New Zealand’s towering mountains, temperate rainforests and remote river valleys all fueled Sir Peter Jackson’s creative spirit when he was crafting (精心制作) the well-known films The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies. Let’s explore New Zealand, the real Middle-earth.
Start in Hobbiton
The journey starts from the exciting urban center of Auckland to Matamata-the home of the Hobbiton Movie Set. Your knowledgeable guide will help you fully understand the history and the on-location filming processes around The Shire.

A lonely elderly man has left people feeling moved after he wrote his neighbour a thank-you letter for changing his life.
The letter reads, “Good aftemoon. This letter is regarding your vocation two weeks ago and how you let me take care of your dogs. I’d just like to give you a letter of thanks. As you know, I’m a lonely old man without a wife or a kid. To add to that, two years ago, my dad died of cancer. After his death, I was left alone in my home. You don’t see me outside often anymore. Every day was spent just sitting around and wondering what I have done for this world until I met Smokey, Oreo and Jennifer. Your pets are the cutest, funniest and most troublesome (in a good way, don’t worry) individuals. They gave me the motivation to restart my life again. I started waking up early in the mornings. I began to take walks outside with your pets for the first time in years. Whenever I felt sad, they would bark or rub against my leg and make me laugh. The highlight of their stay was when I took them to the park. It was the longest time I’ve spent outside in a while. It didn’t just bring back pet interaction; I also met other people, started talking and made some friends. I was so happy to finally be able to interact with others again, and feel like I’m part of the human race. Anyway, thank you so much. You brought back meaning to my life. That’s all that matters.”
Many Reddit users felt emotional reading the letter and shared their responses online. One commented, “We all get busy with our lives and don’t realize the power a small act of kindness can do.”

B. Humans should live in peace with animals.
C. We should interact with others as much as possible.
D. Some small acts of kindness can make a difference.
27. Where can we most probably read the letter
A. In a newspaper. B. In a magazine. C. On a website. D. On a message board.

A woman held her phone tightly to her heart the way a church-goer might hold a Bible. She was anxious to take a picture of an impressive bunch of flowers that sat not so far away, but first she had to get through a crowd of others pushing their way to do the same. The cause of this was Bouquets to Art, one of the most popular events at the de Young Museum in San Francisco.
Flower sellers were asked to create flower arrangements that respond to pieces of art on display, from ancient carvings to contemporary sculptures. It’s extremely attractive and also memorable, to the point that it has become a problem.
In recent years, the de Young received more than a thousand complaints from people who felt that cell phones had spoiled their experience of the exhibit. Institutions of fine art around the world face similar problems as the desire to take photographs becomes a huge attraction for museums, as well as something that upsets some of their patrons (资助人). So the de Young responded with a kind of compromise: carving out “photo free” hours during the exhibition’s six-day run.
One common complaint about the effect of social media on museum culture is that people seem to be missing out on experiences because they are so busy collecting evidence of them. A study recently published in the joumal Psychological Science suggests there is some truth to this. It finds that people who keep taking photos of an exhibit and posting them on social media rather than simply observing it, have a hard time remembering what they see. But the issue is complex for the professionals running museums. Linda Butler, the de Young’s head of marketing and visitor experience, acknowledges that not everyone wants a museum to be “a photo-taking playland”. Yet a lot of people do and she believes that the de Young is in no position to judge one reason for buying a 28 ticket to be more valid than another. “If we removed social media and photography, “she says. “We would risk becoming irrelevant.”
28. What was the woman eager to do according to Paragraph 1
A. To get her phone. B. To escape the crowd. C. To take a photo. D. To push ahead.
29. How did the de Young respond to the dilemma
A. By setting periods without photo-taking. B By making the exhibition free of charge.
C. By compromising with the government. D. By extending the free exhibition hours
30. The recent study finds that the use of social media in museums may
A. uncover the truth B. cause irrelevancy C. bring more pleasure D. play a negative role
31. Which of the following may Linda Butler support
A. Reducing admission prices. B. Catering to visitors.
C. Reserving judgement in public. D. Banning social media and photography.
D
In the days before the Internet, critical thinking was the most important skill of well-educated people. But in the digital age, according to Anastasia Kozyreva, a social scientist at the Max Planck Institute of Human Development, an even more important skill is “critical ignoring”.
As the researchers point out, we live in an attention economy where content producers on the Internet compete for our attention. They attract us with a lot of emotional and eye-catching stories while providing little useful information, so they can expose (暴露) us to money-making advertisements. Therefore, we are no longer customers but products, and each link we click is a sale of our time and attention. To protect ourselves from this, Kozyreva calls for learning the skill of critical ignoring, in which readers control their information environment on purpose to reduce exposure to false and low-quality information.
According to Kozyreva, critical ignoring includes three strategies. The first is to design our environments, which involves getting rid of the low-quality yet hard-to-resist (抵制) information from around. Successful dieters need to keep unhealthy food out of their homes. Similarly, we need to set up a digital environment where attention-grabbing items are kept out of sight. As with dieting, if one tries to depend on willpower not to click eye-catching “news”, he’ll surely fail. So, it’s better to just keep them out of sight in the beginning.
The next is to make a judgement about whether the information is reliable, so that you can be protected from false and misleading information. It can be realized by checking the source in the top news media which is widely considered as being trustworthy.
The last goes by the phrase “do not feed the trolls”. Trolls are actors who spread false and hurtful information online on purpose to cause harm. It may be appealing to respond to them to set the facts straight, but trolls just care about annoying others rather than facts. So, it’s best not to reward their bad behaviour with our attention.
By improving our critical ignoring skills in these ways, we can make the most of the Internet while avoiding being hurt by those who try to control our attention, time, and minds.
32. What is “critical ignoring”
A. The process of spotting and analyzing poor quality data.
B. The skill of not paying attention to online information.
C. The ability to analyze information to come to a conclusion.
D. The art of choosing what information you let into your life.
33. Why does the author mention dieters in paragraph 3
A. To discuss the quality of information. B. To prove the benefits of healthy food.
C. To show the importance of environments. D. To explain the effectiveness of willpower.
34. What should we do to deal with Internet trolls according to the text
A. Expose their intention. B. Turn a deaf ear to them.
C. Correct their behaviour. D. Send hard facts to them.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. Importance of critical ignoring in online search.
B. Ways to practice critical ignoring in the digital age
C. Benefits of critical ignoring in the attention economy.
D. Strategies to improve critical thinking among online users.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to Have an Attractive Personality
Being attractive comes more from your personality than your appearance and demonstrating an attractive personality is key to having lasting relationships. 36 The following tips help foster your ability to fascinate others.
Laugh at yourself. If you make a fool of yourself, laugh at yourself instead of feeling embarrassed. It shows that you’re comfortable in your skin. A sense of humor makes someone more engaging and delightful to be with. 37 It is a great ice-breaker or stress reliever, but don’t ruin a serious conversation with inappropriate jokes.
Speak sincerely. Tell people the truth. If you can’t commit to something, it’s better to be honest about it than to have to tell them last minute that you can’t make it. When people ask for your opinion, you should be honest. 38 For instance, if you don’t like your friend’s shirt, respond with, “I really like you in blue instead, “rather than, “I hate it, it’s ugly.”
● 39 If you see value in making others laugh and keep yourself positive, you’ll be a happier person, making others drawn to you as a result. A great way to remind you to laugh more is to have daily jokes on your phone or email. Set them for a time of day when you notice yourself start to feel drained.
Have confidence in your body. You don’t have to have the “perfect body” to be confident in it. People will be more attracted to you if you dress well and carry yourself well. If you need a little boost, place posters around your mirror that remind you of the charming parts of your body. 40
A. Speak in a positive way.
B. Make laughing a priority.
C. Remember, there is a time and place for humor.
D. There is difference between being frank and rude, though.
E. Focus on these rather than what you’re self-conscious about.
F. Actually, developing engaging personalities is not that far out of reach.
G. But having charming appearance is only skin-deep and far from enough.

A New Addition to the Family
For the initial ten years of his life, Victor was the prince of the household. As he was an only child, his parents petted him and showered all their love and attention on him. Whatever toys his parents bought, they were always meant for him Whatever food was in the refrigerator, there was no one to compete with him to polish it off first. Victor could leave his toys or books around the house with complete ease of mind, knowing that there was no one who would get their hands on his belongings and cause any damage.
However, all that was to change overnight when Victor’s parents brought back his new baby sister, Lina, from the
hospital. With her rosy cheeks, wide open eyes and angelic smile, Lina caught the hearts of her parents, grandparents and relatives. Everyone focused their attention on the cute bunch of joy. Whenever she cried, her mother or father would rush to her bed. She simply cried because she wanted to be carried. There was little time left for Victor.
Now that Victor’s mother had his baby sister to take care of, she expected Victor himself to do most of the chores he can do. Victor was asked to clean his own room, iron his own school uniform and clean his own shoes. Before Lina’s arrival, he had never lifted a finger to help out with these tasks. The whole family also went out less because it was unhealthy to expose Lina to the bacteria () being in the outside world too often.
Victor felt neglected by his parents. He felt that they loved Lina more than him. As a result, he tried to attract his parents’ attention by becoming resistant. One evening, Victor’s parents were called up by his teacher because Victor had got into a fight at school. His teacher had noticed Victor’s behaviour and work attitude changing downwards in the past two months. Before that, he had been a model student.

Earthquake Drill Raises Awareness on Campus
In order to raise awareness and learn skills to survive in an earthquake, a drill was organized in our school last Friday.
The event went smoothly. Instructions and survival skills were delivered before the drill at the class meeting. With the guidance of the teachers, all the students practiced “the Drop, Cover, and Hold On” technique. Bearing the escape routes in mind, students and teachers swiftly reacted to the alarm and evacuated from school buildings in a calm and orderly manner to the designated safe zone, the playground.
After the drill, we all feel more confident in our ability to react swiftly and appropriately in the event of an earthquake. Overall, the earthquake drill is of great significance as it promotes a stronger sense of earthquake awareness, which is crucial for the safety and security of our school community.
第二节(满分25分)
Upon hearing the teacher’s feedback, Victor’s parents got lost in thought. Since their second child Linda was born, they have devoted all their attention to her. To some degree, they neglected victor’s feelings. After all, he wanted to share the love from parents with Linda. So they made a decision that they should treat the two children equally. Gradually, something changed in the family. After school Victor often found some delicious food and new toys on his desk. When he did his homework, his father came to his room and sat beside him, reading a book quietly, which made him comfortable and warm. At that time, his mother was taking care of his sister Linda. After he finished his homework, his mother asked him to play with Linda. Seeing her sweet smile, he felt so happy.
Victor realized that his parents still cared for him. So he was determined to help his parents take good care of his sister. Having finished his homework, he learned to clean their rooms and do all the chores that he could. While his mother was cooking, he played with his sister happily. He came to realize that he should take responsibility for the family because he grew up.

The event went smoothly. Instructions and survival skills were delivered before the drill at the class meeting. With the guidance of the teachers, all the students practiced “the Drop, Cover, and Hold On”technique.
Text 10
W: Today, let’s begin with note-taking techniques. Note-taking is an important skill not only for taking classes, but also for doing your job in the future. I’d like to draw your attention to certain points about taking notes. First, remember that note-taking should be 75%listening and only 25%writing, so don’t try to write down every single word the teacher says. Ignore what is unimportant and write in phrases, not complete sentences. Second, leave spaces and lines between main ideas. You may want to add some information later. I find that some of you are very good at making use of color, mapping web, and symbols such as arrows, circles and boxes. I highly recommend these tools to all of you, because the use of them makes the outline more easily readable and interesting than the blocks of text. It also makes sure that important words stand out, here are some examples.
