  (2)Which of the following is(not)mentioned
  (3)How many / How much / Where / How / What……
(4)What does the writer think about

1)根据构词法猜测词义;
(2)根据上下文猜测词义;
(3)根据定义或解释猜测词义;
(4)根据同义词、反义词以及对比关系猜测词义;
(1)From the text,it can be inferred that______.
(2)The passage suggests that______.
(3)Which of the following best describes______.
(4)The writer’s attitude towards…is______.
(5)From the text,we learn that______.

(3)The main purpose of this selection is______.
4)The passage suggests that______.
5)Which of the following best states the theme of thepassage

Glenn Cook, principal of Pleasant Ridge Elementary School in Gastonia, North Carolina, came up with an idea to give each student a book on their birthday. With about 900 students attending Pleasant Ridge, it is not an easy task, but Cook says he’s ready to “go big or go home”. He is going to include every student in this project.
“I didn’t have a lot of kids’ books,” said Cook. So I put the idea online, and I wanted to see if any of my trends needed to clean off their bookshelves at home. I was hoping to get maybe 50 books for the first round of birthdays. The number of books Cook received was surprising. “We’re probably getting maybe 500 books,” said Cook. There are so many books taking up space all over his office.
The idea started when Cook attended a professional development event. He asked another principal for advice. This principal told him that at her school, she gave her students a pencil on their birthday.
He wanted to take this idea to the next level, so he began reading himself. He came up with the idea that a principal should share his excitement and love for reading. The goal of giving these books to students is to find a book that’s right for each one, so they can experience the happiness of reading.
Local businesses have joined the project to donate books. Michelle Clear, a parent at Pleasant Ridge, decided to support Cook’s project and offer her store as a book donation center. “Reading just opens up so many ways in kids’ lives,” Clear noted. “Dad! Sandy just drilled out a hole in the fence so Sandy and I can talk!” Daniel spins around.

(2022上·江苏南京·九年级统考期末)By drawing patterns (图案) on the surface of a cup of tea, chabaixi, an ancient Chinese tea trick displayed in a recent TV drama, has become popular for its clear similarity with modern latte art (咖啡拉花艺术). However, ten years ago, this special technique was close to disappearing completely. Zhang Zhifeng, a practitioner of chabaixi, found scenes of chabaixi in the drama aroused great interest among ordinary people.
Chabaixi can create endless patterns such as bamboos and mountains or even calligraphy. There are over a dozen steps, from grinding (碾碎) tea for fine powder, to pouring boiled water, stirring the mixture for thick froth (泡沫), and finally drawing the patterns. It is different from making latte because people use clear water as the object to put into the cup instead of milk. But when the water touches the surface of whipped (搅打起泡沫的) tea, it turns into a white color and disappears in 20 minutes. The process before the drawing is known as the tea-making technique, diancha. The quality of diancha is important to whether patterns can be successfully produced later.
“Chabaixi is one of the countless forms of tea-making techniques in China. The importance of chabaixi is not only that this technique is unique in the world, but also it gives us a window into people’s lifestyle in the Song Dynasty, a period when leisure activities in some ways resemble what we have now.” Zhang said.
Before chabaixi was discovered by TY audiences, the technique was listed as part of China Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2017, after it was recovered by Zhang Zhifeng. He started researching the origins of chabaixi in the 1980s and brought the technique back in 2009 after decades of trials and practice. Zhang spent nearly 30 years studying and researching the origins and making of tea but for him it was all worthwhile.

(2022上·江苏南通·九年级统考期末)Many volunteers have helped the old learn to use smartphones. But for all their goodwill, the service has some weak points. It takes much time and effort, and more importantly, older people can easily forget what they’ve learned and the volunteers have to do the same job time and time again.
Liu Siyuan from Beijing 101 Middle School noticed the problems and tried to solve them with a guidebook. The 16-year-old founded a volunteer group called SilverHair. Its seven members spent around half a year writing a 300-page book called May I Show You How to Use Smartphones.
The group members made a survey of more than 1,000 senior citizens and talked with many in the Home for the Old and found out what the older people care most about with smartphones. “How to use Wechat” hit the top of the list as the app covers many parts of life such as chatting, money transfers (转账)and health code(健康码)checking. These make up one chapter of the book. The other nine chapters include the basic uses of phones, online shopping, using online maps and more. To make the book more friendly to older readers, Liu also made the pages light yellow and the characters big.
“Many senior citizens are resistant to smartphones at first, but they are familiar with books, which can make them more ready to learn,” said Liu. “And besides, they can look in the book any time they need, just like using a dictionary.”
The SilverHair members have printed out 500 copies at their own costs and handed them all out. (2022上·江苏·九年级统考期末)As we walk the “path of life”, we may sometimes wish to be alone with our own thoughts, for quiet moments of reflection(反省)can lead to personal improvement. However, when we want to be alone, we must be careful that we do not always jump into our own world. Social life is also important to all of us.
As we live in social groups, there are many benefits of friendship that we can enjoy. Generally speaking, close friendships have three “fruits”: they may comfort the heart, advise the head and help us achieve the goals we set for ourselves. Through friendship, we can become happier, wiser and more satisfied humans.
The first fruit of friendship is the peace that comes from sharing with friends our joy, sadness, success and failure. Here, friendship has a double advantage—happiness takes on a greater meaning and a trouble shared becomes a trouble halved! Naturally, this kind of openness results from a close friendship. We know that our friends will both respect our feelings and treasure these moments of closeness.
The second fruit of friendship is the better understanding and judgement(评判)that may be achieved through conversations with well-meaning and wise friends. We often find it easier to recognize other people’s weaknesses than our own. As a result, if we are guided only by our own feelings, our judgements might be one-sided. On the other hand, our friends are better able to offer advice on important decisions that we all have to make. This helps make our thoughts clearer and brings us a more thorough(彻底的)understanding of our problems .
The third fruit of friendship is the help that a friend may offer in many different ways. Sometimes a friend is even known as our “second self”. There are so many things in life that can only be achieved with the help of friends. Friends may have many different ideas and skills.
Finally, it should be pointed out that enjoying the company of a crowd is not the same as being with friends. Friends should be carefully chosen and relationships carefully developed. In this way, we can better walk the “path of life” with the comfort, advice and help from our trusted friends.
38.According to the passage, close friendships have a lot of “fruits” EXCEPT ________.

When Rip Van Winkle woke up, it was bright and sunny outside. The strangers on the mountain were gone, and there was no sign that they had ever been there. He began worrying that his wife would get angry because he had spent the whole night asleep on the mountain.
Rip looked for his gun, but all he could find was a rusty (生锈的)old one. He believed that someone must have stolen his gun and replaced it. His dog, Wolf, was nowhere to be found. Strangest of all was that Rip’s beard was, now a foot long. Rip tried to trace down his footsteps, only to find that the features of the landscape had changed. In one video, for example, Boris shared how he had learned the Chinese word “dongxi”, he translated each part separately into “east west”. And he introduced one theory (说法) about how “dongxi” came to mean “things”. He told people that all marketplaces in ancient Chinese cities were set up along a single road that ran from east to west. So when you would say “qu mai dong xi”, you’d be saying, “I’m going to buy things.”
Some other videos show his reading Chinese poems and performing kung fu in Chinese traditional custom, which are quite welcome among his 40,000 followers.
“Many of my followers are learning Chinese,” Boris said. “But sadly, they know little about Chinese culture and the country.”

It was October 1837. Samuel Morse and I, Alfred Vail, sat in our workshop. We were studying how to turn dots (●) and dashes (—) into a message.
Morse’s first idea was to tap out numbers-one tap for “1”, a long tap and two short ones for “12”, and so on. Then he made a big list of words and gave their numbers—“342”meant “train” and so on. But I wasn’t so sure this was the best way. His word book was huge. It would take hours to look up codes (代码). Too slow!
“Why couldn’t the dots and dashes stand for letters instead ” I shared my better idea.
“How could that work ” Morse asked.
“Well, for example, two dots could be ‘D’ instead of ‘2’. There are only 26 letters—why not give each one a dot-and-dash code That way, words could be tapped out directly, letter by letter. Imagine the time saved!”
Morse snorted (哼了一声), really unhappy after all of his work on the word list. Just to try it, I wrote down the letters and gave each letter a tap code. Then I tapped out a message, and Morse deciphered (破译) it. Quickly!
He read out my message: “To tell the truth, I think this saves much time.” He nodded. “Yes, I see your point. Not bad.”
But I’d noticed something else about our code. “That message had a lot of T’s,” I said. “The code for a T is dash-dash dot…I’ll bet I could have done that even faster if T didn’t take so long to tap.”
Ten minutes later I was in the local newspaper office. With the help of a printer, I was soon back with a list of letters in order of how often they are used in English.
“Let it be so! It makes good sense to use the shortest codes for the most common letters. I see E is the favourite, so a single dot for E and a dash for T. To start, a dot-dash for A.” Morse said, patting me heartily on the back. “You impress me! Vail, you’re a genius (天才). ”
I smiled. I wouldn’t say so out loud, but I had to agree with him.

(2022上·江苏南京·九年级校联考期末)As more and more people speak the global languages of English, Chinese, and Spanish, other languages are rapidly disappearing. In fact, half of the 6, 000-7, 000 languages spoken around the world today will likely die out by the next century, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization(UNESCO).
To prevent language loss, scholars (学者) from a number of organizations—UNESCO and National Geographic among them—have been recording dying languages and the cultures for many years.
Mark Turin, a scientist at the Macmillan Center, Yale University, who studies the languages and oral traditions of the Himalayas, is following in that tradition. His recently published book, A Grammar of Thangmi with an Ethnolinguistic Introduction to the Speakers and Their Culture, grows out of his experience living, working, and raising a family in a village in Nepal.
Recording the Thangmi language and culture is just a beginning for Turin. He hopes to include other languages and oral traditions across the Himalayan reaches of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China. But he does not simply record these voices before they disappear.
At the University of Cambridge, Turin discovered a lot of important materials—including photographs, films, tape recordings, and field notes which had remained unstudied and were badly in need of care and protection.
Now, through the two organizations that he has founded—the Digital Himalaya Project and the World Oral Literature Project—Turin has started a campaign to make such documents (文献), found in libraries and stores around the world, not just for scholars but for the younger generations of communities from whom the materials were originally collected. Thanks to digital technology and the Internet, Turin notes, the endangered languages can be saved and reconnected with speech communities.

The British are famous for lots of things: Shakespeare, tea, Big Ben, the changeable weather and poor dancing skills. But when it comes to food, one of their most famous dishes is, without doubt, fish and chips.
The best place to go for your fish and chips is a fish and chips shop. The people who work there are often the owners of the shops, usually a husband and a wife, with part-time help from others. One of the most famous fish and chips shops is Harry Ramsden ‘s, which is based in the north of England.
Ordering fish and chips can be difficult for a tourist in Britain. For a start, you’ll probably be in an area of Britain that has few tourists, with locals who are not used to speaking to foreigners. Just smile politely and say, “A portion of fish and chips to take away, please. “ When you see them with a vinegar(醋) bottle, quickly shout “Just a bit, please”. So they don’t drown(浸泡) your chips in vinegar. If you see them wrapping(包裹) your fish and chips in newspaper, don’t be surprised. It’s nothing special.
So, why are fish and chips so popular in Britain People have been trying to answer this question for a long time. After all, fish and chips are eaten by everyone in Britain, from ladies in fur coats to workers in blue overalls. Some say it’s the smell of delicious fried fish and potatoes. Others say it’s the taste — the mix of fried fish, fried potatoes, vinegar and salt. Some say it’s the comforting feeling that you get from carrying that bag of warm food home on a cold winter day. And others say it’s simply because a meal of fish and chips offers the most useful way of filling you up for such little money.
The strange thing about fish and chips is that the British in general don’t like seafood. For them, it’s something alien. They don’t like its shape (too many heads and eyes), its smell (too fishy), all the bones (too difficult to eat) and the funny-looking arms and legs (too strange). This probably explains why fried fish is so popular. Since the fish has been covered in batter (面糊) and fried, it looks nothing like anything that ever lived in the sea. So, are you having some fish and chips

I suppose it seemed natural for me to perform for family and friends and I certainly wasn’t shy while growing up. I actually used to enjoy the attention and I still have many enjoyable memories of the whole family singing and dancing together.
That’s why it came as no surprise that I started going to drama school from the young age of six. I attended classes there every Saturday for almost 10 years. We were taught how to sing and dance, as well as act, so I was quite good by my teens.

Reading can open a world of joy for students, and one North Carolina principal wants to spread that moment of happiness to them on their birthday.
Hopefully, this will get across the nation to call on more people to donate books.

The woman says, “You wait right here. I’ll be right back.”
She returns with a saw(锯子). There’s a whirring. A circle in the wooden fence drops out of sight.
“Dad! Sandy just drilled out a hole in the fence so Sandy and I can talk!” Daniel spins around.
I hadn’t known her name was Sandy. We’ve lived here a month before Daniel was born.
Daniel’s and Sandy’s murmuring voices continue. Whenever Daniel is outside, he circles near the fence that isn’t a fence any more. Some days my son just goes to stand at the hole, yelling, “Sandy! Saaaaandyyyyy!” Sometimes I hear bits of their talk.
“We painted a ghost at school.”
Or: ‘‘Wheeler and Jackson were playing football, and they told me I couldn’t play.”
“That wasn’t very nice,” says Sandy. “Did that hurt your feelings Did you let them know that ”
I can’t hear how he replies. A moment of envy runs through me. He never talks about his school things with me.
Daniel and Sandy not only keep chatting through the hole, they also exchange gifts.
A coloring book, then a Hot Wheels car. It’s unclear what Daniel gives Sandy in return.

A month later, Sandy leaves to care for her mother in Kansas. She left behind a box of presents: a coloring book, sidewalk chalk, the missing orange part in the Hot Wheels track. When I look at Daniel, he’s looking down at his shoes. He sometimes wanders down to the fence. Instead of calling “Sandy! Saaaaandyyyyy!” he cries. “Hello! Helloooooo!”

He started researching the origins of chabaixi in the 1980s and brought the technique back in 2009 after decades of trials and practice. But something felt off to dispatcher Tim Teneyck of Oregon, Ohio, when a woman called to order a pizza on November 13. He told her she had the wrong number, only to quickly realize this had been no mistake on her part. In a recording of the call, we can hear them both on the line “You called 911 to order a pizza ” Tim asked, “This is the wrong number to call for a pizza.” “No no, no…you’re not understanding,” the woman said.
When the woman replied with her apartment information, everything became clear. She didn’t want a pizza at all, she needed help. But she couldn’t tell him that directly because she wasn’t in a safe place.
While Tim has never received a call like hers in his 14 years of service, he understood her message. After a few more questions, he said, “I’m getting you now. ” As it turned out, the woman was in an apartment with a man who was physically hurting her mother. She knew he would run away if he discovered she was calling 911, so she pretended to order a pizza instead. When Tim sent officers her way, he had them turn off their sirens (警报器) before they arrived.
The officers arrested (逮捕) 56-year-old Simon Lopez who was charged with domestic violence (被控家暴).
Oregon Police Chief Michael Navarre said they couldn’t have helped this woman without Tim’s help.

(2022上·江苏南京·九年级统考期末)Boris, a foreign student at Communication University of China, often shares his experiences of Chinese culture on his vlog (视频博客).
Like many foreigners, Boris once believed that all Chinese could perform kung fu, flying onto roofs and walking over walls. He thought the country was not that developed. But after he got a scholarship (奖学金) to study in China in 2019, his view changed. “China has entered a new period, but many people’s impressions of China are still stuck in the 1970s,” Boris said. “That’s why I started to shoot vlogs to share Chinese culture in 2019.”
Until now, Boris has posted more than 40 Chinese culture vlogs online. But making these vlogs is not easy. Take reading the poem Second Farewell to Cambridge by Xu Zhimo as an example.
“I can understand and read every word in the poem,” Boris said. “But to touch readers, I need to use proper feelings while reading.” So he needed to look for much background information and make his feelings suit each part of the poem.
Though shooting these vlogs takes lots of time, the young man feels proud that his vlogs have inspired many people. Boris said that he wanted to continue bridging the differences between two cultures. “This goal may not be achieved easily, but I will spare no efforts to do my part.”
54.Through the vlogs, Boris mainly wants to ________.

55.Boris’s experience of learning “dongxi” is an example of learning Chinese by ________.
A.translating it as a whole

56.What inspired Boris to shoot vlogs

D.A chance to be a successful vlogger.
57.Why is the poem Second Farewell to Cambridge is mentioned to

“Well, for example, two dot
