On an autumn day, a stranger rang a woman’s doorbell. The woman looked through the peephole (窥视孔) and saw a man. At first, she thought it was a salesman who might go away. When he didn’t, she decided to answer and see what he wanted.
The man asked if a woman named Karen lived at the address. The woman answered that Karen was her mother, but she wasn’t home now. The man smiled, handed an envelope over and then walked away. When the woman saw the contents of the envelope, she was shocked. She then rushed out of the apartment to run after the man, but the stranger was gone.
Inside the envelope was $1,000 in cash and a letter explaining where the money was from. “Please accept this gift. Our late mother devoted much of her time and resources to helping people through Random (随机的) Acts of Kindness program. One way our family honors her is to keep the tradition with acts of random kindness. Although we do not know you personally, other members of our community identified you as a deserving recipient of this gift. Please use this money in any way you see fit.”
Random Acts of Kindness does not have to involve the giving of money. It can be as simple as sharing your time with someone lending an ear, or offering a compliment (赞美). The most important part is that the act is done with no expectation of anything in return.
It turned out that Karen had been battling cancer for three years. The illness left her financially struggling and this amount of money would really help her. We truly never know what someone is going through and how much a random act of kindness might help turn their life around. Surely, $1,000 won’t necessarily meet her need, but it can go a very long way in changing someone’s luck and setting them on a better path.
4. Why did the man come to the woman’s home
A. To donate money to Karen with cancer.
B. To find out the real situation of Karen.
C. To ask for the address of a patient he was to help.
D. To invite Karen to join Random Acts of Kindness.
5. How did the man’s family honor his mother
A. By appealing to more people to help others.
B. By continuing to offer help to those in need.
C. By starting Random Acts of Kindness program.
D. By raising funds for Random Acts of Kindness.
6. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about Random Acts of Kindness
A. The return it expects. B. The way to join it.
C. How it begins. D. How it functions.
7. What does the last paragraph intend to convey
A. No pains, no gains. B. Love me, love my dog.
C. More love more hope. D. Faith can move mountains.
C
By now we all know the importance of drinking enough water throughout the day, but there is such a thing as too much. Earlier this summer, a 35-year-old Indiana woman, died from water toxicity(毒性作用) after drinking too much water in a short period of time, according to a local news report.
While drinking enough water is important, overdoing it can lead to low levels of sodium(钠) in the blood, which can be life-threatening, according to Julia Zumpano, an expert at Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Human Nutrition.
Exactly how much is enough for our body depends on a variety of factors, including our weight, age, location and overall health. People in poor health, or active people such as athletes, are at risk of water toxicity, as they tend to drink large amounts of water and lose sodium through their sweat. So are women and children because of their smaller body size.
While the gold standard for many years has been eight glasses of 8 ounces(盎司) of water per day, the National Academy of Medicine suggests enough water intake is about 125 ounces for men and about 91 ounces for women. And it recommends not drinking more than 48 ounces of water per hour. This includes total water from fruits, vegetables and other drinks besides water.
If you struggle with getting enough water per day, you can try water bottles to help track your water intake. Eating fruits and vegetables can also increase our water intake. You could experiment with adding flavor to improve the taste of your water.
“Most people had better keep drinking water throughout the day, but larger amounts may be needed in the heat for an extended period of time or during exercise. If you are thirsty water—listen to your body. But don’t overdo it,” says Zumpano.
8. How does the author introduce the topic of the text
A. By giving an example. B. By showing the findings.
C. By making a comparison. D. By putting up a question.
9. What effect may drinking too much water have on us
A. Putting on weight. B. Speeding up aging.
C. Cutting sodium in blood. D. Making us more active.
10. What do we know from paragraph 4
A. We must drink less than 48 ounces of water a day.
B. Women can take in more water than men an hour.
C. We can take in little water from fruits and vegetables.
D. We’d better drink about 64 ounces of water every day.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A. What is the result of water toxicity
B How much water is too much water
C. Why do you find it difficult to drink enough water
D. How often need we remind ourselves to drink water
D
An international design competition was held in 1955 for an art center to be built. There were 233 entries received from many countries. Danish architect Jorn Utzon won the competition with his unique design of shells that looked like sails on a boat.
The construction began on March 2, 1959 and was expected to be accomplished within 4 years. However, they quickly ran into trouble. The ground was not suitable to hold the weight of the building and huge concrete foundations (混凝土地基) had to be built. Mr Utzon had also made mistakes about how many columns (柱) would be needed to support the roof, thus making the concrete shells at the risk of falling down.
Mr Utzon figured out a new way to disperse the weight of the concrete by making each shell out of a part of a perfect globe. The 14 shells look like a single piece of concrete, but they are actually built across frames (框架) of concrete to hold them in place. They weigh as much as 15 tons each. The highest roof point of the building is 67 m above sea level — the same as a 22-storey high building.
This major correction saved the project but added one decade to the building time. The building consists mainly of two main halls, a number of smaller theaters, performance halls and other additional facilities. Both main halls are housed in relatively large sail-shaped structures, and the smaller performance halls are housed at the ground floor. In particular, the grand organ (风琴) in the concert hall is one of the world’s largest organs containing over 10,000 pipes.
The Sydney Opera House is a great success in the history of architecture. It is not only a world-famous performing arts center and the landmark of Sydney, but also recognized as one of the seven wonders of the world of the 20th century. In 2007, the Sydney Opera House was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
12. What was the difficulty when building Sydney Opera House
A. Its columns were at the risk of falling down.
B. There was no satisfactory appearance design.
C. The foundation couldn’t support its huge weight.
D. No suitable site could be found for construction.
13. What does the underlined word “disperse” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Put on. B. Spread out. C. Cut down. D. Look into.
14. How long did it take to build Sydney Opera House
A. 4 years. B. 6 years. C. 10 years. D. 14 years.
15. What does the last paragraph focus on about Sydney Opera House
A. Its position. B. Its history. C. Its general shape. D. Its inner structure.

I lost all my hair at age 2 due to alopecia (脱发). Though all I can do was fit in when growing up, I would look at all the beautiful girls I was surrounded by at schools and in the media and think if I had hair, I would be beautiful, too.
I wore a wig (假发) and was often laughed at for it. They called me “bald (光秃的)”. I had no choice but just to let them laugh at me, because I know it was the fact. I felt like I deserved it, as if losing my hair was somehow my fault.
When I came to the senior high school, I still wasn’t okay with my alopecia and avoided talking about it. I was expecting a huge change, and I extremely wanted to be like everyone else. I kept my alopecia a secret and was fearful of telling anyone about it.
I remembered one day I built up the courage to tell a girl about my alopecia. Hesitating for a long time, I finally stammered (结结巴巴地说), “I have no hair because of alopecia.” She was shocked because I hid it so well. “I can’t have a date with someone who doesn’t have hair,” she said in a low voice. Disappointed and heart-broken, I turned around and walked away. From then on, I shut down, never wanting to let anyone know my alopecia again. I continued to wear my wig no matter what the weather was and what I was doing. It was my security and way to hide from the world.
Sports became my escape, though. I was fortunate to have inborn athletic ability. I would race home and play basketball for hours every day. I would pretend to make the game-winning shot when I was playing. I had big dreams. I did not think about my alopecia during these moments, but think who I wanted to become and what I wanted to accomplish.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

I put all my time and energy into becoming the best player I could be.

B To find out the real situation of Karen.

A. The return it expects. B. The way to join it.
C. How it begins. D. How it functions.
7. What does the last paragraph intend to convey
A. No pains, no gains. B. Love me, love my dog.
C. More love, more hope. D. Faith can move mountains.

根据第四段“Random Acts of Kindness does not have to involve the giving of money. It can be as simple as sharing your time with someone lending an ear, or offering a compliment (赞美). The most important part is that the act is done with no expectation of anything in return.(随机的善举并不一定要包括给钱。它可以很简单,比如与倾听的人分享你的时间,或者给予赞美。最重要的是,这种行为是在不期望任何回报的情况下进行的。)”可知,随机善举不一定包括给钱,还可以与他人分享时间,倾听他人,或者给别人赞美,最重要的是不求任何的回报,由此可知,第四段主要讲述的是关于随机善举如何运行的。故选D项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据尾段中的“We truly never know what someone is going through and how much a random act of kindness might help turn their life around. Surely, $1,000 won’t necessarily meet her need, but it can go a very long way in changing someone’s luck and setting them on a better path.(我们真的不知道一个人正在经历什么,也不知道一个偶然的善举能在多大程度上改变他们的生活。当然,1000美元不一定能满足她的需求,但它可以在很大程度上改变一个人的运气,让他们走上更好的道路。)”可知,随机善举不一定能满足人们的需求,也不知道能有多大程度地改变人们的生活,但是这能改变一个人的运气,使他们走上更好的道路,由此可知,尾段倾向表达的是更多的爱会给人们带来更多的希望。故选C项。

B. How much water is too much water
C. Why do you find it difficult to drink enough water
D. How often need we remind ourselves to drink water
A 9. C 10. D 11. B

第一段首句“By now we all know the importance of drinking enough water throughout the day, but there is such a thing as too much.(到目前为止,我们都知道一天中喝足够的水的重要性,但也有喝水太多的问题。)”首先提出了喝水过多会有不良后果,接着“Earlier this summer, a 35-year-old Indiana woman, died from water toxicity(毒性作用) after drinking too much water in a short period of time, according to a local news report.(据当地新闻报道,今年夏天早些时候,一名35岁的印第安纳州妇女因短时间内饮水过多而死于水中毒。)” 故选A。
根据第二段中的“While drinking enough water is important, overdoing it can lead to low levels of sodium(钠) in the blood(虽然喝足够的水很重要,但过量喝水会导致血液中的钠含量过低)”可知,喝水过多会导致血液中的钠含量降低。
根据第四段中的“While the gold standard for many years has been eight glasses of 8 ounces(盎司) of water per day, the National Academy of Medicine suggests enough water intake is about 125 ounces for men and about 91 ounces for women.(虽然多年来的黄金标准一直是每天8杯8盎司的水,但美国国家医学院建议,男性的足够摄入水量约为125盎司,女性约为91盎司。)”

C 13. B 14. D 15. A

(Utzon先生还在需要多少根柱子来支撑屋顶的问题上犯了错误,从而使混凝土贝壳有倒塌的危险)”和下文“the weight of the concrete by making each shell out of a part of a perfect globe (通过将每个贝壳做成一个完美球体的一部分来……
根据第二段中“The construction began on March 2, 1959 and was expected to be accomplished within 4 years. (建造于1959年3月2日开工,预计4年内完工)”和第四段中“This major correction saved the project but added one decade to the building time.(这一重大修正挽救了项目,但增加了10年的建设时间)”可知,悉尼歌剧院原本计划4年内完成建造,但后来增加了10年,因此一共花了14年的时间。故选D项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“The Sydney Opera House is a great success in the history of architecture. It is not only a world-famous performing arts center and the landmark of Sydney, but also recognized as one of the seven wonders of the world of the 20th century. In 2007, the Sydney Opera House was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List. 第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
I put all my time and energy into becoming the best player I could be.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then a marathon totally changed my life.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I put all my time and energy into becoming the best player I could be. I was still laughed at sometimes, but it began to bother me less. I became determined and wasn’t going to let anything slow me down or hold me back from accomplishing my dreams. With time going by, I broke countless school records, and received a scholarship. They were dreams that came true one by one. I started to gain recognition from others. I became known as the girl who was good at basketball, not just as the girl who didn’t have hair.
Then a marathon totally changed my life. To check my own athletic ability, I signed up for a marathon of our city at the end of my second year. I trained hard before it. When I was the first to be arriving at the finish line, something flashed inside me. I pulled my wig off my head and crossed the finish line bald, which shocked those on the site. Instead of laughing at me, they celebrated and cheered for my courage and running, not for my being bald. Tears and sweats flowing down my cheeks, I saw the true beauty of myself.
