeared.
C. The mouthparts of the female mosquitoes have been kept well.
D. Male mosquitoes once shared similar mouthparts with female today.
35. What’s the article mainly about
A The mosquito group is developing.
B. Ancient male mosquitoes probably fed on blood.
C. The oldest-known mosquito fossils were discovered.
D. Female and male mosquitoes share similar feeding habits now.

A little bird landed on the tree branch outside Lisa’s bedroom window. It sang energetically as the first pale yellow rays of sunshine appeared.
“Oh, my god, what is that noise ” Lisa complained to herself, pulling her bed sheets over her head to ignore the sound. It was no use, and she knew it. The loud sound showed the coming of the day. Lisa’s mom knocked twice on her door, and then came in with a smile. “Time to get up, Sleepyhead,” She whispered. “The early bird catches the worm, you know.”
“Ugh,” mumbled (含含糊糊地说) Lisa into her pillow. “What does that even mean ”
“It’s just an expression Honey”, her mom replied. She gave Lisa a kiss on the cheek and urged her to get out of bed. Lisa rolled over and slept for a few more minutes.
With her mom’s repeated urging, Lisa had no choice but to get herself dressed. She went unwillingly downstairs for breakfast, ate slowly, and missed her bus. When she finally got to school, she failed to get a place in the Chess Club. She also missed the first part of math class, so she didn’t understand the lesson and had to get extra help at lunchtime. Her teacher gave her extra homework to make sure she knew it. As a result, she missed her favourite library time. This day was no fun.
The next morning, Lisa was woken up by the same loud noisy song. Instead of ignoring it, today Lisa walked over to the window and opened the curtains. “Well, hello there, little fellow,” she said when she saw the pretty bird outside, still singing happily. As she watched, the bird stuck its beak (喙) into the wet ground, and pulled out a wiggling (不停摇摆) worm for breakfast.
“Today I am going to be the early bird,” thought Lisa.

M: Oh, really Sounds good to me. But…
W: Are you too busy with your study
M: No, actually I haven’t played the piano for a long time. I’m afraid I can’t play as well as I used to.
W: Don’t worry about it. We’ll be practicing for a few months before we have to perform.
M: OK, then, I’d be glad to. It can help me relax and it’s a good chance to meet new people.
W: That’s true. And I’m sure your piano will be a great addition to our group.
M: I do hope so.

W: Hello, everyone. Do you know Ben Nevis It’s the highest mountain in Britain. Today I’ll tell you my experience of climbing it. It was in February. We camped at the bottom of the mountain. Although the weather forecast was perfect, with no winds or snow, there was still a general feeling of nervousness when we set out. The group soon climbed and my legs felt heavy. Being the weakest member of the group, I had to rest more frequently. The others sometimes stopped for a break to let me catch up. After seven hours of climbing, we reached the top. On a clear day, we saw the sea and the Isle of Skye right across it. On Ben Nevis, getting back to camp can be as much of a challenge as going up. When I finally came back to the tent, I couldn’t say I really enjoyed the experience, but at least I made it to the top.

A 25. C 26. B 27. D
根据第二段“Francis, 30, who has a reported net worth of $1.3 billion, joined Forbes’ billionaires list. He’s in rare company: the list’s average age is 65 years old.(30岁的弗朗西斯以13亿美元的净资产跻身《福布斯》亿万富豪榜。他的情况很少见:上榜富豪的平均年龄为65岁。)”可知,让Ben Francis在《福布斯》(Forbes)亿万富豪榜上显得特别的是他的年龄。故选A。
根据第三段“after getting bored with his ill-fitting clothes(在厌倦了不合身的衣服之后)”可知,在厌倦了不合身的衣服之后就该做出改变了,因此划线词pivoting的意思是“更改,改变”,和C选项“Making changes to(更改)”意思相近,故选C。
根据第四段“Some of those influencers went on to wear the clothes on their channels, bringing Gymshark’s sales to $450,000 per day, up from just $450.(其中一些有影响力的人继续在他们的频道上穿这些衣服,使Gymshark的日销售额从450美元上升到45万美元。)”
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Instead, the CEO and co-founder of Gymshark used his earnings as a Pizza Hut delivery guy to buy a sewing machine and start his fitness apparel (服饰) company at 19.(相反,这位Gymshark公司的首席执行官兼联合创始人用自己在必胜客送外卖的收入买了一台缝纫机,并在19岁时创办了自己的健身服装公司。)”可知,本文主要讲的是Ben Francis是如何成为亿万富翁的,因此最好的题目是D选项“Francis: From a Pizza Hut delivery guy to a billionaire(弗朗西斯:从必胜客送货员到亿万富翁)”,故选D。
C
D 29. B 30. A 31. C
根据第二段中“At first glance, these statistics look like a tragedy (悲剧). But I am starting to accept the strange idea that maybe they are not. What is changing my mind is technology.(乍一看,这些统计数字看起来像是一场悲剧。但我开始接受这个奇怪的想法,也许他们不是。改变我想法的是科技。)”可知,作者认为在美国学习外语的人数下降了,这是技术的发进步导致的一种积极的发展。故选D。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“I know a foreign language is a window into a new way of understanding the world. But even beyond the fact that this idea has been rather oversold, can we really say the low level of French or Spanish we and our classmates usually picked up in school really gave us a new look into the world and our lives in it (我知道外语是了解世界的一扇窗口。但是,除了这个想法被过分夸大之外,我们真的可以说,我们和我们的同学通常在学校学到的低水平的法语或西班牙语真的让我们对世界和我们的生活有了新的认识吗?)”可推知,作者对学习外语使我们对世界有了新的认识这一观点是持怀疑态度的,故选B。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“And if our goals are more limited and practical --- for instance, getting directions to the bus station in Rome-technology now makes that possible at the press of a button. With a smart phone and an app, foreign languages will no longer present most people with the challenge they once did. (如果我们的目标更加有限和实际——例如,获取到罗马公交车站的方向——现在的技术使得按一个按钮就可以实现这一点。有了智能手机和应用程序,外语将不再像以前那样给大多数人带来挑战。)”可知,从实际目的出发,技术使语言学习的过程更加容易,且更加触手可及。故选A。
根据第三段“I was in Belgium not long ago, and I watched various tourists from different nations use speech translation apps to change their own languages into English and French. The newer ones can even reproduce the tone of the speaker’s voice.(不久前我在比利时,我看到来自不同国家的各种游客使用语音翻译应用程序把他们自己的语言变成英语和法语。较新的甚至可以复制说话者的声调。)”提出一个现象——更多的人使用翻译软件来翻译语言,第四段中“And if our goals are more limited and practical --- for instance, getting directions to the bus station in Rome-technology now makes that possible at the press of a button. With a smart phone and an app, foreign languages will no longer present most people with the challenge they once did. Learning to speak a new language well will be necessary for those who want to engage with (从事) literature or media in the original language, as well as those of us who find pleasure in it just because they are “there”. Strange as that is, it is in its way a kind of progress.(如果我们的目标更加有限和实际——例如,获取到罗马公交车站的方向——现在的技术使得按一个按钮就可以实现这一点。
35. What’s the article mainly about
A. The mosquito group is developing.
B. Ancient male mosquitoes probably fed on blood.
C. The oldest-known mosquito fossils were discovered.
D. Female and male mosquitoes share similar feeding habits now.
A 33. D 34. D 35. B

根据第四段“Before the recent findings and their study, only female mosquitoes were known to feed on blood, which they need for protein to produce their eggs.(在最近的发现和他们的研究之前,人们只知道雌性蚊子以血液为食,它们需要血液提供蛋白质来产卵。)” 故选A。
根据倒数第三段“However, studying the development of this behavior has been challenging due to the lack of insect fossil records.(然而,由于缺乏昆虫化石记录,研究这种行为的发展一直具有挑战性。)”
根据倒数第二段“While reexamining the mosquito fossils last year, Azar found that their unique piercing mouthparts, very similar to those of female mosquitoes today, had been kept well.(在去年重新检查蚊子化石时,Azar发现它们独特的穿孔口器被保存得很好,与今天的雌蚊子非常相似。)”
通读全文,尤其是第一段“A study led by a researcher from the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology has updated the fossil (化石) record of mosquitoes (蚊子) by nearly 30 million years and has discovered that ancient male mosquitoes also fed on blood.(中国科学院南京地质古生物研究所的一名研究人员领导的一项研究将蚊子的化石记录更新了近3000万年,并发现古代雄性蚊子也以血为食。)” 。故选B。

“It’s just an expression, Honey”, her mom replied.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
At lunchtime, Lisa finished her lunch early and had time to go to the library.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“Today I am going to be the early bird,” thought Lisa. She raced through breakfast and hit the road. With each step, Lisa felt a surge of energy and determination, ready to seize the day ahead. Catching the earliest bus in time, she was one of the first kids to enter her classroom. Her teacher reminded her that there were only a few spots left in the Robotics Club, and if she was interested, she needed to sign up right away. Lisa was indeed interested! She wrote her name down in one of the last spaces immediately, her eyes twinkling with merriment.
At lunchtime, Lisa finished her lunch early and had time to go to the library. She browsed through the shelves, searching for a book she had been meant to read. As she immersed herself in the pages, she discovered a whole new world of knowledge and imagination. Today turned out to be pretty awesome. “Wow, it sounds like you had a great day, Lisa,” Her mom said later when Lisa went home and told her all about it at dinnertime. “Just call me the early bird,” said Lisa, with a grin. The early bird indeed caught the worm of opportunity.
