1. I was very lonely, and afraid to make friends with anyone.
①lonely是形容词,意为“寂寞的;孤寂的”,可作表语或定语,带有较强的
感彩,相当于 sad,可用来说明人,也可用来说明 life、days、years 等。
常用词组feel lonely意为“感到孤独”。
②be afraid to do sth.意为“不敢做某事”。
[辨析] be afraid of与be afraid to do sth.
A. be afraid of意为“害怕……”。强调“害怕出现某种后果”,of是介词。
B. be afraid to do sth.意为“不敢做某事”。动词不定式用来说明害怕的原因。
C. be afraid+that+从句 意为“恐怕……”。
afraid是个表语形容词,在句子中只能作表语,不能作定语。

in silence意为“沉默地;安静地”。
silence是不可数名词,意为“寂静;无声”。
3. Suddenly, I felt the touch of something bright and friendly.

可用作宾语补足语。bright可用very修饰。
②the touch of意为“……的触觉”,touch在此用作名词。 get in touch with
意为“与……取得联系”。

treasure是名词,意为“珍宝;珍贵之物”。 treasure也可作及物动词,意为
“珍藏;珍视”,后接名词、代词作宾语。

①day by day表示“一天天地;渐渐地”,用作时间状语。
[链接]与day by day结构相同的还有year by year,意为“年复一年的;一年
一年的”。
②trust作动词或不可数名词,意为“信任;信赖”。用作及物动词时,后面
可跟名词、代词、动词不定式或that从句作宾语;用作不及物动词时,后面
常跟介词in或to。
③include是及物动词,意为“包括;把……列为一部分”。不用于进行时态。
④circle是可数名词,意为“圈子;圆”。
