一、阅读回答问题
(2022上·江苏·八年级统考期末)The use of chopsticks has been a part of Chinese food culture. There are some taboos (禁忌) that you must pay great attention to, or you may make mistakes and be laughed at.
First, don’t use chopsticks to hit the side of your bowl or plate to make a lot of noise, because Chinese people think only beggars would do this to beg for meals. Second, when you use chopsticks, don’t use them to point at others, which would be regarded as a bad manner to others. Third, it is thought to be an impolite behavior when you suck (吮吸) the end of a chopstick. People will think you lack family education. Fourth, don’t use chopsticks to pock at (拨弄;捅) every dish without knowing what you want. And last, don’t insert (插入) chopsticks straightly into the bowls or dishes. Chinese people do this only when they burn incense (焚香) for the dead.
Nowadays, chopsticks are used more wisely. For example, you can buy a pair as a gift for your friends or relatives. In Chinese, it reads “Kuaizi”, which means to have sons soon, so a newly-married couple will be happy to accept it as their wedding gift.
An interesting experiment shows that many joints (关节) and muscles are being exercised when you use chopsticks. They certainly make you cleverer, don’t they

In China, many public schools finish classes a few hours before the end of parents’ workday.
So parents can’t work full days or need others to help pick up their children.
To help out working parents, the Ministry of Education(教育部) wants primary and middle schools to close late to make time for working parents. Before parents pick up their children, there should be after-school activities in schools. Teachers can help students with their homework. Students can enjoy their hobbies in groups too. But students can’t have lessons after school.
In Nanjing, there are free after-school activities in all primary schools from 2017. In 2021 the schools change the time from 5:30 p. m. to 6:00 p. m. so that parents can pick up their kids. About 230, 000 children in primary schools do such activities. They are half of all primary school students in the city.
From this spring, Shanghai public schools also change their school hours from ending at 3 p. m. to 4:30 p. m. Teachers work for more hours to look after their students after school. “Teachers take turns to do the activities,” a 5th-grade teacher in Shanghai says, “and usually I look after the students every Wednesday and Friday afternoon.”

Humans (人类) need bees to help grow plants. When these insects visit flowers, they collect pollen (花粉). Without bees moving pollen from one flower to another, many plants can’t grow fruits.
In recent years, scientists have noticed a sharp drop in bee numbers. What has happened In brief (简而言之), the insects have lost their food source. As humans have taken over more and more land for cities, natural areas have disappeared. Take England for example. It has lost about 97 percent of its wildflower fields since World War II.
To help out bees, Britain is building “bee bus stops” across the country. These bus stops look ordinary. But there’s a small garden on each of their roofs (顶部). The gardens are full of flowers. They attract (吸引) bees. Because the soil for these gardens is heavy, gardeners have to take care of them twice a year. Other than that, not much is needed to keep the gardens going.
The idea of bee bus stops isn’t new. Several years ago, the Netherlands (荷兰) turned more than 300 of its bus stops into bee bus stops. This project is working. Bee numbers have grown since these bus stops were put into place, according to research. This is certainly good news for the British government.

In China, many public schools finish classes a few hours before the end of parents’ workday. So parents can’t work full days or need others to help pick up (接) their children.
In 2021 the schools change the time from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. so that parents can pick up their kids. About 230,000 children in primary schools do such activities. They are half of all primary school students in the city.
From this spring, Shanghai public schools also change their school hours from ending at 3 p.m.to 4:30 p.m. Teachers work for more hours to look after their students after school. “Teachers take turns to do the activities,” a 5th-grade teacher in Shanghai says, “and usually I look after the students every Wednesday and Friday afternoon.”

On Saturday afternoon, Anne invited Diana to her house for tea. She prepared some fruitcake, some jam and some of the raspberry cordial in the cupboard. Diana poured herself a glass of raspberry cordial and drank it. She found it tasty and drank two more. Suddenly, she turned pale and then left Green Gables hurriedly.
On Monday, Anne went to see if Diana was feeling better. She soon ran back home with tears rolling down her cheeks. Marilla asked her what had happened. Mrs. Barry said that Anne had sent Diana home drunk on Saturday and never let Diana play with her. Marilla went to the cupboard and then came back to the kitchen with a bottle of wine, trying not to smile. Anne gave Diana wine instead of raspberry cordial by mistake and she didn’t know the difference between the two.
One evening after a few days, while doing homework, Anne saw Diana standing at the door and looked worried. Matthew was home and Marilla had gone to town with the Barrys and Mrs. Lynde. Diana said nervously that her sister Minnie May was sick and their parents were away in town. Anne had looked after many children before and knew what to do. They needed lots of hot water, put the fire on and gave Diana’s sister some medicine. After Matthew came with the doctor, Minnie May was sleeping and Anne explained to the doctor what she had done. Later on, he told Mr. and Mrs. Barry, “That little red-headed girl is very smart. She saved that baby’s life.”

In the days that followed, dear reader, I slowly became friendly with the emperor and his people. They did their best to make me feel at home. I learnt that the name of their country was Lilliput.
The people of Lilliput called me “Man Mountain” and they came to see me. People had to pay to see me and the money made the emperor very rich.
The emperor and his people treated me well and helped me in many ways. They organized language lessons for me. Soon I began to understand people there and communicate with them.
But I was still a prisoner in my temple home and every day I asked the emperor the same question: “Can I please have my freedom ” “You must be patient,” he always answered.
Then one day the emperor gave me the freedom to walk around Lilliput. I was able to explore the land. I was careful not to hurt the people as I walked. Everyone stayed inside and ran to their windows to look at me. I enjoyed looking into the window of the emperor’s beautiful palace to see how he lived.
Everything seemed well and peaceful in Lilliput and I saw no problems for the people there. But I was wrong. One day a good friend, Reldresal, came to see me and told me about a terrible conflict between Lilliput and a country nearby.
“My dear Gulliver,” he said, “please do not think that everything is perfect here in Lilliput. The truth is very different. We are at present fighting against a country called Blefuscu.”

In our daily life, we always put our time into three jars (罐子). These would be the necessary (必要) tasks jar, the voluntary (自愿) tasks jar and the happiness jar.
Every day, we spend time filling the necessary tasks jar. We fill this jar with useful things, like making money, doing housework, buying food and paying bills. We then fill another jar with voluntary tasks. These are things that we do for others, but we may not enjoy them. This jar is filled with tasks like taking children to activities and cooking family meals. Those jars are very important. If we don’t fill them each day, our family won’t run well.
However, we often forget to fill the third jar the happiness jar. This is the jar that we fill with activities that make us happy. Is your happiness jar sometimes empty at the end of the day We all have days like that. Between doing all the necessary and voluntary tasks, time flies by on some days, and before we know it, it is time for bed.
That is why each day we try to fill our happiness jar. Most days, I fill mine by going to the ballroom dance (社交舞) class. Between the music, the dancing and the friendship among the students, I always leave classes more happily than when I entered. Playing music is another way that I fill my happiness jar. This week, I was happy to take part in an orchestra (管弦乐队) practice at my church (教堂). A small group of us met to practice Christmas music for a church service. It was a time of fun, friendship and music making. At the end of the evening, my happiness jar was full.
Consider how to spend your time. Try to find ways to get a balance. At the end of the day, hopefully we’ve done all we can to make sure that we fill our happiness jar.

But students can’t have lessons after school.
In Nanjing, there are free after-school activities in all primary schools from 2017.

They needed lots of hot water, put the fire on and gave Diana’s sister some medicine. After Matthew came with the doctor, Minnie May was sleeping and Anne explained to the doctor what she had done.
