Hyperbole and a Half, by Allie Brosh

On any given day, you can find most 10-year-old boys throwing a ball around outside, riding bikes or playing video games. But Braden Baker is different.
Braden is a hearing damaged 5th-grader and has to wear hearing aids(助听器). Unluckily, Braden's dog Chewy found his hearing aids on the floor and destroyed them-not once but twice and they had to be replaced. But at $3,500to $6,000 a pair, Braden's carelessness was costly.
Braden's mother Ashley sat Braden down and had a long talk about taking better care of his hearing aids, explaining how much they cost."I told him that he was lucky to get another pair and that some people couldn't afford a new pair, "Ashley said.
Those words stuck in Braden's mind, who realized not every child who needed hearing aids could afford them. Recently the 10-year-old boy decided to start a GoFundMe page to raise money for those who aren't so lucky.
Braden made a video to explain why he wanted to raise money. Ashley said, "We weren't sure how it would turn out. He began with a goal of$1,000.We woke up the next morning and found it had raised$400."
This encouraged him to start making more videos. Fast-forward a few months and Braden's GoFundMe page has raised over $15,000, which Braden donated to the Oticon Hearing Foundation. That money will be used to help other families buy hearing aids for their children.
The project has not only taught Braden the value of money, but according to his mom, "he's learned that if you put a small idea into action, amazing things can happen."
Braden's advice to those looking for ways to give back to others is "Don't give up! Any small idea can get really big."

Set 40 kilometers northeast of the city of Ambatondrazaka, the Zahamena National Park's landscape consists of (……组成) valleys surrounded by a flowing mountain range.
It has an overall land coverage of 64, 300 hectares, but only 42, 000 hectares is open to the public due to strict conservation (环境保护) reasons. It receives an average yearly rainfall level of about 6 feet and experiences frequent rain showers even during the dry season between April and October.
One really interesting thing about the Zahamena National Park is that the unique territory of its highland has paved the way for the development of several ecosystems that exist at the same time in this park. This is the reason why the types of wildlife living in one area are different in another, which makes it quite exciting to explore.
This protected area is divided into two parts, with a separate piece of land in the middle where many small villages are situated. These villages are inhabited (居住) by the members of the Sihanaka and Betsimisaraka ethnic groups.
The Zahamena National Park gets its name from the local Zahana Mena tree, an uncommon type of hardwood that grows in the lower regions of this protected area. It is characterized by its resilient (坚韧的) wood that can be rather challenging to cut, join, shape and carve even with modern tools.
Established as a strict natural highland reserve in 1927 (and one of the first of its kind in all of Madagascar), the Zahamena National Park was officially given its national park status (地位) in 1997 and was eventually opened to the public. Due to its remarkable territory and unique biodiversity, this national park was later listed as a key part of the collective UNESCO World Heritage Site called the Rainforests of the Atsinanana in 2007.

Electronic timing is older than most people imagine and was used for the first time more than a hundred years ago at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics. Initially, the well-known company Ericsson was tasked with developing the technology, but it was the Swedish inventor Ragnar Carlstedt who eventually created the final product.
At the same time, Carlstedt introduced another invention: the finish line camera. The 1, 500-meter Olympic final was extremely close with Arnold Jackson from Great Britain winning by only 0.1 seconds. But it was impossible to decide on the silver medal since the two Americans Abel Kiviat and Norman Taber finished side by side. For the first time in history, the outcome of an Olympic event had to be settled based on a photo finish when Kiviat was judged to be “slightly ahead”.
The significance of these two inventions led a major newspaper to write: “Electronic timing at the Olympic Games. Simultaneous (同时发生的) timing and photography of contestants. A brilliant idea!”
The next step in timekeeping was the photo-finish camera with a time stamp imprinted on each picture which was introduced at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles. The 1948 Olympics saw the introduction of another invention with the continuous slit camera (狭缝摄影机), where a film behind a narrow slit rolls (滚动) with the same speed as the runners. Four years later the clocks were connected to the slit camera giving a solution of 1/100 s. But it was not until 1972 that official times were recorded to the 100th of a second.
The next big step in the eighties was to make the camera digital to speed up the feedback (反馈). But the idea behind the slit camera was kept and is still the basis of all timing systems for athletics used today. The only difference is that now there is a very narrow sensor array ( 阵列传感器) instead of the moving film.
After a century technology has reached the point where the whole timing system can be stored in a smartphone. So in a way, the circle was closed when SprintTimer, a sports timer and photo finish app, was developed in the same place and precisely a hundred years after Ragnar Carlstedt.
32. What do we know about electronic timing
A. It was created in recent years.
B. It was first introduced at the Olympics.
C. It was developed by the well-known company Ericsson.
D. It was perfected by the Swedish inventor Ragnar Carlstedt.
33. What does paragraph 2 focus on
A. The increasing need for a finish line camera.
B. The excellent performance of Arnold Jackson.
C. The significant role of Carlstedt's another invention.
D. The intense competition of the 1,500-meter Olympic final.
34. How was the digital camera in the eighties different from the slit camera
A. It avoided the use of a moving film.
B. It rolled with the same speed as the runners.
C. It made a 100th-of-a-second record possible.
D. It adopted a new idea for all timing systems used today.
35. What does the underlined part “the circle was closed” in the last paragraph mean
A. Further improvement was discontinued.
B. The problem was back to the origin.
C. A new invention was created.
D. The issue was resolved.

“What’s that squeaky noise ” Meg asked her eight-year-old daughter, Haley. She looked down at the girl’s shoes and noticed her sneakers’soles had been torn open. Meg and Haley were on their way home from school, and it had just stopped raining. Water on the road had leaked into Haley's damaged shoes, making a squishy noise.
Meg immediately took her daughter to a shoe store to buy her a new pair of sneakers. She had some money for groceries but thought getting Haley a new pair of shoes was more important. “How about these " asked Haley, who was checking shoes in the section only for boys. “Mama, I want these limited-edition sneakers. Buddy loves a TV show and always tells me how he wishes to wear such shoes.”
Meg frowned. Not only did she not have money to afford two pairs of shoes, but she wondered why Haley was too interested in getting her classmate Buddy a new pair. Sensing her mother’s hesitation, Haley continued, “Buddy is from a very poor family, mama. Poorer than us. His shoes are torn and look miserable. Everybody laughs at him. Please, can we buy these shoes for him You can buy mine later.”
Meg thought for a while and decided it would be best if she bought her daughter shoes for now. “You will fall sick if you keep wearing your wet, torn shoes. I'm sorry, honey, but you need a new pair.” Haley sighed heavily and agreed. She was not excited to see the new pair of sneakers her mom had bought forher.
As Meg and Haley left, Bob, the shoe store owner who knew Meg well, walked to the entrance and sighed. He had overheard everything and knew what it was like to live in poverty. He wanted to help Haley fulfill her mission of helping Buddy but didn't know how. Moreover, the pair of shoes Haley wanted to get for Buddy was a limited-edition collection, which had been ordered by someone else. He could not simply give them away.

An ideal relationship between parents and children is very important for our growth. Parents always show love and concern for us. They are our good listeners, advisers and supporters. With their help, we can overcome many difficulties in our life.
In my opinion, the relationship between parents and children should be one filled with love, care and understanding, in which parents and children show respect for each other and exchange ideas freely.
To build a relationship of this kind, parents should become friends of their children while children ought to place more trust in their parents and give voice to their feelings frankly. Only in this way, can we enjoy a harmonious relationship between parents and children
