With a relatively small population, pandas are not out of the woods or the bamboo forest just yet. The biggest threat to the wild panda population is habitat loss. And while around 34%0f its wild habitat is protected, these areas are still vulnerable to natural disasters, such as wildfires. To protect panda habitat, the Digital Panda System, developed by the Sichuan Forest and Grassland Administration and Chinese technology giant Huawei, was used effectively across forest and grasslands in Sichuan Province
The instant reporting system helps to detect wildfires in hard-to-reach areas, alerting fire departments so they can react quickly, as well as monitoring wildlife. Meanwhile, another smart technology-facial recognition could help identify individual pandas more accurately. Each panda has a unique facial structure and hair pattern. To the human eye, their fur-covered faces all look the same, but computer programs are able to distinguish the differences.
The system collects data from over 600 cameras, drones (无人机) and satellites, which it stores in the cloud. Researchers use this data to monitor, track and study wildlife as well as detect wildfire hotspots. Because the cameras are used in remote areas where there is little or no electricity, the system is solar-powered and uses microwave transmission (传送), which doesn’t require cables (电缆).
The system assists 140000 forest rangers, grassland managers, conservationists and researchers in Sichuan. In its first five months of operations, it detected 651 wildfire hotspots, reducing forest fires by 71.6% compared to the same period the previous year.
Despite its name, the Digital Panda System offers protection to more than just pandas. The system covers the Sichuan section of the newly established Giant Panda National Park. The park is home to most of China’s 1800 wild pandas along with a further 8,000 animal and plant species. In the future, the digital panda system could be extended across the sections of the national park that lie in Shanxi and Gansu provinces, creating more success stories for other endangered species.
8. Why was the Digital Panda System built
A. To record wildlife population.
B. To protect wild pandas from losing habitat.
C. To increase forest and grassland coverage.
D. To provide pandas with more bamboos as food.
9. What do we know about the system
A. Computer programs identify pandas by size.
B. The data collected is mainly stored in cameras.
C. Smart technology plays an important role in its operation.
D. The system fails to collect data in areas without access to electricity.
10. What is the purpose of listing figures in paragraph 4
A. To prove the effectiveness of the system.
B. To show the various functions of system.
C. To illustrate the data collection process of the program.
D. To compare the advantages and disadvantages of the system.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. The system aims at saving pandas only.
B. The system has already gone into service nationwide.
C. The system is likely to benefit other animals facing extinction.
D. The system offers protection to all the species in Sichuan Province.
B 9. C 10. A 11. D

根据第二段的“The instant reporting system helps to detect wildfires in hard-to-reach areas, alerting fire departments so they can react quickly, as well as monitoring wildlife. Meanwhile, another smart technology-facial recognition could help identify individual pandas more accurately. Each panda has a unique facial structure and hair pattern. To the human eye, their fur-covered faces all look the same, but computer programs are able to distinguish the differences.( 即时报告系统有助于在难以到达的地区发现野火,向消防部门发出警报,以便他们迅速作出反应,并监测野生动物。与此同时,另一项智能技术——面部识别可以帮助更准确地识别大熊猫个体。每只熊猫都有独特的面部结构和毛发图案。在人眼看来,它们覆盖着皮毛的脸看起来都是一样的,但计算机程序能够区分这些差异。)”可推断,智能技术在其运行中发挥着重要作用。故选C项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“The system assists 140,000 forest rangers, grassland managers, conservationists and researchers in Sichuan. In its first five months of operations, it detected 651 wildfire hotspots, reducing forest fires by 71.6% compared to the same period the previous year. “The failure to play is now a serious issue and it calls for action for change, ” says Sir Ken Robinson, a leading expert in education, creativity and human development. This is the driving force behind Outdoor Classroom Day - a global teacher-led campaign, supported by Dirt is Good, a company producing daily chemical products.
Outdoor Classroom Day, taking place on 17th May and 1st November this year, will see schools around the world swap the inside for the playground and beyond to make playtime a key part of the school day. This might involve using natural objects like stones to do sums, or going on an insect hunt to encourage curiosity. By now, Outdoor Classroom Day has grown from a grassroots movement to a global campaign that is expected to benefit five million children and over 40, 000 schools from all around the world.
This is helping to change the trend that sees many schools selling up or building up on their playgrounds and cutting back on playtime to make more room for academic studies, while at home children’s lives are increasingly filled with organized activities intended to help them learn. Today globally 61% of parents surveyed in the Dirt is Good Qualitative Study said that children don’t know how to play without using technology.
Outdoor Classroom Day is making playing time happen, with 22% of participating schools having increased their playtime since joining the campaign. 93% of teachers surveyed saw improvements in children’s creativity after playing outside and 97% believe that time outdoors is necessary for children to reach their full potential.
Scientific studies show that real play - the active, physical, self-directed play - is essential for children to develop key life skills that are not taught elsewhere. Few would question the value of developing creativity, leadership, resourcefulness, and curiosity.
12. What do children do on Outdoor Classroom Day
A. Have PE. classes on the playgrounds.
B. Have a day off and go playing anywhere.
C. Learn and play by using natural things outside.
D. Play on their own without the teachers’ guidance.
13. Why do children spend less time outdoors
A. Schools stop providing playgrounds.
B. Adults ignore the importance of playtime.
C. Parents prefer to homeschool their children.
D. Technology helps children learn better at home.
14. What’s the school teachers’ attitude towards the campaign
A. Positive. B. Uncertain. C. Unconcerned. D. Negative.
15. What’s the purpose of the passage
A. To introduce an activity. B. To advertise a product.
C. To entertain the public. D. To persuade students to play.
C 13. B 14. A 15. A

38. greatly
39. what 40. had paid
41. but 42. explanation

故填to raise。

One possible version:
Be a Lifelong Reader
Hello, everyone! I am Li Hua, an enthusiastic reader.
It is a great shame that students nowadays have so little time for leisure reading as most of them are burdened with huge academic pressure. This invariably leads to their narrow scope of reading as well as highly restricted reading time.
As a veteran book lover, I will, no matter how busy I am, squeeze at least 15 minutes to read. Through reading, I am transported back to different dynasties and countries, enjoying a totally different lifestyle and meeting people I would never acquaint in real life. In a sense, reading offers me a safe harbor where I can escape from worries in real life, rest my soul and immediately get recharged.
Therefore, I would like to inspire every one of you to join me in pursuing the habit of lifelong reading, which I believe will benefit you on all fronts.
That's all. Thank you.

A few years ago, the company I worked for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year. I've always loved running, so I was really happy when I found out I lived next to Central Park. This meant that every morning I could go for a run before I went to work.
Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of robbers in the park, so usually I didn't take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn't have anything But one morning, my wife gave me a $ 10 bill and asked me to buy some bread on the way.
It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with very few people walking or jogging (慢跑) around. While I was running through the park, another jogger knocked into me. He apologized and continued running. For a while, I didn't think too much of it. However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running, I thought it was kind of strange. The warning of robbers in the park occurred to me. “It could have been a robber!” I suddenly became alarmed, so I checked my pocket and found that the money was missing. Without thinking twice, I ran after that jogger. I finally caught up and held him by the arm. I shouted, “Give me the $10 bill! Now!”I am not usually a hot-headed (性急的) person, but I got really angry this time. I couldn't believe the robbery was actually happening to me. Filled with anger, I shook my fist at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.
I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got home, I couldn't wait to tell my wife my story. “You won't believe what happened to me,” I started with pride. She immediately stopped me, “I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.”

Paragraph 2:

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Looking at the money on the table, I stood there, shocked. For the rest of the day, I felt extremely guilty, with the innocent jogger and his “helplessness”on my mind. “How could I be so rude to him without knowing the truth Why was it that the jogger gave me the money I still remember his frightened face when I scared him away like a monster. I decided to find a chance to apologize to him. The next morning, I got up and went to the park as usual, but not for jogging. I just hung around where I met that jogger, but in vain.”
For several days, I waited at the same spot. But to my disappointment, he didn’t turn up. It was almost a week later before I finally spotted him again. I, the “robber”, gave the $10 bill back to him and said sorry to him again and again. Fortunately, he forgave me for what I had done to him and said, “Oh, it doesn’t matter.” Many years have passed, but I can still feel my cheeks burning with shame. From the experience I have learned that it is too early to judge a person before you know the truth.

Macie Semrau, a 6-year-old girl from Eliot, Maine, seldom missed school. So, when she refused to even get dressed one day, her mother decided to allow her to stay home with her father Kyle and her 4-year-old brother Caleb. The family would later be extremely thankful that the little girl refused to leave after she found her father passed out in the basement.
After returning from his night work, Kyle was feeling light-headed. He told his wife Kate that he would be laying low for the day with their children. He finally made his way to the basement. Macie paid attention to her father’s condition when she heard him shouting, and she and Caleb went to have a look. Macie found her 37-year-old father was about to lose awareness (意识). She asked him for his phone’s passcode (密码) so she could unlock it. After successfully opening his phone, she found the local police department’s number and called the police.

The system assists 140,000 forest rangers, grassland managers, conservationists and researchers in Sichuan.

A. To record wildlife population.
B. To protect wild pandas from losing habitat.
C. To increase forest and grassland coverage.
D. To provide pandas with more bamboos as food.
9. What do we know about the system

B. The data collected is mainly stored in cameras.
C. Smart technology plays an important role in its operation.
D. The system fails to collect data in areas without access to electricity.

A. To prove the effectiveness of the system.
B. To show the various functions of system.

11. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A The system aims at saving pandas only.
B. The system has already gone into service nationwide.
C. The system is likely to benefit other animals facing extinction.
D. The system offers protection to all the species in Sichuan Province.
D
