I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City. When the studio didn’t want me for the film - it wanted somebody as well known as Paul — he stood up for me. I don’t know how many people would have done that; they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers.
The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft(技艺) and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other — but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core(核心) of our relationship off the screen.
We shared the belief that if you’re fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back — he with his Newman’s Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn’t see each other all that regularly, but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events.
I last saw him a few months ago. He’d been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was, and we didn’t talk about it. Ours was a relationship that didn’t need a lot of words.
4. Why was the studio unwilling to give the role to author at first
A. Paul Newman wanted it.
B. The studio powers didn’t like his agent.
C. He wasn’t famous enough.
D. The director recommended someone else.
5. Why did Paul and the author have a lasting friendship
A. They were of the same age.
B. They worked in the same theater.
C. They were both good actors.
D. They han similar charactertics.
6. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Their belief.
B. Their care for children.
C. Their success.
D. Their support for each other.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the test
A. To show his love of films.
B. To remember a friend.
C. To introduce a new movie.
D. To share his acting experience.
C 5. D 6. A 7. B
根据第一段的“When the studio didn’t want me for the film— it wanted somebody as well known as Paul”制片人不想要我,他想要当时比较出名的演员Paul,因此,可知作者当时还不是很有名。
根据第二段的“Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other— but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core (核心)of our relationship off the screen”可知,作者与Paul之间有着相似的性格特征,这让他们的友谊天长地久。
根据“We shared the brief that if you’re fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back”,我们都有这个信仰:如果你有幸获得成功,你应该有所回馈。下文“he with his Newman’s Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival”是作者举的例子,因此“sharing that brought us together.”that指代前面提到的信仰。故选A。
根据最后一段“I last saw him a few months ago. He’d been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was,and we didn’t talk about it”可知Paul已经去世了,再结合前文“I first met Paul Newman in 1968”,可推断作者写文章是为了怀念这位朋友。
如小题1中的A项“Paul Newman wanted it.”属于“颠倒黑白”类干扰项,根据“When the studio didn’t want me for the film— it wanted somebody as well known as Paul”可知制片人不想要我,他想要当时比较出名的演员Paul,说明A项明显错误。
C
I keep remembering odd things: the way she loved daffodils, jokes she told at the dinner table, the look in her eyes when she talked about my future. I knew about college before I’d never heard of high school was Mom’s second chance at the degree she never had.
Her parents pushed her too much, too hard, and she always wished she hadn’t let the pressure defeat her. She dropped out of college after one term for marriage and a secretarial job. While she never regretted marrying my father, she always regretted giving up her dream of becoming an accountant. She was determined her eldest daughter would never miss an opportunity.
One of the most extremely special times of my life was Christmas in my second school year, when I played Tiny Tim in a local community theater production of “A Christmas Carol.” Mom delighted in my endless rehearsal stories and spent hours helping me work out ways of disguising my long hair. There’s a line in the show: “And it was always said of him that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge.” Change the pronouns and that sentence describes Mom perfectly.
She was the one person I could talk to about anything. She was right about so much, so often—much more than I gave her credit for at the time.
I never imagined she wouldn’t be here now. I never thought cancer could strike so quickly, could kill someone so strong and determined in only a year. She’s the one person I couldn’t imagine living without; now, since last January, I’ve had to. Suddenly, I have no one to talk to about meaningless little things, no one whose advice I trust completely to help me with decisions. When I come home from school, I come home to an empty house, troubled by memories of the year she spent here dying. I remember the disastrous Thanksgiving when she was feeling terrible, and our wonderful last Christmas Eve together.
What I feel cheated of is the future we’ll never have.
8. What can be learned about the author’s mother in Paragraph 2
A. She gave in to her parents. B. She had an obedient daughter.
C. She fell in love with her husband in college. D. She wished her kids to follow her example.
9. What made the Christmas in the author’s second school year special
A. Her rehearsal stories. B. Her mother’s company.
C. Her favorite line from the show. D. Her mother’s skills in doing hair.
10. What does the author think of her mother
A. Clever and passionate. B. Caring and humorous.
C. Supportive and reliable. D. Talented and hard-working.
11. What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage
A. To show her mother’s great sadness. B. To tell anecdotes about her mother.
C. To talk about the cruelty of the disease. D. To share fond memories of her mother.
A 9. B 10. C 11. D

根据第二段中“Her parents pushed her too much, too hard, and she always wished she hadn’t let the pressure defeat her. She dropped out of college after one term for marriage and a secretarial job.” 故选A。
根据第三段中“One of the most extremely special times of my life was Christmas in my second school year, when I played Tiny Tim in a local community theater production of ‘A Christmas Carol.’ Mom delighted in my endless rehearsal stories and spent hours helping me work out ways of disguising my long hair.”
根据第二段中“She was determined her eldest daughter would never miss an opportunity.(她决心让她的大女儿永远不会错过任何一个机会)”结合后文描述作者参加演出,妈妈对作者没完没了的排练故事很开心,还为作者盘头发,可知母亲总是支持着作者;结合倒数第三段“She was the one person I could talk to about anything. She was right about so much, so often—much more than I gave her credit for at the time.(她是我唯一可以谈任何事情的人。她在很多方面都是对的,而且经常是对的——远远超过了我当时对她的信任)”由此可推知,作者认为她的母亲是个给予了自己支持以及非常可靠的人。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“I keep remembering odd things: the way she loved daffodils, jokes she told at the dinner table, the look in her eyes when she talked about my future.”

Do you ever listen to the songs that your parents like Chances are that you don’t. You probably think the music that they like is old and boring and that the songs on your playlist are much cooler. But scientists found that people’s music taste changes as time goes by. So it is likely that your own musical preferences will follow a similar path to your parents’, whether you like it or not.
We used to think that culture and personality (个性) are the only reasons for different music choices. But researchers at the University of Cambridge noticed that as people enter into different age groups, their social environment changes, and so does their music taste. There are some musical periods that people go through in their life.
The first period comes in the teenage years, during which people like strong music such as punk and rock, because teenagers tend to be aggressive or want to be independent.
But as people move into early adulthood, their lifestyles change they want to build close relationships with others. As a result, they become fonder of contemporary music, such as pop and R&.B, which is usually uplifting and danceable.
When middle age comes, most people have settled down. During this period, people prefer music, such as jazz and classical, as well as music like country, folk and blues.
As for old people, they prefer old songs in their childhoods. They generally listen to relaxing music, such as country music and jazz music. But you must be questioning. “Aren’t there old people who are still interested in or even crazy about rock music ” Of course there are. But their reasons for listening to rock music may have changed. At that age people may listen to remind themselves of their youth.

前文“You will experience a lot of changes through your teenage years. The changes may seem difficult. They may seem to happen quickly. Don’t be afraid! 第二节 阅读回答问题(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
When I was eight or nine years old, I wrote my first poem. My mother read the little poem and began to cry. “Buddy, you didn’t really write this beautiful, beautiful poem!”
Shyly, proud-bursting, I stammered that I had. She poured out her praise. Why, this poem was nothing short of genius! I glowed.
I spent the best part of that afternoon preparing for the arrival of my father. But he did not return until an hour late for dinner. “Ben, a beautiful thing has happened,” my mother began. “Buddy has written his first poem! And it’s beautiful, absolutely amazing.”
“If you don’t mind, I’d like to decide that for myself,” Father said.
That poem was only ten lines. But it seemed to take hours. I could hear my father breathing. “I think it’s lousy,” my father said.
“Ben, these are the first lines of poetry he’s ever written,” my mother was saying. “He needs encouragement.”
They quarreled over it. I couldn’t stand it another second. I ran from the dinning room bawling.
Up in my room I threw myself on the bed and sobbed.
A few years later I took a second look at that first poem; it was a pretty lousy poem. But it wasn’t until years later that the true meaning of that painful “first poem” experience dawned on me. As I became a professional writer, it became clearer and clearer to me how fortunate I had been. I had a mother who said, “Buddy, did you really write this I think it’s wonderful!” and a father who shook his head no and drove me to tears with “I think it’s lousy.” A writer — in fact every one of us in life — needs that loving-mother force from which all creation flows; and yet alone it is incomplete, even misleading, finally destructive, without the father force to caution, “Watch. Listen. Review. Improve.”
57. How do you understand the underlined part in Paragraph 2 (no more than 8 words )
_________________________________________________________________
58. Why did the writer’s parents quarrel at dinner (no more than 10 words )
_________________________________________________________________
59. What did the writer think of his first poem when he grew older (no more than 8 words )
_________________________________________________________________
60. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about (no more than 15 words )
_________________________________________________________________
61. What kind of parents do you need in life (no more than 20 words )
_________________________________________________________________
57. This poem was well-done./This poem was the same work of genius./This poem was almost wonderful/excellent.
58. Because they had different attitude towards the poem./Because they had different opinions about the poem.
59. It was lousy./It was very bad./It was a pretty lousy poem.
60. Everyone needs a loving mother and a strict father.
61. I need a mother who can encourage me and a father who can caution me. /I need parents who both love me./I need parents who always encourage me.
根据第一段中的“My mother read the little poem and began to cry. ‘Buddy, you didn’t really write this beautiful, beautiful poem!’(母亲读了这首小诗,哭了起来。“伙计,你不会真的写了这首非常非常漂亮的诗吧!”)”可知,母亲表扬作者的诗歌写的很好,第二段中的“Shyly, proud-bursting, I stammered that I had. She poured out her praise.( 我羞涩地,骄傲地,结结巴巴地说是我。她倾吐她的赞美之词。)”可知,作者听到母亲对诗歌的赞美之词感到非常的高兴,由此可推断,划线句子的意思是对作者诗歌的赞美。故答案为This poem was well-done./This poem was the same work of genius./This poem was almost wonderful/excellent.。
根据第五段中的“That poem was only ten lines. But it seemed to take hours. I could hear my father breathing. ‘I think it’s lousy,’ my father said.( 那首诗只有十行。但这似乎要花好几个小时。我能听到父亲的呼吸声。“我觉得很糟糕,”父亲说。)”可知,父亲对作者写的诗歌并不满意,结合第三段中的“‘Ben, a beautiful thing has happened,’ my mother began. ‘Buddy has written his first poem! And it’s beautiful, absolutely amazing.’(“本,一件美好的事情发生了,”我妈妈开始说。“巴迪写了他的第一首诗!它很美,绝对令人惊叹。”)”可知,母亲认为作者写的是个很精彩,由此可以推断,父母两人吵架是因为他们的观点不一致。故答案是Because they had different attitude towards the poem./Because they had different opinions about the poem.。
根据最后一段中的“A few years later I took a second look at that first poem; it was a pretty lousy poem.(几年后,我重新审视了那首诗;这是一首非常糟糕的诗。)” It was lousy./ It was very bad. /It was a pretty lousy poem.。
根据最后一段中的“A writer — in fact every one of us in life — needs that loving-mother force from which all creation flows; and yet alone it is incomplete, even misleading, finally destructive, without the father force to caution, “Watch. Listen. Review. Improve.”(一个作家——实际上是生活中的每一个人——都需要那种慈母般的力量,所有的创作都源自这种力量;然而,如果没有父亲的告诫,它是不完整的,甚至是误导的,最终是毁灭性的,“观察、倾听、审查、改善。”)”可知,作者认为生活中的每一个人只有一个爱自己的母亲是不完美的,还需要一个严厉的父亲才能让自己不断的进步,所以最后一段主要阐述的是人人都需要一位慈母和一位严父。故答案是Everyone needs a loving mother and a strict father.。
根据介绍的作者的写的第一首诗歌的经历以及最后一段中的“A writer—in fact every one of us in life—needs that loving-mother force from which all creation flows; and yet alone it is incomplete, even misleading, finally destructive, without the father force to caution, “Watch. Listen. Review. I need a mother who can encourage me and a father who can caution me. /I need parents who both love me. /I need parents who always encourage me.。

When I was eight or nine years old I wrote my first poem.
Listen. Review. Improve.”
