The stories in The Ice Cream Machine have the same title, but they each have a different plot(情节) about ice cream. One ice-cream story is about a boy and his robot in the future. Another is about a father and daughter who create an ice-cream machine. My favorite story in the book is about two sisters, Pam and Penelope, who try to enter an ice-cream-eating competition. As well as the stories above, there are four more stories in the books.
Its writer, Adam Rubin, has a lot of experience when it comes to writing about food. His most famous children’s book is Dragons Love Tacos. “I like to write about food because it’s loved by people of all different cultures,” Rubin says. “It’s something we all have something to do with.”
Rubin hopes The Ice Cream Machine inspires kids to write. Its jacket(护封)turns into an envelope in which readers can send him their stories. Rubin says writers should write about things they like. “If you’re trying to write to please someone else, you might not get it right. Then no one’s happy,” he says.
I recommend The Ice Cream Machine to anyone who likes creative and fun storytelling. The book goes down just like ice cream: smooth, enjoyable, and with a pleasant aftertaste(回味).
1.How many stories are there in all in the book
2.Why does the Rubin write about food
3.Do you think the book is worth reading Why

Growing up is not always easy. When we face difficulties, a spirit of depending on yourself is more useful than crying for help. That’s what Hong Zhanghui’s story of growing from boy to man with family suffering tells us.
Hong was born in 1982 in a poor family in Xibua County, Henan Province. When he was only 11, his father became badly ill and one day he came back with an abandoned baby girl. A year later Hong’s mother left home. She no longer wanted to live such a poor life and face her sick husband. So everything hard fell onto the young boy’s shoulders: to take care of his father and the sister Chenchen, and to go on to study.
Although his life was hard, Hong didn’t go away from his father and sister. He worked in part-time jobs to feed his family. He climbed tall trees to get bird’s eggs for his sister. He walked two hours at weekends to the market to buy different things to sell around his school. A few years later, he studied at a college. To take care of Chenchen, he worked hard to hire a room near his college for her and sent her to school.
After Hong’s story went public, he became a hero in people’s eyes. But Hong refused offers from others. He said he felt encouraged by kind offers, but he could depend on his own work.
Hong’s story shows that with love and willpower, no hardship can knock a person down but himself.
So when facing difficulties, don’t complain about bad luck. Consider what more you could do for your family and society and you’ll find the world smiling back.

The world’s animal populations(种群)have reduced by more than two thirds since 1970, according to a recent research from the World Wildlife Fund(WWF).
The London group provided information on 32, 000 wildlife populations which included more than 5, 000 species. The researchers(研究人员)found that group sizes had gone down by 69 percent in average(平均). They said the loss of forests, human development of the environment, pollution, and climate change were great causes of the loss. Land-use change is still the most dangerous to wildlife. However, the researchers added, “If we cannot limit warming to 1.5℃, climate change was likely to become the main cause of biodiversity loss in the coming years.”
Wildlife populations in Latin American and the Caribbean Sea area were greatly influenced. The study showed a 94 percent drop in those areas in over 50 years. Wildlife populations in river and lake habitats(栖息地)went down the most. Freshwater populations have gone down by an average of 83 percent since 1970. For example, one population of pink river dolphins in the Amazon River area of Brazil fell by 65 percent between 1994 and 2016.
The findings are a warning of a larger system problem. If the number of one species(物种)goes down, there will be a bad influence on others. The situation will make the ecosystem(生态系统)worse. Humans depend on a proper climate, suitable weather conditions, better farmland and fisheries(渔业)to develop. However, now the problems are serious enough to threaten(威胁)many systems to last normally.
Our future depends on preventing the loss of nature, just as it depends on the climate change. Everyone, from oneself to companies and to governments, should play an important role to improve the situation. If nothing is done, the numbers of the wild animals will be smaller and even none left. And at last, the problem will threaten the ecosystems on which we depend.
19.What is the most dangerous to wildlife populations now
20.Why will the ecosystem be worse
21.What does the writer tell us to do according to the passage
22.How does the writer explain the falling of freshwater wildlife
23.What should we do since the environment will make the ecosystem worse (请自拟一句话作答)

Riding a Mobike on the street, you might hear some people speaking Chinese aloud. Turning to the right, you might see a Sichuan-style restaurant. After walking into a store, you might see that Huawei smartphones are on sale. But you’re not in China—you’re in Manchester in Britain. In fact, you might see similar things in many other cities. Chinese products(产品)have been going all over the world.
Chinese food became popular in Western countries hundreds of years ago. To meet local people’s tastes, Chinese restaurants make some changes to the dishes. “One example is the meat.” said Yin Hang, a Chinese student who is studying in Australia. “We like to eat meat with the bone in, but people here don’t. So the local Chinese restaurants provide big pieces of meat without bones, even for fish. “
Some Chinese brands(品牌)are also becoming more popular. It is reported that in many cities in Europe, many stores sell TCL televisions, Haier fridges and Lenovo computers. More than half of US-owned drones(无人机)are Chinese models, according to China Daily. They’re not only made in China, but also designed and developed in the country.
In the past, most Western people thought Chinese products were cheap and not so good. But now, things have changed greatly. More people trust Chinese brands. “Made in China” becomes cool. “They are beautiful and offer something special that American phones don’t have,” an article on CNN once said about Chinese smartphones.
As it is said, Chinese government has been trying its best to improve its national brands of all kinds to meet the needs of modern life.

(2022上·江苏扬州·九年级统考期末)Beijing Opera is one of the traditional Chinese drama art forms with a history of more than 200 years. It is said that Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty loved the theatre. At the beginning, there was no Beijing Opera. Kunqu Opera was the most popular, but Emperor Qianlong gradually became bored with this style. Various local operas were brought to Beijing to please the emperor. Drawing on the good points of these local operas, the new Beijing Opera came into being and became Qianlong’s favorite.
Beijing Opera mixes different art forms, including singing, dancing, acrobatics and Wushu. All these art forms are put into one performance. Facial painting (脸谱) is one of the most important signs of Peking Opera. It shows the roles’ personalities. For example, a red face usually shows the role’s bravery; a white face shows the treachery and guile; a black face shows the role is a strict man.
Beijing Opera has spread to many other places. Mei Lanfang, a famous performer, was the first to introduce Beijing Opera to foreigners and made highly successful tours to foreign countries.
“You will doubt and sometimes be a little bored, but you will be interested gradually. You will be strongly attracted to Beijing Opera, even if you know nothing about the drama background.” This is how one traveler described his first experience in watching Beijing Opera.

(2022上·江苏盐城·九年级景山中学校考期末)Police dogs are given special training to help the police with their work. Many different types of dogs can be trained to do this work, but the best known ones are German shepherds and bloodhounds. In Britain, police dogs usually have a 13-week training course and many dogs fail. Not all dogs make good police dogs. They must be completely reliable and obedient. Most police dogs live with their handlers as part of the family, but they are not pets. They are working dogs and they have a job to do.
Police dogs are trained to chase and hold people who are trying to get away from the police. Police dogs are not vicious animals. They are trained to hold on to people until their handler tells them to let go.
Police dogs often go into dangerous places and they are given special vests to protect them from knife and gun attacks.
Dogs are not only trained to chase and catch criminals. They are also used for following suspects or finding missing people. This is because some dogs, such as bloodhounds, have a very good sense of smell and can be trained to recognize certain types of smells. Some dogs are used to find survivors after earthquakes or explosions and some are specially trained to find dead bodies.
In many countries dogs are used in airports to check luggage for drugs and bombs. Labradors, spaniels and beagles are used for this because they are friendly dogs and people are not afraid of them.

In February 2021, Beijing announced the 26 venues (比赛场地) for the Winter Olympics. Some of them were built for the 2008 Summer Games. And all the 26 venues would use totally renewable (可再生的) energy.
In 2018, Chinese athletes took part in only half of the 102 events at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, the Republic of Korea (韩国平昌). So Chinese athletes’ first goal (目标) is to qualify (取得参赛资格) for all the events of the 2022 Winter Games. And by 2019, China had about 3,300 athletes training in the national team—11 times more than the last time.
As the 2008 Summer Olympics, the opening ceremony (开幕式) of the 2022 Winter Games will be held at the “Bird’s Nest” in Beijing. This summer, the Tokyo Olympics were held largely behind closed doors. “If you are not fat, you must be a thin man.”
“For every minute of breathing, 60 seconds pass.”
“Why do you say I am lazy In fact, I didn’t do anything.”
Nonsense(废话) Yes. These sentences look like they make sense, but they actually express no useful information. They are part of a recent Internet sentence-making craze(热潮).
“Nonsense literature” was originally invented by Internet users to make fun of the empty, and redundant(累赘的)writing style often used by media and some widely known people. Like any good Internet joke, I don’t know what to say. “Listening to your words is like listening to words.”
Some even said that famous writers like Lu Xun used the style. For example, they said, Lu Xun once wrote:There are two trees in my backyard. One is jujube tree, and the other is also a jujube tree.
Is it true Not really. Repetition in writing is not necessarily “nonsense literature”. Lu Xun’s writing on the jujube tree comes from a piece of his prose. If you have read it, as well as understanding his time of writing, you’d find these repeated lines are powerful, showing that the writer was frustrated because of social reality.
Actually, “nonsense” and “ literature” are two incompatible words. Nonsense is silly and useless. It will soon be forgotten. But literature is written work considered to have artistic value. It is a spiritual treasure worth passing down.
Internet crazes like “nonsense literature” might make you laugh for a while. But they will soon disappear. Don’t throw yourself into it. Read some real literature. It will helps us stop talking nonsense.

Cycling on city roads, surfing on the land, playing frisbee (飞盘) with a group of people…Urban (城市的) sports are becoming popular and are bringing more fun to us.
According to a study with over 1, 200 young people, more than 93 percent of young people are interested in urban sports. Instead of just keeping fit, young people pick them up to socialize (社交). Groups of players have online group chats, talking about the sport or simply sharing their lives.
The pandemic plays a role in it too. Because of the pandemic, people may choose sports that can be played at places around them. They also have a stronger love for outdoor activities and healthier lifestyles.
The new sports are also good for taking photos and are less limited by places. People can enjoy new sports at many places in the city, from parks to sidewalks. (2022上·江苏泰州·九年级校考期末)The Sydney Opera House is one of the most famous landmarks(地标) in Australia. This summer holiday, I got the chance to visit it and find out what makes this building so great.
As our guide told us, the Sydney Opera House was built with a kind of self-cleaning material that is very rare even today.
First, we visited the Drama Hall. We learned about the designer of the Sydney Opera House—Danish architect(建筑师) Jorn Utzon. He was the winner of an international design competition. However, he designed the building according to his own tastes, which caused several problems. The project was completed 10 years late. The cost of construction(建造) was over budget(预算). Utzon didn’t get to see it after it was built.
Then, we visited Joan Sutherland Theatre. The theater was refurbished(翻新) in 2017 with new high-tech equipment. There was a rehearsal(排练) that day, so we could hear the beautiful sound of the orchestra(管弦乐队). Finally, we arrived at the largest theater—Concert Hall. It has hosted many kinds of performances, from classical to rock music. A few years ago, a sports event was even held there.
Before we finished the tour, the guide told us the rest of Utzon’s story. In 1966, Utzon had an argument with the government and refused to give in. He had to leave the country. It was a hard time in his life. But many years later, people understood him and saw the building as a masterpiece(杰作).

Run-down buildings, rotted doors, rusty (生锈的) machines... this is how you might picture an old industrial site. But many of them now have a new look in China.
Shougang Industrial Park in Shijingshan district of Beijing is now a famous and popular culture and sports site. However, it used to be a steel mill that was built in 1919. It once housed 60,000 workers and made more than 10 million tons of iron and steel. To protect the environment, however, the mill slowly reduced its production from 2005 until it closed in 2010.
With the government’s support, the old mill has been reborn. Cafes, bookstores, hotels, and offices now fill Shougang’s warehouses and blast furnaces (高炉). Self-driving cars move around the place for testing. And during the 2022 Winter Games, Olympic athletes flew down the Big Air Ramp, which is now in front of Shougang’s former (之前的) cooling towers.
Xu Zhaolin, from Beijing, visits the industrial park a lot. “It’s hard to imagine that the park was a steel mill in the past,” said the 24-year-old. “It feels like you’ve come into a sci-fi game. The photos I took there look like cyberpunk (赛博朋克)!”
Like Shougang Industrial Park, in recent years, many old factories and mills have been turned into cultural and tourist sites. For example, the World of Tsingtao is a beer museum inside the old factory of the Tsingtao Brewery (啤酒厂), one of China’s largest breweries. The museum has brought people closer to the long history of the brewery. Today, China is home to 194 national-level industrial heritage (遗产) sites.
Old factories and workshops across the country are like a book on the history of Chinese manufacturing (制造业). Giving new life to them through protection and development is important for driving cities’ innovation and development, noted People’s Daily.
67.What did Shougang Industrial Park use to be
68.Why did Shougang close in 2010
69.How did Shougang have a new look according to the passage

Remember when you were a little child trying to learn to walk
First, you had to learn how to balance yourself and stand. You fell down, and then got back up. You laughed sometimes and cried at other times. After much practice, you finally learned how to balance yourself. You got much pleasure from this new feeling of power-you’d stand everywhere you could. It was a happy time-you did it!
Now, the next step-walking. You’d seen others do it. It didn’t look that hard-just move your legs while you were standing. Wrong-more difficult than you ever imagined. But after you tried again and again, you understood how to walk.
If people around you found you walking, they cheered, “Oh, look at what the kid is doing.” This encouraged you! But look back on those days when you were the little child-how many times did you try when no one was watching, or when no one was cheering You couldn’t wait for someone to encourage you to take the next steps. You learned how to encourage yourself.
So, keep trying and encouraging yourself as you learned to walk if you want to succeed in doing something.

Here is some “breaking” news: the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has added breaking into the 2024 Paris Olympic Games!
Breaking might be one of the very strange sports to be added to the Games, as it’s often seen as more of an art form than a sport.
The dance style first appeared on the streets of New York in the 1970s. In the 1980s, breaking swept around the world when it was adopted (采用) by pop stars such as Michael Jackson. Young people worldwide were crazy about such kind of dance style.
Over the past few years, there has been a talk that the Olympic Games have become less interesting to young people. The IOC is trying to make the Games more “youthful”, with sports that young people do in their spare time. “We want to take sport to the youth.” said IOC President Thomas Bach.
To be added to the Olympics, a sport must be practised by men in at least 75 countries on four continents (洲) and by women in no fewer than 40 countries on three continents. Also, it should be competitive and requires training just like other sports. Dancers need to have strong upper body and core strength. “It’s great that it gives us more recognition as a sport,” said British break dancer Karam .

The pirates did not return. It was very hot and unpleasant inside the fort. I had a plan and I needed to leave the fort.
First I ran down to the white rocks and looked for Ben Gunn’s boat. I soon found it under some bushes. As soon as it was dark, I got into the boat and rowed out to the Hispaniola. I found the rope that connected the ship to the anchor and cut through it with my knife until the ship was free.
As I did this, I could hear the angry voices of Israel Hands and another mutineer in a cabin above me.
The ship began to move away in the night air.
By then I was so tired that I fell asleep in the boat when I awoke I found myself at the southwest end of Treasure Island.
I moved slowly to the next bay, and suddenly I saw the Hispaniola in front of me. The wind and the currents were moving the ship. I couldn’t see anyone on it. As soon as I was close enough, I grabbed a rope and climbed onboard.
I soon saw two pirates lying on the deck at the back of the ship. One was dead. The other, Israel Hands, was injured and calling for rum.
I drank the water and give Hands the rum. As he drank it, the color returned to his cheeks.
“I’m taking over this ship, Mr Hands,” I said. “You will treat me as your captain.”
“I imagine,” said Hands, “you want to get ashore. Now you need my help. Give me some food and drink, and something to tie up my wound. Then I’ll tell you how to sail the ship. That’s fair, isn’t it ”
“I want to get to North Inlet.”
Hands agreed to help me. We soon arrived at the North Inlet. Hands was very good at guiding me in and I followed his instructions perfectly. I was working hard on bringing the ship in safely and forgot to watch Hands. When I turned around Hands was standing behind me, his knife ready...

(2022上·江苏·九年级统考期末)阅读与回答问题
【答案】19.Land-use change. 20.Because the number of one species goes down. 21.Everyone, from oneself to companies and to governments, should take action to improve the situation. 22.By listing numbers. 23.We should do what we can to protect the environment, for example, stop fishing.
【导语】本文介绍了野生物种数量减少的原因以及应该采取的措施。
19.根据“Land-use change is still the most dangerous to wildlife”可知土地利用的变化对野生动物来说仍然是最危险的。故填Land-use change.
20.根据“If the number of one species(物种)goes down, there will be a bad influence on others. The situation will make the ecosystem(生态系统)worse.”可知生态系统变得更糟是因为一个物种数量下降。故填Because the number of one species goes down.
21.根据“Our future depends on preventing the loss of nature, just as it depends on the climate change. Everyone, from oneself to companies and to governments, should play an important role to improve the situation.”可知作者告诉我们每个人,从自己到公司再到政府,都应该发挥重要作用改善环境。故填Everyone, from oneself to companies and to governments, should take action to improve the situation.

Beijing Opera mixes different art forms, including singing, dancing, acrobatics and Wushu. All these art forms are put into one performance. Facial painting (脸谱) is one of the most important signs of Peking Opera. It shows the roles’ personalities.

(2022上·江苏南通·九年级统考期末)请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。

To be added to the Olympics, a sport must be practised by men in at least 75 countries on four continents (洲) and by women in no fewer than 40 countries on three continents.
