Jordan Mittler has been spending weekends teaching seniors in New York how to use technology for years but he never expected he would be streaming(直播) a class about smartphones and computers on smartphones and computers.
The Manhattan resident has patiently taught texting, emailing and video chatting to dozens of seniors for years, beginning when his grandparents first got smartphones. Teaching them how to use apps and send messages inspired the tech-savvy(懂科技知识的) teen to offer his services to more older people. At age of 12, he created a formal course and started hosting free, hour-long sessions for seniors every Sunday. Immediately, he was flooded with interested participants. His course, spread out over 10 weeks, was an instant success.
But when the coronavirus hit New York City, Jordan had to end his classes. He wasn’t sure if he could move the lessons on line— it was much easier to help students understand their devices in person—but he knew the importance of keeping older folks connected online. Most of the attendees were retired or lived alone and needed to find ways to connect with family members remotely. “It gives them somewhere to be and something to do,” he said.
So he spent a week ensuring each student could use Zoom, an online video chat platform. For most of the seniors, that meant calling them individually with step-to-step instructions. Since then, online classes have been going smoothly.
His project, Mittler Senior Technology, has taught Jordan the value of making inter-generational relationships. He frequently invites his teenage friends to participate in his classes, hoping more young people will take time to help older relatives or neighbors.
“Any kid in our generation can show their grandparents how to send an email,”he said. “It’s very important to spend as much time with them as you can.”For family members trying to help older relatives surf the Internet, Jordan has some advice. He suggests starting with basic applications, like email or texting. From there, it’s easier to learn how to navigate more complex apps and websites. “Patience is really key,”he said.
4. What inspired Jordan Mittler to teach seniors how to use technology
A. His interest in technology.
B. His ambition to become famous.
C. His determination to fight against coronavirus.
D. His experience of teaching his grandparents.
5. Which of the following can best describe Jordan Mittler

October 15th is Global Handwashing Day. Activities are planned in more than twenty countries to get millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap.
Experts say people around the world wash their hands but very few use soap at so-called critical moments. These include after using the toilet, after cleaning a baby and before touching food.
Global Handwashing Day is the idea of the Public-Private Partnership for hand washing with soap. The goal, they say, is to create a culture of hand washing with soap. The organizers say all soap is equally effective at removing disease-causing germs (细菌). They say the correct way to wash is to wet your hands with a small amount of water and cover them with soap. Rub it into all areas, including under the fingernails. Then, wash well under running water. Finally, dry your hands with a clean cloth.
The Partnership says soap is important because it increases the time that people spend washing. Soap also helps to break up the dirt that holds most of the germs. And it usually leaves a pleasant smell, which increases the chances that people will wash again.
It also says that washing hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet could save more lives than any medicine. It could help reduce cases of diarrhea (痢疾), which is the second leading cause of child deaths, killing more than one and a half million children a year, by almost half.
8. What does the author intend to tell us in the passage
A. To keep healthy by washing hands.

e. Wetting hands.
A. a-c-b-e-d B. e-d-a-b-c
C. a-c-b-d-e D. e-b-d-a-c
10. Which fact can’t explain why soap is important
A. It gives people a longer hand washing time.
B. It helps to remove a lot of germs from hands.
C. It attracts people to do more hand washing.
D. It gets all people into the habit of washing hands.
11. According to the last paragraph, diarrhea is a disease that .
A. kills half of the kids in the developing countries a year
B. causes the greatest number of child deaths
C. can be prevented to some degree by washing hands with soap
D. can’t be cured without washing hands

由第一段“October 15th is Global Handwashing Day. Activities are planned in more than twenty countries to get millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap. (10月15日是全球洗手日。计划在20多个国家开展活动,让发展中国家的数百万人用肥皂洗手)”,第三段中的“Global Handwashing Day is the idea of the Public-Private Partnership for hand washing with soap. The goal, they say, is to create a culture of hand washing with soap. (全球洗手日是公私合作组织用肥皂洗手的理念。他们说,目标是创造一种用肥皂洗手的文化)”和文章其他段落可知,文章介绍了国际洗手日以及这个节日践行用肥皂洗手的理念和其作用,可得出文章的目的就是让人们用肥皂洗手。故选B项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。由第三段中的“They say the correct way to wash is to wet your hands with a small amount of water and cover them with soap. Rub it into all areas, including under the fingernails. Then, wash well under running water. Finally, dry your hands with a clean cloth. (他们说正确的洗手方法是用少量的水弄湿你的手,然后用肥皂盖住。把它擦到所有部位,包括指甲下面。然后,用自来水冲洗干净。最后,用干净的布擦干你的手)”可知,正确的洗手方式:e(弄湿双手)-b(用肥皂盖住手)-d(用肥皂搓手)-a(好好洗手)-c(干燥双手)。故选D项。

And it usually leaves a pleasant smell, which increases the chances that people will wash again.
由最后一段“It also says that washing hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet could save more lives than any medicine. It could help reduce cases of diarrhea (痢疾), which is the second leading cause of child deaths, killing more than one and a half million children a year, by almost half. (它还说,饭前和如厕后用肥皂洗手比任何药物都能挽救更多的生命。它可以帮助将腹泻病例减少近一半,腹泻是导致儿童死亡的第二大原因,每年导致150多万儿童死亡)”可知,饭前便后用肥皂洗手能拯救更多的生命,会减少一半的患痢疾,故可推知痢疾是一种可以通过用肥皂洗手预防的疾病。故选C项。

Wall-E, a popular robot from a Pixar film, has been brought to life by scientists in the form of a seed-planting robot. The A’ seedbot could wander around a desert to look for fertile(肥沃) lands. After finding one, it would send a report to researchers about its discovery. The autonomous robot could then change a once-abandoned area into a workable landscape ideal for farming.
Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation graduate Mazyar Etehadi created this robot farmer. It was a part of his graduation project with the Global Grad Show. This event presents solutions that tackle modern issues connected to the environment and society.
Etehadi said that he wished to see more plants and more greenery out there. The fresh graduate added that continuous desertification led him to develop a seed-planting robot. Later, he arrived at an innovative solution that would require less human participation.
According to a recent report, the farmer robot carries solar panels that can be charged even at night or day. In addition, the length of A’ seedbot is estimated to be 20cm long, and it could move within a 5km radius(半径). Etehadi said that it has 3D-printed legs that can travel in sandy areas to seek appropriate moisture(水分) levels. This would be a hint(迹象) for the robot to plant a seed.
Moreover, a distance sensor helps the machine relay reports to its user. The receiver on the other side can use data sent for further research. Additionally, it has a built-in collision(碰撞) avoidance system to help the robot for easy soil detection. “I think it was an easy solution to come up with, but no one had actually thought of it,” Etehadi said. He added that farmers, citizens, farming industries, and the government will benefit from the seed-planting robots.
Regarding these environment-friendly robots, Tadeu Caravieri of Global Grad Show said such creations would continue to appear in future programs. He believes that these robots will have a “big impact”. As another report says, because of those innovative robot designs, the year of AI has clearly arrived in today’s world.
12. Why does the author mention robot Wall-E in paragraph 1
A. To highlight the importance of looking for environment protection.
B. To arouse the interest of the readers.
C. To prove the possibility of finding all fertile lands.
D. To show the popularity of the film.
13. What does the underlined word “tackle” mean in paragraph 2
A. handle. B. prevent. C. strengthen. D. protect.
14. What do we know about the A’ seedbot
A. It is developed by farmers.
B. It solves all the problems existing before.
C. It relies on frequent human participation.
D. It is partly 3D-printed.
15. What can be inferred from the passage about the future of the A’ seedbot
A. Promising. B. Concerning.
C. Unclear. D. Costly.
B 13. A 14. D 15. A

How to Communicate With a Deaf Person
Communicating with a deaf person doesn’t have to be as difficult as it might seem. The trick is to be patient, straightforward, and to remember that deaf people communicate visually.
Method1:Starting Your Conversation
___16___ You can do this by moving into the person’s field of vision and waving from a polite distance, or by tapping the person gently on the shoulder.
Position yourself carefully. Make sure that the light in the room is shining directly onto your face and that you’re not standing with your back to a light.___17___
Find out how the person prefers to communicate. Some deaf people are better lip-readers than others. Some deaf people may prefer to write back and forth or to use an interpreter. Man interactions between the deaf and the hearing require a combination of these methods.___18___
Method2:Communicating Through Lip-reading.
Keep your sentences simple and use plain language.___19___ The more complex your phrasing and vocabulary, the more likely your deaf companion is to miss something.
When someone else is speaking, don’t turn away from the deaf person in your group.___20___ You don’t have to look at the deaf person while someone else is talking, but try to make sure your face is visible.
A. Get the person’s attention.
B. It’s important not to talk too quickly.
C. Or, they’ll miss parts of the conversation.
D. If so, it’ll make them feel left out of the conversation.
E. Stand directly in front of the person,at a normal distance.
F. The best way to know which methods are most effective is to ask.
G. Try not to be too difficult when using your words in the beginning.
A 17. E 18. F 19. G 20. D
该段下文“You can do this by moving into the person’s field of vision and waving from a polite distance, or by tapping the person gently on the shoulder.”(你可以走到对方的视野范围内,保持礼貌的距离向对方挥手,或者轻轻地拍对方的肩膀)可知要引起那个人的注意。 故选A项。
根据本段主题句“Position yourself carefully.”(小心地摆好姿势)与该空前句“Make sure that the light in the room is shining directly onto your face, and that you’re not standing with your back to a light.”(确保房间里的光线直接照在你的脸上,而不是背对着灯光站着)可知,此处是保持一定距离,直接站在那个人的前方,所以E项Stand directly in front of the person, at a normal distance.(站在对方的正前方,保持正常距离)符合题意,上下文紧密连接,和该段主旨内容一致,同时也是对上文内容的语意递进。故选E项。
根据上文“Some deaf people may prefer to write back and forth or to use an interpreter. Man interactions between the deaf and the hearing require a combination of these methods.”(一些聋人可能更喜欢来回书写或使用翻译。 The best way to know which methods are most effective is to ask.(要知道哪种方法最有效,最好的方法就是去问)符合题意,承接上文。故选F项。
根据上文“Keep your sentences simple and use plain language.”(保持句子简单,使用平实的语言)以及下文“The more complex your phrasing and vocabulary, the more likely your deaf companion is to miss something.”(你的措辞和词汇越复杂,你的失聪同伴就越有可能错过一些东西)可知,上下文都是讲的开始说话时,用的词尽量不要太难,由此可推断出,空格处内容与此相关,选项G项Try not to be too difficult when using your words in the beginning.(在开始使用单词时,尽量不要太难)符合此推断,起到上下文的承上启下作用,上下文语意连贯。故选G项。
根据上文“When someone else is speaking, don’t turn away from the deaf person in your group.”(当其他人在讲话时,不要转过脸去看你们组里的聋哑人)推知,空处陈述如果这样做,他们的感受,所以选项D项If so, it’ll make them feel left out of the conversation.(如果是这样,他们会觉得自己被排除在谈话之外)符合题意,上下文语意连贯。

He found that Charlie was a quiet boy, so he started making trouble for his new classmate. But Charlie still kept quiet and did not complain to the class teacher. When Charlie’s parents learned about Bill, they wanted to go to school and complain about this naughty boy’s behavior. But Charlie stopped them and said, “Mom, Dad, please do not worry. Everything will be all right.”
Days went by and the time came for the annual sports meeting at the school. Charlie was also good at sports and he was participating in a number of events. Bill was participating in the sack race (套袋跑), though he could not run very fast due to his fat body. When Bill saw that Charlie won first prize in the 100-meter race, he felt very jealous (妒忌的) and decided that he would not let it happen in the sack race.

So he spent a week ensuring each student could use Zoom an online video chat platform.
