Pearl S. Buck was the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. She wrote about one hundred books. But most people remember Pearl S. Buck for her novels about China. She knew the country and its people very well. For nearly forty years, China was her home.
Pearl’s parents were religious(宗教的) workers in China. In 1892, they were visiting the United States when Pearl was born in Hillsboro, West Virginia. Four months after her birth, the family moved back to China.
Pearl and her family lived among Chinese people. Pearl’s education began at home. Her mother taught her many of the things she would have learned in an American school. A Chinese tutor taught Pearl other subjects, including the writings of the famous thinker Confucius, Chinese reading, writing, and history.   Helen Keller was an American writer. She was born in Alabama in 1880 and died in 1968. She was the first deaf and blind American person to graduate from college.
When she was nineteen months old, she had a strange illness. The illness made her deaf and blind. When she was a young girl, she developed a friendship with a girl called Martha Washington. Martha was the daughter of Helen’s family’s cook. Martha created a sign language(手势语) while she was playing with Helen. By the age of seven, Helen could use over 60 signs to communicate with her family.
In 1886, Helen’s mother read Charles Dickens’ book “American Notes”. The book told a story about the successful education of a deaf and blind child. She got an idea after reading the book. She decided to seek(寻求) help for Helen. Then she got to know a 20-year-old teacher Anne Sullivan. Anne became Helen’s teacher and friend. The friendship between Helen and Anne lasted for the next 49 years. Helen learnt Braille(盲文) and used it to learn French, German and Greek(希腊语).
Helen was good at writing. Anne encouraged her to write. Then she started to write novels. Soon she became a popular writer in America. Besides writing, Helen wanted to do a lot of things.
