This idea is unkind. Children need to have a good holiday at the end of a busy school year. The long holidays give them time to do things they wouldn’t otherwise(不然) get to do. In my family we go to Ireland and see relatives and friends during the summer vacation. And it might seem long to some people, but time flies when you’re having fun.
—Ruby Mullin
I have good memories of my own long summer holidays, and I love the chance to have days out with my son. I think many parents, especially single parents like me, have made job choices based on being able to have time off for the summer—and now we’ve done that, we don’t want to see things changed.
—Viki Bantock
Having worked at a school that had a four-week summer break instead of the usual six I’d say longer holidays are better. Teachers are under so much stress now to get good results; most put in lots of hours in the evening and at weekends and feel very tired by the end of term. There is no progress in learning after a six-week holiday, but it only takes a few weeks for students to get back up to speed.
—Marek Kaminski
A shorter summer holiday would be much better. The six-week break seems a thing for another age, when mothers didn’t work and your mum lived round the corner to give you a hand. If I was able to take a six-week holiday, great, I’d love it—but in the real world that isn’t possible. Instead, I end up spending around £600 on childcare for each week when I’m working.
—Nachelle Crowther
1. What does Ruby Mullin usually do during summer holidays
A. She does part-time jobs.
B. She visits relatives and friends.
C. She prepares for the new school year.
D. She goes travelling around her country.
2. What do we know about Marek Kaminski
A. He usually works overtime.
B. His family is very supportive.
C. His son doesn’t do well in school.
D. He doesn’t teach school any more.

A. Ruby Mullin.
B. Viki Bantock.
C. Marek Kaminski.
D. Nachelle Crowther.

Two weeks ago, a 5-year-old girl named Sunshine Oelfke emptied out her piggy bank (存钱罐) onto the living room floor and started counting. Her grandmother, Jackie Oelfke, thought she was playing as she carefully lined up the coins. But then she saw the girl put the coins in her backpack.
“What are you doing with that money ” Jackie asked her granddaughter.
“I’m taking it to school,” Sunshine replied. “I’m going to take it for milk money. My friend Layla doesn’t get milk—her mom doesn’t have milk money and I do.”
Jackie’s heart melted at Sunshine’s words. Choked (哽咽) with strong feelings, Jackie held her sweet granddaughter tightly in her arms.
Last week, Jackie and Sunshine met with her teacher, Rita Hausher, and handed her the $30 the girl had saved. There are 20 kids in Sunshine’s class and about half don’t get milk. It costs $ 0.45 a carton (纸盒). The total adds up to about $180 a month for every child in the class to have milk every day.
After dropping Sunshine off at school, Jackie posted a video on Facebook to explain her granddaughter’s plan. To her surprise, many people offered to donate toward the cause. Within a week, Jackie raised more than $1,000. Now every student in Sunshine`s class can get free milk for the rest of the year.
Jackie said Sunshine doesn’t see her kind act as a big deal. She was just trying to look out for her friends. “She doesn’t understand the influence she’s brought about,” Jackie said. “But now she knows she can do whatever she puts her heart to.”

A new trend called “praise groups” or “in-need-of-praise” chat groups has become popular on Chinese social media. In Chinese culture, where modesty (谦逊) is valued, openly seeking and giving praise is uncommon. These chat groups provide a platform for people to receive compliments (赞扬) and encouragement, which are often lacking in their daily lives.
To join a praise group, users can pay a fee on e-commerce sites, starting at 50 yuan for five minutes of compliments. The group members will then show the person with praises and kind words. The compliments can be designed for a friend or loved one as well. Participants have found that being praised by strangers can help lift their spirits and improve their self-confidence.
For example, Meng Zha, a student at Shanghai’s Tongji University, tried the service and found it amusing and uplifting. She received compliments on her appearance and even quotes (引用) from popular songs. Ms Meng couldn’t help but laugh at the compliments and expressed her desire to post such high-quality praises in the future.
Praise groups have appeared as a way for people in China to seek and receive compliments and encouragement that may be lacking in their daily lives. It provides a positive and uplifting experience for participants, improving a sense of happiness and self-worth.
Those who support the groups, see them as an antidote to extremely bad moods (情绪) which are often associated with things happening on the Internet. “At first, the purpose of this group is to make us learn to praise others and accept others’ praises confidently. Here we can drop everything, and use our heart to praise and support others,” one member said. But the life journey is long and there are some unexpected situations that we can only count on ourselves to face when there is no one out there to offer help.

A. A way of making new friends. B. A kind of medicine.
C. A method of being confident. D. The wisdom of solving problems.
11. What is the author's attitude to praise groups
A. Objective. B. Critical. C. Supportive. D. Unclear.

My little brother is a five-year-old boy named Tex. When it comes to being funny and lovable, he is the best. But when it comes to keeping secrets, he is the worst!
It just so happened that my parents’ wedding anniversary was near Valentine’s Day (情人节), and they planned to celebrate by going away for a couple of days. But at the last minute, my dad came home from work with bad news.
“I’m afraid our trip will have to wait. The shop assistant has the flu, so there will be no one to manage the grocery store if we go.”
“It’s OK,” my mom said, biting her lip. “We’ll have lots more anniversaries to celebrate.”
That was when I came up with the idea to surprise my parents with an extra-special cake. Luckily, the grandmother of my good friend Ollie, a very generous person who lives right next door, was an amazing baker with a kitchen full of most of the stuff you need to make a yummy valentine-anniversary cake.
I called Ollie if she and her grandmother could help me make a valentine-anniversary cake. I wanted to surprise Mom and Dad after dinner tonight. As usual, Ollie was happy to help me. Then, I asked my mother if I could go to Ollie’s and promised I would be back soon. Once I had my mom’s permission, I looked for perfect ingredients (原料) and a perfect heart-shaped pan just to make my cake more interesting and tasty. As I packed all the things I needed, I noticed Tex was glued to TV, which I thought was a perfect opportunity to leave secretly.
As I went out for Ollie’s, Tex stopped me, asking where I was going. I whispered to him I was going to make a cake for Mom and Dad’s anniversary. He wanted to join in. “You can stay here and make cards. But remember, we won’t say a single thing about the cake until after dinner.” I said seriously. He nodded without hesitation. Ollie’s grandmother was extremely helpful, who helped me make a beautiful valentine-anniversary cake, and I brought it home secretly.
注意:
1.续写词数应为100左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I was about to hide the cake in the kitchen when Tex yelled, “Mom”.

Within a week, Jackie raised more than $1,000. Now every student in Sunshine`s class can get free milk for the rest of the year.

【答案】范文
I was about to hide the cake in the kitchen when Tex yelled, “Mom”. Tex waved his cards and shouted “Surprise!” “No,” I said “Not yet!” Right then, my mom rushed in and asked what was going on. “We won’t tell you about the cake!” said Tex innocently. “I was trying to give you and dad the perfect anniversary surprise,”I explained, “but the youngest of this family just ruined everything.’’ “We don’t care if it’s a surprise.” said my mom delightedly. “It’s the thought that counts, and you just made our day.” I looked at my mother’s smile and felt warm in my heart. Tex came running over and hugged my legs and Mom’s, smiling happily. Although the plan was disrupted, this unexpected surprise made us appreciate each other’s company and love even more.
