When I first came to Armenia (亚美尼亚) and started to learn the Armenian language, I was overwhelmed by the difficult task ahead. I decided I was going to try and only learn the basics for survival, because, after all, who speaks Armenian
I spent the first few months just trying to keep up with my classmates, but always with the idea in the back of my head that I really didn’t need to try that hard, because Armenian was not a language which would serve me in the future. I even had Armenians telling me that I had better invest my time learning Russian which could someday come in handy.
Despite everything, I invested a lot of time learning the Armenian language, in part because only one other person in the community I live in speaks English. I eventually started to notice people’s appreciation of me having gone to the trouble of learning their language. I have been thanked for speaking Armenian, which is something that has really amazed me.
But when Armenians started to notice how much importance and time I was giving to their language, we automatically (自动地) started bridging the gap between our differences, and they became interested in me as an individual and in where I came from. I think language is such an important part of culture. Speaking Armenian has served me as a bridge to the people of this country, and by immersing (使专心于) myself in it as I have done, I can better and more fairly represent the culture of Armenians to the people of the United States.
Living in Armenia has taught me the importance that language has, not just in the culture, but also the identity of a people. I don’t think I could have been able to immerse myself in the culture and get the deep cultural experience I am getting right now if I had dismissed Armenian as an expensive luxury I couldn’t afford due to the practicalities of time and utility.
14. Why didn’t the author pay more attention to learning Armenian at first
A. He didn’t think it useful in the future.
B. It was too difficult to learn.
C. He would leave the place soon.
D. He preferred to learn Russian.
15. What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph
A. Language is the spiritual pillar of Armenians.
B. Language is the carrier of cultural exchange.
C. Communication is the main part of daily life.
D. Communication is the beginning of friendship.
16. What is the text mainly about
A. Culture is very significant for a nation.
B. Language is important for studying abroad.
C. Life in Armenia is wonderful.
D. Language is a wonderful bridge.

Breadfruit is a traditional staple(主食) crop from the Pacific islands with the potential to improve worldwide food security. While people have survived on it for thousands of years, there was a lack of basic scientific knowledge of the health impacts of a breadfruit-based diet in both humans and animals. Now the fruit is getting the nutritional thumbs-up from a team of British Columbia researchers.
Breadfruit can be harvested, dried and made into a flour. For the project, researchers had four breadfruits from the same tree in Hawaii, shipped to the Murch Lab at UBC Okanagan. Ying Liu led the study examining the digestion and health impact of a breadfruit- based diet.
“We wanted to contribute to the development of breadfruit as a sustainable, environmentally- friendly and high production crop,” Liu says. The researchers designed a series of studies that could provide data on the impacts of a breadfruit-based diet fed to mice and also an enzyme (酶) digestion model.
The researchers determined that breadfruit protein was found to be easier to digest than wheat protein in the enzyme digestion model. And mice fed the breadfruit diet had a significantly higher growth rate and body weight than standard diet-fed mice. Liu also noted mice on the breadfruit diet had a significantly higher daily water consumption compared to mice on the wheat diet.
Fundamental understanding of the health impact of breadfruit digestion and diets is necessary and essential to the establishment of breadfruit as a staple in the future. “Overall, these studies support the use of breadfruit as part of a healthy, nutritional balanced diet,” says Liu. The use of breadfruit could make inroads in food sustainability for many populations globally. Liu suggests if a person ate the same amount of cooked breadfruit they can meet up to nearly 57 percent of their daily fibre requirement, more than 34 percent of their protein requirement and at the same time consume vitamin C, iron, calcium and other elements.
17. What does the underlined word “thumbs-up” mean in the first paragraph
A. Requirement. B. Benefit. C. Reflection. D. Acceptance.
18. What is the purpose of Liu’s study on breadfruit
A. To help those Pacific islands.
B. To prove the value of the food.
C. To promote the food worldwide.
D. To develop a new type of diet.
19. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The research method.
B. The research focuses.
C. The research process.
D. The research findings.
20. What can be inferred about breadfruit from the last paragraph
A. It will take the place of wheat.

第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。其中有两项为多余选项。
We don’t always eat just to satisfy physical hunger. 21 And when we do, we tend to reach for junk food, sweets, and other comforting but unhealthy foods. You might reach for a pot of ice cream or order a pizza if you’re bored or lonely.
Occasionally using food as a reward or to celebrate isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But when eating is your primary way of dealing with emotional problems, you can get stuck in an unhealthy emotional eating cycle.
Emotional eating is using food to make yourself feel better-- to fill emotional needs, rather than your stomach. Actually, emotional eating doesn’t fix emotional problems. 22 Afterward, not only does the original emotional issue remain, but you also feel guilty for overeating.
23 Eating may feel good in the moment. The feelings that led to the eating are still there. And you often feel worse than before because of the unnecessary calories. No matter how powerless you feel over food, it is possible to make a positive change. You can learn healthier ways to deal with your emotions. 24
The first step is finding out what leads you to emotional eating. What situations, places, or feelings make you reach for the comfort of food Most emotional eating is linked to unpleasant feelings, but it can also be caused by positive emotions, such as rewarding yourself for achieving a goal. Whatever the reason, you have to find other ways to fulfill yourself emotionally. 25 If you’re exhausted, treat yourself with a hot cup of tea, take a bath, or wrap yourself in a warm blanket. Things like these may help a lot.
A. Make time for relaxation.
B. It may even make you feel worse.
C. Many of us also turn to food for comfort.
D. Emotional hunger can’t be filled with food.
E. Finally, you can put a stop to emotional eating.

G. If you’re anxious, expend your nervous energy by dancing to your favorite song.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为 150左右。
Usually, it’s my dad who sings silly songs or tells corny(老套的) jokes around my friends. But a few weeks ago, it was my mom who played the embarrassing parent role.
While my mom and I were shopping, we ran into my teacher, who mentioned that school didn’t have a music teacher to help our class put together a performance for Winter Fair. And, right then and there, my mom said, “I know the perfect song and dance. I’ll teach it to the kids!”
Before I could say “Please don’t.”, my mom had agreed to come to my class every morning at 9:30 for a week. Oh, and just to be clear she was not a professional entertainer. My parents ran a small grocery store(杂货店), and the only singing my mom did was in the shower.
“Um,” I said on our way home, “are you sure this is such a good idea ” “Of course!” she said. “If we want your school’s Winter Fair to happen, people need to step up and volunteer.” “I know volunteering is important,” I said, “but couldn't you help out in Tex and Indi’s kindergarten instead ” She laughed. “Don’t be silly. We’ll have great fun!”
“OK, class,” my teacher said at 9:28 on Monday. “We’re going to stop silent reading a little early because a special guest is here to help us with a performance for Winter Fair. Let’s all welcome Arizona’s mother.”
1 looked up to discover my mom standing at the front of the room wearing a strange snowflake hat. “I’m very excited to be here with you guys!” my mom said. “I’m going to teach you a fun little song- and-dance I learnt a few years back, when I did some theater in college. Here it goes!”
Oh, please, oh, please, I said over and over in my head, let there be a fire drill (消防演习), or a morning meeting, or a power failure, or anything to stop my mom from completely embarrassing herself and me !
But apparently, my mom was not at all concerned about looking silly. She turned on some background music and started singing and dancing away.

38. A。根据后面一句的内容Anything they can’t swallow, they spit out.可以看出鲸鱼有很大的嘴巴,但是喉咙很小。故选A。
39. D。根据句意可知,整个经历仅持续了十秒,但对“我”而言却很漫长。故选D。

第二节 应用文写作(满分15分)
The Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Education
With the development of technology and the Internet, online education, as a useful supplement to the traditional education, is gaining more and more popularity.
Online education undoubtedly has its advantages. Firstly, it is not limited by time and place, which enables students to have access to their study materials whenever and wherever they like. Moreover, the videos can be played over and over again, providing different learners with more flexible learning methods. However, online education also has some disadvantages. The increase in screen time will cause vision loss, which is harmful to their health. What’s worse, online education will reduce the interaction and communication between students and teachers.
As far as I am concerned, everything has two sides. Only when traditional and online education are combined effectively can more fruitful education be realised.
