Brackenridge Park
The park was first established in 1899 and has been popular with both locals and visitors ever since. They’re all connected by a hike and bike trail, with plenty of stops along the way to picnic, climb trees, and refill water. Admission is free!
Eisenhower Park
Just a 20-to 30-minute drive from the city center, the park puts the best landscapes in the Texas Hill Country on full display, holding 6 miles of hiking trails, both paved and unpaved. When it comes to learning abroad, you may feel uncertain and nervous. Then a supportive host family can be hugely significant in making you feel comfortable in a new country and a new culture. Here are some reasons.
Imagine if you could find a warm greeting upon arrival at your chosen destination. Your homesickness will be cured by the quality time you spend with your host family. Sharing conversations, trying each other’s hobbies or enjoying a movie evening together can create bonds and friendships that last a lifetime.
While you live with a local family, you can make the most out of everyday conversations in a relaxing environment, which will encourage you to learn new words in new ways that you cannot always pick up in the classroom. You will make much faster progress in your learning as you’ll be putting your skills to use outside the classroom as well as with native speakers.
While you live with your host family, you will eat the local cuisine and get to know the true character of the local food culture. Although each family does it differently, this will give you invaluable insights into local life. You may even learn some delicious family recipes and should also share yours.
While exploring unknown pathways can be exciting, sometimes you just have to be somewhere on time. Living with a host family will teach you how to travel like a local and navigate the London Underground like a pro (老手) and read a train schedule with so much confidence that a native speaker asks you for direction.
Daily life with your host family will teach you so much about the culture and traditions of the country you are living in. It will also teach you to embrace cultural differences. Not only will you return home with new language skills but you will hopefully also come home with a second family abroad—a true home away from home.

Three scientists who played central roles in the discovery of the hepatitis C virus(丙型肝炎病毒)have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2020. This prize will bed shared by Michael Houghton, from the United Kingdom, and United States scientists Harvey J. Alter and Charles M. Rice, who all made notable contributions toward the discovery of the blood-born virus that causes chronic(慢性的)liver problems.
Alter demonstrated in the 1970s that some people who received blood transfusions(输血)would develop cases of hepatitis that were not caused by the hepatitis A or B viruses, suggesting that another infectious agent was to blame. In the 1980s, Houghton managed to isolate(分离)the genetic sequence of the virus, while Rice proved that the pathogen(病原体)could replicate and cause infection. The World Health Organization estimates that around 71 million people worldwide live with hepatitis C, which can cause major liver complications(并发症)and, in some cases, death.
The Nobel Assembly said the three researchers had contributed to a “landmark achievement in the ongoing battle against viral diseases”. “The discovery of hepatitis C virus revealed the cause of the remaining cases of chronic hepatitis and made blood tests and new medicines that have saved millions of lives possible, ” the assembly said in a statement. ”“Thanks to their discovery, highly sensitive blood tests for the virus are now available and these have essentially eliminated post-transfusion hepatitis in many parts of the world, greatly improving global health.” The assembly said that the discoveries performed by the newly minted Nobel Laureates also allowed for the rapid development of antiviral drugs directed at hepatitis C. “For the first time in history, the disease can now be cured, raising hopes of eradicating hepatitis C virus from the world population,”the statement said.
The award for physiology and medicine is the first of the Nobel Prizes to be handed out this year, with prizes in physics, chemistry, literature, peace and economics to follow during the next seven days.

In recent years, Britain has seen a rise in interest in learning and teaching Chinese as a second language. In 2015, Britain’s Department for Education devoted 10 million pounds to Chinese teaching in state schools across the country. Hundreds of pupils are taking part in the program, which aims to make at least 5, 000 young people fluent in Chinese by 2022.
A Chinese-English nursery named Hatching Dragons was established in London in 2015, accepting babies from as young as 6 months to 5 years old. Two years later, the first bilingual (双语的) English and Chinese primary school was opened at Kensington, London.
Petts Wood Mandarin-English Preschool, which opened Friday at Bromley in southeastern suburb of London, is the first Chinese immersion (沉浸式) preschool founded in Britain. After three years of planning and preparation, the school has drawn expert opinions on Chinese immersion learning from Europe, the US and China. It offers Chinese and English bilingual immersive education for children aged 2 to 5.
Bromley Councillor Kim Botting, who has visited China three times, is very interested in Britain-China education exchanges. He called the school a wonderful and fantastic thing for the community while attending the opening ceremony on Friday.
The local community showed huge interest and support to the newly established preschool. Xu Zhi, head teacher of Petts Wood, said the preschool offered up to 25 places and six children registered (before the opening, with many families signed up for trial lessons in the next few weeks.
“I had the idea of establishing a bilingual preschool three years ago when I realized that more and more British families wanted an earlier start for their children’s Chinese learning,” Xu said. “Many high school students in Britain also learn Chinese at school for two or three hours each week, but that is not enough and also a bit late for language learning.”

根据下文“A new report from The Guardian said long time of climate change can do that. The report said Tuvalu will be the first country to be completely lost due to climate change.”(《卫报》的一份新报告称,长期的气候变化可以做到这一点。该报告称,图瓦卢将成为第一个因气候变化而完全消失的国家。)可知,长期的气候变化可以使一个国家消失,摧毁一个国家。选项D. But how about destroying it (但是摧毁它呢?)与下一句中的“that”相对应,下文是对选项D所提出问题的回答;同时,选项D中的“it”又指代上文“Building a country is never easy.”中的“country”,衔接合理,语意通顺。故选D。
【17题详解】
根据下文“It has long been at risk from risiing sea levels.”(长期以来,它一直受到海平面上升的威胁。)和“Now, 40 percent of the area in its capital is underwater at high tide.”(现在,首都40%的地区在涨潮时被淹没。)推知,空处应提到一个因海平面上升而面临被摧毁的一个国家。选项E. Tuvalu is a Pacific island nation with nine islands and 12,000 people.(图瓦卢是一个太平洋岛国,拥有9个岛屿和1.2万人口。)符合题意;同时第一段最后一句“The report said Tuvalu will be the first country to be completely lost due to climate change.”(该报告称,图瓦卢将成为第一个因气候变化而完全消失的国家。)提到了图瓦卢这个国家,故选项E承上启下,符合语境。故选E。
【18题详解】
根据第2小题可知,第二段主要是在介绍图瓦卢这个岛国因气候影响所面临的现状,结合上一句“By the end of the century, it is believed that all the islands will be underwater, reported Reuters.”(据路透社报道,到本世纪末,所有的岛屿都将被淹没。)推知,空处应陈述面对这种情况,该国人可能会采取的措施。选项G. So many people in Tuvalu have often moved around the country and even to other countries.(所以图瓦卢的很多人经常在全国各地搬家,甚至搬到其他国家。)符合语境。故选G。
【19题详解】
根据上一句“To help with the problem, the country plans to build its country in the metaverse (虚拟世界).”(为了解决这个问题,该国计划在虚拟世界中建立自己的国家。)推知,空处应陈述在那个虚拟的国家他们会做什么。选项A. The digital country will recreate the same landscape and keep its cultural and historical records.(这个数字国家将重建同样的景观,并保留其文化和历史记录。)符合题意。“digital country”呼应“country in the metaverse”衔接上文。故选A。
【20题详解】
根据下文“He gave us an example. If people from other countries enter the space of the digital country but just show their names, how do people know if they do or do not truly belong to that country ”(他给我们举了一个例子,如果来自其他国家的人进入数字国家的空间,但只是显示他们的名字,人们如何知道他们是否真正属于那个国家?)可知,建立数字国家还存在一定的问题,选项B. Now, the metaverse is not mature, which may bring some problems.(现在,虚拟世界还不成熟,这可能会带来一些问题。)符合题意,下文对此进行了举例说明。故选B。

The top reason is getting a chance to broaden your horizons while experiencing a high standard of education and first-rate facilities. On the other hand, drawbacks such as high expenses and leaving their families affect some students when they make decisions.
Generally speaking, I think for undergraduates, studying abroad is a precious opportunity. If you have self-control, go ahead and try. Overall, I suggest everyone look at this question rationally with reasonable consideration.

“A nursing home would be safer, Dad,” Arlyn told her father, Jim.
“No way,” Jim interrupted. His wife passed away just a year before. At 91, he still wanted to remain in the cottage he and his wife had built.
Jim started experiencing an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease. Arlyn found his decline was indeed all-consuming. However, she herself was in her late sixties; her house was a 40-minute drive from the cottage. One day, when she read about a new eldercare service called Care. coach, it fueled her interest. For about $200 a month, a computerized avatar (头像) (controlled remotely by a human caregiver) would watch over a home-bound person 24 hours a day. She signed up immediately.
A week later, a tablet arrived. Following the instructions, Arlyn uploaded dozens of family pictures. Then an animated dog appeared on the screen. She presented the tablet to Jim, pointing to the screen pet, and said excitedly, “Here Dad. You have a new companion.” Jim, doubtful about the dog’s service, knew he had to learn how to get along with the dog before Alzheimer’s took hold.
Within a week, Jim and his dog, whom he named Pony, settled into a routine. Every 15 minutes or so, Pony would look for Jim calling his name if he was out of view. Sometimes Jim would “pet” to awake the sleeping Pony on screen. Pony reminded Jim which caretaker would be visiting to do the tasks: preparing meals, driving him to a senior center, etc. Pony would read poetry aloud or discuss the news. When Pony praised Jim’s sweater, Jim repaid by petting Pony’s screen with his finger sending hearts floating up from the dog’s head. One evening when Arlyn came to visit her father as usual, she was amazed to find that Pony was holding up a photo of her late mum to her dad between its paws.
注意:
1.续写词数应150左右;

Seeing the close bond between Pony and her dad, Arlyn felt a relief.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Jim stared at the photo fondly, with tears welling up in his eyes. Memories flashed through Jim’s mind. It had been more than a year since his wife’s death and hardly had he mentioned her anymore. That day, though, he gazed at the photo affectionately and declared emotionally, “I still love her”. Sensing Jim’s sadness, Pony sent hearts to Jim on the screen and comforted him. Uplifted by Pony’s loving remarks, Jim petted Pony’ screen with his finger sending hearts floating up from the dog’s head again. Pony responded with its tail wagging cheerfully. Arlyn sat in silence, with an illusion of slipping back to the old happy days.
Seeing the close bond between Pony and her dad, Arlyn felt a relief. She was amazed at Pony’s heart-warming service and her dad’s fondness for Pony. Pony was more than just a virtual companion; rather, he had become a member of the family, a loyal friend who had helped them through the tough times. With time going by, Arlyn noticed the improvement in her father’s cognitive ability and mood, and he got more engaged in conversations. Arlyn was grateful to Pony. Knowing that Pony was not a substitute for human interaction, she resolved to cherish every moment with her dad, for the presence of loved ones was crucial.

Not only will you return home with new language skills, but you will hopefully also come home with a second family abroad—a true home away from home.

8. What was the important discovery of three scientists
A. The hepatitis A virus. B. The hepatitis B virus.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Jim stared at the photo fondly, with tears welling up in his eyes.
