Employers today tend to hire students who truly made the most of their time on campus. Joining in
an extracurricular club could be one of your highlights.
Media & Publication Club
It focuses on publishing a campus newspaper, creating a website, or writing ads. The skill sets
required to successfully create media today are varied. You may love the written word or love graphic
design. Whatever the case, you are likely to find your place within the club.
Academic Club
This club is among the most popular on campus, which can be a great benefit to a degree-seeker,
because they allow you to connect with other students in the same major and often even to network with
professionals from industries in which you plan to seek employment after graduation.
Community Service Club
If you are eager to make a difference to the world, the club focusing on serving others might be the
perfect match for you. This club is intended for children, seniors, underserved populations, animals, the
environment, and on and on. If you have a desire to help, the opportunity to serve likely exists on your
campus.
Sports & Recreation Club
If you are interested in the sport you’re pursuing, it does not matter if you aren’t playing at the
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) level. Club sports are usually not controlled by the rules
of the NCAA, but you have chances to travel to other colleges in order to compete. The level of

A painter has just completed his course. He took 3 days and painted beautiful scenery. He wanted to
know people’s opinion about his talent and painting skills.
He put his creation at a busy street and just down below a board which read, “I have painted this piece.
Since I’m new to this profession, I might have made some mistakes. Please put a cross wherever you see a
mistake. ”
While he came back in the evening to collect his painting he was completely shattered to see that
whole canvass (画板) was filled with crosses, they criticized (批评) the painter seriously.
Completely heartbroken, he ran to his master’s and burst into tears.
This young artist complained, “I’m useless and if this is what I have learnt to paint I’m not worth
becoming a painter. People have rejected me completely.”
Master smiled and suggested, “My son, I will prove that you are a great artist and have learnt perfect
painting. Do as I say without questioning it. It will work.”
Young artist agreed and two days later early morning he presented a replica (复制品) of his earlier
painting to his master. Master took that gently and smiled.
“Come with me.” master said.
They reached the same street early morning and displayed the same painting exactly at the same place.
Now master took out another board which read, “Gentlemen, I have painted this piece. Since I’m new to
this profession, I might have made some mistakes in details. I have put a box with colors and brushes just
below. Please do a favor. If you see a mistake, kindly pick up the brush and correct it.”
Then they walked back home.
They both visited the place the same evening. The young painter was surprised to see that actually
there was not a single correction done so far. Next day again they visited and found painting remained
untouched. They say the painting was kept there for a month for no correction came in!

Scientists have long said getting a good night’s sleep is important to your health. Now, an American
team of scientists reports that too much sleep might be connected with cognitive decline (认知衰退 ).
Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine did the sleep study. Their findings were
published in the September issue of Brain.
The study examined 100 adults who had been under medical observation for cognitive ability for 3
years. The average age of the study subjects was 65. Every year, they were asked to complete several tests
for signs of cognitive decline—the higher the score, the less cognitive decline. They also wore special
devices (设备) to measure their brain activity during sleep.
The study found that eighty-eight of the group were identified as free of cognitive damage, eleven
subjects as very little damaged, and one as a little damaged. And those whose cognitive scores declined
slept less than 4.5 hours or more than 6.5 hours per night. But the scores stayed the same for those in the
middle of the range (区间). Dr. Brendan Lucey, leading author of the research, said, “Our study suggests
that there is a middle range for total sleep time for best cognitive ability. Shorter and longer sleep times
were connected with worse cognitive result.”
Greg Elder, a sleep researcher at Northumbria University, expressed his ideas about the findings.
He wrote in The Conversation, “This is low when we consider that older adults are advised to get
between seven and eight hours of sleep every night.” He also noted that the research should have taken
other information about the subjects studied, including their general health or economic conditions, into
consideration.
But Dr. Lucey agreed that each person’s sleep needs are unique. Babies, young children, and teens
need even more sleep for their growth and development. And people over 65 should also get more sleep
per night. “It suggests that sleep quality may be key, not simply total sleep.” Lucey added.
28. Which side of the study does paragraph 2 mainly focus on
A. Its process. B. Its background. C. Its result. D. Its preparations.
29. Which is the best for total sleep time according to the study
A. 4 hours. B. 6 hours. C. 7 hours. D. 9 hours.
30. What can be inferred from Greg Elder’s words
A. The findings need to be perfected.
B. Older adults need less sleep every night.
C. The more you sleep, the better your health is.
D. The findings agree with former expectations.
31. Which of the followings may Dr. Lucey agree with
A. One’s sleep styles cannot be changed.
B. The amount of sleep increases with age.
C. Sleep needs differ from person to person.

Thanks to the hard work of companies like California-based Orbital Assembly Corporation (OAC),
space tourism is well on its way to coming true. Now, the company is working to offer a chance for space
visitors to “get out of the world” by checking into the first true hotel in low Earth orbit (轨道).
The 650-foot-wide Ferris-wheel-like Voyager Space Station (VSS) will be made up of two rings
connected together. The inside circle will be fitted with spacecraft stations for guests while the outside ring
will house the rooms, restaurants, bars, gyms, and scientific research labs. The hotel powered by the sun
will travel at high speeds to create artificial gravity (人造重力 ), providing tourists a comfortable stay.
When completed, it will have rooms for up to 400 people.
While the idea is attractive, making VSS a reality will take time and money. The team is now building
a smaller prototype (雏形 ) ring. Once finished, OAC engineers will attempt to create artificial gravity.
Transporting the VSS to space will cost thousands of millions of dollars. However, OAC believes that they
will recoup the money by asking $5 million per person for each 3-day stay. Though the cost may seem too
high, it is cheap compared to the $55 million it costs to stay on the ISS (International Space Station).
Besides, guests at the Voyager Station will be living in the greatest conditions.
“You’re going to have the top cooks making really good food,” Orbital CEO John Blincow told
the Washington Post. “There’ll be two shows every night as well.” Visitors will also be able to take part in
the activities that are not possible on Earth such as spacewalks which allows visitors to admire views of
Earth and space.
If everything goes according to plan, the company plans to start work in 2026 and welcome the first
visitors in 2027. “If you are eager to be among the first, you can pay an amount of money to save your
place ahead of time,” added John Blincow.
32. What do we know about the VSS
A. It is made up of two squares.
B. It is powered by electricity.
C. It travels fast to escape Earth gravity.
D. It provides earth-like living conditions.
33. What does the underlined word “recoup” in paragraph 3probably mean
A. Save. B. Waste. C. Spend. D. Recover.
34. Why are John Blincow’s words mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To praise the hard work of OAC.
B. To show the high-end service of the VSS.
C. To present what life will be like in the future.
D. To stress the importance of exploring space.
35. What is the main idea of the text
A. It takes lots of time and money to travel to space.
B. Traveling to space has long been a human’s dream.
C. The world’s first space hotel hopes to welcome visitors.
D. Space tourism has been warmly welcomed since its beginning.

Saving the Galaxy
I pressed my face to the school-bus window as we passed the big movie screen. Galaxy Drive-In (银
河汽车影院) one sign said. CLOSED said another.
I got off the bus at my stop and waved to Mom. I asked her about that drive-in down the street as we
walked into the house. Mom told me that it had closed a couple years before.
But that night, I heard music coming through my window. When I looked out, I could see lights
flashing on the drive-in’s screen. The thought of fear crossed my mind.
The next day, after breakfast we walked over to check things out. The place was like a big parking lot
with weeds coming out through cracks. We were looking at an old movie poster when an old man got out
of a car.
He introduced himself as Nick. “When my dad opened this place in 1957, we’d get 300 cars on a
good night, but now I have to close it because I can’t afford a digital projector (放映机), which is very
expensive.” Nick explained that all movie companies just provide digital movies instead of film (胶片 )
movies. Then Nick allowed us to look around and invited us to come by before dusk.
That night, Nick made an old movie come to life. As I sat next to Mom, I kept thinking about the
excitement of seeing that big screen light up. Nick had looked so happy talking about the old days. If only
he could get that projector.
