I have always been an introvert (内向的) person, not talking a lot and not hanging around too much. Luckily, I have a good friend, Vishu. She is active, fearless and outspoken. I am too shy to come out of my shell and she is everything I am not. Better still, she is so loving and caring towards me. Not a day goes by when I don’t thank God
for blessing me with such a good friend.
However, several days ago, a fight broke out between me and Vishu. There was nothing to fight about yet we
did fight and things have changed since then.
What happened was, a few days back when I arrived at school, I saw Vishu talking happily with some other classmates. I walked towards them and I was on the point of saying “Hi” when I heard my name mentioned. I stopped, wondering what they were talking about. Then, “She is sometimes mean and too quiet.” came into my ear. I was stunned. I couldn’t believe my best friend said so. As it seemed, I was wrong about my friend, at least I
thought of her to be my true friend but that day I felt that I barely knew her anymore.
When she saw me standing there looking at her angrily, she knew I had heard everything. She tried to explain by saying “You are my best friend. When I said you were mean, what I meant was…”. I had a lot to say to her but I could not just because of my sense of pride. I said “You are not good enough to be my friend.” I walked away
without giving her any chance to say a word. I thought that walking alone was much better than walking with
people for whom you mean nothing.

Sam, Wayne and Tim were three men in their 60s, jamming in the same dusty old garage where they used to play music when they were in high school. They chatted up after ages, remembering the school days when they
would take to the stage and play together as a band.
Wayne looked around, wide-eyed. “It’s been more than 40 years since we practised here.”
“Yes! And remember how we promised to keep in touch and play together once a week ” Tim laughed. “Sam,
remember our brilliant plans ”
“Ah yes! We thought we were inseparable! Now, look at us! Old and wrinkled, joints hurting, meeting at each other’s grandkids’ weddings… we’re terrible at keeping in touch, except Will, of course. He was always calling and
messaging. Where is Will He’s the guy who planned this,” Sam smiled.
Just then, the three men’s phones buzzed (嗡嗡地响), and the message they received made their hearts sink. It was a message from Jenny, Will’s wife. Wayne rushed to his car, and the others followed. A short drive later, the
three men knocked on the door of Will’s house and tried to wait patiently.
Jenny looked almost unrecognizably pale and told them that Will was taking a nap. The medicines made him
all weak. It moved the three men to tears to see their fourth band member in such poor health.
And that day, they found out the whole story of Will’s illness. Will’s heart condition was serious, and it had been worsening over the past few months. The doctor said only a surgery could help. But it was going to cost at least $15,000. And after all the previous treatments, Will and Jenny didn’t have that kind of money anymore. Jenny
said the doctors had given Will 6 months, bursting into helpless tears. The three men comforted her and wiped their
own tears. “Money isn’t an issue,” Sam said as an idea came to him.

Jenny was 18 and she thought she would be strong enough to face going away to college2,000 miles away from home. But by the second day, she was crying on the phone, telling her mom she wanted to come home. It could be because she was the baby of a family of six and the only girl, or her family was particularly close and
loving.
Unfortunately, her roommate, Zara, heard her crying. As soon as Jenny hung up the call, Zara started making fun of her. “Oh my! Does baby miss her mommy in Phoenix ” Jenny wiped her tears and asked whether she missed her parents and longed to go home. Zara replied coldly that she had put away such childish things and warned that she shouldn’t behave like a cry baby. Soon everyone in the dorm was calling Jenny “Cry Baby”. The idea of
quitting college and running home constantly occurred to Jenny. But somehow, she made it through.
One day, her dad called and asked her to come home for a long weekend. In the end, her father added that she
could bring her roommate Zara home and he would soon send two return tickets. Jenny had never told her parents
that Zara was far from friendly or supportive. She’d been too ashamed and eager to hide her complete misery(痛苦)
from her family.
That evening, Jenny told Zara about her family’s invitation. Zara stared at Jenny, her mouth open. “A ticket for me Why ” she asked. “I told them you were nice to me…So they wanted to be nice to you...” Jenny explained

When I was 13, I climbed my first mountain. I was overweight at the time and out of breath when I reached the peak. But I loved the challenge of it. Soon I’d climbed nearly 100 peaks. My parents were happy I’d finally
found my favorite hobby.
I often go climbing with my friend Mel Olsen. Two years ago, on December 30, when I was 16, she and I
drove to Oregon to tackle 11, 240-foot Mount Hood.
It’s safer to start winter climbs at night when there’s less risk of the sun melting the snowpack. That day, we started at 3 a.m., following the paths alongside the ski runs. The temperature was about 14 degrees, and we wore
layers we could easily remove, knowing the climbing would make us warm.
After about five hours, we reached Devil’s Kitchen, a plateau(高原) at about 10, 000 feet, just before the final push to the top. By this point, the wind conditions were very unpleasant. My exposed skin felt as though it were burning. Some other climbers decided to turn back, but Mel and I went ahead. We had ice axes(斧子), helmets and
crampons(带钉铁鞋底). We were prepared for the climb.
The trail we followed grew narrower and steeper. At around 9 a.m., we reached an ice step. It was about three
or four feet tall and sloped at a 75-degree angle. I volunteered to go first. I placed my left foot on the ice step.
You gain a sense of the ice when you stick your ax and crampons into it, and it felt good. Confident that I was safe, I put my full weight on it. Suddenly I heard a crack, and a whole thick piece of ice broke off the step, right
under my foot.
In an instant, I fell backward. I could hear Mel calling my name as I fell down, bouncing off the rock face and rolling down the mountain as if I were a character in a video game. I remember thinking, “That is it. You’re done.”

Erie was a little boy who was raised in an orphanage (孤儿院). He had always wished that he could fly like a bird. It was very difficult for him to understand why he could not fly. There were birds at the 200 that were much
bigger than him, and they could fly.
“Why can’t I ” he thought. “Is there something wrong with me ” he wondered.
Jerry was another little boy who was crippled (瘸). He had always wished that he could walk and run like other
kids.
“Why can’t I be like them ” he thought.
One afternoon Eric ran away from the orphanage. He came upon a park where he saw Jerry playing in the sandbox. Eric noticed that Jerry was crippled. He ran over to Jerry and asked him if he had ever wanted to fly like a
bird.
“No,“ said Jerry, ” But I have wondered what it would be like to walk and nun like other kids.”
“That is very sad,” said Erie, “But do you think we could be friends ”
“Sure.” Jerry said excitedly.
The two little boys played for hours. They made sand castles and made really funny sounds with their mouths. Sounds made them laugh really hard. Then Jerry’s father came with a wheelchair to pick him up. Eric instantly ran

A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people hardly visited. The house was very old and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out he would not say hello to neighbors or passers by
but simply just glare(瞪眼看)at them.
The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy's parents told him to
stay away from the house. A lot of the other neighborhood children were told the same from their parents.
As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. " What do you want " the old man said. The little boy
was very afraid but he had a quota(份额) to meet for school with selling the magazines.
"Uh, sir, I uh am selling these magazines and uh I was wondering if you would like to buy one." The old man just stared at the boy. The boy could see inside the old man's house and saw that he had dog figurines(小狗雕像) on the wall. "Do you collect dogs " the little boy asked. "Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here. They are all I have." The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul. "Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much." The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, "No boy, I don't need any magazines of
any kind, now goodbye."
The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the big house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a

Returns
When I saw my mother at her home last month, it was a hot Sunday. I travelled there by train. As the train
reduced its speed, I knew I was going to see her.
Leaving the station, I headed to the town center where I bought cakes — the kind she used to tell me to bring home. And I bought a cat, which I think can accompany her for along time. Until I got home, I didn’t think
anything besides, I’m going to see her again and she’s waiting for me.
I knocked on the narrow door of the ground-floor apartment. She called out, “e in!” “You should
lock the door!” “I knew it was you. There’s no one else it could have been.”
When she saw the cat, she was very pleased as if it were my kid. She took the cakes, a little uneasy, but thanked me with a happy tone to her voice. That’s because she had already bought some for us on her way back
home.
She was laughing, standing by the table. She put her hand on my shoulder, tilting her face up for me to kiss. At
the same time, she was firing off questions about my trip, my children, my husband, my work...
We sat opposite each other at the table that, along with the meal she had already prepared for me, almost filled
her apartment. She bought it big — it can seat at least ten people! But in six years, not once...
After meal, she tried to come up with more subjects of conversation, so that I wouldn’t go too soon, leaving her alone with her desire for me, her longing to live with me, her daughter, forever. Meanwhile, the cat approached
us, which kept us busy for along time — watching it, taking turns holding it... My mother was the happiest she’d
been since I got home. She seemed to have forgotten that I was going to leave.

Mr. Watson’s store was widely known throughout the neighborhood. It sold many different things. Every day after school, Jess came to the store and he loved to look at the pipes (烟斗). One pipe especially caught his eye. He imagined that some day he would be a grown man and could smoke a pipe, just like this one. He did not remember
his father, but he knew his dad smoked a pipe.
Jess reached out and touched the pipe. He kept thinking that when he was old enough, he would go to work and his mother could stay home. He would not have to wait three hours after school until she came home from her
job. Oh, why He wondered, did it take so long to grow up and take his father’s place.
He looked around the store and put the bowl of the pipe in his hand. He just wanted to get the feel of it —
nothing more. He was lost in his dream, wishing he could be like his father.
Suddenly he was shocked out of his dream. He heard footsteps behind him. He turned around quickly. It was
Mr. Watson, the friendly store owner. Jess was unable to move.
“Hello, Jess,” Mr. Watson said, and kept on walking. Jess struggled to answer but could not get his voice up.
He swallowed and smiled weakly as Mr. Watson walked away. Jess’s thoughts became unclear. Was he suspicious
Suddenly the store seemed extremely warm. Jess watched his feet begin to move and take him out of the store. He felt the cool air outside and it was good, yet, he felt an emptiness inside himself. Like one walking in his sleep, he moved toward the ground. He looked around and saw the empty swings. He slipped into one and leaned against
its chain. The cold metal links hurt his side.
Sitting on the swing, he gave the ground a push with one foot. A sharp pain caught him in the stomach. He
knew it was the pipe he felt. He had walked out of the store with it.

Her big, brown eyes looked up at me with a pitiful sight, as the first tear began to roll slowly down her soft,
six-year-old, innocent face. I was as shocked as she was.
I had been called to my daughter’s new school by the remedial teacher, who called me last night.
Was I aware my daughter had learning difficulties
Yes I was.
Due to constant ear infections, my poor Elizabeth had lost her hearing for the best part of two years of her
young life. In addition, her speech ability had been delayed and her reading skill was behind other children of her
age.
This teacher, this person, who had been specially trained to help children, the very person who was supposed to help my daughter reach her full potential, had called me in to school to tell me, and my daughter, that she would
be lucky if she ever managed to finish high school.
What are you supposed to do when even the remedial teacher doesn’t have any faith in your child’s ability What do you tell your child when she has been told that she is doomed to failure before she has even finished primary school That was the question I was struggling to answer even as I stood there in that room, listening to this insensitive teacher, who did not have a caring character, wishing I had never brought my daughter to this school. I wondered, if this teacher were a mother I truly believe someone cannot have a child and not have a
caring heart.
I took my child’s small hand as we left that cold office, to step outside into the sweet and fresh air. There, I
bent down on one knee and, putting my hands on my daughter’s small but now heavy shoulders, I looked her
straight in the eyes.

Sherry Anne Lipski was born and raised in New York City. Sherry loved the city. It was her home. And most of her closest friends lived just a few blocks away. She could call any of them and, in minutes, they could gather together at the ice cream shop, pizza place, or one of the local playgrounds. When Sherry’s friends got a message
from her to meet at the playground, they knew what she wanted to do: play handball.
American handball is a popular game, most often played in cities, especially New York. It is kind of like tennis except there is no net. Sherry could play handball for hours and hours. With that much practice, she became the best player in her entire neighborhood, winning every time she walked onto a court. Her friends would
challenge her, even though knowing that they would definitely lose, but played anyway just to have some fun.
Toward the end of her fourth grade, her parents told Sherry some very upsetting news.
“Sherry, her mother began, worried that her daughter might cry.” Your father has been given a wonderful new
job by the company he works for.
“Yes, Sherry,” her father added. “I’m very excited about it. It’s a promotion, which means we can have a
much more comfortable life together.”
“OK...” Sherry was unsure why they were speaking to her in such a way when it sounded like good news.
Then it became clear.
“Unfortunately,” her mother said, “we have to move to Pennsylvania where your father has been asked to
work.”
“We know that you’ll miss your New York home, Shey,” said her dad. “But you’re a wonderful young lady.
We know you will make some new friends there.”
Sherry began to cry right away. Her parents comforted her, but she drowned herself in sadness, especially
when she thought of saying goodbye to all of her childhood friends and the neighborhood where she grew up.

Zara replied coldly that she had put away such childish things and warned that
she shouldn’t behave like a cry baby. Soon everyone in the dorm was calling Jenny “Cry Baby”. The idea of
quitting college and running home constantly occurred to Jenny. But somehow, she made it through.
One day, her dad called and asked her to come home for a long weekend. In the end, her father added that she could bring her roommate Zara home and he would soon send two return tickets. Jenny had never told her parents that Zara was far from friendly or supportive. She’d been too ashamed and eager to hide her complete misery(痛苦)
from her family.
That evening, Jenny told Zara about her family’s invitation. Zara stared at Jenny, her mouth open. “A ticket for me Why ” she asked. “I told them you were nice to me…So they wanted to be nice to you...” Jenny explained
awkwardly. After a while, Zara said, “I’m coming!”

的短文。

Eric instantly ran
over to Jerry’s father and whispered something into his ear.
“That would be OK,” said Jerry’s father.

The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a
real live dog and a large family.

参考范文二 (Complex version)
The boy headed back down to the old man's house with the figurine. Afraid as he felt, he still knocked on the door, waiting breathlessly. Finally, it opened and out came the old man. Seeing the boy holding a well-wrapped dog figurine, he looked very astonished but still glared at him without a word. Determined to break the ice, the boy gave
the old man the gift with a card attached, expressing his care. The old man was so moved by all the boy did that
words failed to convey his emotions. “Thank you so much!” he said to the boy gently and kindly. (91words)
From that day on something changed inside the old man. The neighborhood always found the old man hanging out and smiling at everyone. He showed his precious collections to children actively and warmly. He used to collect figurines in memory of a real live dog which had kept company with him for a long time before it died. But now, he
wasn’t drowned in the sorrows and loneliness anymore. He had realized the true spirit of life. (67words)
The boy headed back down to the old man's house with the figurine.
From that day on something changed inside the old man.
But I want to give you a gift.并列连词表示转折; The old man was amazed.句中使用一般过去时态的被动语态; He started coming out of the house and meeting people.句中动名词作宾语; He used to collect figurines in memory of a real
live dog which had kept company with him for a long time before it died.定语从句和时间状语从句用在句中。

Meanwhile, the cat approached us, which kept us busy for along time — watching it, taking turns holding it...

【答案】
“Elizabeth,” I said firmly, “if you work really hard at school, I promise you, you can be anything you want to
be.” She smiled happily and took my hand tightly for the journey to our home. With her and my joint efforts,
Elizabeth finished high school with excellent school performance. In fact she went on to a famous university in our country. The day Elizabeth was presented with her degree, a bachelor in social studies, I emailed the school head of
that primary school.
Of course, I knew that remedial teacher might not be working there anymore. However, I wanted every teacher
in that primary school to be aware of something important. I would like all teachers to know that every child has
potential and that no one should ever tell a child that they are beyond hope. Elizabeth’s story is a perfect
example—every child has potential although some may be performing so-so at a certain moment. I hope there is
not one parent who will listen to anybody who suggests otherwise.

篇完整的短文。
