(1) encourage 作及物动词,意为“鼓励;激励”。encourage sb. to do sth意为“鼓励
某人做某事”。
(2) punish作及物动词,意为“惩罚”。punish sb. 意为“惩罚某人”。
encourage 和punish都可以在词尾加后缀 ment变成名词,encouragement (鼓励)和
punishment (惩罚)。
e.g. Her words were a great encouragement to them.
她的话对他们是极大的鼓舞。
He was asked to clean the house as a punishment.
他被要求打扫房子来作为惩罚。
