(2023上·上海徐汇·八年级位育中学校考校考)Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题).
In the1800s, the steam locomotive (蒸汽火车头) was considered by many to be a symbol of the new Industrial Age. It was, in fact, one of the most important inventions of the time. Over the years, there have been many changes to the locomotive. One of the most important has been its source of power.
The first railroads used horses for power, but the development of the steam locomotive made railroads a practical way of transportation. The first steam locomotive was built in 1804 in Britain by Richard Trevithick. It could pull 50,000 pounds, but it was not very successful because it was so heavy that it caused the rails to fall apart. However, it encouraged other engineers to try to build steam locomotives. Two of the most important men to accept the challenge were George Stephenson and his son, Robert. Robert once won a contest to build the best locomotive. The Rocket, as he called it, had an average speed of 20 miles per hour, and the top speed was 29 miles per hour.
In America, developments in steam engines were close behind those of the British. In 1830, Peter Cooper’s tiny locomotive, called Tom Thumb, lost a famous race against a horse-drawn coach. Although Peter Copper failed, it still made railroad officials believe that steam power was more practical than horse power.
Just before the turn of the century, the electric locomotive became widely in use. Its most successful period was the 1940s when U.S. railroads had 2,400 miles of electric routes.
The diesel (柴油) locomotive was invented in the 1890s by Rudolf Diesel, a German engineer. The power of this locomotive came from a diesel fuel engine. The diesel locomotive is still in use today. It costs about twice as much as a steam locomotive to build but it is much cheaper to operate.
1.The steam locomotive was one of the most important inventions in the 1800s, wasn’t it
2.Who built the first steam locomotive

(2023上·上海浦东新·八年级校联考校考)Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答问题)
Once again, my experiment had refused to work. I felt hopeless. A few months earlier, when I started the project, I was confident. I believed I could make it if I worked hard enough. So I spent over 10 hours in the lab every day. When the experiment failed, I simply worked harder. Yet here I was, working harder than ever—but not getting anywhere. I didn’t know what to do.
It was late in the evening. One other person was still in the lab, and he noticed my worried look. He came over and asked how I was doing. I told him about my problems. After we talked through the experiment, he said, “I think it’s time to go home and get some sleep.” “Taking a break is also hard work, you know,” he added with a smile.
Those words opened my eyes. I no longer overworked myself in the lab. I felt less stressed (有压力的) and my research started to progress (进展).
A few years later, my professor and I were discussing an age-old problem at a cafe. As he finished his coffee, he said, “We need to work smarter, not harder.” I felt kind of surprised. I had never heard my professor say anything like this.
Our conversation that day helps me understand that exciting ideas seldom come from a mind under pressure. My best ideas always come after I have allowed my mind to relax—whether that’s cooking a nice dinner or going on long hikes with my brother.

Have you heard about “Survival (生存) Holidays” “Survival Holidays” is for children to go into the lonely place for exciting activities.
Now about 1,100 companies are allowed to take children into the great outdoors without their parents. The reason why people like “Survival Holidays” is that they think being close to nature is good for children. (2022上·上海金山·八年级校联考期末)More than 50,000,000 people live in the rainforests of the world and most of them do not hurt the forest they live in. They eat the fruits that grow on the forest trees, but they do not cut them down. They kill some animals to eat, but they do not destroy them.
When we cut down the rainforests, we destroy these forest people, too. In 1900, there were 1,000,000 forest people in the Amazon forest. In 1980, there were only 200,000.
The Yanomami people live along the rivers of the rainforest in the north of Brazil. They have lived in the rainforest for about 10,000 years and they use more than 2,000 different plants for food and for medicine. But in 1988, someone found gold in their forest, and suddenly 45,000 people came to the forest and began looking for gold. They cut down the forest to make roads. They made more than a hundred airports. The Yanomami lost land and food. Many died because new diseases came to the forest with the strangers.
The Yanomami people tried to save their forest, because it was their home. But the people who wanted gold were stronger.
Many forest people try to save their forests. Chico Mendes was famous in Brazil because he wanted to keep the forest for his people. In December 1988, people who wanted to cut down the forest killed Chico Mendes.

(2022上·上海浦东新·八年级上海市实验学校校考校考)Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题)
English has become part of our daily lives. Many people think it’s fashionable to use a few English words when talking in Chinese. However, some people don’t agree with this. Have you experienced this way of speaking Do you agree with it
Tian Shuhui, a boy, 16
When I watch some TV shows, I sometimes find some people who speak Chinese mixed with some English words. For example, they say some key words like “presentation” or “GDP”. In this case, English words are more suitable than Chinese ones. The use of both English and Chinese shows that speakers have a high understanding of English.
Liu Haihang, a boy, 16
I agree with the new way of speaking. On one hand, as the world develops more and more rapidly, we have the duty to connect with each other. English plays a key role in the process. On the other hand, using a few English words in Chinese sentences doesn’t mean that we are not showing respect to our culture. We should take an open attitude to this phenomenon(现象).
Ren Yizhong, a girl, 16
I don’t think it’s good for our culture. Chinese, one of the most ancient languages, reflects our history. The structure and meaning of Chinese words clearly show our country’s values and the intelligence of our ancient people. No matter how fashionable it is, using English words when talking in Chinese is not respectful to such an ancient civilization(文明).
Li Jingyang, a girl, 17
Some may find it fashionable, but I really don’t agree with it. First, we ought to protect our own culture and language. We shouldn’t let English or other foreign languages influence our language. Second, mixing English words into a Chinese sentence doesn’t mean your English is good. The wise choice is to show your respect to Chinese, and speak English only when you have to.
34.Does Tian Shuhui agree with the idea of using English words when speaking Chinese
.
35.According to Liu Haihang, what is good about this new way of speaking
It enables us .
36.What does “phenomenon” stand for in paragraph 3
.
37.Why does Ren Yizhong think using English words when speaking Chinese is bad for our culture
.
38.How can we protect our culture and language according to Li Jingyang
.
39.What do you think of the new way of speaking Why
.
【答案】34.Yes, he does 35.to connect with each other 36.Using a few English words in Chinese sentences 37.Because the structure and meaning of Chinese words clearly show our country’s values and the intelligence of our ancient people 38.By showing our respect to our Chinese and speaking English when we have to 39.I think it is nice because it makes us have a good command of English words
【导语】本文介绍了四位同学发表了自己对“在用汉语交谈时使用几个英语单词”这一现象的不同看法。
34.根据“In this case, English words are more suitable than Chinese ones. The use of both English and Chinese shows that speakers have a high understanding of English.”可知,在这种情况下,英语单词比汉语单词更合适。英语和汉语的使用表明说话者对英语有很高的理解。由此可知,Tian Shuhui同意在说汉语时使用英语单词,应作肯定回答。根据“Tian Shuhui, a boy”可知,Tian Shuhui是一个男孩,人称代词应用he。故填Yes, he does。
35.根据“On one hand, as the world develops more and more rapidly, we have the duty to connect with each other.”可知,一方面,随着世界发展越来越快,我们有责任相互联系。由此可知,这种新的说话方式的好处之一是它能让我们相互联系。enable sb to do sth表示“让某人能做某事”。故填to connect with each other。
36.根据“On the other hand, using a few English words in Chinese sentences doesn’t mean that we are not showing respect to our culture. Large Internet companies such as Google and Microsoft have thousands of computers. As these computers work out problems, they produce lots of heat, so they need huge cooling systems. These systems send the heat into the air.
A company in Holland thinks paying to make the computers work and then paying again to cool them are a waste of energy. So the company developed a special device—the e-Radiator.
Boaz Leupe, head of the company, says the e-Radiator works as a heating system and saves money. He explains that the energy is used twice—once to heat the home and once to cool the computers and that the users don’t have to pay to cool their computers.
Five homeowners in Holland are testing the heating system in their homes.
“We pay for the computer using, so in that way, homeowners get heating for free,” Boaz says.
Jan Visser is one of the homeowners. “If you use the computer more, the e-Radiator produces more heat,” he says, “it can’t provide enough heat if you don’t use your computer often.” But he is ready to try it. It’s a great help for his family.

Just like us, trees change a lot as they grow. At 1 to 3 years old, young trees learn how to protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns(刺) to warn animals not to go near. Most young trees have large, deep green leaves so that they can catch enough sunlight and change it into their food and energy.
When trees are 4 years old, they begin to grow every rapidly and become strong enough to face challenges later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults. They grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit. It is not until the tree is 20 to 25 years old that it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. Not only does the adult tree give us shade, oxygen and natural beauty; it is also a great place for a tree house, or a place for us to nap, read a book, listen to music or sip tea. If the adult tree receives proper care, it will continue to live healthily for many years.
Gradually(渐渐地), trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, they still have their important place in nature. We went to an animal shelter to adopt (收养) a puppy, but in reality, it was the puppy who adopted us. As we looked into the cage, a small, three-month-old beagle (小猎兔狗) puppy began wagging her tail. She seemed to say, “Oh, you’re the family I’ve been looking for!” And for the next fifteen years, Pudding (we named her Pudding because she was as sweet as a pudding dessert) became part of our family.
Pet ownership has always been popular in Western countries. Now, China is also discovering its love for cats and dogs. It now ranks No.3 in the world for pet ownership. The pet industry, which sells food and toys as well as grooming (刷洗梳毛) and vet services, is one of the country’s fastest-growing industries.
Pets bring a lot of joy to your home, but they are also a big duty. Pets are not toys. You cannot put them away when you are tired of playing with them. Dogs, in particular, need to be trained to behave properly and they need exercise. Even in bad weather, you have to take them for walks or for a run in the park. And, while you are training your dog, your dog is also training you to think about others and care about others, not just about yourself.
Pudding was my best friend when I was growing up. We sat together on the sofa and watched television. She kept me company when I was doing my homework. And when I came home, she was always there to greet me, leaping up and barking and wagging her tail.

One of their goals is to win games, and the other goal is to build character. Character is what a person is made up of on the inside. It is how a person gets along with others. One of the reasons that schools have sports teams is to help build good values.
There are many character traits (特质) that are developed through being on a football team. One of those traits is leadership. The quarterback (四分卫) is the leader of the team because he makes important decisions for the team. The quarterback has to inspire the rest of the team to work together. That is what it means to be a leader.
There is also a defensive leader. When the defense is playing, their leader helps inspire them to make big plays and work together as a team. Keeping the other team from scoring is a big job, so it’s important for the defense to work hard.
Working together as a team means cooperating with each other and making good decisions. It also means encouraging others on the team when they are not having a good game or practice. If one teammate is not working hard or following the rules, the entire team will suffer.
Whether a football team wins or loses, it is important to congratulate the other team after the game. That is called sportsmanship, and it is also a character trait. Being on a team teaches good sportsmanship, and that will help in other areas of life as well.
Learning to work together and support teammates are important values to have. Being a good teammate doesn’t have to mean just on the playing field; it can also mean at home with family members, in the classroom with fellow students or in the workplace with colleagues. This is one reason schools continue to make sports teams available to students when they are young.

SEVEN-YEAR-OLD Ryan, a Chinese-American boy, spends his days in primary school and his evenings as an online celebrity. Ryan is a toy tester who unboxes new toys and shares his opinion with millions of his followers on his YouTube channel, “RyanToysReview.” Last year, the cute, bubbly (活泼的) — and enterprising (有创业精神的) — kid made $11 million.
Ryan is just one of the many thousands of young people who have discovered that the internet and its various platforms can provide plenty of money-making opportunities. All that is needed is a good idea and an internet connection.
Young Chinese are also being drawn to the internet as a possible career, or as an easy way to make a lot of money. In 2017, a survey of 13,000 Chinese college students found that 54% wanted to become internet celebrities. No doubt they see it as a good alternative to spending their lives working in an office cubicle (小隔间), but becoming an online celebrity isn’t as easy or as profitable as it may seem. According to the same survey, 80% of aspiring (有抱负的) online celebrities can’t make enough money to support themselves, and 15% make only a modest white-collar salary. That means you have to be one of the lucky or talented 5% to become rich and famous.
Zhang Kaiyi is one of the 5%. She started posting video clips (短视频) in 2017 and quickly attracted 4.8 million followers on Weibo. Zhang says, “It is content that can create value, and it is also content that can possibly reshape business.” Zhang’s advice was to keep your content fun, life-oriented, creative and positive.
What you also need is good communication skills and a good education. Most of the online celebrities you see have at least a college degree. They are smart, creative people. They also have good communication skills which enable them to connect with their audiences. Such things as eye contact and a fluent, direct speaking style are essential. It also helps to have an interesting personality, but that is a gift, not something that can be learned.
Little Ryan was lucky enough to have acquired all those good qualities (personality and communication skills) naturally. But his online celebrity may fade(消退) as he becomes a teenager and is still playing with children’s toys. Stay in school, Ryan, and get a good education ... just in case.
91.What job does Ryan do that enables him to make a large amount of money
92.What do you need if you want to find opportunities to make money like Ryan
93.Becoming an online celebrity isn’t as easy or as profitable as it may seem, is it
94.How many percent of online celebrities can become rich and famous, according to a survey in 2017
95.Why does the author suggest that Ryan should stay in school and get a good education
96.Would you like to be such an online celebrity as Ryan Why or why not
【答案】91.He is a toy tester./He unboxes new toys and shares his opinion with millions of his followers on his YouTube channel, “RyanToysReview.”
92.I need a good idea and an internet connection. 93.No, it isn’t. 94.5%. 95.Because most of the online celebrities you see have at least a college degree. 96.Yes. Because I want to make a lot of money and help others.

3.What does the underlined phrase “fall apart” in paragraph 2. mean
4.How fast could the Rocket go
5.Why do you think different people have continued working hard to develop the locomotive

Today, I try to pass this idea on to my own students. _______________________________________.

Many children in big cities spend all time watching TV and playing computer games, but “Survival Holidays” can change them a lot.
Is “Survival Holidays” a wonderful idea Maybe it is. Children need more free time to play. They need to be left on their own, without adults disturbing (打扰) them. Parents care too much about their children. They like to see the children being busy with activities that are controlled(控制) by adults, but children don’t know what to do when they are in danger. Even something like crossing a small river seems to be a hard challenge. Children are not comfortable with danger. Even small danger like getting their feet wet or falling down seems very terrible to them. Many people think the survival activities are good for children. Even years later, they will still remember what they have learned. Some have learned to stay calm in different times. Some have learned how to keep safe. Others have learned how to work in a team. However, Anna’s house was quite small and there were only two little bedrooms. Her husband died when their four children were very young. But, Anna shared her house with one of the families that had lost everything in the flood until it was possible for them to rebuild their own house.
Anna’s friends were very puzzled (困惑) when they saw Anna do this. They could not understand why Anna wanted to give herself so much more work and trouble when she had so many children to support. Life would be even harder when another family joined them.
“Well,” Anna explained to her friends, “30 years ago, a woman in the town was very poor, because her husband had been killed in the war, and she had a lot of children, as I have now.”
“The day before Christmas, this woman said to her children, ‘We won’t have much for Christmas this year, so I am going to get only one gift for all of us and I am sure we will all be glad to have it. Now I’ll go and get it.’ She came back with a little girl who was even poorer than they, and who had no parents. ‘Here is our gift,’ she said to her children.”

The company says e-Radiators produce heat temperatures of up to 55℃. It says the system could save its users about $440 a year.

(2023上·上海松江·八年级校考校考)He is always in my heart. I couldn’t believe I lost him. As I think of my father, tears fill my eyes and stream down my face.
My dad always wanted to go to Canada, so he wrote a letter to one of my uncles in Canada for help. My uncle successfully got a visit visa(签证) for my dad. So he flew to Canada, looking for a better life for his kids. That year, I was six.
After a few months, dad wrote us a letter saying he was fine and happy. That letter, and its many fellows(伙伴) down the years, all with the same words, kept coming to our doors for 11 years. Yet, even as he lived here in Canada, his health was failing him―but fearing we would worry he never let on (透露) about his ill health. He spent these years in Canada working hard; finally after 11 years when he got his landed immigrant paper(永久居民证), he wrote us saying all of us could move to Canada.
We were all happy that we would finally be together. It was to be a huge family reunion(重聚). Sadly my father did not live to see his family reunion as he suffered a serious heart attack.
Yes, Canada is a wonderful country. So many times I can’t help thinking it was here that my dad was taken away from us. When I miss him, I want someone to hold me and give me a hug. (2023上·上海静安·八年级上海市回民中学校考校考)Trees are one of the oldest “citizens”(居民) of our Earth. They keep our air clean, reduce(减少) noise pollution, improve water quality and provide food and building materials.
When a tree becomes hollow or part of it becomes dead, it provides a home to small animals and is a source of food for many other animals. In many ways, the life of a tree is similar to our own life experience. When looking at the life of a tree, we learn that each period of life brings its own form of joy and challenge. Enjoy every minute of it and take care of the trees.

(2023上·上海奉贤·八年级统考校考)Making colorful art on wood
Many traditional woodcut prints (版画) are either black and white or simple in color, but reduction woodcuts (绝版木刻) can show rich colors like Western oil paintings.
The reduction woodcut is a kind of woodcut that uses one piece of wood to make a colorful artwork. The artist cuts and prints different layers (层) in order on the same piece of wood. Famous for its colors, the reduction woodcut was listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in Pu’er, Yunnan, in 2009.
Master’s story
Leng Guangmian, 40, is a reduction woodcut artist and he has learnt the art for over 20 years. Leng started learning the art at university in 2003. He said that making reduction woodcut prints is just like an adventure. “Every time we cut a pattern on the block (木块) and then print, we never know what it will be like in the end.” As he sees beautiful patterns layer by layer, he only gets more excited, added Leng.
But finishing such work is not easy. He said that before cutting, he needs to plan for the whole print and choose colors for different layers. A big print usually takes months to finish.
Leng hopes his artwork shows not only excellent woodcutting skills but also local culture and life. “For my works, there are two series: the Tea Horse Road (茶马古道), since Pu’er is one of the starting points of that road; and disappearing villages,” Leng said. “Many old villages in Pu’er need rebuilding because of safety reasons, so I want to make people remember their beauty before they are gone.”

Pudding is now gone, but you can still recognize her in old family photos: She is the one wearing fur.

Have you ever been a part of a team A team is a group of people who are working towards the same goal. A football team has two goals.
85.Is the goal of a football team to win games or to build character
86.What is character according to the passage
87.Why is the quarterback the leader of a football team
88.When do teammates encourage others on the team

Beth Reekles, a 17-year-old Welsh high school student, posted her first novel online at a story-sharing site. There it got more than 19 million views—not to mention the eyes of editors at Random House Children’s Publishers U.K. The publishers (出版商) reached out, which led to the publishing of The Kissing Booth, a novel about teenage love, in Britain. The girl talked about her inspirations (灵感) and beyond in a recent interview.
Q: What made you want to start writing a book
Beth: I was looking for something to read, but everything was vampires and fallen angels. I was just sick of it. I wanted something that was teen fiction. So I decided to write my own. I started writing around April of 2019, and shortly after I began, I started posting it online, chapter by chapter.
Q: Beth, do you think there’s a benefit (益处) to being a teenager writing for teens
Beth: I don’t know if I’m better at it, but I think it’s a bit different to be writing about teens when I’m still a teen. I’m still learning and making mistakes and doing everything teens do. I don’t have the advantage of hindsight (事后的觉悟) in all this that an adult writer has. When I wrote the book, I was really writing for myself, and I tried to write it quite honestly.
I wanted to write the book I wanted to read.
Q: How do you balance writing with your schoolwork and life Do you write every day
Beth: I’ve managed to work it into my schedule (计划 表). I always find time to write when I want to write, whether that means leaving my homework until later or getting my homework out of the way first. I don’t write every day, but sometimes I’ll write for hours on end, days on end, and I can’t stop. Sometimes I won’t write for a few weeks, when I’m busy with schoolwork and just don’t have time.
Q: Was it your dream to become a writer
Beth: I always thought it would be nice to be a writer. It’s always been a hobby. But I thought my career would lead to physics. I still plan to study physics at university.

(2022上·上海虹口·八年级上外附中校考期末)More than 65 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous Period(白垩纪), many species died off during a global disaster often called the K-Pg extinction. The end of the Cretaceous Period saw some very big changes in Earth’s oceans and on its lands. It wiped out up to 80% of all animal species, including the dinosaurs. But 20% of the animals that were alive with the dinosaurs did survive. What were these amazing animals How and why did they survive while so many others disappeared forever Behold the survivors of the K-Pg mass extinction.
Spider (Arachnid)
The earliest web-spinning arachnids (蛛形纲动物)produced silk from their abdomens about 386 million years ago. These ancient arachnids are closely related to today’s spiders. The original function of spider webs was probably to wrap eggs in a protective covering. Later, spiders evolved to use their silk to spin webs for catching prey. This ingenious invention helped them save energy while hunting and made it easier for them to survive.
Dragonflies (Meganeura 巨脉蜻蜓)
Today these flying insects have wings with a span of about 6 inches. But the earliest dragonflies used to grow to huge sizes 325 million years ago. The Meganeura dragonfly had a wingspan of almost 27 inches and would have dwarfed the largest modern dragonfly. In the oxygen-rich swamp environment of the Cretaceous, their large size helped Meganeura to absorb needed oxygen. But after the K-Pg extinction, the air and water contained less oxygen. Dragonflies adapted to their new environment by becoming smaller.
Crocodile (Sarcosuchus 帝王鳄)
The largest Sarcosuchus from the Cretaceous was 39 feet long. This is three times longer than the biggest modern crocodile. Crocodiles are predators and have probably hunted in much the same way for the past 225 million years. They have survived all this time by matching their relatively small size with their extremely powerful jaws that produce a great biting force.
Answer the following questions in complete sentences.
102.When did the K-Pg extinction happen
103.How did spiders survive
104.What were Meganeura’s large-sized wings used for
105.Dragonflies didn’t become smaller to adapt to the new environment, did they
106.Compared with crocodiles today, did crocodiles 225 millions ago hunt differently or similarly

For a long time people had wondered how life had developed on earth. The Bible stated that god had created everything in a week. Some people did not believe this. “What about fossils ” they asked. “What has happened to the strange creatures which existed so many years ago ” they asked.
Charles Darwin, a young man just out of university in 1831, was offered a job on a ship on a voyage of discovery around the world. Life on board was tough. Darwin was terribly seasick and was only happy when he was ashore collecting plant samples and observing animals. It was to be the most important journey in his life. It lasted for five years; he returned in October 1836.
Darvin studied nature in South America and in a group of small islands in the South Pacific. On each island there were birds. They were very similar, but the shape of their beaks, and even their eating habits varied. Darwin wondered why they were different. Then he realized that, long before, they had been the same. Each island had different foods available. Only the birds that could eat available food could survive. This might depend on having the right shape of beak. He realized that the same process happened with all living things. Over millions of years, all plants and animals have gradually changed into the forms we see today. What we call “the survival of the fittest’’ he named “natural selection”. Darwin called this slow process of change “evolution”. It explains why many kinds of creatures, whose fossil remains, are no longer alive.
By 1846, he had published an article describing his voyage. He also began to think seriously about evolution and natural selection, and wrote two essays describing his ideas. He did not publish these essays because he realized his ideas proved the Bible’s theory of creation was wrong, and he was worried about the anger and troubles they would cause.
Darwin spent the following years developing his theories and making them perfect. In 1859 he published them in The Origin of Species. It caused a huge row because it seemed to deny what the Bible said. His The Descent of Man (《人类的由来》), 1871, pointed out that mankind had come from the same ancestor. Darwin was upset by the opposition. Other scientists agreed with his ideas and took up his cause. The Church prohibited the teaching of the Theory of Evolution in some countries. However, today most people believe that Darwin was right.
107.What was some people’s reason of not believing in the Bible
108.What did Darwin love to do when he was working on a ship as a naturalist
109.What made Darwin realize that the evolution process happened with all living things
