Down House, home of Charles Darwin:
Fun fact
Charles Darwin, his wife, Emma, and their children lived at Down House for 40 years from 1838. Several rooms appear as if the family still live here: with croquet sets thrown into an under-stairs cupboard, a half-played game of backgammon on a side table and Emma’s knitting(毛线) left on a chair in the drawing room. Upstairs, an exhibition showcases Darwin’s voyage aboard HMS Beagle, including a reconstruction of his cabin. Outside, visitors can explore the sheltered gardens which Darwin used as an open-air laboratory, and the greenhouse in which he planted rare plants and devised botanical experiments.
No room at Down House escaped Darwin’s experiments. In the drawing room he once placed a jar of earthworms on the grand piano to see whether they could hear.

Ida Nelson was relaxing herself in her sister’s sauna (桑拿室) when she heard the sound of a small airplane circling the nearby airport.
It was 11: 30 at night in a remote village with a population of 70, and, as she told the newspaper reporter, Any time a plane flies over that late, you know something is wrong. Nelson and her sister leaped out of the sauna, ran to the window, and saw the problem-the airport’s runway lights were out. Nelson threw on some clothes, jumped into her jeep, and floored it to the airport, where she found a local pilot trying to turn on the lights manually.
Normally, if you push the button 10 or 15 times, the lights will just light up, Nelson told the reporter. Not this time. Meanwhile, she and the pilot learned of the plane’s exigent mission - it was a helicopter there to transport a seriously ill local girl, to the nearest hospital, 280 miles away in another city.
Nelson had a plan. Driving her jeep to the end of the runway, she shone her headlights on the road for the plane to follow. Great idea, but it wasn’t enough. More light was needed so a neighbor called nearly every home in the village 32 of them.
Within 20 minutes, 20 vehicles arrived at the airport, many of the drivers still in pajamas. Following directions from the helicopter pilot, the cars lined up on one side of the runway. The helicopter made its final approach and, guided by the headlights, landed safely. The young patient was loaded onto the aircraft, and the plane immediately took off again Her illness was never publicly known, but she has since been recovered.
Without them, the girl might not have made it. However, for Nelson, it was only a small deed.

B. It made noise as it ran out of fuel
C. It could not land safely in darkness.
D. It didn’t arrive at the scheduled time
5. What does the underlined word exigent in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. impossible B. unique C. intense D. urgent
6. What can we conclude from the passage
A. The girl has been in the hospital since her illness was reported.
B. The creative thought and the sense of duty of Nelson led to the final landing.
C. The helicopter was to transport the girl from the local hospital to another one.
D. The villagers gathered so quickly because they were awake and ready to help.
7. What does this passage want to tell the readers
A. No way is impossible to courage.
B. A friend in need is a friend indeed
C. A small act of kindness makes a big difference.
D. Where there is a wisdom. there is effectiveness.

Each year, backed up by a growing anti-consumerist movement, people are using the holiday season to call on us all to shop less.
Driven by concerns about resource exhaustion, over recent years environmentalists have increasingly turned their sight on our “consumer culture”, with Groups such as The Story of Stuff and Buy Nothing New Day growing as a movement that increasingly blames all our ills on our desire to shop.
We clearly have a growing resource problem. The products we make, buy and use are often linked to the destruction of our waterways, biodiversity, climate and the land on which millions of people live, but to blame these issues on Christmas shoppers is misguided, and puts us in the old trap of blaming individuals for what is a systematic problem.
While we complain about environmental destruction over Christmas, environmentalists often forget what the holiday season actually means for many people. In fact, for most, rather than an add-on to an already heavy shopping year, Christmas is likely the only time of year they have the opportunity to spend on friends and family, or even just to buy the necessities needed for modern life.
This is particularly true for Boxing Day, often laughed at by anti-consumerists the most. While we may look down on the queues in front of the shops, for many, those sales provide the chance to buy things they've needed all year. As journalist Leigh Phillips argues, “This is one of the few times of the year that people can even hope to afford such ‘luxuries’, the Christmas presents their kids are asking for, or just an appliance that works.”
Indeed, the richest 7% of people are responsible for 50% of greenhouse gas emissions. This becomes particularly harmful when you take into account of our consumption “problem” anyway. Why are environmentalists attacking these individuals, while ignoring people like Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who has his own 1.5bn yacht with a missile defence system
Anyway, anti-consumerism has become a movement of wealthy people talking down to the working class about their life choice, while ignoring the real cause of our environmental problem. It is no wonder no one is changing their behaviour—or that environmental destruction continues without becoming any less severe.
8. What can be inferred about the environmentalist movement from Paragraphs 2 and 3
A. It has targeted the wrong persons. B. It has achieved its intended purposes.
C. It has solved the environmental problems. D. It has persuaded consumers not to shop any more.
9. What does Leigh Phillips think of Boxing Day
A. A trap for consumers. B. A tough problem to deal with.
C. A precious shopping opportunity. D. A positive contribution to the economy.
10. For what purpose is Roman Abramovich mentioned in the text
A. To show how rich he is.
B. To announce he is a Russian.
C To present his contributions to the environment.
D. To suggest the real cause of environmental problems hasn't been found.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. The environmental problems are very serious.
B. Less shopping can't solve the environmental problems.
C. Resources are becoming fewer and fewer on the earth.
D. Measures should be taken to protect the environment.
D
People who sleep fewer than six hours a night are more likely to die early, researchers in University of Warwick have found in a recent study. They discovered that people who slept for less than six hours each night were 12% more likely to die before the age of 65 than those who slept the recommended six to eight hours a night.
The researchers pointed out that previous studies had shown that the lack of sleep was associated with problems like heart disease and high blood pressure. However, the researchers also found that sleeping too much was linked to an early death. Those who slept for more than nine hours a night were 30% more likely to die early, as an article in the latest Sleep suggested. That directly contradicts another passage in the same journal last month suggesting that people who slept for ten hours or longer a night were more likely to live to 100. This was thought to be because people who lived into extreme old age were healthier and therefore slept better.
However, the authors of the latest research contradicted this and suggested that long sleep was a sign of underlying illnesses such as depression and low levels of physical activity. Professor Francesco Cappuccio at the University of Warwick said: “While short sleep may represent a cause of ill-health, long sleep is believed to represent more an indicator of ill – health.”
He also mentioned: Modern society has seen a gradual reduction in the average amount of sleep people take, and this pattern is more common among full-time workers suggesting that it may be due to social pressures for longer working hours. On the other hand, the worsening of our health is often accompanied by an extension of our sleeping time.”
Consistently sleeping six to eight hours per night may be good for health. However, whether to achieve the goal depends on various factors such as the environment as well as measures of public health aimed at favourable changes of the s working environments Professor Francesco Cappuccio added.
12. What did researchers in University of Warwick find
A. Six to eight hours’ sleep can be appropriate for people.
B. People at an old age are healthier because they sleep longer.
C. People who sleep fewer than 6 hours each night die before 65.
D. Sleeping for more than 9 hours a night does good to one’s health.
13. What is Professor Francesco Cappuccio most likely to agree with
A. How long we sleep depends on our education.
B. Our health becomes worse because we sleep less.
C. Modern people sleep less because they work longer.
D. Long sleep is what causes our health problems.
14. What did the researcher think may help people have proper sleep
A. Social pressure B. Extension of sleeping time.
C. Longer working hours D. Changes of working environments.
15. What can be the best title for this passage
A. Time to Sleep early B. How Long Should We Sleep
C. The Importance of Sleep D. Longer Sleep Makes Better Health

____17____ One of the biggest myths about emotional eating is that it’s caused by negative feelings. Yes, people often turn to food when they’re stressed out, lonely, sad, anxious, or bored. But emotional eating can be linked to positive feelings too, like the romance of sharing dessert on Valentine’s Day or the celebration of a holiday feast. Sometimes emotional eating is tied to major life events, like a death or a divorce.____18____
Emotional eating patterns can be learned: A child who is given candy after a big achievement may grow up using candy as a reward for a job well done.____19____ It’s not easy to “unlearn” patterns of emotional eating. But it is possible. And it starts with an awareness of what’s going on.

Next time you reach for a snack, wait and think about which type of hunger is driving it.
A. Believe it or not, we’ve all been there.
B. If a crying boy gets some cookies, he may link cookies with comfort.
C. One study found that people who eat food like pizza become happy afterwards.
D. And you often may feel worse about eating the amount or type of food you like.
E. Understanding what drives emotional eating can help people take steps to change it.
F. Boys seem to prefer hot, homemade comfort meals, while girls go for chocolate and ice cream.
G. More often, though, it’s the countless little daily stresses that cause someone to seek comfort in food.

Ring a Bell
Ms. Tracy looked up from her yellow notebook and cleared her throat. The noise in the class died down as we turned toward her. "We're going to help a charity to collect money by ringing a bell. Each of you will ring it for four hours," she announced. As the words left her lips, complaints could be heard around the room. Unwillingly, I dug for my planner and look notes. Four hours of ringing a stupid bell. Four hours that I could be studying for the SAT. Was this supposed to be a joke I joined the students around the table and signed up for 1he first day of break-to get it over with.
A few weeks later, I was standing next to the big blue-and-white Walmart. There was another guy holding a jar across from me. Great, I was going to be stuck here ringing a bell with a guy who was trying to get donations for another charity. To top it off, it was only about 4.4℃.
Slowly, I put on the red dress bearing the symbol of ow charity. I hoped that I already spent two minutes doing that, Ring! Ring! A group of older women came up with their walking sticks to drop in some change. А man with а broad-cimmеd bat came by and put some coins in. I checked my phone. Just 10 minutes had passed.
A strong bitterly-cold wind blew against my freezing face. I was starting to regret ignoring my mom's advice to wear a scarf. I looked up, wishing that time would pass more quickly. A few birds swept around the poles. The sky was gently blue. Palm trees waved in the cold wind. How comfortable it might be to curl(蜷缩)up with a hot cup of tea and a book on the cozy sofa. Then another ring brought me back to reality.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
From the parking lot stepped out a poorly-dressed man, walking with difficulty toward me.

Inspired by his generosity, I continued to ring my bell happily.

A. Its lights went out by accident
B. It made noise as it ran out of fuel
C. It could not land safely in darkness.
D. It didn’t arrive at the scheduled time
5. What does the underlined word exigent in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. impossible B. unique C. intense D. urgent

根据第二段中“Nelson and her sister leaped out of the sauna, ran to the window, and saw the problem-the airport’s runway lights were out. (Nelson和她的妹妹跳出桑拿房,跑到窗前,看到了问题——机场跑道上的灯灭了)”和倒数第二段中“The helicopter made its final approach and, guided by the headlights, landed safely.(直升机做了最后的降落,在前灯的指引下安全着陆)”可知,机场跑道的灯灭了,所以直升机无法在夜间找到跑道的位置。故选C。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后“it was a helicopter there to transport a seriously ill local girl, to the nearest hospital, 280 miles away in another city. (这是一架直升机,用来运送一名重病的当地女孩,去280英里外的另一个城市最近的医院。)”可知,直升机的任务是用来运送一名重病的当地女孩,去280英里外的另一个城市最近的医院,因此该飞机执行的是很紧急的任务,故划线与D选项“urgent(紧急的,迫切的)”为同义词。故选D。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Nelson had a plan. Driving her jeep to the end of the runway, she shone her headlights on the road for the plane to follow. Great idea, but it wasn’t enough. More light was needed so a neighbor called nearly every home in the village 32 of them. (Nelson有一个计划。她把吉普车开到跑道尽头,把车灯照在路上,让飞机跟着。好主意,但这还不够。因为需要更多的光线,所以一个邻居几乎给村里的每户人家打了电话——一共32户)”和第五段中“Within 20 minutes, 20 vehicles arrived at the airport, many of the drivers still in pajamas. Following directions from the helicopter pilot, the cars lined up on one side of the runway. The helicopter made its final approach and, guided by the headlights, landed safely. (20分钟内,20辆车抵达机场,许多司机还穿着睡衣。按照直升机驾驶员的指示,汽车在跑道的一侧排成一排。直升机做了最后的降落,在前灯的指引下安全着陆。)”可知,Nelson想出在跑道上闪耀车灯来指引直升机降落的主意,并和众多邻居一起使得直升机安全降落,故是Nelson这个有创意的想法和责任心使得直升机安全降落。故选B。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Without them, the girl might not have made it. However, for Nelson, it was only a small deed. (如果没有他们,这个女孩可能不会成功。然而,对Nelson来说,这只是一件小事。)”可知,Nelson的一个小小的举动阻止了一起事故同时也及时地拯救了一位女孩。故本文想要告诉我们小小的善举也会产生重大影响。故选C。

C. To present his contributions to the environment.
A 9. C 10. D 11. B

根据第二段“Driven by concerns about resource exhaustion, over recent years environmentalists have increasingly turned their sight on our “consumer culture”, with Groups such as The Story of Stuff and Buy Nothing New Day growing as a movement that increasingly blames all our ills on our desire to shop.(由于对资源枯竭的担忧,近年来环保主义者越来越多地把目光转向我们的“消费文化”,像“东西的故事”和“新一天不买东西”这样的团体日益成为一种运动,越来越多地将我们所有的疾病归咎于我们的购物欲望)”及第三段中“but to blame these issues on Christmas shoppers is misguided, and puts us in the old trap of blaming individuals for what is a systematic problem(但将这些问题归咎于圣诞购物者是被误导的,这让我们陷入了把系统性问题归咎于个人的老陷阱)”可推知,环保主义者把环境问题归咎于购物者是错误的。故选A。
根据第五段中“As journalist Leigh Phillips argues, “This is one of the few times of the year that people can even hope to afford such ‘luxuries’, the Christmas presents their kids are asking for, or just an appliance that works.”(正如记者Leigh Phillips所说:“这是一年中为数不多的几次人们甚至可以指望买得起这些‘奢侈品’的时候之一,比如孩子们想要的圣诞礼物,或者只是一件好用的电器。”)”
根据倒数第二段“Indeed, the richest 7% of people are responsible for 50% of greenhouse gas emissions. This becomes particularly harmful when you take into account of our consumption “problem” anyway. Why are environmentalists attacking these individuals, while ignoring people like Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who has his own 1.5bn yacht with a missile defence system (事实上,最富有的7%的人要为50%的温室气体排放负责。无论如何,当你考虑到我们的消费“问题”时,这就变得尤为有害。为什么环保主义者攻击这些人,却忽视俄罗斯亿万富翁Roman Abramovich这样的人?Abramovich拥有一艘价值15亿英镑、装有导弹防御系统的游艇)”可推知,文章提到Roman Abramovich是为了表明环保主义者没有弄清环境问题的根本原因。故选D。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Anyway, anti-consumerism has become a movement of wealthy people talking down to the working class about their life choice, while ignoring the real cause of our environmental problem. It is no wonder no one is changing their behaviour—or that environmental destruction continues without becoming any less severe.(不管怎么说,反消费主义已经变成了一场富人对工人阶级谈论他们的生活选择的运动,而忽视了我们环境问题的真正原因。难怪没有人改变他们的行为,也难怪环境破坏仍在继续,却丝毫没有减轻)”结合本文介绍了环保主义者认为环境问题是普通民众购物造成的,而反消费主义实际上是富人对工人阶级的生活选择进行贬低的运动,忽视了环境问题的真正原因。可知,文章主要讲的是减少购物不能解决环境问题。故选B。

A 13. C 14. D 15. B
根据第一中的“They discovered that people who slept for les than six hours each night were 12% more likelyto die before the age of 65 than those who slept the recommended six to eight hours a night.(他们发现,每晚睡眠时间少于6小时的人在65岁之前死亡的可能性比每晚睡眠时间达到建议的6至8小时的人高12%)”可知,研究者们发现,每晚睡眠不足6小时的人在65岁之前死亡的可能性比那些每晚睡足6至8小时的人高出12%。 故选A项。
根据倒数第二段中“Modern society has seen a gradualreduction in the average amount of sleep people take, and this pattern is more common among ful-time workers, suggesting that it may be due to social pressures for onger working hours.(现代社会已经看到人们的平均睡眠时间逐渐减少,这种模式在全职工作者中更为常见,这表明这可能是由于更长工作时间的社会压力)”可知,Professor Francesco Cappuccio认为睡眠不足在全职工作者中更为常见,这可能由于社会压力导致的长时间工作造成的。
根据最后一段中“Consistently sleeping six to eight hours per night may be good for health. However, whetherto achieve the goal depends on various factors such as the environment as well as measures of public health aimed at favourable changeofthe working environments(每晚持续睡6到8小时可能对健康有益。

Ring a Bell
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
From the parking lot stepped out a poorly-dressed man, walking with difficulty toward me.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Inspired by his generosity, I continued to ring my bell happily.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
From the parking lot stepped out a poorly-dressed man, walking with difficulty toward me. I saw his unbalanced shoulders and awkward figure. His hair was a mess and his shirt was dirty. I stopped ringing the bell, wondering what he was going to do. He pulled some change out of his worn pocket and reached towards the bucket. I couldn't help but say, "Thank you, sir." He turned to smile. The money he donated was not a lot, but it was clearly a lot to him. This act of charity, though not much, was worth so much more than donations given by those who were better off.
Inspired by his generosity, I continued to ring my bell happily. The bell rang so merrily that it attracted more people. I broadly smiled at everyone who approached me, feeling me shameful inside about my unwillingness and resistance when given the task. It was still chilly but I was bathed in the sunshine of kindness. Many say that these days people are becoming more and more selfish. I say that whoever believes that needs to go and ring a bell for a charity as I did
