Key points
1. In China, the spring festival is a big event. People usually start preparing for the festival one month before it comes.
在中国，春节是一个盛事。人们通常提前一个月就为节日作准备。
event n. 事件，大事，尤指重要事情。
start v. 开始，着手，动手，与begin同义，其常见搭配为：start/begin doing sth; start/begin to do sth.
注意：在以下三种情况下，start/begin后面只能接不定式。
①主语是物时：a strong wind started to blow.开始刮大风了。
②动词start/begin是进行时：She is starting to prepare the lunch.
她开始准备午餐。
③start/begin后接不定式表内心作用，表示心里活动的动词时：

他们准备美味食物、清扫和装点房子。
prepare用作及物动词时：
prepare sth. 表示 “准备……”，后接名词或代词作宾语。
eg:
Our English teacher was preparing the lessons when I came into the office.
当宾语是食物之类的东西时，可译为 “制；做”。
Mother was preparing dinner in the kitchen while father was
watching TV.

3. On the eve of the festival, the whole family gets together for
a big dinner.
在节日（春节）前夕，全家人欢聚一堂，共享大餐。
on the eve of…在……前夕
the whole family 指的是“全家人”，表达的是整体的概念，所以谓语动词用单数。类似的还有 the whole class, the whole school。
eg:
The whole school meets together once a week.
全校的师生每星期集会一次。

4. Then we knocked on our neighbors’ doors and shouted,“Trick or treat!”
①knock on/ at… 敲……
eg: I knock on the door, and it opens.我敲了敲门，然后门开了。
拓展：
knock sb down(over) 打倒、击倒、撞到某人。
eg: She was knocked down by a bus. 她被一辆公共汽车撞倒在地。
knock sth down 推倒、拆掉或者拆毁建筑物。
eg: These old house are going to be knocked down.
这些旧房子要拆了。
knock into sb. 撞上某人。
eg: Someone was standing too close and I knocked into him.
有人站的太近，我就撞在他身上了。

shout to sb. 向某人喊话。
eg:
The policeman shouted to the driver.“stop！”警察向司机大喊“停车”。
shout at sb. 冲某人喊（有叫骂的含义）。
