【原文】M: Japan is one of the world’s best travel destinations. Unfortunately, most budget travelers don’t visit Japan because they figure it’s too expensive. What they, and perhaps you, don’t know is that a vacation in Japan can be quite affordable. Here are some tips to help you save money. First, you should avoid peak travel time. There are three major holiday periods in Japan: the New Year holidays, the Golden Week holiday season — April 29 to May 5 and the Obon Festival season — three days centered on August 15. Second, consider buying a bus pass if you plan on doing a lot of sightseeing. This will save you money since bus passes typically offer deals when you purchase them. Third, while Japan has plenty of enjoyable sightseeing attractions that are free, most museums and temples charge for admission at least a few hundred yen. Many attractions offer children and seniors discounts. Child rates typically apply to those under 12 and senior discounts apply to those of 65 and over. The most important thing to remember is to be wise with your choices so as to avoid unnecessary things that you do not need. Then you will be able to enjoy Japan without spending all of your savings.

Adrian Rodriquez found the purse outside a supermarket in Chula Vista CA. Using the address on the driver’s license (驾照) inside the purse, Adrian drove to the house and knocked on the front door.

She was walking at eight months and completing 100-piece jigsaw puzzles at 15 months. So it is no surprise that Abigail Wilson, 15, from Connecticut, USA, recently made history when she became the youngest black female ever accepted into an American university! “I’m proud of myself for getting in, but I usually find it hard to get excited. It is pretty cool, I guess,” said Abigail.
Her mother, Nancy, said that Abigail was a quiet baby, born two weeks late on Christmas Day. She didn’t speak her first words until she was 22 months old. Nancy and her husband thought something must be wrong, but when she started to talk, it was with perfect speech. Her parents read her normal bedtime stories and they didn’t know at the time that she was learning all of it.
Abigail has always been the youngest person in her class. At the age of six, she was in the fourth grade; at eight, she began taking classes at an International Baccalaureate (国际中学毕业会考) program, and at ten, she took her first high school class in math. She has studied several languages, including Spanish, French, Chinese, Russian, Arabic and German.
Abigail says that she doesn’t usually plan when she studies. She considers herself scatterbrained. And she always delays things up to the last minute — this, she says, gives her the motivation to really do something.
In her free time, Abigail plays hockey and basketball, browses the Internet, reads, cooks and hangs out with her friends (they are all 17 and 18 years old). She has also studied music. Her mother says that Abigail’s music lessons have helped her to be a normal teen. She believes that Abigail needs to be in a situation where she has to fail in order to learn. “She finds playing the piano to be very difficult, but it has made her learn better,” said Nancy. “She can’t always be successful, or she won’t learn anything! People always learn more from their failures than from their successes.”
28. Abigail spoke her first word when she was ______.
A. 15 months old B. 22 months old C. 17 months old D. 18 months old
29. Why does Abigail’s mother think learning to play the piano is good for Abigail
A. Because Abigail can make new friends.
B. Because Abigail can learn something from failure.
C. Because Abigail can learn to play a musical instrument.
D. Because Abigail can be motivated and do things quickly.
30 Which of the following statements is TRUE
A. Almost all of Abigail’s classmates are older than her.
B. Abigail’s parents read very difficult stories to her in order to make her a genius.
C. Abigail started taking classes at an International Baccalaureate program at the age of ten.
D. Abigail made history because she became the youngest ever to enter an American university.
31. Which of the following titles is the most suitable for the article
A. Roads to Success B. Universities in America
C. Abigail — a Genius Girl D. Difficulty of Making Mistakes
【答案】28. B 29. B 30. A 31. C

根据第三段中的“Abigail has always been the youngest person in her class. (Abigail一直是班上最年轻的学生)”可知,A项“Abigail的同学几乎都比她大”与文意相符。故选A项。
【31题详解】

According to a new US study, couples who expect their children to look after them in old age should hope they have daughters because daughters are twice as attentive as sons overall.
The research by Angelina Grigoryeva, from Princeton University, found that, while women provide as much care for their elderly parents as they can manage, men do as little as they can get away with and often leave it to female family members.
Her analysis of the family networks of 26,000 older Americans concluded that gender(性别) is one of the most important things that decide whether or not people will actively care for their elderly parents.
In a paper presented at the annual conference of the American Sociological Association in San Francisco, she concludes that simply having a sister makes men likely provide less care.
Using data from the University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study, a study which has been tracking a cross section of over 50s for the last decade, she calculated that women provide an average of 12.3 hours a month of care for elderly parents while men offer only 5.6 hours.
“Sons reduce their relative care giving efforts when they have a sister, while daughters increase theirs when they have a brother.”
“This suggests that sons pass on parent care giving responsibilities to their sisters.”
In the UK, the 2011 Census showed that there are now around 6.5 million people with caring responsibilities, a figure which has risen by a tenth in a decade.
But many are doing so at the risk of their health. The census showed that those who provide 50 hours or more of care a week while trying to hold down a full time job are three times more likely to be struggling with ill health than their working counterparts who are not carers.
32. According to the passage, what’s the most important factor to predict if people will actively care for the elderly
A. Education. B. Gender.
C. Career. D. Income.

A. having a sister makes men less likely to look after their parents
B. sons are twice as likely as daughters to care for parents in old age
C. sons and daughters seem to give equal care to their parents
D. sons are unwilling to leave care giving responsibilities to their sisters
34. What does the author stress in the last paragraph
A. People should give up their jobs to care for the elderly.
B. Many care providers work longer hours than others.
C. Many care providers have potential health problems.
D. People shouldn’t pass on caring responsibilities to others.
35. The author develops the text by ________.

“Get out of my house, you rude, unwanted, ugly and stupid child!” Aunt Foully shouted as Justin before closing the front door. Justin looked out at the grass that surrounded his aunt’s garden. He sighed as he remembered the list of housework that his evil aunt had planned for him after he got home from school. It was just not fair. If his parents had not died, he would not have to spend his entire life with Aunt Foully. Aunt Foully was a woman with crazy, curly, orange hair. She had small, black eyes, a big nose and a mouth so wide that you could have fitted a dining plate in it. Worse still, she had a heart so cold that you would freeze if you went near it.
As Justin dragged himself to school, he felt angry and disappointed. He wanted to express his anger at somebody. He decided that for the whole day, he was going to be rude to everyone, including Madame Bell, who was a little hard of hearing.
As he stepped into the classroom and took his place at the back of the room, he started making loud noise with his mouth, and started throwing paper airplanes at his classmates. Whenever Madame Bell looked back at the class, Justin would stop and pretended to be reading his history textbook. After throwing paper plans at his classmates for ten minutes, Justin started to feel bored. He slowly took an eraser out of his pencil case and threw it at a girl in the first row named Jody. But at that moment, Jody bent down and the eraser hit Madame Bell on her back. Madame Bell turned around quickly but crashed into a water bottle on the table, water and broken glass all over the floor. Madame Bell glared at the whole class, face red with anger, and shouted, “Who threw the eraser ”
All eyes turned to Justin as he sank lower and lower in his seat. “Justin Wang, go to the headmaster’s office immediately!” Madame Bell ordered, Justin stood up and went out of the classroom.
Paragraph 1:
Justin walked in the headmaster’s office.

Paragraph 1:
Justin walked in the headmaster’s office. When the headmaster asked Justin to explain his behavior, Justin broke into tears. He told the headmaster about his sadness of living without his parents. Then the headmaster said, “I see. I know you are having a hard time losing your parents and living with your aunt. But putting it on someone else is not a good way. Take one step at a time to show your kindness.” The headmaster comforted Justin some more and told him that everything was going to be alright. “If you feel like you need someone to talk to, you can find me here anytime.”
Paragraph 2:
After the long talk with the principal, Justin went back to his classroom. Justin decided to study hard again, for once he felt relieved as he knew that there were people in this world who cared about him. He went to the front of the classroom, apologized to Madame Bell, and promised that he would never behave in such a rude manner again. Madame Bell accepted his apology, and the class was quiet again.

Adrian Rodriquez found the purse outside a supermarket in Chula Vista CA. Using the address on the driver’s license (驾照) inside the purse Adrian drove to the house and knocked on the front door.

30. Which of the following statements is TRUE

According to a new US study, couples who expect their children to look after them in old age should hope they have daughters because daughters are twice as attentive as sons overall.
The research by Angelina Grigoryeva from Princeton University, found that, while women provide as much care for their elderly parents as they can manage, men do as little as they can get away with and often leave it to female family members.
A. Education. B. Gender.
C. Career. D. Income.
33. The US study finds that ________.
A. having a sister makes men less likely to look after their parents
B sons are twice as likely as daughters to care for parents in old age
C. sons and daughters seem to give equal care to their parents
D. sons are unwilling to leave care giving responsibilities to their sisters
