The parents of a young man with Down Syndrome (唐氏综合征) have made an incredible move to set up his future after he faced constant rejections when looking for work.
After graduation, Anthony, 19-year-old, should have faced multiple career choices about which door to open, but when he actually tried those doors, one after the other, it was locked. Danijela and John Vrkic, from Canberra, were genuinely concerned about their son's future. It was rather difficult for people with a disability, especially those with an intellectual disability, to find any type of work. Inspired by their son, they decided to leave their respective careers behind to build a business.
Mrs. Vrkic got to work armed with her traditional family recipe for "krofhe'', or doughnuts (甜甜圈),which dates back over four generations. She tested the market by sharing her homemade krofne at her previous office with colleagues and friends. Fortunately, it proved to be a hit. After four years in business, there are Krofine Canberra pop-up shops at a number of shopping centres, and an online store is also available.
Today, Krofne is a much loved, disability-inclusive family business and a social enterprise in Canberra. Employment opportunities for people with special needs have been generated. The specially designed KINECT program has highlighted how important it is for people with a disability to feel valued and included in the community. Mrs. Vrkic is an incredibly passionate advocate for inclusivity. She feels if somebody has a disability, it doesn't necessarily mean that they can't work. What she would like to see is for Australia to be inclusive—that every organisation understands and employs the disabled. That is her goal.
On the International Day of People with Disabilities, Mrs. Vrkic was invited to speak at Parliament House. She said, “We're a very small fish in the sea, if our business can do it, why can't other people ”
4. What did the parents do incredibly
A. They made doughnuts to sell.
B. They raised a child with a disability.
C. They quit their jobs to help their son.
D. They weren't discouraged after losing jobs.
5. Why were Mrs. Vrkic's doughnuts popular
A. Because she drew the inspiration from her son.
B. Because she followed the recipe passed down in her family.
C. Because she applied the technique learned from her previous job.
D. Because she got assistance from her previous colleagues and friends.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Mrs. Vrkic
A. Caring and ambitious. B. Elegant and determined.
C. Humorous and brave. D. Passionate and curious.
7. What can be inferred from Mrs. Vrkic's saying
A. Her success can be followed.
B. Her business needs to be expanded.
C. Every business can succeed with united efforts.
D. Every business can offer the disabled assistance.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. A 7. D

Students at an elementary school in California, with the help of their art teacher, created a telephone hotline that people can call to get cheerful advice from kids during difficult times. In just days, the hotline began getting thousands of calls an hour.
Most people agree that with concerns like COVID-19, extreme weather, and the climate crisis, the last couple of years have been stressful.
Jessica Martin, who teaches art at West Side School in Healdsburg, California, thought her students just might have the magic words to bring calm to people in these difficult times. So Ms. Martin, along with artist Asherah Weiss, worked with students on a project they called “PepToc”.
The project had two parts-one was the hotline, and the other was creating encouraging posters. The two adults worked with students from kindergarten to sixth grade. They had the same basic question for all the students, “What could you say to help or encourage someone else “Students working on the hotline thought of what they would like to say. When they were ready, Ms. Martin recorded each one. Later, she sorted out the recordings into the different parts of the telephone hotline.
Pressing 1 brings up ideas for people who are “feeling mad, frustrated or nervous”. Helpful suggestions include “punch your pillow” or “go get a cookie”. Pressing 2 results in “words of encouragement and life advice”. By pressing 3, you can hear a group of kindergartners saying together: “You can do it! Keep trying, don’t give up!” Pressing 4 starts the sounds of children giggling and laughing-a sound certain to bring a smile to anyone’s face.
Ms. Martin thought the project would only attract interest from people near the school. But the hotline was soon getting hundreds of calls a day. Words of the hotline spread quickly on social media. The hotline has become incredibly popular with stressed adults, patients in hospitals, older people in homes, and others who just want to hear the happy voices of children.

In both Africa and Asia elephants are being threatened by changes in their natural habitats. People are moving into the elephants’ habitats and endangering their survival. In the country of Sri Lanka, there is one place where elephants are not only protected but also respected. It is called Elephant Transit Home (ETH).
Set up in 1995, the ETH aims to protect and care for baby elephants that are found injured or living without their mothers in the wild. Every year about 30 baby elephants in Sri Lanka need help. Many are brought to the ETH. There they are given food, shelter, and medical care. Most importantly, they are given the chance to be with other elephants and become part of a herd.
A day at the ETH begins early in the morning when the baby elephants are given their first feeding of milk. During the day, each baby will drink an average of 13 gallons of milk. Older elephants are fed mostly coconut leaves and other native plants. There are no boundaries in the area for the baby elephants as they have the freedom to walk wherever they want. The cost of caring for the baby elephants is high. The ETH spends about $125,000 each year on powdered milk for the baby elephants.
At the ETH, workers try to reduce human connections with the elephants. They also try to increase bonds (联系) between the elephants. It usually takes three years for a baby elephant to be set free into its natural habitat. The elephants are sent back to the wild together with other orphans with whom they have bonded. This program helps them return to the wild as members of a herd that will communicate with each other and take care of each other.
The ETH is considered as one of the best animal protection sites in the world. Not only are the elephants cared for, but they are treated with respect. Most importantly, they go back to live in the wild, where they belong.

第二节 任务型读写(本大题共1小题,共25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整短文。
Whether we notice it or not, our child is a little reflection of ourselves. They grow up looking more and more like us. They even have similar personalities and hobbies. And in some cases, the standard of choosing a good friend.
One day, my 10-year-old Jane said, “Mom, I made a new friend at school today. Can she come over tomorrow ” Her words made me extremely happy because Jane was a shy girl and I wanted her to make some friends to bring her out of her shell.
“Sure, honey, that sounds great.” I said, thinking back to my own childhood best friend, Susan. We lived across the street from each other in Washington Heights, New York. We met at the age of 10, too. Like my daughter. I was shy and had trouble making friends. But Susan drew me out. She was one of the friendliest people in school, with shiny black hair and a mile-wide smile. Thanks to Susan. I was happy every day.
In senior high school, Susan went on a trip to Florida. This was the first time we had to be away from each other for a few days. “I’ll be back soon and I will write to you as soon as I arrive.” she told me. But I didn’t get her phone call nor receive any mail from her. Soon, my family moved to New Jersey, making my hope of seeing Susan impossible.
Whenever I thought of him, tears came into my eyes.
The next day Jane brought her new friend home. “Hi, Mrs. Smith.” the little girl said. Her hair was so shiny and black and she gave me a big smile. “My name is Jo. My mom will pick me up 2 hours later.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph1:
I was puzzled because my daughter’s new friend looked so familiar.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Two hours passed really quickly, and there was a knock on the door.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I was puzzled because my daughter’s new friend looked so familiar. But I was sure that I had never met Jo before. She told me that her family just moved from Los Angeles, which puzzled me even more because I had never been to Los Angeles and we had no relatives living in Los Angeles, either. I convinced myself that it was only my imagination. The two girls got on very well and they giggled from time to time. I watched them play and felt so happy for my daughter from the bottom of my heart.
Two hours passed really quickly, and there was a knock on the door. It was Jo’s mom coming to pick her up later that afternoon. On seeing her face, I was shocked. “Judy!” she cried. “It’s me, Susan!” We embraced each other. It turned out that her father’s company sent his father to Los Angeles before they settled in Florida. She tried calling me later but we had moved. The two little girls were happy to see their mothers became good friends at once before we told them our story, with happy tears rolling down our cheeks.
如:puzzle sb.;convince oneself that;imagination;get on very well;turn out等高级词汇;She told me that her family just moved from Los Angeles, which puzzled me even more because I had never been to Los Angeles and we had no relatives living in Los Angeles, either.运用宾语从句和非限制性定语从句;The two little girls were happy to see their mothers became good friends at once before we told them our story, with happy tears rolling down our cheeks.运用时间状语从句等高级句式。

Students at an elementary school in California with the help of their art teacher, created a telephone hotline that people can call to get cheerful advice from kids during difficult times.

In senior high school Susan went on a trip to Florida.
