Some American states are making money available for high school graduates so they can learn skills to help them get technology jobs without a college degree.
One example is the northeastern state of Connecticut. It has invested $70 million to put young people and adults through short-term training programs that can lead to good paying technology jobs.
The programs are known as “non-degree skills training.” They have helped people like Mohameth Seck, who left college after two years. Seck said he wanted to work in technology but the classes he was offered in a traditional college program “weren’t really interesting”to him. He also said traditional college takes too long to finish.
So Seck decided to enter a one-year computer training program run by a nonprofit organization. Today, the 25-year-old teaches computer coding at a skills training center, or academy, in Stamford, Connecticut. Eck said friends who finished the program also have good jobs.
Research carried out by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce showed that people who do get a college degree earn about 84 percent more over their lifetimes. But not everyone can get into, pay for or do well in college.
David Soo leads an organization called Jobs for the Future. He said the college model that has been in place for the last 40 years does not work for everyone. And this is especially true for students who are Black, Hispanic (拉美裔美国人) or whose families do not make a lot of money. “We need to find a better way to serve those students.” Soo said.
Anthony Carnevale is the leader of Georgetown’s Center on Education and the Workforce. He said that while job training is good, it is not 100 percent correct to tell people they cannot benefit from a college degree.
One reason companies might hire college graduates is because they think they might have better communication and teamwork skills.
4. What did Seck think of the training program
A. Boring. B. Time-consuming. C. Rewarding. D. Demanding.
5. Which statement is Not true
A. Some students can’t afford to go to college.
B. Some students are incapable of getting into college.
C. The programs offer more choices to lead to a good job.
D. People cannot benefit from a college degree.
6. Who will most benefit from the short-term training programs according to David Soo
A. Minority and poor families. B. Everyone in America.
C. African-American students. D. College graduates.
7. What can be improved for the short-term training programs according to the last paragraph
A. Expanding in size. B. Being given more financial support.
C. Including interpersonal skills in the programs. D. Teaching how to write code or design websites.

As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information are people remembering less If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remembered the folder location better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互记忆)”.
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organise huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing.
8. What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow’s research
A. We are using memory differently.
B. We are becoming more intelligent.
C. We have poorer memories than before.
D. We need a better way to access information.
9. Why does the passage begin with two questions

B. To show the author’s attitude.
C. To describe how to use the Internet.
D. To explain how to store information.
10. What can we learn about the first experiment
A. Sparrow’s team typed the information into a computer.
B. The two groups remembered the information equally well.
C. The first group did not try to remember the information.
D. The second group did not understand the information.
11. What do people do in transactive memory
A. To keep the information in mind.
B. To change the quantity of information.
C. To organise information like a computer.
D. To remember how to find the information.

Fabrizio Fidati, who lost his right hand in an accident 25 years ago, had not experienced the feeling of temperature in his missing fingers until trials for a technology unlocked the cool of iced water and heat of a stove burner for him.
Eventually, the researchers hope it could lead to a more natural feeling of loved ones when he is wearing his prosthetic (义肢). With thermal electrodes( 热电极) placed on the skin of their remaining arm, amputees such as Fidati reported feeling hot or cold in their phantom(幻象) hand and fingers, as well as directly on the arm, according to the trials by the Swiss university EPFL.
The 59-year old Italian is among 27 amputees who took part in the trials, with 17 of them reporting a successful test. Those tested have also been able to differentiate between plastic, glass and copper, pointing to where they feel the feelings on images of a hand.
“By stimulating (刺激) specific parts of the remaining arm of the amputees, we could induce the sense of touch in the missing phantom hands,“ said Dr. Solaiman Shokur, a senior scientist at EPFL who co-led the study. “What they feel in this phantom hand is similar to what they feel on their undamaged hand.”
The technology, which has been tested for more than two years, does not need to be implanted. It can be worn on the skin and combined with a regular prosthetic.
Dr. Silvestro Micera, who co-led the study with Dr. Shokur, said they now wanted to test the device on a larger scale before combining it with other technologies to improve sense of touch in amputees. “We think that we could give people a better sense of embodiment of their hands and maybe even give them the possibility to feel their loved ones in a much more natural way,” Dr. Shokur added.
12. What happened to Fabrizio Fidati
A. He carried out an experiment. B. He was unable to sense iced water.
C. He accidentally lost his right hand. D. He encountered a traffic accident recently.
13. What does the underlined word“induce“ in paragraph 4 mean
A. Predict. B. Increase. C. Imagine. D. Cause.
14. What is Dr. Silvestro Micera’s plan for the near future
A. Perfecting the device. B. Cutting down on costs.
C. Employing more volunteers. D. Producing the device on a large scale.
15. Where is the text probably taken from
A. An educational speech. B. A news report.
C. A course brochure. D. A movie review.

The Comeback
Laurie sat quietly in the empty dressing room at the ice-skating rink(溜冰场). She had not been skating in any competition since her left knee was badly injured in an accident six months ago. As she waited for her turn to skate, Laurie was very nervous. She knew that today was a very important day in her comeback.
“If I can win today,” she thought, “I can skate in the World Cup next year and then maybe I can make it to the Olympics.”
Laurie was told that she had a tough competition this year, and a girl from Connecticut named Jinny Jordan who was really strong in everything. “She is the one you have to beat this year,” the coach said.
Minutes later, the door opened and Laurie saw a young woman who was about her own age. The young woman dumped some of her belongings onto a chair. The bag fell to the floor with a sound.
Laurie felt uncomfortable as she looked at Jinny. “So this is my competitor,” thought Laurie, “Because of her, I may lose tonight.”
“This costume(服装) was my mom’s idea,” Jinny started the conversation, looking down at her red, white, and blue skating dress. “ looks like a flag.”
Laurie couldn’t keep from smiling. She pointed to Jinny’s skating bag. “Something fell out of your bag,” Laurie said.
Jinny looked at the clothing and equipment that lay scattered on the floor. As she began to gather her belongings, the door opened.
“Jinny,” called someone, “You’d better give the tape of your music to the sound engineer right away.”
“I thought I gave him my music tape an hour ago,” said Jinny, “Tell him it’s the green box with my initials written in white in the right-hand corner.”
“He said you never gave it to him. and he’s getting angry.”
“Then I don’t know what I did with it,” said Jinny, hurrying out.
Laurie knew that music was nearly as important to the program as skating itself. If she lost her music tape, she might as well forget about skating. Laurie stood up and walked to the chair to do a few more knee bends.
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly she saw something small and dark green behind the leg of the dressing table.

Paragraph 2:
Feeling relaxed, Laurie skated quickly to the center of the rink after the announcer finally called her name.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Feeling relaxed, Laurie skated quickly to the center of the rink after the announcer finally called her name.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Suddenly she saw something small and dark green behind the leg of the dressing table. She pulled it out and saw the white Initials J.J, in the top right-hand comer. “It’s Jinny’s music tape!” She exclaimed. Laurie’s heart started beating fast. “All I’d have to do is forget that I found this,” she thought. “If Jinny doesn’t have her music, she might as well not skate. And then I would win.” Laurie shivered slightly as she thought about this. Then she wondered,“Does winning mean so much to me that I’d be willing to cheat for it ” She walked to the door and called Jinny loudly.
Feeling relaxed, Laurie skated quickly to the center of the rink after the announcer finally called her name. The music filled the stadium and she skated gracefully and beautifully. Her left knee was fine and she felt herself gliding on the ice. The audience applauded from time to time, enthusiastically supporting her in her comeback. When she finished, her coach ran up to her and hugged her. “You did it, Laurie!” She said. Laurie smiled and thought about Jinny’s music tape. “No one will ever know how close I really came to losing.” She said softly to herself.
