Dear Editor,
After reading some opinions on whether studying abroad is good idea or not, I’m interested in it. From my perspective, I subscribe to the idea that studying abroad is good.
To begin with, studying abroad can broaden our horizons and enhance multiple abilities, such as mastering a language and communicating with people. The valuable experience can help us reach greater heights in our lives. Also, it has a positive influence on promoting cross-cultural cooperation and mutual understanding. We have a chance to act as ambassadors of friendship between different cultures and peoples. Finally, studying abroad enables our rapidly developing country to have a group of pioneers with global vision that are greatly needed in a variety of fields.
To sum up, studying abroad has a bright and promising future to look upon, and I am for the idea of studying abroad.
Yours,
LiHua
I was about to run away when my teacher came up to me. He joked I fell due to my eagerness to bow to the audience. His humor helped remove the embarrassment. Then he motivated the audience to give me encouragement. Feeling less nervous, I took the microphone and cleared my voice before reading the title. Surprisingly, my voice sounded clear and loud. The hall silenced. I continued reading, with words coming out in the right order and lines flowing together appropriately.
When I finished my reading, the hall was silent at first. I swallowed hard. Maybe no one loved my poem. Then out of the silence there was clapping and cheering. I dared to look for my parents in the sea of faces, and found my mother wiping away tears and my father smiling. With a light-headed feeling and a happy smile, I bowed slightly and walked off the stage. I greeted each person I met when going back to my seat, with relief and gratefulness spreading warmly through my body.
A篇
根据Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge部分中的“... operates as part of the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway.” 故选A。
根据Hartland Covered Bridge部分中的“Although it was originally built without a roof, the bridge was capped with wooden materials during the repairs in 1921.”
根据Jiaozhou Bay Bridge部分中的“... with the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge receiving the title of “longest bridge over water”.”
根据第一段中的“The circus, by its nature, is one that has a loose structure. So the early years after my leaving the circus to sit in a classroom all day felt more like a prison.”
根据第二段中的“I took the skills I had learned from being onstage and applied them to broadcasting ... I found I really enjoyed the work ... The flexibility and adaptability I’d learned in the circus as a child helped me do my job naturally and easily in a stressful situation”可知,因为有儿时在马戏团获得的灵活性和适应能力,作者做起这份工作来是得心应手、如鱼得水的。故选D。
第二段提到作者小时候在马戏团获得的技能让他成年后做工作时如鱼得水,再根据倒数第二段中的“it became clear to me that performing was what I truly wanted. For me, the circus symbolizes who I am.”和最后一段中的“And most importantly, for me, it means coming home.”
故选A。
根据第一段中的“The British wear these yellow flowers to show they support ... Marie Curie.” 故选A。
根据第三段中的“She experimented with newly-discovered elements to create the theory of radioactivity (放射性).”和“Because of her pioneering work, the charity decided on the name of Marie Curie.”
根据第二段中关于Marie Curie这一慈善机构的介绍和第四段中的“The daffodil ... marks the return of flowering plants to the ecosystem after winter. Because of this, the charity uses the daffodil as a symbol, hoping cancer patients could recover from sickness.” 故选A。
通读最后一段内容,尤其是“The charity encourages people to start wearing their daffodils at the start of March”和“People are sometimes seen walking around with daffodils on their clothes all year round.”
根据第一段中的“They create a widespread background noise ... which helps them communicate, protect their homes and hunt for food.”
根据第三段的“Mooney discovered a strong relationship between warmer waters ... tanks in the lab and by listening to the shrimp in the ocean at various water temperatures.”

W: Hi, everyone! Welcome to Mount Raven, the most popular ski place in the state.
I’m Jessie Williams, and this is our weekend weather report. This morning we’re seeing sun with cloudy periods as well as a few hours of light snowfall. Right now I am at the top of Mount Raven where the temperature is plus two and expected to rise to about six degrees by noon. Overnight temperature will probably drop to at least minus seven. Tomorrow’s forecast. With the wind chill factor, that could put us at a record low of minus twenty. Conditions are perfect for skiing this weekend, but if you’re determined to head out to the slopes tomorrow, please remember to put on warm clothes to protect yourself from the cold, especially exposed areas like your ears, cheeks and hands. Now, we have to go back to the newsroom for a look at what’s happening in sports. Have a splendid weekend!

Over the last century, engineers all over the world have spared no effort to achieve the unachievable in bridge design.
Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge
No bridge is as long as the Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge in the world. The 164.8-kilometre-long bridge built in 2011 in China operates as part of the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway. The trip from Ningbo to Jiaxing that previously took 4.5 hours has been reduced to two, thanks to this bridge.
Rio-Niterói Bridge
Completed in 1974, the Rio-Niterói Bridge in Brazil is the second-longest bridge in all of Latin America connecting the cities of Rio and Niterói across the Guanabara Bay. The Rio-Niterói Bridge is technically known as a “box-girder (箱形梁)” bridge, made of special concrete. It receives an astonishing 140,000 (or more) vehicles per day.
Hartland Covered Bridge
The Hartland Covered Bridge is the world’s longest covered bridge. The 1,282-foot-long bridge was opened in 1901 and has been on Canada’s list of National Historic Sites since 1980. Although it was originally built without a roof, the bridge was capped with wooden materials during the repairs in 1921.
Jiaozhou Bay Bridge
The newly-built Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in China was named “world’s longest bridge over water” by Guinness Book of World Records in 2011, a title previously held by the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. The dispute was settled when the title of “longest continuous bridge over water” was given to the causeway, with the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge receiving the title of “longest bridge over water”.

A. Danyang-Kunshan Grand Bridge.
B. Rio-Niterói Bridge.
C. Hartland Covered Bridge.
D. Jiaozhou Bay Bridge.
22. What is special about the Hartland Covered Bridge
A. It is a busy bridge.
B. It was built in 1980.
C. It has a roof.
D. It is a wooden bridge.
23. Where can you find the longest bridge over water
A. In America. B. In Brazil.
C. In Canada. D. In China.

I was 6 years old when my father told me we were leaving the Big Apple Circus (马戏团). Until that point, I had spent most of my life on the circus lot, playing with the other circus kids. The circus, by its nature, is one that has a loose structure. So the early years after my leaving the circus to sit in a classroom all day felt more like a prison.
But years later, I found areas that interested me. I took the skills I had learned from being onstage and applied them to broadcasting. And so when Boston’s news station WBUR offered me a job out of college, I jumped at the chance. Along the way, I found I really enjoyed the work. I became WBUR’s news reporter. The flexibility and adaptability I’d learned in the circus as a child helped me do my job naturally and easily in a stressful situation — whether it was a destructive tornado outside Boston, or the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013.
But then a serious infectious disease appeared. Suddenly, for the first time in my adult life, I went for a year without doing any shows. But it became clear to me that performing was what I truly wanted. For me, the circus symbolizes who I am. And stages have always been where I’ve felt the most free. Some people get nervous before they go onstage, but by assuming (扮演) the character of Jacques ze Whipper and drawing a stupid moustache on my face, all my social anxiety disappears.
Circus performances go beyond age, socioeconomic status (地位), and even language. It’s the type of performance where you can go anywhere in the world to entertain anyone — help anyone forget their troubles for 5, 10, and even 30 minutes. And most importantly, for me, it means coming home.
24. How did the author feel in the early years of school
A. Curious. B. Unfree.
C. Loose. D. Impatient.
25. What do we know about the author’s job at WBUR
A. He did it for his father.
B. He did it against his will.
C. He risked his neck doing it.
D. He took to it like a duck to water.
26. What does the circus probably mean to the author
A. A means of living.
B. A chance to go anywhere.
C. A part of his identity.
D. A way to forget his troubles.
27. Why does the author write the text
A. To express his love for circus performances.
B. To stress the value of performing.
C. To share his personal experiences in a circus.
D. To discuss the problem of choosing a job.
C
As you walk around the UK in March, you might notice that some people are wearing a daffodil (水仙花) on their coats. The British wear these yellow flowers to show they support one of this country’s best-known charities: Marie Curie.
Marie Curie tries to ensure everyone who has cancer is cared for in the best possible way. It also helps fund research into possible cures. Founded in 1948, it has been continuing with its goal ever since.
The charity was named after Marie Curie, a famous scientist. She experimented with newly-discovered elements to create the theory of radioactivity (放射性). Unfortunately, over-exposure to the radioactive elements made her develop a disease and die in 1934. Marie Curie won the Nobel Prize in two different fields. Because of her pioneering work, the charity decided on the name of Marie Curie.
The daffodil is one of the first plants to flower during spring in the UK, which marks the return of flowering plants to the ecosystem after winter. Because of this, the charity uses the daffodil as a symbol, hoping cancer patients could recover from sickness.
Everyone you see wearing a daffodil has contributed to the charity, but each daffodil is worth only what you want to pay for it. The charity does ask that you stick to a minimum amount of 1.
The charity encourages people to start wearing their daffodils at the start of March, when the “Great Daffodil Appeal” kicks off. But that doesn’t mean you can only wear them in March. People are sometimes seen walking around with daffodils on their clothes all year round.
28. Why do some British people wear a daffodil
A. To advocate a charity.
B. To celebrate patients’ recovery.
C. To remember a scientist.
D. To offer hope to cancer patients.
29. What makes the charity use the name of Marie Curie
A. Marie Curie’s support for the charity.
B. Marie Curie’s achievement in cancer treatment.
C. Marie Curie’s study on radioactivity.
D. Marie Curie’s concern over cancer patients.
30. What does the daffodil imply according to the charity
A. Bringing life to other people.
B. Returning of flowering plants.
C. Contributing money to the charity.
D. Encouraging patients to cheer up.
31. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. A change in a British custom.
B. The effect of a campaign.
C. A special activity held in March.
D. The time to wear daffodils.
D
One of the ocean’s noisiest creatures is smaller than you’d expect — snapping shrimp (鼓虾). They create a widespread background noise in the underwater environment, which helps them communicate, protect their homes and hunt for food. When enough shrimp snap (发出噼啪声) at once, the noise can be deafening.
Aran Mooney, a biologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, suggested that with increased ocean temperatures, snapping shrimp will snap more often and louder than before. This could raise the background noise of the global ocean. “They make a sound by closing a claw so fast. This makes a bubble (泡泡) and when that bubble bursts, it makes that snapping sound,” said Mooney.
Mooney discovered a strong relationship between warmer waters and more frequent snapping shrimp sounds after experimenting with the shrimp in tanks in the lab and by listening to the shrimp in the ocean at various water temperatures. “As the temperature rises, the snap rate increases,” he said. This makes sense because shrimp are essentially cold-blooded animals, meaning their body temperature and activity levels are largely controlled by their living environment. “We can actually show in the field that not only do snap rates increase, but the sound levels increase as well.”
How the louder snapping shrimp would affect or benefit the surroundings remained to be seen. “We know that fish use sound to communicate,” Mooney said. “If the environment gets noisy, it has the possibility to influence that communication. That’s something we have to follow up on.” There is also the possibility that the change of snapping shrimp affects machines humans use to discover mines, which could lead to unpleasant results.
32. What can we know about the snapping shrimp’s sound
A. It aims to protect the shrimp.
B. It is important to the ecosystem.
C. It has different uses for the shrimp.
D. It is hard to be discovered by other creatures.
33. How does Mooney do the experiment
A. By observing snapping shrimp in the field.
B. By recording the snap rates in the lab.
C. By analyzing the way shrimp make noise.
D. By comparing shrimp’s sound in different places.
34. What might Mooney research next
A. Other uses of shrimp’s sound.
B. Influences of the noise on other creatures.
C. Means of communication among fish.
D. Methods of stopping shrimp’s snapping.
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Underwater World Is No Longer Quiet
B. Small Animals Make a Big Difference
C. Warming Oceans Are Getting Louder
D. Snapping Shrimp’s Noise Speaks Much
What to Do When You Fail in Life
Most people are afraid of failure. The truth is that everyone, including all successful people, has ever failed time after time and will fail again. 36
Learn from it
No matter how hard you try to avoid (避免,逃避) it, failure will happen. Having a “no fear” attitude towards failure does not mean you should expect to fail, but accept it when it happens.
37 Failure makes us rethink, reconsider, and find new ways and strategies to achieve our goals. Through failure, we will get to know ourselves better.
Stop fearing it
38 You are supposed to push yourself to go to the limits. When you have a no-fear attitude and accept failure willingly, your determination can be made the best use of.
Let go of your self-worth
When your self-worth is in charge, you will not learn from the mistakes you have made, be open to other people’s views or see the situations clearly. 39 We need to learn, evaluate, and listen to other people if we want to see what needs to change in order to succeed.
Improve your mood (情绪) and cheer up again
We all feel upset after having failed, which is natural, human, and unavoidable. But how we respond to our failures is what decides our road to success. One way of improving your mood is listing the things you are grateful for at the moment, which will strengthen your positive emotions.
40
A. There is value in failure.
B. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.
C. The ordinary people experience failure, too.
D. It always tends to get in the way of you and your success.

When Thanksgiving Day was approaching, my primary school decided to celebrate it by presenting shows like dancing and singing that all students could join in. Parents would also be invited to watch.
One afternoon, the schoolmaster called me into his office. He said with a smile, “Nancie, could you write a poem for the festival and read it during the coming event ” “Sure!” Excitedly, I had loved poetry since my fifth grade. I was fascinated by poems for it is an amazing thing to convey feelings through them. When my first poem was published, I was known to my friends and teachers as the class poet.
I left the schoolmaster’s office that afternoon, feeling quite happy. Then for weeks, I worked or my poem, carefully designing the content, structure and sound. I practiced reciting it aloud every day.
When the evening for the event finally came, I was ready. Well, I was ready until I looked around and realized how many people there were in the school hall. How could I present my poem in front of more than 400 people I was just a seventh-grader! No one would take my work seriously What was worse, I had never spoken in front of a huge crowd before. I sat in my chair, hoping I could disappear. Maybe they would forget I was supposed to read.
“Hey, Nancie, I saw your name in the program. Good luck!” my little brother's voice rose as he took his seat a few rows down with his class. I nodded, struggling to keep calm. I knew my parents were somewhere in the hall. Before long, the lights faded, the crowd quieted, and the schoolmaster took the stage to introduce the list of the shows. Mine was at the end of the list. So I had to sit through an hour of absolute anxiety.
It wasn’t until the students from the fourth grade were singing that my teacher brought me downstairs next to the stage. My mind was blank. Then suddenly, I was on stage with the bright white lights blinding my view of the audience. When I walked to the microphone in the center of the stage, I somehow tripped over something. And I stupidly fell down. All of the kids burst into laughter.
