“Where I grew up, there were not a lot of plants outside,” said Yolanda Palmer. “Some people had them; some people didn’t.”
Palmer, who is from Southwest Philadelphia, discovered her love for plants at the age of 10. Growing up, she developed great skills in growing plants and learned more about nature each and every day.
“As I got a little older, one block in my neighborhood would be filled with flowers and things in the yard,” she said. “But in another block there would be none.”
Since then, Palmer had wanted to share her love of plants with the community. But the dream remained just a seed (种子) while she worked an ordinary day job. Sitting in the company she often thought she had to do something else. Palmer then planted the seed. She started small, selling at a local outdoor market in Southwest Philadelphia and then coming to shows and festivals in Chestnut Hill.
By December 2021, she had her store on German town Avenue, “Foliage”. There, she sells common plants, rare (罕见的) plants, small plants, and large plants. “The goal is to sell them to homeowners to beautify their home and also to clean the air,” she said.
Palmer’s home is in Chestnut Hill, a central gardening center in the city. She hopes her message will be able to reach other communities in the Philadelphia area. “Everyone should buy houseplants. Everyone should want cleaner air,” she said. “And that way, in the future when our children grow up, we can make it better.”
Palmer plans on continuing to work hard to support not only her store, but her boys, four dogs, one cat and 128 plants at home.
4. What did Palmer find when she was young
A. Her neighbors disliked plants.
B. People knew little about plants.
C. There were few kinds of plants.
D. Plants were not seen everywhere.
5. What is Palmer doing now
A. Managing a gardening center. B. Running her own plant store.
C. Beautifying her block with plants. D. Teaching communities about plants.
6. What does Palmer hope
A. Everyone can protect the plants.
B. More locals will have houseplants.
C. Children can learn more about plants.
D. She will have an outdoor market for plants.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. From hobby to job: Palmer has made it
B. From class to work: Palmer’s happy habit
C. From village to city: Palmer is on the road
D. From seed to flower: Palmer’s future dream

In the past five years, a revolution (革命) has gathered pace in the transport sector. Electric cars have hit the mainstream.
The latest figures released on 26 April by the International Energy Agency (IEA) suggest almost one-in-five new cars sold worldwide this year will be either a full-battery or plug-in hybrid (插电式混合动力) models. In total, 14 million of these kinds of vehicles are expected to be sold this year, up from around a million in 2017.
This explosive growth is a testament to industry innovation and government interventions (干预). Falling battery costs have delivered longer-range cars, boosting their consumer appeal. Meanwhile, government policies, including upcoming restrictions on the sale of new petrol and diesel (柴油) cars in some countries, have caused people to choose zero-emission driving.
But although electrification of the global vehicle fleet brings climate benefits, there is also cause for concern. SUVs have been growing in popularity in recent years, accounting for 42% of all car sales in 2020. At the same time, electric SUVs have also gained ground, representing roughly 35% of electric passenger car sales in 2022.
Electric SUVs are still greener than their petrol and diesel counterparts, but their size and weight erase some of the climate gains from moving to electric vehicles. Their larger batteries also require more raw minerals, putting extra pressure on already stretched global supplies. “The trend towards larger cars is definitely not desirable at all,” says Christian Brand from the University of Oxford.
Air pollution is another worry. “The benefit of moving to an electric vehicle, from an exhaust (废气) emission point of view is pretty small,” says Frank Kelly from Imperial College London. And since electric vehicles still produce pollution from their tyres, brakes and road wear, air pollution won’t fully go away. “We’re still going to have a pretty big problem in our cities,” says Kelly.
As such, governments must do more to reduce car dependency, particularly in urban areas, says Kelly. “Clean public transport is the solution to our air pollution problem in urban areas.” he says.
8. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. How the car industry transformed.
B. Why people turn to electric vehicles.
C. A prediction of the car industry’s future.
D. A comparison between electric vehicles and traditional ones.
9. Which of the following can best replace the underlined part “gained ground” in paragraph 4
A. Met with opposition. B. Control the market.
C. Made significant progress. D. Gone into gradual decline (下降).
10. What does Kelly suggest people do
A. Use public transport. B. Share cars with others.
C. Stop using petrol vehicles. D. Choose smaller electric vehicles.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Electric vehicles are rapidly taking off — but is that a good thing
B. The future of electric vehicles and material resources
C. How green are electric vehicles Well, that depends.
D. Did SUVs just win the electric vehicle market

Since NASA’s Voyager I Spacecraft became the first humanmade object to cross into interstellar (星际的) space, scientists have studied decades of its data sent back to Earth from billions of miles away gaining insight into the mysteries of our universe. Now, a physicist and a flutist (长笛手) have transformed such waveform data of interstellar space into music fit more for a classical concert. The new piece of music was first played on 9 March, 2023.
The musical work charts (记录,跟踪) how Voyager I left the bubble around our sun and entered busy interstellar space. The melody (曲调), played by a solo flute, begins with smooth, connected notes at a lower register (声区) to illustrate the data from inside our solar system. A gradual increase in loudness follows to indicate the spacecraft crossing the heliopause, or the boundary that leads into interstellar space. Then the melody becomes very high and changes shape, with more jumps to describe the busy interstellar space environment.
“Understanding that is connected to what Voyager I was measuring, I think, adds another dimension (方面,维度) to what people are perceiving (理解).” said Domenico Vicinanza, a music composer and physicist, who created the piece. “It is different because the physics is different…something very, very dramatic changed.”
Alyssa Schwartz an award-winning concert flutist, performed the piece from Voyager I data together with Vicinanza. But, sometimes, turning data into sound can lead to unreasonable musical tasks for a human to perform. For instance, the Voyager I piece has 37 measures (小节), and there is no place to rest or breathe until Measure 32. “I have learned that nature doesn’t care about my need to breathe,” joked Schwartz.
Schwartz said the music has pushed her technical development with complex cross fingerings and broad, difficult jump—patterns she hasn’t encountered anywhere else. “What’s interesting in this kind of music is that the composer that I’ m trying to relate is nature” Schwartz said. “I can’t rely on my knowledge of music theory or music history to try to inform the decision.”
12. What makes the creation of the new piece of music possible
A. Musical instruments taken aboard the space shuttle.
B. A physicist’s great curiosity about the flute.
C. A flutist’s proper understanding of physics.
D. Data collected by a NASA spacecraft.
13 What does the new piece of music describe
A. Voyager I journey into deep space.
B. The changes in the shape of the solar system.
C. A bubble’s gradual formation around the sun.
D. The sound of busy interstellar space environment.
14. What does the author want to show by mentioning “Measure 32”
A. The musical work’s overall structure. B. The performance’s challenging nature.
C. Alyssa Schwartz’s remarkable musical skills. D. Domenico Vicnanza’s unreasonable demand.
15. What does Alysse Schwartz think of the new music piece
A. It has some room to improve. B. It has educational significance.
C. It is hard for her to understand. D. It is a brand-new experience for her.

11 What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Electric vehicles are rapidly taking off — but is that a good thing

Alyssa Schwartz, an award-winning concert flutist, performed the piece from Voyager I data together with Vicinanza.
13. What does the new piece of music describe
A. Voyager I journey into deep space.
B The changes in the shape of the solar system.
